Modulating the antibacterial activity of ZnO/talc by balancing the monodispersity of ZnO nanoparticles

Haiyan Wu,Yuhang Meng,Menghan Yu,Huaming Yang

The overuse or abuse of antibacterial drugs has led to serious health problems. At present, among various antimicrobial materials (natural, organic, inorganic, etc.), inorganic antimicrobial materials, especially ZnO, have received widespread attention. However, an important factor that influences the function of nanoparticles is agglomeration. The agglomeration-sensitive nature of ZnO compromises its antibacterial properties . Here, talc is used as a substrate to control the size and dispersion of ZnO, forming composite minerals with excellent antibacterial properties against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . According to transmission electron microscopy , ZnO/talc is easily adhered to bacterial cells, whereas atomic force microscopy reveals that antibacterial effects are caused by non-covalent interactions between ZnO/talc and bacterial membranes. The comprehensive investigation of antibacterial performance and interfacial interaction is conducive to our understanding of the antibacterial mechanism of inorganic compounds , and also provides new perspectives on the biological effects of inorganic nanomaterials .

Fabrication of Ag/ZnO hollow nanospheres and cubic TiO2/ZnO heterojunction photocatalysts for RhB degradation

Xiaodong Chen,Zhong-Tao Yang,Nannan Wang,Xin Gao,Gang Wang,Chunyu Song,Yunfeng Liu,Lifeng Cui

ZnO nanomaterials with the stereochemical structure were becoming a research focus in the scope of photocatalytic materials, but the ZnO was sensitive to UV light rather than the solar light source, which considerably prohibited its extended application. ZnO nanomaterials coupled with other nanomaterials could generate the alternative composite heterojunction nanomaterials to promote the photocatalytic activity. Herein, we reported two facile and feasible synthesis methods to fabricate TiO 2 /ZnO cube nanocomposites and Ag/ZnO hollow spheres by hydrothermal reaction and chemical deposition, respectively. In this regard, these composited nanomaterials have been successfully fabricated with high purities, good morphology, and crystal structure. Noticeably, in contrast with TiO 2 /ZnO and Ag/ZnO bulk nanocomposites, the Ag/ZnO hollow spheres could offer the higher activity for RhB degradation under the visible light. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance of Ag/ZnO for RhB degradation could be improved synergistically, and the effect of RhB degradation was highest when the Ag mass ratio was modulated at 10% in the sample. Furthermore, it remained a high photocatalytic efficiency even after four cycles. This protocol provided an approvable approach to fabricate efficient photocatalysts with persistent photostability in the wastewater treatment process. Graphical abstract

Morphology engineering of ZnO nanostructures for enhanced photocatalytic efficiency of In(OH)3/ZnO nanocomposite

Yinli Duan,Jing Ma,Jianan Dai,Liangsheng Qiang,Juanqin Xue

Very efficient and low-cost photocatalysts containing Indium hydroxide (In(OH) 3 ) anchored on zinc oxide (ZnO) with various morphologies (e.g., hexagonal, pyramids, elliptic, etc.) were synthesized using a hydrothermal approach. The strong interaction between In(OH) 3 and ZnO was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2 adsorption-desorption, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In(OH) 3 particles grew directly on the ZnO surface and strongly interacted with it, which contributed to the excellent photocatalytic performance of ZnO. A possible formation mechanism of the In(OH) 3 /ZnO nanostructures was proposed. Experiments on photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) showed that the photocatalytic activity of the In(OH) 3 /ZnO nanocomposites correlated with the material morphology. The highest MB removal efficiency by the In(OH) 3 /ZnO hybrid photocatalysts was 90.5% after 120 min exposure to the visible light. The significant improvement of photocatalytic activity of In(OH) 3 /ZnO hybrid can be attributed to their special structural features, which allowed for an extended spectral response as well as for enhanced separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The design principles of this hybrid material apply to other metal-oxide systems to widen variety of advanced material systems with multifunctional properties useful for sensing and other advanced applications.

