InP quantum dots (QDs) are emerging as promising materials for replacing cadmium-based QDs in view of their heavy metal-free and tunable luminescence. However, the development of InP QD materials still lags due to the expensive and flammable phosphorus precursors, and also the unsatisfactory repeatability caused by the fast nucleation rate. Adopting lowly reactive P precursor aminophosphine can overcome this issue, but their low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and widening line widths do not apply to the practical application. Through engineering, the core-shell structure of QD, significantly promoted green emissions of QDs were obtained with PLQY of 95% and full width and half maximum (FWHM) of 45 nm, which demonstrated the highest PLQY record obtained from the aminophosphine system. Moreover, due to the residue halogen atoms on the QD surface as inorganic ligands to prevent further oxidization, these InP QDs demonstrated the ultra-long operational lifetime (over 1000 h) for QDs based color enhancement film. By optimizing the device structure, an inverted green InP quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) with external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.06% was also demonstrated, which showed a significant promise of these InP QDs in highly effective optoelectronic devices.

Norfloxacin (NOF) is an environmentally harmful and ubiquitous aquatic pollutant with extensive production and application. In this study, a novel composition named carbon-based composite photocatalytic material of zinc oxide and zinc sulphide (ZnO/ZnS@BC) was successfully obtained by the impregnation-roasting method to remove NOF under UV-light. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer characterised the composition. ZnO/ZnS was successfully decorated on the surface of biochar (BC). The pH, the ZnSO 4 /PS ratio, and ions and quenchers, were investigated. High removal efficiency was obtained with a pH of 7 and a ZnSO 4 /PS ratio of 1:1, and the removal ratio of NOF reached 95% within three hours; the adsorption and degradation ratios reached 46% and 49%, respectively. Fe 2+ promoted the degradation of NOF, whereas other ions inhibited it, with NO 3 − showing the strongest inhibitory effect. Three reactive species (tert-butanol, quinone, and ammonium oxala) were identified in the catalytic system. The decreasing order of the contribution of each reactive species was: O 2 − > ·OH − > h + . Additionally, a recycling experiment demonstrated the stability of the catalyst; the catalytic degradation ratio of NOF reached 78% after five successive runs. Therefore, ZnO/ZnS@BC possessed strong adsorption capacity and high ultraviolet photocatalysis ability.

The use of co-catalysts can observably enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production activity. In this work, a novel visible-light driven photocatalyst, (MoSe 2 -RGO)/(Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /ZnS)/RuO 2 nanocomposite, is prepared for the first time by loading Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 , MoSe 2 -RGO and RuO 2 on the surface of ZnS nanoparticles. Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 as an effective visible-to-ultraviolet up-conversion luminescence agent can provide the ultraviolet-light to activate wide band-gap ZnS. MoSe 2 -RGO and RuO 2 , acting as conduction band co-catalyst and valence band co-catalyst, respectively, can effectively separate the photo-generated carriers and supply more reactive sites. The activities of the photocatalysts were assessed via photocatalytic hydrogen production in Na 2 S and Na 2 SO 3 aqueous solution under 300 W xenon lamp irradiation. In addition, the visible-light irradiation time and used times of the prepared samples as influence factors on the photocatalytic hydrogen production were also investigated. It was easily found that the prepared (MoSe 2 -RGO)/(Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 /ZnS)/RuO 2 nanocomposite shows fairly high activity in photocatalytic hydrogen production, compared with single ZnS photocatalyst. It was mainly attributed to the excellent up-conversion luminescence property of Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 and the efficient separation of photo-generated electrons and holes caused by MoSe 2 -RGO and RuO 2 . This research may pave an effective way for photocatalytic hydrogen production utilizing solar light.

Owing to their environmentally friendly characteristic, InP-based quantum dots (QDs) show great potential in various fields as an alternative to Cd-based QDs. However, the current mainstream synthesis process, the (TMS)3P-based injection method, still faces many challenges, such as the high cost of (TMS)3P and complex temperature control. In contrast, the solvothermal method is considered to be more feasible and reproducible. Despite its potential advantages, little has been done to understand how the precursors influence the synthesis of InP QDs using the solvothermal method. In this research, InZnP/ZnS QDs were synthesized using practical phosphorus precursors (DEA)3P or (DMA)3P. Through the feasible regulation of zinc, indium, phosphorus and sulfur precursors, the band gap of the QDs could be widely and accurately tuned, and a much wider photoluminescence wavelength ranging from 484 nm to 651 nm could be achieved. Furthermore, InI3 and InBr3 contributed to the blueshift in the PL wavelengths, and the combination of (DEA)3P, (DMA)3P, n-DDT and t-DDT refined the PL wavelength with a small tuning gap of 5 nm.

