Iron-based metalloporphyrins as efficient catalysts for aerobic oxidation of biomass derived furfural into maleic acid

Yongdi Xie,Yi Huang,Chunyan Wu,Wenwen Yuan,Yongmei Xia,Xiang Liu,Haijun Wang

A series of porphyrin type catalysts with the metal active sites of Fe were prepared and investigated in aerobic oxidation of biomass-based furfural to maleic acid (MAD) in aqueous phase. The catalytic performance of meso -tetrakis(4-bromophenyl)porphyrin iron (III) chloride (FeT( p -Br)PPCl) immobilized on different supports was evaluated. It was interesting to find that the catalytic activity varied with the supports and followed the trend: FeT( p -Br)PPCl/SBA–15 > FeT( p -Br)PPCl/meso-ZSM–5 > FeT( p -Br)PPCl/MCM-41. The effect of reaction conditions were discussed in detail over FeT( p -Br)PPCl/SBA-15 catalyst, and 56.1% yield and 73.8% selectivity of MAD were obtained from renewable furfural under the optimal conditions. Moreover, the FeT( p -Br)PPCl/SBA-15 catalyst could be reused five times without a significant decrease of activity in recycling examinations.

Production of liquid fuel intermediates from furfural via aldol condensation over potassium-promoted Sn-MFI catalyst

Wenzhi Li,Mingxue Su,Tingwei Zhang,Qiaozhi Ma,Wei Fan

Liquid fuel intermediates can be produced via aldol condensation reactions between furfural and acetone. It was found that potassium-promoted Lewis acid zeolite Sn-MFI performed superior catalytic performance for C C bond coupling by aldol condensation reactions of furfural with acetone. The presence of K in Sn-MFI catalyst improves the catalytic activity of the catalyst likely due to increased basicity. The product distribution of aldol condensation was also changed remarkably with the addition of K. Besides 4-(2-furyl)-3-buten-2-one (FAc), 1, 5-di-2-furanyl-1, 4-pentadien-3-one (F 2 Ac) was also formed in the existence of K compared with pure Sn-MFI. It was also found that the K-promoted Sn-MFI catalyst is more resistant to water and exhibits enhanced selectivity to F 2 Ac.

Efficient conversion of fructose to 5-[(formyloxy)methyl]furfural by reactive extraction and in-situ esterification

Xiong Caixia,Sun Yong,Du Juan,Chen Wei,Si Zhihao,Gao He,Tang Xing,Zeng Xianhai

5-[(Formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), an analogue of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is becoming more attractive due to its superior stability and hydrophobicity, which make it easier to refineand store. In the present study, FMF was produced from fructose by one-pot approach in pure formic acid media or by a two-step approach via HMF in choline chloride (ChCl)/fructose deep eutectic solvents (DES) system. A favorable FMF yield of 63.22% was reached by two-step approach. In addition, the effects of reaction parameters, such as temperature and acidity, on preparation of FMF from fructose were systematically investigated. The dehydration of fructose into HMF was confirmed as the rate-controlling step in the consecutive reaction. Ultimately, the separation and purification procedures of FMF were put forward. The FMF with a purity of 98.8% was obtained finally. Meanwhile, the FMF purified by saturated sodium bicarbonate solution showed an excelled storage stability.

Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol over Acid-Activated Attapulgite-Supported NiCoB Amorphous Alloy Catalyst

Haijun Guo,Hairong Zhang,Liquan Zhang,Can Wang,Fen Peng,Qianlin Huang,Lian Xiong,Chao Huang,Xinping Ouyang,Xinde Chen,Xueqing Qiu

Acid-activated attapulgite (H+-ATP)-supported NiCoB amorphous alloy catalysts were applied to the selective hydrogenation of furfural (FUR) to furfuryl alcohol (FA). The reduction process between metallic ions impregnated in/on H+-ATP and BH4– is important to modify the textural properties of catalyst, because of the secondary activation of H+-ATP. The enhancement of interaction between H+-ATP and NiCoB particles promotes the dispersion of NiCoB amorphous alloy. Under the optimal conditions (140 °C, 3 MPa H2, 800 rpm, 3.8 wt % of NiCoB active component with respect to FUR), FUR conversion of 91.3%, and FA selectivity of 82.0% were achieved over the best catalyst (20%NiCoB/H+-ATP). Moreover, the catalyst was recycled six times and showed an increase of 3.9% in FUR conversion and 8.2% in FA selectivity, which might be due to the newly generated Co–Ni alloy active site. The low-cost nature of H+-ATP makes the supported NiCoB catalyst a potential catalyst for the industrial production of FA.

