Due to the great advantages of low cost, high capacity, and excellent safety, the Zn metal is a promising candidate material for rechargeable aqueous battery systems. However, its practical applications have been restricted by the uncontrollable dendrite growth and electrode side reactions (such as corrosion, passivation, and hydrogen evolution reactions) during the plating process. Herein, we reveal that the dendrite growth would expose the electrode to more highly active tips, exacerbating the passivation of the electrode and the decomposition of the electrolyte by in situ optical microscopies. We propose a low-cost, nontoxic, low-concentration (less than 1 g/L), and effective electrolyte additive, saccharin sodium, which can guide an even Zn deposition without obvious electrode side reactions in the charge/discharge process. The saccharin anion acts as a “traffic assistant” of Zn2+ and demonstrates its great potential for practical application. The assembled Zn symmetrical battery shows an excellent cycling performance at a high current density and capacity (an extremely long cycle life over 3800 h is obtained at 5 mA/cm2 and 8 mA h/cm2, and 20 mA/cm2 and 5 mA h/cm2 show a lifetime over 800 h), and the full cell (coupled to an AC electrode) presents a stable cycle life with a capacity retention of 86.4% even after 8000 cycles at 5 mA/cm2. The saccharin sodium proposed in this work is promising to solve the anode problems in advanced Zn batteries.

Zinc is one of the essential trace elements in the human body and plays an extremely important role in physiological processes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a detection method that can be used for real-time, highly sensitive response of Zn 2+ in organisms and has low toxicity. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe NA for Zn 2+ detection based on 1,8-naphthalene dicarboxylic anhydride and dimethylpyridine amine was synthesized. Probe NA has specific recognition and real-time monitoring functions for Zn 2+ . Based on Job's plotting curve, it is inferred that the coordination ratio between probe NA and Zn 2+ is 3:1, forming a complex of [Zn(NA) 3 ] 2+ . The [Zn(NA) 3 ] 2+ exhibits obvious yellow fluorescence at 550 nm. Probe NA can achieve quantitative detection of Zn 2+ with a detection limit of 7.52 × 10 −9 M, with high selectivity and anti-interference ability. Probe NA can stably exist in a wide pH range (2–10). This indicates that it can detect Zn 2+ in complex environments. In addition, based on the low cytotoxicity, high sensitivity, and real-time monitoring characteristics of probe NA, we have expanded it to real-time monitoring of Zn 2+ in organisms (HUVEC cells and live mice), as well as qualitative and quantitative detection of Zn 2+ concentration in food and drugs.

A Zn 2+ -enhanced intelligent film was fabricated via a facile one-pot method. • The film shows enhanced mechanical strength and water resistance by metal cross-linking. • Dual-mode colorimetric/fluorescence response to ammonia enables real-time monitoring. • High sensitivity and accuracy in shrimp freshness detection were demonstrated. • Provides a intuitive solution for intelligent food packaging. This study innovatively employs Zn 2+ as a dual-functional enhancer to address the weak signal and single response of flavonoid-based smart packaging. A multifunctional film, SCP/QR/Zn 2+ (SCP represents sodium alginate/carboxymethyl cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol and QR denotes quercetin), was fabricated via a one-pot method. Zn 2+ significantly improved tensile strength (19.18 MPa), elongation (73.68%), water resistance (23.73% solubility), and antibacterial activity. Crucially, Zn 2+ coordination synergistically enhanced the film's dual-mode (colorimetric/fluorescent) response to pH/ammonia, improving reliability over single-mode systems. The film exhibited a rapid, reversible response to ammonia with a 4.87 ppm detection limit. Color/fluorescence changes highly correlated (R 2 > 0.98) with shrimp TVB-N, providing a clear visual spoilage alert beyond the safety threshold (25 mg/100 g). This work offers an effective strategy to overcome natural indicators' limitations, creating a high-performance, multifunctional active packaging system. Rechargeable aqueous Zn–Mn batteries have attracted significant attention for their potential as high-safety energy storage systems in the next generation. However, the main limitation of Mn-based cathodes lies in their low practical capacity and unclear energy storage mechanism. In this study, a core–shell manganese–iron oxide nanoarchitecture (FMFO@C) cathode was introduced for the first time. This cathode not only possesses a robust structure and high conductivity but also enables three-dimensional (3D) transport of Zn ions, resulting in a significantly enhanced specific capacity, superior rate performance, and prolonged cycle life. Consequently, the evaluated aqueous Zn//FMFO@C battery demonstrates an impressive specific capacity of 441 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1 and excellent capacity retention of 118 mA h g–1 at 2 A g–1 over 3000 cycles. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the core–shell FMFO@C cathode allows for a reversible insertion of Zn2+ into the redox-active FMFO and reversible deposition–dissolution of Zn4SO4(OH)6·xH2O (ZSH) on the amorphous carbon skeleton. The proposed strategy exhibits significant merits in terms of overall practical capacity and cycling stability, which can be extended to the elaborately modifying design of cathode materials for reliable and cost-effective energy storage.