Taotao Rao,Qian Qiao,Jun Zhou,Jian Zheng,Xuan Yu,Xiaoming Yu,Cunxi Zhang,Rui Wang

Self-powered hybrid plasmonic photodetectors based on Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod arrays (NRAs)/ZnO quantum dots (QDs)/poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) incorporated with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were successfully fabricated. The photoresponse performance of the ZnO NRAs/ZnO QDs/P3HT hybrid photodetectors was enhanced by the incorporation of Au NPs. The optimal ZnO NRAs/ZnO QDs-Au(250) NPs/P3HT organic-inorganic hybrid plasmonic photodetector exhibits a photo-to-dark current ratio of 2450, a responsivity of 46 mA/W and a specific detectivity of 1.88 × 10 11 Jones under 525 nm light illumination and zero bias voltage. This study offers novel insights into the utilization of metal nanoparticles to enhance the performance of organic-inorganic hybrid photodetectors.

p-GaN/n-ZnO Nanorod/CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots Decorated with ZnO Nanoseeds for Light-Emitting Diodes

Hongxiang Zhang,Chunxia Wu,Canran Zhang,Bisheng Yan,Jiyuan Guo,Gangyi Zhu,Jun Dai

In this paper, we report the dual-wavelength green-light emission from zinc oxide (ZnO)-nanoseed-decorated p-GaN (gallium nitride)/n-ZnO nanorod/CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) light-emitting diodes (LEDs). At the same time, the effect of ZnO nanoseeds on the p-GaN/n-ZnO nanorod/CsPbBr3 QDs LED performance is deeply studied. ZnO nanoseeds were fabricated by magnetron sputtering and the sol–gel method; then ZnO nanorods were obtained on GaN by hydrothermal treatment to form the p-GaN/n-ZnO nanorod heterojunction, and green CsPbBr3 QDs were further deposited on ZnO nanorod arrays to realize LEDs. The results show that magnetron-sputtering ZnO nanoseeds can induce regular vertical ZnO nanorod arrays, and the corresponding device presents a better electroluminescence (EL) performance. The X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and EL mechanisms indicate that the p-GaN/n-ZnO nanorod with magnetron-sputtering ZnO nanoseeds has a better crystalline interface. Our results indicate that the p-GaN/n-ZnO nanorod/CsPbBr3 QDs heterojunction structure can be served as dual-wavelength LEDs, and magnetron-sputtering ZnO nanoseeds can give rise to a better EL performance.

Inhibition of photocorrosion and photoactivity enhancement for ZnO via specific hollow ZnO core/ZnS shell structure

Linhui Yu,Wei Chen,Danzhen Li,Jubao Wang,Yu Shao,Miao He,Peng Wang,Xiuzhen Zheng

Hollow ZnO core/ZnS shell structure (ZnO/ZnS HCSS) has been successfully synthesized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. It is found that such a ZnO/ZnS HCSS exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than pure ZnO and ZnS toward the liquid-phase degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation. What is more noteworthy, it is also demonstrated that ZnO/ZnS HCSS photocatalyst overcomes the photocorrosion in comparison to pristine ZnO by mean of cycling tests toward MO. The detailed degradation process of MO over ZnO/ZnS HCSS is investigated by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry method. And then, the roles of active species in the photocatalytic process are discussed by using different types of active species scavengers. Meanwhile, combined with the electron spin resonance and photocurrent test, the degradation mechanism of the photocatalysts is proposed. It is hoped that the work could provide valuable information on the design of specific structure materials with more excellent properties and set the foundation for the further industrial application.

Pseudocapacitive Li+ intercalation in ZnO/ZnO@C composites enables high-rate lithium-ion storage and stable cyclability

Qin Li,Han Zhang,Shuaifeng Lou,Yunteng Qu,Pengjian Zuo,Yulin Ma,Xinqun Cheng,Chunyu Du,Yunzhi Gao,Geping Yin

Metallic oxide ZnO is considered to be a promising alternative anode material for lithium ion battery because of its high theoretical capacities (978   mA   h   g −1 ). However, its inherent low electronic conductivity and undesirable large volume change result in inferior electrochemical performances and hinder its practical application. Herein, ZnO/ZnO@C composites are prepared by a simple carbonization process of ZnO/ZnO@ZIFs-8, which are constructed by using ZnO particles as both template and zinc sources for zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) preparation via a facile solution reaction. When evaluated as anode for lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared composites show an initial capacity of 878   mA   h   g −1 at current density of 0.1   A   g −1 with high capacity retention of 95.6% after 50 cycles, and an initial capacity of 359   mA   h   g −1 tested at 5.0   A   g −1 with a capacity retention of 85.3% after 500 cycles, exhibiting outstanding cycling stability and excellent rate capability. The ameliorated electrochemical performances are mainly attributed to the elevated conductivity and cushioning effects provided by carbon framework derived from ZIF-8, and the enhanced pseudocapacitance behavior originated from the decreased size of ZnO particles and high surface area of ZIFs-derived carbon.

