Biofunctionalized bacterial cellulose grafted with bacitracin for wound healing

Ao Haiyong,Duan Keke,Zhang Dongxue,Xun Xiaowei,Feng Fangfang,Liu Huiwen,Li Jiaxin,Li Yaqiang,Wan Yizao

Bacterial cellulose (BC) with excellent flexibility and biocompatibility has aroused great attention for wound healing. However, the surface inertness of BC nanofibers tremendously hindered its biofunctionalized to improve the antibacterial ability and cytocompatibility. Herein, the biofunctionalized BC was fabricated by in situ growing a uniformly polydopamine (PDA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating and grafting bacitracin (BA) on the coating (BA-PPBC). The results confirmed that the BA-grafted PDA/PEI coating was distributed uniformly on the surface of BC nanofibers, and the natural three-dimensional pore structure and other physical properties of pristine BC were retained. Compared to BC, the obtained BA-PPBC materials exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against the adhesion and colonization of S. aureus and MRSA . Moreover, the BA-PPBC not only had no obvious cytotoxicity to NIH-3T3 cells, but also improved the adhesion, proliferation, and spread out of cells. This work provides a biofunctionalized BC dressing to simultaneously meet the requirements of wound healing.

Preparation of green and gelatin-free nanocrystalline cellulose capsules

Yapei Zhang,Qing Zhao,Huashan Wang,Xingyu Jiang,Ruitao Cha

The ambiguous source and uncontrolled solubility of gelatin make it crucial to develop gelatin capsule substitutes. Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) of excellent mechanical performance, good biocompatibility and green origin has drawn many attentions as a new class of biomaterials. In this work, NCC capsule was prepared by dipping method with PEG and glycerol as plasticizer. The effect of PEG and glycerol on the rheological property of NCC gel and the surface morphology of NCC capsule was evaluated. The disintegration time of NCC capsule meet the criteria in United States Pharmacopoeia (USP32-701).There is no significant difference in the release of sulfuric acid between gelatin capsule and NCC capsule. NCC capsule thus has the potential as a green platform for biomedical applications in drug delivery.

Synthesis of dioctyl sebacate catalysed by cellulose-immobilized lipase

Yuyang Zhou,Rongchen Mang,Huiyi Long,Yamiao Li,Hua Zhou,Dingqiang Lu

Dioctyl sebacate is a long carbon chain dibasic acid ester with methylene as the main body. It is widely used in plasticizers because of its good cold resistance and high viscosity. And it has excellent properties of non-toxicity and easy biodegradation, so it can be used as a potential new green bio-based plasticizer. At present, most of the preparation methods of dioctyl sebacate are chemical methods, which have many by-products and cause environmental pollution. In this article, cellulose microspheres were used as a carrier to immobilize Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) to catalyse the esterification of sebacic acid and n-octanol to prepare dioctyl sebacate. Through single factor experiments, the lipase immobilized on cellulose microspheres was optimized to determine the best process conditions: add 500 µL CALB to the erlenmeyer flask, and then add 0.02 mol/L PBS buffer (pH 8.0). After being prepared into a 5 mL system, 0.1 g of cellulose microspheres were added as a carrier and reacted for 3 h at 35 °C and 180 r/min. Added 0.5 vt% polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDEG) to the system for crosslinking. The final immobilization rate of lipase immobilized on cellulose microspheres was 80.06%, and the enzyme activity was 288.07 U/g. Using the cellulose-immobilized lipase as a catalyst, in the toluene system, the molar ratio of n (sebacic acid)/n (n-octanol) substrate was 1:3.5, the amount of immobilized enzyme was 0.04 g, 4 Å molecular sieve 1.5 g, 40 °C, and 150 r/min for 30 h, the conversion rate of dioctyl sebacate was 76.45%.