Lamellar V 5 O 12 ·6H 2 O nanobelts coupled with inert Zn(OH) 2 ·0.5H 2 O are in situ fabricated via a facile hydrothermal strategy. Herein, the inert Zn(OH) 2 ·0.5H 2 O phase acts as a buffer matrix to strengthen the structural stability of V 5 O 12 ·6H 2 O host material, relieving the severe volume variation. Therefore, benefiting from the large interplanar spacing of active V 5 O 12 ·6H 2 O and volume buffering effect of inert Zn(OH) 2 ·0.5H 2 O, V 5 O 12 ·6H 2 O/Zn(OH) 2 ·0.5H 2 O hybrid (denoted as Z-V 5 O 12 ·6H 2 O) sustainably endures the repetitive Zn 2+ /Na + insertion/extraction and boosts the electrochemical properties. As cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries, the Z-V 5 O 12 ·6H 2 O hybrid shows a high discharge capacity of 328 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 and keeps 146 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles. For nonaqueous sodium-ion batteries, the hybrid also furnishes a high initial discharge capacity of 241 mAh g −1 at a current density of 50 mA g −1 and maintains 97 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after 100 cycles.

In view of the facile reaction between carboxyl groups and zinc oxide (ZnO), Zn 2+ -carboxyl salt-bonding is constructed in ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber system by grafting reaction of glutamic acid (Glu), serving as sacrificial unit endowed EPDM-g-Glu/ZnO sample with excellent reprocessing and recycling ability. Through reaction of ZnO/methacrylic acid (MAA), EPDM-g-Glu/zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) composite is further prepared by in situ formation of ZDMA, and ZDMA is rapidly polymerized to form poly-ZDMA (PZDMA) containing massive Zn 2+ -carboxyl ion pairs once vulcanized, which exhibits fuzzy interface with the matrix. Relative to EPDM/ZDMA, the higher polymerization degree of ZDMA is achieved with the reduction of the size of PZDMA clusters, demonstrating the improvement of interfacial bonding, which results in the formation of a developed crosslinking network structure for EPDM-g-Glu/ZDMA. The mechanical strength, fracture toughness, and hysteresis loss of EPDM-g-Glu/ZDMA-40% show a significant increase in comparison with EPDM/CB-40% and EPDM/ZDMA-40%, meanwhile the relatively lower compression set and slower contact stress relaxation are achieved by energy dissipation mechanism of preferential rupture of Zn 2+ -carboxyl salt-bonding before breakage of covalent bonds during compression aging process, revealing the effective enhancement of durable sealing resilience performance.

Fe and Co single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been widely explored in many fields, while Zn SACs are still in their infancy stage. Herein, we unexpectedly found that atomically dispersed Zn2+ on N-doped carbon material (Zn-N-C) exhibited high catalytic activity on luminol-H2O2 chemiluminescence (CL) reaction. The Zn-N-C SACs were readily prepared through simple pyrolyzation of the cheap precursors (dopamine and ZnCl2). The mechanism of Zn SAC-catalyzed CL reaction of luminol-H2O2 was investigated in detail. The activity of Zn SACs originated from the Zn-N sites in the Zn-N-C structure. The monoatomic dispersion makes Zn2+ catalytic performance change from no activity to high activity in luminol-H2O2 CL reaction. This study demonstrated the particularity of the monatomic metal catalyst over the conventional metal ion. This work provides the unprecedented perspective for design of new metal SACs in CL reaction.

Precise control over the structure and morphology of nano/microarchitectures is the topic of immense interest to tune their physical features and chemical aspects for desired applications. In this work, a novel and effective Ni(OH) 2 three-dimensional nanosheet-coated marigold-like ZnO microflower (mg-ZnO@Ni(OH) 2 NSs) hybrid is designed for the nonenzymatic electrochemical determination of glucose. The morphological evolution of mg-ZnO and mg-ZnO@Ni(OH) 2 NSs was achieved by a one-pot solvothermal strategy through control over the reaction conditions without any assistance of an external shape-controlling surfactant. Furthermore, the as-fabricated mg-ZnO and mg-ZnO@Ni(OH) 2 NSs were systematically evaluated by different spectroscopic, microscopic and electrochemical characterization tools. The results indicate that highly exposed homogeneous nanocorners of mg-ZnO and the synergetic effect of Ni(OH) 2 coating, collectively improve the electrocatalytic efficiency of the designed catalyst. The mg-ZnO@Ni(OH) 2 NS-based sensing electrode exhibits excellent amperometric performance for glucose monitoring, comprising satisfactory sensitivity (259.78 and 62.82 μA mM −1 cm −2 ), wide linear range (0.084–0.941 mM and 0.941–6.50 mM), low limit of detection (0.06 µM, S / N = 3), good stability and high detection selectivity. Moreover, the designed sensor is promising for the potential application in the real-time glucose detection of human serum samples.

