Dual Z-scheme TCN/ZnS/ ZnIn2S4 with efficient separation for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Ting Sun,Ping Gao,Yuqing He,Zhiren Wu,Jun Liu,Xinshan Rong

The development of an efficient catalyst that can use solar energy for NH 3 production is of great significance in solving the environmental and energy crisis caused by the traditional ammonia synthesis process. In this work, a dual Z-scheme tubular carbon nitride/zinc sulfide/zinc indium sulfide ternary composited photocatalyst (TCN/ZnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 ) with excellent nitrogen photofixation performance under visible light was prepared by self-assembly and hydrothermal methods . The crystal structure studies confirmed that tubular carbon nitride (TCN) had more active sites that could promote N 2 adsorption. The photochemical studies proved that the double charge transfer channel provided by the dual Z-scheme heterojunction could improve the efficiency of electron-hole separation and achieve excellent photocatalytic nitrogen fixation . The ammonia production rate of the TCN/ZnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 catalyst was up to 136.56 μmol/L, and it also has good stability and reusability. This work provides new insight into the development of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts with green and efficient nitrogen fixation.

Electron-rich biochar enhanced Z-scheme heterojunctioned bismuth tungstate/bismuth oxyiodide removing tetracycline

Fuyan Kang,Xiaona Jiang,Yao Wang,Juanna Ren,Ben Bin Xu,Guoyang Gao,Zhanhua Huang,Zhanhu Guo

Photocatalytic treatment of antibiotics in aqueous ecosystems has become a promising method. However, the low efficiency photogenerated charge separation and slow kinetics of the catalyst severely limit its deployment for industrial applications. Here, the three-dimensional bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6)/bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) loaded on biochar (BC/BWI) composite catalyst was designed for the efficient removal of tetracycline (adsorption capacity: 227.09 mg g−1, removal rate: 99.8%). Via construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions at the interface of Bi2WO6 and BiOI, the built-in electric field promotes the directional separation of photogenerated carriers to achieve efficient separation and utilization of photogenerated charges. Meanwhile, the introduction of electron-rich biochar (BC) effectively enhances the adsorption performance, photogenerated electron migration capacity and mass transfer process of the material. The introduction of BC and the building of Z-scheme heterojunctions effectively achieve the spatially synergistic separation of photogenerated charges. The ˙O2− dominates the photocatalytic process, according to the mechanistic studies. The degradation intermediate product testing revealed that tetracycline is efficiently degraded through two main pathways. This work provides ideas for the design of catalysts for the efficient removal of antibiotics from water bodies.

Xiaojing Yu,Haoran Qiu,Zhe Wang,Bin Wang,Qingnan Meng,Shaodong Sun,Yufei Tang,Kang Zhao

Aiming at comparing the charge separation efficiencies of various heterojunctions, such as p-n junction, metal–semiconductor junction, Z-scheme junction, TiO 2 -Au, TiO 2 -BiOI, TiO 2 -BiOI-Au and TiO 2 -Au-BiOI were synthesized by using n-type TiO 2 , p-type BiOI and plasmon metal Au as components for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. The as-prepared “Z-scheme” TiO 2 -Au-BiOI photocatalyst showed the highest photocatalytic performance for N 2 photofixation with 543.53 μmol L −1 h −1 g −1 in the pure water system, which is 1.68 times higher than that of TiO 2 -BiOI-Au nanocomposite, 1.85 times higher than that of TiO 2 -BiOI and 6.69 times higher than that of TiO 2 -Au, revealing superiority of the heterojunctions of TiO 2 -Au-BiOI in kinetics among these different heterostructured photocatalysts during the photocatalytic N 2 reduction process. Moreover, the as-prepared TiO 2 -Au-BiOI exhibited considerable performance under real natural environment, showing a promising potential in future application.

Zhongtian Fan,Wengui Duan,Guishan Lin,Ming Chen,Mei Huang

In search of novel natural product-based bioactive molecules, twenty (ten pairs) novel ( Z )-/( E )-anisaldehyde-based oxime ester compounds were designed and synthesized by using anisaldehyde as starting material. Structural characterization of the target compounds was carried out by NMR, FT-IR, ESI-MS, and elemental analysis. Their herbicidal and antifungal activities were preliminarily tested. As a result, at 50 μg/mL, compound ( E )- 5b exhibited excellent to good inhibition rates of 92.3 %, 79.2 %, and 73.9 %, against Rhizoctonia solani , Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum , and Bipolaris maydis , respectively, better than or comparable to that of the positive control chlorothalonil. In addition, at 100 μg/mL, compounds ( E )- 5b , ( E )- 5f , ( Z )- 5f and ( E )- 5d exhibited excellent to good inhibition rates of 85.8 %, 82.9 %, 78.6 % and 64.2 %, respectively, against the root-growth of rape ( B. campestris ), much better than that of the positive control flumioxazin. The bioassay result also showed that the synthesized compounds had obvious differences in antifungal and herbicidal activities between ( Z )- and ( E )-isomers. Preliminary structure–activity relationship was also discussed by theoretical calculation. Graphical