Stable MXene/cellulose nanofiber membranes as osmotic energy generators

Ruoyang Sun,Yumeng Xia,Mengyuan Peng,Yinghui Wang,Jinming Zhang,Qingtao Liu,Shouwei Zhang,Jinfeng Wang

Osmotic energy is a clean and renewable alternative resource to non-renewable fossil fuel. Harvesting this “blue” energy typically required ion-selective membranes. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal scaffolds for constructing nanofluidic ion-selective membranes in osmotic energy conversion. However, the 2D membranes were often fragile and instable in solutions because of the weak van der Waals interactions between two-dimensional nanosheets. Here, stable MXene nanofluidic membranes were constructed by incorporating cellulose nanofiber (CNF) in MXene. The CNF was used as binder to enhance the mechanical stability in solutions. The resulted MXene/CNF membranes were investigated in terms of structure, ion selectivity and osmotic energy generation. The results showed that the MXene/CNF membranes exhibited excellent cation selectivity due to the negative charged carried by MXene and CNF, benefiting the osmotic energy conversion. The maximum power output density reached up to 1.32 and 0.338 W m −2 at 1000-fold KCl and 50-fold NaCl concentration gradient, respectively. Moreover, this MXene/CNF energy generator exhibited a long-term output stability. This work demonstrated the great potential of nanofluidic generators based on the two-dimensional material and the biomass material cellulose for osmotic energy conversion processes.

Unveiling structure and performance of tea-derived cellulose nanocrystals

Liping Wang,Yukun Li,Lei Ye,Chaohui Zhi,Tao Zhang,Ming Miao

In this study, cellulose was extracted from black tea residues to produce black tea cellulose nanocrystals (BT-CNCs) using an optimized acid hydrolysis method. The structure and performance of BT-CNCs were evaluated. The results showed that the optimal conditions for acidolysis of BT-CNCs included a sulfuric acid concentration of 64 %, a solid-liquid ratio of 1:18 ( w / v ), a hydrolysis temperature of 45 °C, and a hydrolysis time of 50 min. The optimization process resulted in a 44.8 % increase in the yield of BT-CNCs, which exhibited a crystallinity of 68.57 % and were characterized by the typical cellulose I structure. The diameters of the particles range from 5 to 45 nm, and they exhibit aggregation behavior. Notably, BT-CNCs demonstrated excellent storage stability, and the Tyndall effect occurred when exposed to a single beam of light. Although the thermal stability of BT-CNCs decreased, their primary thermal degradation temperature remained above 200 °C. The colloidal nature of BT-CNCs was identified as a non-Newtonian fluid with “shear thinning” behavior. This study introduces a novel method to convert tea waste into BT-CNCs, increasing the yield of BT-CNCs and enhancing waste utilization. BT-CNCs hold promise for application in reinforced composites, offering substantial industrial value.

Transparent zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers-based coatings for marine antifouling

Yanyi Duan,Jiangjiexing Wu,Aihua Qiao,Xin Guo,Xiaotian Ge,Wei Qi,Anastasia Penkova,Rongxin Su

Marine optical devices face significant biofouling challenges, which compromise their transparency and disrupt their functionality. Existing coatings, typically relying on toxic biocides or dynamic surfaces, harm the marine environment and fail to meet the signal stability required for high-performance equipment. In this study, we introduce a fully bio-based approach to transparent antifouling coatings by developing zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers (ZCNF) modified with lysine, arginine, and histidine. Notably, this innovative modification exhibits enhanced hydrophilicity and antifouling properties compared to unmodified cellulose nanofibers, while also forming a stable antifouling surface, overcoming the key limitations of conventional materials. Laboratory and marine field tests demonstrate the remarkable long-term performance of ZCNF coatings, achieving up to 90 % antifouling efficiency in controlled environments and 80 % in real-world conditions after 150 days. This work provides a sustainable alternative for marine optical coatings, advancing the application of bio-based nanomaterials to address real-world marine challenges.