This work report the first AIE-based fluorescence sensor that can simultaneously detect three kinds of IIB elements (Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ ) in aqueous media. The thiourea-bridging bis-tetraphenylethylene ( Bis-TPE ) was synthesized by the condensation reaction of formyltetraphenylethylene and bis-thiosemicarbazide derivative in 82 % yield. Due to the AIE effect in the aqueous medium, the long-wavelength fluorescence was observed at 500–526 nm. It displayed high selective Zn 2+ -sensing ability with red-to-green fluorescence change, selective Cd 2+ -sensing ability with red-to-yellow fluorescence change and selective Hg 2+ -sensing ability with fluorescence enhancement, respectively. Moreover, it could detect simultaneously Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ in the mixed solution of these three kinds of cations by the fluorescence change with the assistance of Cl − and ATP. The sensing mechanism was confirmed as 1:1 stoichiometric ratio between host and guest. The detection limits were as low as 8.22×10 -8 M, 2.36×10 -7 M and 3.43×10 -8 M for Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ , respectively. These sensing abilities were applied as test strips for detecting Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ , and were used for living cell imaging, implying a high efficient and simple method for analyzing trace IIB elements (Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Hg 2+ ) simultaneously in complex environments and living bodies.

Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) for energy storage applications require a large discharge energy density and high discharge/charge efficiency. Here, 0.87BaTiO 3 -0.13Bi(Zn 2/3 (Nb 0.85 Ta 0.15 ) 1/3 )O 3 (BTBZNT) powders were synthesized via solid-state reactions, and MLCCs with sub-micron grains were fabricated using a two-step sintering method. The BTBZNT MLCCs, which are well-defined relaxor ferroelectrics, possessed relatively high permittivity, dielectric sublinearity, and negligible hysteresis. An AC breakdown strength ( BDS ) enhancement from 511 to 1047 kV/cm was obtained as the dielectric thickness ( D ) decreased from 26 to 5 μm. The strong correlation between BDS and D , described as B D S ∝ D − 0.368 , agreed well with the general macroscopic theory of thermal breakdown in insulators. The enhanced BDS afforded the BTBZNT MLCCs ( D ∼9 μm) with excellent energy storage properties with a maximum discharge energy density of 10.5 J/cm 3 and discharge/charge efficiency of 93.7% under a maximum electric field of 1000 kV/cm. The MLCCs also exhibited excellent thermal stability with discharge energy density variation <±5% over a wide temperature range of −50 to 175 °C under an electric field of 400 kV/cm. These remarkable performances make BTBZNT MLCCs promising for energy storage applications.

Amyloid fibrillation of α-synuclein is implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease and heavy metal ions such as Fe3+, Zn2+, and Cu2+are known to be involved in the process. In this work, we explored the use of FTIR spectroscopy to look into the modulation effects of Fe3+, Zn2+, and Cu2+on the amyloid fibrillation of α-synuclein. We performed a curve-fitting analysis on the FTIR amide I bands of these α-synuclein fibril systems, namely, the pristine fibril and the fibrils prepared in the presence of Fe3+, Zn2+, and Cu2+. We found that the α-synuclein fibrils under the influences of metal ions all possessed a parallel β-sheet structure, turn structure, and disordered structure, similar to that of pristine α-synuclein fibril. We also observed metal-induced increases in the proportions of the β-sheet secondary structure within the α-synuclein fibrils, with Fe3+being the most effective inducer. We performed second derivative analysis of the side chain carboxylic groups of α-synuclein fibrils and found that the side chain microenvironment of the α-synuclein fibrils was more influenced by Fe3+than Zn2+, and Cu2+. In addition, our atomic force microscopic study revealed that the morphologies of α-synuclein fibrils under the influence of Fe3+was quite different from that of the Zn2+and Cu2+systems. Our FTIR results suggested that the modulation effects of Fe3+, Zn2+, and Cu2+on α-synuclein fibrillation occurred at both secondary and quaternary structural levels. At last, we proposed a mechanistic hypothesis to interpret how metal ions could affect the morphology of α-synuclein amyloid fibril based on the conformational plasticity properties of intrinsically disordered proteins.Keywords:amyloid;FTIR;α-synuclein;fibrillation;metal ion;fibril;secondary structure

The diverse polarity of electron-donating 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde (S-D), and electron-withdrawing 4-nitrosalicylaldehyde (S–W) were conjugated with benzothiazole (BT) to develop BTS-D and BTS-W probes, respectively. The probes exhibited the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer and intramolecular charge transfer sensing mechanisms in detecting Zn 2+ . BTS-D and BTS-W achieved a quantitative detection of Zn 2+ followed by a strong cyan to green in the emission spectra, and from colorless to yellow in the UV–Vis spectra, respectively. The sensing pathways and coordination affinities between the probes and Zn 2+ were explored using a series of spectroscopic evaluations, 1 H NMR, 1 H– 1 H COSY (2D NMR), HR–MS, XPS and DFT calculations. The probes demonstrated excellent selectivity, good water solubility, and high sensitivity, securing low LOD values: 0.15 μM for BTS-W in colorimetric analysis and 14 nM for BTS-D in fluorimetric analysis in aqueous media . The advantages of the probes assessed for the detection of Zn 2+ in various water samples, Whatman paper-based sensor strips, and PC3 live cells. The findings revealed the encouraging on-site visualization in wastewater systems and bio-contents.