Constructing Z-Scheme Bi2O3/In2O3 Heterojunction for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B

Hongjun Chen,Zi Wang,Zeyang Xue,Chunhu Yu,Lizhai Pei,Chuangang Fan

A Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction is successfully fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method using sodium bismuthate and indium nitrate as the source materials. The crystal structure, composition, micromorphology, and optical property of the Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and solid ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectra. The Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction exhibits a remarkable photocatalytic degradation capacity for Rhodamine B, which is better than that of pure Bi 2 O 3 and In 2 O 3 . The photogenerated charges separation and transfer process of the Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction follows a direct Z-scheme mechanism under UV–vis light irradiation. The trapping experiment indicates that oxidative radicals including •OH, h + , and •O 2 − play crucial roles in the photodegradation process. The outstanding photodegradation capacity is ascribed to spatially separated charge carriers, fast-charge transportation characteristic, and special bandgap structure of the Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction. The introduction of H + and OH − ions into the reaction system promotes the formation of •OH and •O 2 − radicals, significantly enhancing the photodegradation rate of RhB. This study presents a new insight into the construction of the Z-scheme Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction photocatalyst with potential application in wastewater treatment.

A novel Z-scheme CdS/Bi4O5Br2 heterostructure with mechanism analysis: Enhanced photocatalytic performance

Wang Cao,Caiyun Jiang,Chen Chen,HaiFei Zhou,Yuping Wang

The novel Z-scheme CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterostructure was successfully synthesized by a simple mixed-solvent thermal method. It proved that the Z-scheme CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction was constructed by XRD , SEM, TEM and XPS. The synthesis of CdS nanospheres on ultra-thin Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 nanosheets to form a heterojunction interface was beneficial to the dispersion and transfer of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs, which was demonstrated by PL , i-t and EIS. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra attested CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction enhanced utilization of visible light. The Z-scheme 0.5-CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance for degradation process of CIP and TC than that of pure CdS and Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 . In addition, recycling tests declared that the Z-scheme 0.5-CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction compared with single CdS had higher stability and durability, attributing to effectively alleviating photocorrosion of CdS. It could be seen from the trapping agent experiment that superoxide free radicals and hydroxyl free radicals were the main active substances. The possible photocatalytic mechanism of the Z-scheme 0.5-CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction under visible light irradiation was proposed.

A Z-scheme ZnFe2O4/RGO/In2O3 hierarchical photocatalyst for efficient CO2 reduction enhancement

Jiadong Li,Feng Wei,Changchang Dong,Wei Mu,Xiaojun Han

Indium oxide (In2O3)-based photocatalysts have great potential in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Nevertheless, their photocatalytic activity is inhibited by rapid electron–hole recombination. Hence, a novel Z-scheme ternary hierarchical ZnFe2O4/RGO/In2O3 photocatalyst is fabricated for photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CO and CH4. The CO production rate reaches up to 35.4 μmol g−1 under 4 h of illumination using a 20ZFO/10RGO/IO catalyst, which is 3.9 times and 9.8 times higher than those using bare In2O3 and bare ZnFe2O4, respectively. The CH4 production rate is 7.8 μmol g−1, which is 4.3 fold and 2.4 fold higher, respectively, compared to those from bare In2O3 and bare ZnFe2O4. The enhancement of photocatalytic CO2 reduction was ascribed to a Z-scheme mechanism of the hierarchical catalysts by introducing RGO in-between In2O3 and ZnFe2O4 to promote charge separation and realize efficient utilization of the high-energy electrons and holes. The oxygen-defect of ZnFe2O4 also facilitates the adsorption and activation of CO2. This work provides new insights to design ternary In2O3-based hierarchical photocatalysts with a rational Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism to improve the CO2 conversion efficiency.

Direct Z-scheme Ag3PO4/Bi4Ti3O12 heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic performance for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Chenlu Liu,Jingjing Xu,Junfeng Niu,Mindong Chen,Yonghui Zhou

This paper introduces a Z-scheme Ag 3 PO 4 /Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 heterojunction composite photocatalyst prepared by an in-situ growth method. The photocatalytic properties of the prepared samples under visible light irradiation were studied by degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results of photocatalytic experiments and cycle experiments showed that Ag 3 PO 4 /Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 -20% composite exhibited much better photocatalytic activity and stability than pure Ag 3 PO 4 and pure Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 . The capture experiment results showed that h + is the main active substance in the process of SMX degradation. In addition, we proposed a possible photocatalytic mechanism based on the results of experiment and characterization. The formation of a direct Z-Scheme photocatalytic system promoted the separation of carriers, thereby improving the stability and activity of the composite samples.