Pt/CeO2@MOF Core@Shell Nanoreactor for Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural via the Channel Screening Effect

Yan Long,Shuyan Song,Jian Li,Lanlan Wu,Qishun Wang,Yu Liu,Rongchao Jin,Hongjie Zhang

Designing metal–organic framework (MOF)-encapsulated hybrid catalysts is considered as an effective way to realize catalytic selectivity because of advantages related to the unique channels of MOF. Here, a sodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSS)-induced, microwave-assisted route was developed to controllably construct Pt/CeO2@MOF core@shell hybrids. Using PSS as a modifying agent and followed by microwave assistance, MOFs could be continuously grown in an oriented manner on Pt/CeO2 nanospheres. The obtained Pt-CeO2@UIO-66-NH2 exhibited high conversion (99.3%) with high selectivity (>99%) for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. It showed that the CeO2 would promote the catalytic activity, whereas the size confinement effect of the UIO-66-NH2 channels can enhance the catalytic selectivity. This work highlights a useful strategy toward the universal synthesis of highly active, stable, and selective catalysts for further utilization.

Synergistic effects of anionic surfactants on adsorption of norfloxacin by magnetic biochar derived from furfural residue

Changjing Li,Yuan Gao,Aimin Li,Lei Zhang,Guozhao Ji,Kongyun Zhu,Xuexue Wang,Yulin Zhang

Norfloxacin (NOR) is a persistent organic pollutant and can be effectively removed from effluent by adsorption of biochar. However, the presence of other emerging contaminants , such as surfactants, will potentially alter adsorption performance of norfloxacin by biochar and the molecular-scale mechanisms of the interaction between surfactants and biochar remain poorly understood. In this study, adsorption of norfloxacin on magnetic biochar prepared with iron-containing furfural residue (FRMB) in the presence or absence of anionic surfactants was investigated. The adsorption of NOR was significantly affected by the initial pH and anionic surfactants-sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). In the presence of SDS and SDBS, the maximum sorption capacities of NOR were 2.33 and 1.97 times higher than that in the absence of surfactants, reached to 698.6 mg g −1 and 589.9 mg g −1 , respectively. The optimal pH condition which was 4 indicated that electrostatic adsorption played a decisive role in the adsorption process after introduction of SDS/SDBS. The adsorption data were fitted well by the Elovich model and Freundlich model at the optimal conditions in which both SDS and SDBS were hemimicelle (0.8 mM SDS or 0.4 mM SDBS), indicating surface heterogeneity of FRMB and the adsorption mechanism was related to the assembly of surfactants on biochar. FTIR results showed that FRMB and SDS/SDBS interacted through hydrophobic action, and more complex or aggregates were formed between the NOR and biochar/SDS/SDBS. This work highlights the synergistic enhancement effects of tested surfactants on the removal of NOR by magnetic biochar from aqueous systems.

Cis-trans adsorption configuration influenced high-efficient hydrogenation of furfural over zeolite-encapsulated PtCu bimetallic catalyst

Wei Luo,Song Song,Wuyu Zhao,Tong Ding,Ye Tian,Xingang Li

Bimetallic catalysts are promising materials for high-efficient conversion of lignocellulose to value-added chemicals, but synthetic methods with reasonable generality are still lacking. Herein, we report a novel method for synthesizing bimetallic catalyst PtCu@S-1(S-1, silicalite‑1) via zeolite encapsulation with the aid of protecting chelating ligands. PtCu@S-1 displays remarkable activity for the hydrogenation of furfural (FUR) to furfuryl alcohol (FOL), and its apparent turnover frequency (TOF) values reach up to 735 mmol FUR ·mmol Pt −1 ·h −1 and 88 mmol FUR ·mmol Cu −1 ·h −1 , which are ∼ 16 and ∼ 4 times higher than that of Pt@S-1 and Cu@S-1. Interestingly, we for the first time find that OO-trans FUR is a preferable adsorption configuration over OO-cis FUR on PtCu@S-1 due to the Pt sites coordinating with the carbon atom on the furan ring. More importantly, the adsorption ability of OO-trans FUR is stronger than that of OO-cis FUR, which increases the concentration of adsorbed species on PtCu@S-1 and accelerates the hydrogenation of FUR.

Catalytic transformation of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethyl furfural over tin phosphate in a water-containing system

Min Zhang,Xinli Tong,Rui Ma,Yongdan Li

The dehydration of carbohydrates to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the presence of tin salt and hydrogen phosphate is examined. The precipitate freshly formed from SnCl 4 and (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 shows a good performance in a water-dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) mixed solvent. The highest HMF yield achieves 71% at 135   °C for 1   h. The tin valence number, the type of phosphate and the molar ratio of Sn/PO 4 affect the yield of HMF. In addition, the reaction time, temperature and water to DMSO ratio also influence the yield. Glucose and sucrose as the reactant are compared, and the reaction pathways are discussed.