Catalytic reduction of CO 2 is usually accompanied by competitive H 2 evolution. However, the selectivity between CO 2 reduction and H 2 evolution is not completely understood hitherto. Here ZnS is chosen as the model catalyst to study this and are prepared by hydrothermal treatment of ZnS(en) 0.5 precursor. ZnS nanoparticles exhibit high production yield of solar fuels due to the formation of internal Sphalerite-Wurtzite phase junction within a single particle. The predominant product of H 2 can reach a yield as high as 31.5 mmol/g-cat after 4-h reaction, meanwhile with a high CO yield of 279.3 μmol/g-cat. The mechanism is proposed from both dynamic (adsorption/desorption of reactants/products) and thermodynamic (redox potential, change in Gibbs free energy of key intermediates) point of view. This work not only provides useful information on the reaction selectivity between CO 2 reduction and H 2 evolution, but also pave a way to adjust the yield of a specific product upon photocatalysis.

Epitaxially growing a semiconductor shell on the surface of upconversion nanocrystals to form a core/shell structure is believed to be a promising strategy to improve the luminescent efficiency of lanthanide ions doped in particle cores and, meanwhile, enriches the optical properties of the resulting nanocrystals. However, liquid-phase synthesis of such core/shell-structured nanocrystals comprised of a lanthanide ion-doped core and semiconductor shell remains challenging because of the chemical incompatibilities between lanthanides and the most intermediate gap semiconductors. In this context, the successful growth of ZnS shell on a KMnF3 core codoped with Yb3+/Er3+ ions is reported to enhance the upconversion luminescence of Er3+ ions. The underlying core/shell formation mechanism is elucidated in detail combining the hard–soft acid–base theory with structural analysis of the resulting nanocrystals. Quite unexpectedly, Mn2+ diffusion across the core/shell interface occurs during ZnS shell growth, giving rise to Mn2+ emission from the ZnS shell. Thus, the resulting core/shell particles exhibited unique up/downconversion luminescence from doped lanthanide metal ions and transition-metal ions, respectively. By manipulating the ion diffusion and shell growth kinetics, the upconversion and downconversion luminescent performance of KMnF3:Yb,Er@ZnS nanocrystals are further optimized and the related mechanisms are discussed. Further, temperature-dependent upconversion and downconversion photoluminescence properties of KMnF3:Yb,Er@ZnS nanocrystals show potential for ratiometric luminescence temperature sensing.

Background: The approach for the determination of aminoimidazo-azaarenes (AIAs) is urgently required due to their mutagenic activity and potential carcinogenicity. For this purpose, a CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (CdSe/ZnS QDs)-embedded molecularly imprinted silica gel with high selectivity
and sensitivity was successfully prepared and applied to analyze such target. Methods: Herein, CdSe/ZnS QDs acted as the fluorescent probe, and molecularly imprinted silica gel as a recognition probe was synthesized on the surface of QDs via sol-gel method. 2- Aminobenzimidazole, which
has a similar structure with AIAs, as well as low cost and low toxicity, was selected as the dummy template. Results: The material has a high imprinting factor (IF=6.15); the linear range of CdSe/ZnS@MIP as a fluorescent sensing material for AIAs is 0.5-20.0 μg L-1
with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.25 μg L-1 (3σ/s). Moreover, the fluorescent materials have been further applied to determine AIAs in beef floss and grilled fish fillet with satisfactory recoveries (82.8-110.8 %), and the relative standard deviation (RSD)
is < 5.5%. Conclusion: The proposed CdSe/ZnS QDs-embedded molecularly imprinted silica gel can be used to easily and selectively detect AIAs.

An innovative phosphorescence probe based on Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (Mn:ZnS QDs) was developed for selective detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) via inner-filter effect (IFE). Mn:ZnS QDs were synthesized by water method and modified with L-Cysteine for better stability, and the average diameter of the nanometer particle was 3.8 nm. With the excitation wavelength at 289 nm, the strong phosphorescence of Mn:ZnS QDs can be emitted at 583 nm. The excitation spectrum of Mn:ZnS QDs was substantially overlapped with the absorption spectrum of the target CAP. The excited light of Mn:ZnS QDs can be absorbed partially by CAP when they coexist, the phosphorescence intensity decreased with the increasing concentration of CAP, and it has a good linear relationship. Under optimal conditions, the linear relational concentration range achieved four orders of magnitude from 25 to 1 . 2 × 1 0 5 ng ⋅ mL − 1 ( R 2 = 0 . 9 9 9 ), with a detection limit (LOD; S ∕ N = 3 ) down to 0.81 ng ⋅ mL − 1 . The simple, rapid and low cost IFE phosphorescent probe exhibited satisfactory recoveries ranging from 88.9% to 98.5% for CAP analysis in spiked honey, which shows a potential for routine screening of CAP in ensuring the food safety.