Preparation of Graphene Oxide/Cellulose Composites with Microcrystalline Cellulose Acid Hydrolysis Using the Waste Acids Generated by the Hummers Method of Graphene Oxide Synthesis

Yuanyuan Miao,Xiuya Wang,Yixing Liu,Zhenbo Liu,Wenshuai Chen

The Hummers method is the most commonly used method to prepare graphene oxide (GO). However, many waste acids remain in the raw reaction mixture after the completion of this reaction. The aim of this study was to reuse these waste acids efficiently. In this study, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was directly dissolved in the mixture after the high-temperature reaction of the Hummers method. The residual acid was used to hydrolyze MCC, and the graphene oxide/microcrystalline cellulose (GO/MCC) composites were prepared, while the acid was reused. The effects of MCC addition (0.5 g, 1.0 g, and 1.5 g in 20 mL) on the properties of the composites were discussed. The structure, composition, thermal stability, and hydrophobicity of GO/MCC composites were characterized and tested by SEM, XRD, FTIR, TG, and contact angle tests. The results showed that MCC could be acid hydrolyzed into micron and nano-scale cellulose by using the strong acidity of waste liquid after GO preparation, and it interacted with the prepared GO to form GO/MCC composites. When the addition amount of MCC was 1 g, the thermal stability of the composite was the highest due to the interaction between acid-hydrolyzed MCC and GO sheets. At the same time, the hydrophobic property of the GO/MCC composite is better than that of the GO film. The freeze-dried GO/MCC composites are more easily dispersed in water and have stronger stability.

A flexible phase change gel with complementary regulation of haze and supercooling degree by hydroxyethyl cellulose and cellulose nanocrystals for light and thermal management

Yunjie Ju,Jiayu Liu,Yonggui Wang,Zefang Xiao,Yanjun Xie

The phase change gel offers temperature regulation capability. • HEC and CNC synergistically regulate optical properties and lowered supercooling. • The gel exhibites thermal responsiveness in both optical and mechanical properties. • Smart windows from the gel are used for energy saving and daylight simulation. With the increasing demands for sustainable development and visual comfort, smart window materials integrating light regulation and energy conservation have experienced rapid advancement. This paper presented a strategy based on hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) free radical polymerization to prepare phase-change gels for smart windows, which combine thermal energy storage with light regulation functions. Utilizing polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the energy storage component, leveraging its thermally responsive solid-liquid phase change characteristics, and incorporating the complementary effects of sulfonated cellulose nanocrystals (SCNC) on optical properites and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) on supercooling degree, the regulation of transmittance and haze was achieved, with an enthalpy of melting reaching 103.11 J g −1 . Within the operating temperature ranging from melting point to 40 ℃, the transmittance consistently remained above 80% with increasing SCNC addition, while the haze can be adjusted from 1.06% to 91.06%. EnergyPlus simulation results demonstrated that the smart window achieved an annual energy saving rate of 13.89% in Phoenix, while providing soft indoor lighting, offering significant potential for green and sustainable transformation in the construction industry. A partial dissolution-regeneration strategy for preparing water-resistant composite film of cellulose I and cellulose II with high light transmittance and adjustable haze

Lijiaqi Zhang,Yong Huang,Min Wu

Due to the excellent properties of nanocellulose film such as biodegradability and renewability, researchers have conducted in-depth research on it in recent years. However, rich hydroxyl groups on the surface of nanocellulose make it hydrophilic , and small gaps between the fibrils have significant capillary effect, which cause the strength of nanocellulose film drastically deteriorates when exposed to water, severely restricting its scope of use. In this study, the nanocellulose prepared by ball milling was used to prepare nanocellulose film, and the surface of the film was partially dissolved by ZnCl 2 . The dense regenerated cellulose (Cellulose Ⅱ) with Zn 2+ on the surface made the film hydrophobic, effectively reduced the water absorption rate of the film, and also maintained the internal structure of the nanocellulose. Through this strategy, the nanocellulose film with high dry strength (151–176 MPa), wet strength (27.6–31.7 MPa), high light transmittance (80–91%), and adjustable haze (50–90%) was obtained. This study provides a facile and environmentally friendly strategy to improve the wet strength of nanocellulose film, which broadens its application prospect in packaging materials and electronic devices.

