Performance of soybean protein adhesive cross-linked by lignin and cuprum

Zheng Liu,Tao Liu,Yue Li,Xin Zhang,Yecheng Xu,Jianzhang Li,Qiang Gao

As a substitute for aldehyde adhesives, soybean protein adhesive has drawn wide interest in addressing formaldehyde pollution in human living rooms. However, during the preparation process, the addition of a cross-linking agent from petroleum resources is necessary to improve the strength and cause the problems of high viscosity and brittleness . Inspired by the adhesion structure of catechol in mussels, lignin with a catechol structure was constructed by one-step demethylation in this study. Lignin, copper ions , and soybean protein isolate were mixed to produce a biobased adhesive exhibiting a triple network structure without adding a petroleum-based epoxy crosslinking agent. The quinone in the lignin and the amino group in the soybean protein underwent a cross-linking reaction to ensure the bond strength and water resistance of the adhesive. The catechol structure built a sacrificial network by forming hydrogen bonds to improve the toughness and coating performance of the adhesive. Multifunctional copper ions formed multiple interface coordination bonds, reducing the viscosity of the adhesive. The wet shear strength of the adhesive with the triple cross-linked network structure reached 1.29 MPa, which was 92.5% higher than that of the pristine adhesive. The viscosity decreased to 24340 mPa s, reflecting a reduction of 84%, and the toughness and coating performance improved. Notably, the prepared adhesive showed mildew resistance (120 h), antibacterial properties (antibacterial zone = 6.8 mm), flame retardancy , and low VOCs release (6.86 × 106 mg/m2·h).

Adsorption behavior and mechanism of amine/quaternary ammonium lignin on tungsten

Baoping Zhang,Heng Zhang,Yin Wang,Shiyuan Fang

Amine/quaternary ammonium lignin for adsorption of tungsten was synthesized by amination and quaternization from lignin. The adsorbent was characterized by SEM-EDS and FTIR. The effects of pH, initial concentration of tungsten, adsorption time and dosage of adsorbent on the adsorption effect were investigated. The adsorption mechanism was revealed by SEM-EDS and FTIR and XPS. The results showed that amine/quaternary ammonium lignin was loose and rough and contained a large number of phenolic hydroxyl and amine and quaternary ammonium functional groups. Using the optimum conditions, which included the pH of 4.0 and initial tungsten concentration of 800 mg·L −1 and adsorption time of 960 min, the saturated adsorption capacity of 1 g·L −1 amine/quaternary ammonium lignin for tungsten reached 421.68 mg·g −1 . The adsorption followed Langmuir model and quasi-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption was monolayer homogeneous chemisorption. When the total concentration of tungsten was 0.005 mol·L −1 and the value of pH was smaller than 4.7, H 2 W 12 O 40 6− was the existing form of tungsten and was adsorbed by electrostatic attraction of hydrogen bond and coordination with amino and ion exchange with Cl − .

Antimicrobial Lignin-Based Polyurethane/Ag Composite Foams for Improving Wound Healing

Shuqi Li,Yansheng Zhang,Xiaozhen Ma,Shihui Qiu,Jing Chen,Guangming Lu,Zhen Jia,Jin Zhu,Qiu Yang,Jing Chen,Yen Wei

Antimicrobial materials are an urgent need for modern wound care in the clinic. Although traditional polyurethane foams have proven to be clinically valuable for wound treatment, their petroleum-originated preparation and bioinert nature have restricted their efficacy in biomedical applications. Here, we propose a simple one-step foaming method to prepare lignin-based polyurethane foams (LPUFs) in which fully biobased polyether polyols partially replace traditional petroleum-based raw materials. The trace amount of phenolic hydroxyl groups (about 4 mmol) in liquefied lignin acts as a direct reducing agent and capping agent to silver ions (less than 0.3 mmol), in situ forming silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) within the LPUF skeleton. This newly proposed lignin polyurethane/Ag composite foam (named as Ag NP-LPUF) shows improved mechanical, thermal, and antibacterial properties. It is worth mentioning that the Ag NP-LPUF exhibits more than 99% antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli within 1 h and Staphylococcus aureus within 4 h. Evaluations in mice indicate that the antimicrobial composite foams can effectively promote wound healing of full-thickness skin defects. As a proof of concept, this antibacterial and biodegradable foam exhibits significant potential for clinical translation in wound care dressings.

High overall performance transparent bamboo composite via a lignin-modification strategy

You-Yong Wang,Fang-Liang Guo,Yuan-Qing Li,Wei-Bin Zhu,Yao Li,Pei Huang,Ning Hu,Shao-Yun Fu

Development of transparent material derived from fast-growing natural bamboo is a promising and sustainable alternative for traditional glass materials . Here, we propose an effective strategy to prepare a transparent bamboo composite via lignin-modification and epoxy infiltration . This lignin-modification method can well maintain the integrity of natural bamboo, which provides a robust framework for the epoxy infiltration. The lignin-modified bamboo shows a high whiteness with significantly reduced light absorbance from 3 to 0.8 compared with natural bamboo. The above two aspects guarantee that the transparent bamboo composite obtained offers a high optical transparency of 87% over the visible wavelength range and a high tensile strength of 118 MPa simultaneously. Compared with conventional glasses, the as-prepared transparent bamboo composite has higher overall performance. Specifically, the transparent bamboo composite demonstrates the following advantages: (1) high optical haze (90%), which is beneficial to creating uniform indoor light distribution; (2) high toughness (4.5 MJ/m 3 ), which is helpful to absorbing energy; (3) low density (1.2 g/cm 3 ), which is good to lowering weight, and (4) low thermal conductivity (around 0.33 W/mK), which is only one third of conventional glasses and good for thermal insulation . The transparent bamboo composite with excellent overall performance has great potential in engineering applications , particularly for energy-efficient buildings.