Graphical Anchored down : Ultrafine ZnS is successfully introduced into carbon aerogel (CA) to form a cathode for lithium–sulfur batteries. The nanoporous ZnS-CA composites present excellent electrochemical performances, owing to the ZnS nanoparticles having a strong affinity for Li 2 S n species. Furthermore, the strong affinity was validated by first-principles theory calculations; the results clearly reveal the anchoring and catalytic mechanism. A carbon aerogel composite modified with ZnS (ZnS-CA) was successfully prepared through a simple in situ synthesis and used as a cathode for lithium-sulfur batteries. The nanopore ZnS-CA composites with a high specific surface area and rich mesoporous structure exhibit stronger adsorption and immobilization ability for polysulfides. The ZnS-CA/S cathode materials offer excellent electrochemical performances with lasting cycling stability and high specific capacity. In particular, the 6ZnS-CA/S sample achieves an initial capacity of 1352 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C and maintains a high capacity of 1119 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. Furthermore, after 300 long cycles, it still maintains a high capacity of 730 mAh g −1 at 1 C. These excellent performance features are attributed to the strong affinity of ZnS for Li 2 S n species, thus polysulfide shuttling can be effectively inhibited from the cathode source. Furthermore, the strong adsorption energy between ZnS and polysulfides was validated by using first-principles theory calculations, which reveals the anchoring and catalytic mechanism.

A type I core/shell structured Bi2S3@ZnS photocatalyst was synthesized by an electrostatic interaction mechanism and used for the photoelectrochemical detection of Cu2+. The Bi2S3@ZnS composite showed excellent photoelectrochemical activity and stability due to the high photoelectrochemical activity of Bi2S3 and the anti-photocorrosion function of the ZnS shell. In addition, the ZnS shell also provided a transfer platform for the photogenerated holes through its acceptor states (i.e. VZn and IS) and suppressed the recombination of photogenerated carriers. The photocurrent signal of the obtained Bi2S3@ZnS/ITO electrode was much higher than that of pure Bi2S3 under visible-light irradiation. When it was used for the photoelectrochemical sensing of Cu2+, a wide detection range (0.003–30.0 μM) and a low detection limit (0.001 μM) were observed. The sensor also displayed high stability and acceptable selectivity. It was applied to detect real samples and good results were achieved.

The optical properties of doped semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) are strongly affected by the dopant position inside the host lattice. However, controlling the dopant position in Cu(I) doped core/shell semiconductor NCs is still unexplored due to the high ionic mobility of Cu(I) ions at the doping temperature. In this paper, we report the doping of Cu(I) ions into CdS/ZnS core/shell NCs via a cation exchange strategy. During the doping, the exciton emission of CdS NCs is reduced and the dopant emission becomes intensified as the doping level is increased from 0 to 1.1%, and the PL profile of the final product is very similar to that of uncoated CdS:Cu(I) NCs. Such an optical change is very different from that observed in the products synthesized by a conventional method, in which no exciton emission of CdS NCs is observed. During the Cu(I) doping process, the variation of the dopant emission may arise from the doping position change from the outside ZnS shell to the inside CdS core in the CdS/ZnS core/shell NCs. The deduction can be further verified by the optical change by direct heating of a small amount of Cu(I) doped CdS/ZnS NCs in a non-coordinating solvent. This work offers a cation exchange strategy for fabricating Cu(I) doped core/shell NCs with tuned dopant positions, which will open up rich opportunities for tuning the optoelectronic properties of Cu(I) doped semiconductor NCs.

The cytotoxicities of the elements of current quantum dots (QDs) greatly restrict their applications in biomedical fields. Herein, we firstly proposed and synthesized oil-soluble heavier-element-free (or Cd-free) CuFeS2/ZnS QDs, and focused on the synthetic controls over the core/shell structure. It was found that although the as-prepared CuFeS2 QDs are nonemissive, the in situ ZnS-overcoating could make them exhibit bright near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (PL) (PL peak at 840 nm; PL quantum yield (QY) up to 52%). We also analyzed their shape, structure and elemental composition in detail. Next, by the interaction between oil-soluble QDs and liposomes, the aqueous QD-laden liposomes (named as LipQDs) were fabricated, allowing further exploration of bio-application. Finally, after further decorating with isolated macrophage membrane, the resulting LipQDs@M nanocomposites were observed to target actively postoperative tumor inflamed tissue (or other inflamed tissues), using an in vivo small animal IR optical imaging system. Our results indicate that these NIR-emitting CuFeS2/ZnS QDs should be a new promising fluorescent marker for biomedical optical imaging, as an alternative for Cd-, Hg-, and Pb-based ones.