Synthesis of water-soluble, fully biobased cellulose levulinate esters through the reaction of cellulose and alpha-angelica lactone in a DBU/CO2/DMSO solvent system

Min Pei,Xinwen Peng,Yuqing Shen,Yunlong Yang,Yuanlong Guo,Qiang Zheng,Haibo Xie,Hui Sun

Cellulose esters are important cellulose derivatives with good processing ability and material properties. The design and sustainable synthesis of cellulose esters are prime research topics. Herein, cellulose levulinate esters (CLEs) with degrees of substitution (DSs) ranging from 0.15 to 2.04 were simply prepared through an atom-economic reaction between cellulose dissolved in a newly developed 1.8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene/dimethyl sulfoxide/carbon dioxide solvent system and alpha-angelica lactone, a biomass-derived and commercially available platform chemical, without the addition of any external catalysts or condensation reagents. The optimized reaction conditions of 120 °C, 0.5 h, and a 5/1 molar ratio of alpha-angelica lactone to the hydroxyl groups in cellulose resulted in CLEs with appropriate DSs and satisfactory material properties. The structures and thermal properties of the CLEs were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermal gravimetric analysis to develop an in-depth understanding of the correlations among the chemical structures, thermal properties, and mechanical properties. A study of solubility in conventional solvents indicated that the CLEs with appropriate DSs were soluble in water, providing a green processing strategy to prepare CLE films with tensile strengths of up to 72 MPa and elongation at break values of up to 26.7%. The morphologies of the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The cytotoxicity of the water-soluble CLEs was also evaluated in vaginal epithelial cells (VK2/E6E7) to identify the potential of the CLEs for biomedical applications.

Facile preparation of self-assembled high-performance cellulose based composite

Ming Yan,Hailong Lu,Ting Wu,Lili Zhang,Jinxia Ma,Xiaofan Zhou

The huge accumulation of plastic wastes is emerging as a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. Herein, inspired by the reinforcement principle of lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCC) in the natural trees, we design a green, highly efficient, and eco-friendly method to prepare cellulose composites with excellent performances. Cationic Guar Gum (CGG) and Lignosulfonate (LS), which are derived from biomass, are employed as raw materials to form LS-CGG complexes (LGC) acted as LCC analogs to improve the performance of the cellulose framework. Based on the principle of electrostatic interactions , a self-assembled and facile infiltrated strategy has been applied in the preparation of the LGC-filter paper complex (LGC-FP), which can be industrial-scale manufactured employing established and mature processes from pulping and papermaking industry. This work provides an eco-friendly, low-cost, and scalable route to prepare bioplastics, which is a promising alternative to address the “white pollution” and reach the carbon neutrality goal to a certain extent.

Characterization and antibacterial effect of quaternized chitosan anchored cellulose beads

Yinfeng Tan,Hao Wu,Tianzhi Xie,Lingling Chen,Shuqian Hu,Huafeng Tian,Yutang Wang,Jianguo Wang

Some thermoduric food spoilage bacteria pose great threat to beverage industry . To tackle the challenge, hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HTCC) grafted magnetic cellulose beads have been prepared via a dropping technology. Sodium periodate oxidation process was carried out to form dialdehyde functional groups on the regenerated cellulose beads mixed with maghemite nanoparticles . HTCC was anchored on the beads through Schiff base reaction. The structure and properties of HTCC anchored beads were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Thermal stability of the beads was estimated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal gravity (DTG), and the decomposition temperature of the beads were around 200–300 °C. A long-term antibacterial activities of the beads against Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris were confirmed caused by the covalent bond between HTCC and the beads. The biodegradable HTCC grafted cellulose beads may provide a novel approach for food safety management .