Colloidal synthesis of Cu–ZnO and Cu@CuNi–ZnO hybrid nanocrystals with controlled morphologies and multifunctional properties

Deqian Zeng,Pingyun Gong,Yuanzhi Chen,Qinfu Zhang,Qingshui Xie,Dong-Liang Peng

Metal–semiconductor hybrid nanocrystals have received extensive attention owing to their multiple functionalities which can find wide technological applications. The utilization of low-cost non-noble metals to construct novel metal–semiconductor hybrid nanocrystals is important and meaningful for their large-scale applications. In this study, a facile solution approach is developed for the synthesis of Cu–ZnO hybrid nanocrystals with well-controlled morphologies, including nanomultipods, core–shell nanoparticles, nanopyramids and core–shell nanowires. In the synthetic strategy, Cu nanocrystals formed in situ serve as seeds for the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of ZnO, and it eventually forms various Cu–ZnO hetero-nanostructures under different reaction conditions. These hybrid nanocrystals possess well-defined and stable heterostructure junctions. The ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectra reveal morphology-dependent surface plasmon resonance absorption of Cu and the band gap absorption of ZnO. Furthermore, we construct a novel Cu@CuNi–ZnO ternary hetero-nanostructure by incorporating the magnetic metal Ni into the pre-synthesized colloidal Cu nanocrystals. Such hybrid nanocrystals possess a magnetic Cu–Ni intermediate layer between the ZnO shell and the Cu core, and exhibit ferromagnetic/superparamagnetic properties which expand their functionalities. Finally, enhanced photocatalytic activities are observed in the as-prepared non-noble metal–ZnO hybrid nanocrystals. This study not only provides an economical way to prepare high-quality morphology-controlled Cu–ZnO hybrid nanocrystals for potential applications in the fields of photocatalysis and photovoltaic devices, but also opens up new opportunities in designing ternary non-noble metal–semiconductor hybrid nanocrystals with multifunctionalities.

Electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide by ZnO-based materials and multiphysical parameter regulation of Ni-substituted ZnO

Xinyu Yin,Xin Zhang,Jin Li,Wenjun Chu,Wen Xie,Jiaping Hu,Lulu Tang,Qin-Xin Luo,Han-Shu Xu

The development of highly sensitive electrochemical sensors for rapid and accurate quantification of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is of great significance in biological, clinical, and various other fields. However, there remains insufficient understanding of how to optimize material structures to enhance sensing performance and the mechanisms by which physical parameter regulation influences sensing properties. In this work, we report the growth of micron-scale, Ni-substituted needle-shaped ZnO arrays on a flexible interdigitated electrode substrate, achieved through the initial synthesis of a nanostructured ZnO seed layer. Electrochemical experiments revealed that Ni-substituted ZnO exhibits superior H 2 O 2 sensing performance compared to needle-shaped ZnO arrays and the ZnO seed layer. The incorporation of Ni significantly reduces the resistivity, increases the specific surface area, and enhances the adsorption of oxygen species. Importantly, we employed multiple physical parameters, including magnetic field, UV illumination, and mechanical strain, to regulate the H 2 O 2 sensing performance of Ni-substituted ZnO, and clarified the underlying physical mechanisms behind these regulations. In short, our ZnO-based flexible materials provide a promising approach for non-invasive, real-time H 2 O 2 monitoring, holding strong potential for wearable medical devices and point-of-care applications.