A Z-scheme TiO2 quantum dots fragment-Bi12TiO20 composites for enhancing photocatalytic activity

Tao Wang,Xiqing Liu,Qiuyue Men,Changchang Ma,Yang Liu,Pengwei Huo,Yongsheng Yan

To completely utilize the high redox ability of photo-induced charge carriers. Here, a Z-scheme photocatalyst of TiO 2 QDs/Bi 12 TiO 20 (TBT) composites with TiO 2 QDs fragment attached to the surface of Bi 12 TiO 20 (BTO) was prepared and the photocatalytic activity was evaluated by degradation of gatifloxacin (GF). The optimal photocatalytic performance of TBT displayed 3 times higher than bare BTO. The improved photocatalytic performance was ascribed to the effective separation of the charge carriers between TiO 2 QDs and BTO via the direct Z-scheme heterojunction . Such a strategy for the construction of Z-scheme TBT composites for removal of organic pollutants, proving new insights into design photocatalyst.

Z-scheme carbon-bridged Bi2O3/TiO2 nanotube arrays to boost photoelectrochemical detection performance

Yajun Pang,Yuwei Li,Guangqing Xu,Yating Hu,Zongkui Kou,Qiang Feng,Jun Lv,Yong Zhang,John Wang,Yucheng Wu

An effective photoelectrochemical sensor is urgently needed for monitoring of the environmental pollution caused by organic wastes. In this work, we report a facile in-situ illumination-assisted process to introduce uniform metal oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) nanocrystals of 2–3 nm in sizes on carbon bridged TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TiO 2 NTAs) (Bi 2 O 3 /C@TiO 2 NTAs), in which the carbon functions as both electron trapping for high efficiency and system integration. The Bi 2 O 3 /C@TiO 2 NTAs thus made exhibit a highly selective photoelectrochemical determination performance, with low background photocurrent (derived from the decomposition of water) and high detection current (derived from the decomposition of organics target). In particular, the current detection of the Bi 2 O 3 /C@TiO 2 NTAs is 3.38 times higher than that of the pristine TiO 2 NTAs. To understand the key working principles involved, they are scrutinized by probing into the photoelectrochemical reaction process, including the light absorption, charge separation and transfer, and surface reactions. With the novel Z-scheme heterostructure system being achieved with Bi 2 O 3 /C@TiO 2 NTAs, the present work demonstrates the potential of metal oxides with uniform size in nanometer range and conductor-bridged strategy in creating Z-scheme heterostructure system with high photoelectrochemical detection performance for organics.

Preparation of direct Z-scheme Bi2Sn2O7/g-C3N4 composite with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Xiaojuan Zhao,Jiajie Yu,Hongda Cui,Tianhe Wang

In this study, for the first time, BSO/g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalysts were synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction method. The influence of systematically varied g-C 3 N 4 contents on the photocatalytic activity was investigated in detail. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts was evaluated through the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and acid red 18 (AR 18) as target pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrated the photocatalytic performance of the BSO/g-C 3 N 4 composites was greatly enhanced compared to pure photocatalyst. In addition, the optimized photocatalytic efficiency for MB and AR 18 was achieved when the mass percentage of g-C 3 N 4 in the composite was 60%. And based on our analysis, it is proposed that the BSO/g-C 3 N 4 has the characteristic of direct Z-scheme type photocatalyst. The excellent photocatalytic performance was interpreted in terms of enhanced visible light absorption and efficient separation of electrons and holes. Compared with hydrothermal method, this method only involves sintering in air at a moderately elevated temperature, so it is efficient and more preferred for industrial scale production.

Delafossite-embedded Z-scheme heterojunction photocathode with abundant heterointerfaces for boosted photoelectrochemical performance

Wen-Rong Fu,Shui-Miao Yu,Xianglin Xiang,Jian Yang,Zong-Yan Zhao

Layered delafossite, an inherently p-type semiconductor, has emerged as a highly promising photocathode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, its PEC performance and scalability are significantly limited by the shortcomings of conventional photoelectrode fabrication techniques, which often involve inferior physical adhesion or require harsh processing conditions. In this study, a Cu x O layer is introduced via in-situ oxidation of a copper foam (CF) substrate to achieve embedded anchoring of delafossite CuFeO 2 (CFO), thereby developing a robust embedded CF/(CFO@Cu x O) photocathode. This configuration features extensive and strong 3D semiconductor/semiconductor heterointerfaces. The embedded structure significantly reduces the carrier diffusion length to the CF, thereby enhancing photocarrier collection efficiency. Additionally, this unique geometric design provides abundant heterointerfaces with all-round contact, promoting efficient carrier separation while strengthening interfacial binding. Theoretical calculations further reveal the formation of a strong built-in electric field and a Z-scheme heterostructure, which facilitate effective photocarrier separation and transfer while maintaining robust redox activity. Remarkably, the photocurrent density of the embedded CF/(CFO@Cu x O) photocathode at zero bias is 2.73-fold higher than that of the traditional sandwich-stacked CF/Cu x O/CFO photocathode and 21.55-fold higher than that of the original CF/CFO photocathode. Furthermore, the scalability of this approach is demonstrated through the fabrication of a 100 cm 2 embedded photocathode. This work presents a scalable and cost-effective nanofabrication technique for robust photoactive films, enabling efficient and stable PEC water splitting.