Construction of Atomically Dispersed Niδ+ Species on Leaf-like Al2O3 for Selective Transfer Hydrogenation of Furfural

Zhang Qian,Li Yuanzheng,Pan Zhengyi,Wang Guang-Hui

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of α , β -unsaturated aldehydes to α , β -unsaturated alcohols over metal oxide catalysts is of potential for industrial application. Herein, we have developed a Ni/f - Al 2 O 3 catalyst comprising atomically dispersed Ni δ + (2 <  δ  < 3) species on porous leaf-like Al 2 O 3 , over which a > 97% yield of furfuryl alcohol (FOL) from CTH of furfural (FFR) is obtained with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 216 h − 1 . Most importantly, the catalyst can be recycled at least 6 times without obvious loss of activity. Its superior catalytic performance can be attributed to the abundant and stable Ni δ + -type acid-base pairs on the surface of Ni/f - Al 2 O 3 .

Hydrogenation of Biomass-Derived Furfural to Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol over Hydroxyapatite-Supported Pd Catalyst under Mild Conditions

Chuang Li,Guangyue Xu,Xiaohao Liu,Ying Zhang,Yao Fu

Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFAL), as a green industrial solvent, can be obtained directly from biomass-derived furfural with 100% conversion and 100% yield over a hydroxyapatite-supported Pd catalyst (Pd-HAP) under relatively mild conditions (40 °C, 1 MPa H2, and 3 h) in 2-propanol. At room temperature and reacting for 8 h, the yield of THFAL was more than 99%. By capturing the intermediates, two pathways were proposed as follows: (1) Furfural was partially hydrogenated to furfuryl alcohol, and then, furfuryl alcohol was further hydrogenated to THFAL. (2) Furfural and 2-propanol first formed 2-(isopropoxymethyl)furan (2-IPMF) via etherification, and then, 2-IPMF was ultimately converted to THFAL. The Pd-HAP catalyst was characterized by various techniques including XRD, SEM, TEM, HAADF-STEM, XPS, and ICP-AAS. The results revealed that the outstanding catalytic performance of Pd-HAP was attributed to the quasicoordination effect between Pd and HAP, which not only contributed to highly dispersed and stable Pd nanoclusters but also led to better activation of hydrogen. The recyclability of the Pd-HAP catalyst was also investigated and proved its stability in the conversion of furfural and high selectivity toward THFAL.

Conversion of C5 Carbohydrates into Furfural Catalyzed by SO3H-Functionalized Ionic Liquid in Renewable γ-Valerolactone

Haizhou Lin,Jingping Chen,Yuan Zhao,Shurong Wang

To obtain an efficient and green reaction system for the production of furfural (FF), this study investigated the use of a SO3H-functionalized ionic liquid as a catalyst for the conversion of xylose in a solvent of renewable γ-valerolactone (GVL). A high FF yield of 78.12% was obtained in this reaction system catalyzed by 1-propylsulfonic-3-methylimidazolium chloride at 140 °C. The GVL remarkably enhanced the reaction rate and increased the xylose conversion and FF yield because the solvent effect of GVL could improve the catalytic activity of the acidic protons and suppress the side reactions. In addition, the ionic liquids showed satisfactory catalytic performance in the conversion of xylose to FF due to functionalization by introducing a SO3H group. The conversion of other C5 carbohydrates (arabinose and xylan) was also tested in this system, and moderate FF yields were achieved.

Catalytic conversion of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethyl furfural over sulfonated hyper-cross-linked polymer in DMSO

Kaijun Dong,Jun Zhang,Weimin Luo,Lin Su,Zhilin Huang

An acid functionalized porous organic hyper-cross-linked polymer (HCP) derived from benzene monomer was prepared for catalytic dehydration of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) in a DMSO solvent. Systematic characterizations of the HCP catalysts including essential structural properties, sulfur content and acid amount, were identified by XRD, XPS, FESEM, Raman, NH 3 -TPD, TGA, nitrogen physisorption and elemental analysis. Optimization of reaction parameters such as acid amount, solvent, substrate type, temperature and catalyst dosage, and comparison with reported solid acids were systematically investigated. The results showed that sulfonated HCP materials were highly active in fructose dehydration, which could afford a highest HMF yield of 96.7% at almost 100% fructose conversion in 30 min. Furthermore, the catalyst presented satisfied performance and stability during recycling tests. More importantly, the sulfonated HCP catalysts also exhibited promising activity in hydrolytic reaction, esterification and transesterification for platform chemicals production in biomass transformation.