Facile preparation of cellulose nanocrystals/ZnO hybrids using acidified ZnCl2 as cellulose hydrolytic media and ZnO precursor

Jiancong Kang,Chuanshuang Hu,Anthony Dichiara,Litao Guan,Hong Yun,Jin Gu

Hybridization of nanocellulose with zinc oxide nanoparticles can improve the dispersibility of the zinc oxide and bring new functions to the bio-based products. In this study, cellulose nanocrystal/zinc oxide (CNC/ZnO) nanohybrids with reinforcing and antibacterial properties were prepared via a facile one-pot route. Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was first treated with acidified zinc chloride and hydrolyzed into CNCs, which then served as a stabilizing and supporting agent for the in-situ growth of ZnO nanoparticles during subsequent chemical precipitation. The acidified ZnCl 2 solution played a dual role, acting both as cellulose hydrolytic media and as ZnO precursor. By adjusting the pH of the zinc precursor solution (pH = 9–12), well-dispersed rod-like (length: 137.0–468.0 nm, width: 54.1–154.1 nm) and flower-like (average diameter: 179.6 nm) ZnO nanoparticles with hexagonal wurtzite structure were obtained. CNC/ZnO nanohybrids were incorporated into waterborne polyurethane (WPU) films. The Young's modulus and tensile strength of the nanocomposite films increased gradually from 154.8 to 509.0 MPa and from 16.5 to 29.9 MPa, respectively, with increasing CNC/ZnO nanofiller content up to 10 wt%. The 10 % CNC/ZnO composites showed inhibition rates to both E. coli and S. aureus above 88.8 %.

Electronic Metal-Support Interactions Between CuxO and ZnO for CuxO/ZnO Catalysts With Enhanced CO Oxidation Activity

Lyu Shuai,Zhang Yuhua,Li Zhe,Liu Xinyue,Tian Zhenfang,Liu Chengchao,Li Jinlin,Wang Li

Metal-support interaction has been one of the main topics of research on supported catalysts all the time. However, many other factors including the particle size, shape and chemical composition can have significant influences on the catalytic performance when considering the role of metal-support interaction. Herein, we have designed a series of CuxO/ZnO catalysts as examples to quantitatively investigate how the metal-support interaction influences the catalytic performance. The electronic metal-support interactions between CuxO and ZnO were regulated successfully without altering the structure of CuxO/ZnO catalyst. Due to the lower work function of ZnO, electrons would transfer from ZnO to CuO, which is favorable for the formation of higher active Cu species. Combined experimental and theoretical calculations revealed that electron-rich interface result from interaction was favorable for the adsorption of oxygen and CO oxidation reaction. Such strategy represents a new direction to boost the catalytic activity of supported catalysts in various applications.

Mitochondria-Dependent Oxidative Stress Mediates ZnO Nanoparticle (ZnO NP)-Induced Mitophagy and Lipotoxicity in Freshwater Teleost Fish

Guang-Hui Chen,Chang-Chun Song,Tao Zhao,Christer Hogstrand,Xiao-Lei Wei,Wu-Hong Lv,Yu-Feng Song,Zhi Luo

Due to many special characteristics, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are widely used all over the world, leading to their wide distribution in the environment. However, the toxicities and mechanisms of environmental ZnO NP-induced changes of physiological processes and metabolism remain largely unknown. Here, we found that addition of dietary ZnO NPs disturbed hepatic Zn metabolism, increased hepatic Zn and lipid accumulation, downregulated lipolysis, induced oxidative stress, and activated mitophagy; N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis (2-pyridylmethyl) ethylenediamine (TPEN, Zn2+ ions chelator) alleviated high ZnO NP-induced Zn and lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, and mitophagy. Mechanistically, the suppression of mitochondrial oxidative stress attenuated ZnO NP-activated mitophagy and ZnO NP-induced lipotoxicity. Taken together, our study elucidated that mitochondrial oxidative stress mediated ZnO NP-induced mitophagy and lipotoxicity; ZnO NPs could be dissociated to free Zn2+ ions, which partially contributed to ZnO NP-induced changes in oxidative stress, mitophagy, and lipid metabolism. Our study provides novel insights into the impacts and mechanism of ZnO NPs as harmful substances inducing lipotoxicity of aquatic organisms, and accordingly, metabolism-relevant parameters will be useful for the risk assessment of nanoparticle materials in the environment.