Harnessing solar energy for electrocatalytic biorefinery using lignin-derived photothermal materials

Xinpeng Zhao,Lei Shi,Bing Tian,Shujun Li,Shouxin Liu,Jian Li,Song Liu,Tony D. James,Zhijun Chen

The bio-refinery of lignocellulose exhibits great potential for sustainable development. However, technical barriers for proper utilization of lignin and heavy energy consumption have challenged the profitability and sustainability of such biorefineries. Here, we efficiently converted lignin to photothermal materials (D-Lig-Fe) by the demethylation of lignin and coordinating with Fe3+, producing electricity that could be utilized for the electrocatalytic conversion of 5-hydromethyl-2-furaldehyde (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) when coupled with a thermoelectric generator (TEG) in the bio-refinery. Specifically, D-Lig-Fe exhibited robust and high photothermal efficiency (∼36%), producing electricity up to 1.6 V upon natural solar irradiation assisted by a Fresnel lens together with TEG. The as-generated electricity drove a high-yielding conversion of HMF to FDCA via NiCoB catalyst-based electrocatalysis in the bio-refinery. We anticipate that this research will help establish an efficient and practical approach toward an integrated biorefinery.

Photo-assisted shape memory lignin/cellulose acetate composites for information encryption

Haiying Yang,Dong Wang,Hongjie Bi,Zechun Ren,Min Xu,Zhenhua Huang,Liping Cai

An information encryption device using shape memory cellulose acetate (CA) as matrix, and lignin as photothermal agent was developed. Such information encryption was chiefly composed of two steps, that is, information concealing by fixing temporary shapes and information decryption by restoring original shape based on preset sequential lighting commands. This film device was fabricated readily by solution blending. Further related analyses on the photo-assisted shape memory mechanism of such composites were carried out. Compared to other samples, the CA/lignin-3 composites possessed the most excellent shape memory properties as its shape recovery angle of 180° and shape fixation angle of 30°. It had good mechanical, thermomechanical, and superior photothermal conversion properties. The elongation at break and tensile strength was 24% and 4.5 MPa, the glass transition temperature was 30–130°C. The results of the Fourier transform infrared and Ultraviolet–Visible spectra illustrated the tight relationship between conjugated chromophoric systems and photothermal conversion of composites.

Lignins and Lignin Derivatives as Dispersants for Copper Phthalocyanine Pigment Nanoparticles

Jiang Yang,Xintong Wang,Hailing Liu

Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) is a widely used organic blue pigment with color brilliance, light fastness, and low cost. However, its poor dispersibility in aqueous solutions limits the water-borne application. Lignin’s hyperbranched polymer structure makes it a potential dispersant. In this study, lignin is functionalized with carboxylic acid (−COOH) and amine (−NH2) to enhance the interaction with aqueous solutions. Their applications as dispersants for CuPc in aqueous solutions are investigated together with commercially available alkali lignin, dealkali lignin, and lignosulfonate. The effectiveness of dispersion stability is evaluated by the suspension stability. Lignin-NH2 enhanced the suspension stability of CuPc to allow 94 wt % CuPc particles to remain suspended in water for 24 h compared to 24.4 wt % with no dispersant added. The mechanism of dispersion is revealed by the measurements of zeta potential and particle size, as well as the calculation of lignin adsorption amount on CuPc. Moreover, the lignins are applied to disperse CuPc in acrylic resin as a water-based paint application. With the aid of lignin-NH2 dispersant, CuPc enhances the tinting strength to 110.75% without altering the blue color through color difference measurements. Lignin-NH2 contributes to both better suspension stability and tinting strength than a commercially available dispersant dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS).

Lignin-based silicone-modified epoxy resin with enhanced strength and toughness

Gang Li,Chaohua Li,Peiying Li,Rong Sun,Liqiang Cao,Pengli Zhu

Epoxy composites with enhanced strength and toughness are vital in the field of electronic packaging material . This study proposes the synthesis of a novel lignin-based silicone-modified epoxy resin (LSE) to improve the strength and toughness of epoxy resins (EPs) simultaneously. The results demonstrate that the glass transition temperature , β -relaxation temperature, and crosslinking density of the composites decreased with increasing LSE content. Compared to neat EP, the toughness properties, including the impact strength and critical stress intensity factor ( K 1C ), of the 3 wt% LSE/EP composite improved by 16.25 % and 25.28 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties such as the tensile strength , bending modulus , and bending strength enhanced by 25.81 %, 16.21 %, and 42.43 %, respectively. Therefore, the LSE simultaneously exhibits toughening and strengthening effects . Based on the fracture surface evaluation results obtained using a scanning electron microscope and a nano-FTIR, these effects are attributed to the formation of interpenetrated networks and improved interfacial effects by the LSE. As an efficient fortifier and flexibilizer, LSE shows great promise for the preparation of EP packaging materials.

Defect Engineering Promoted Photocatalysis for Lignin Depolymerization: Performance and Mechanism Insight

Dingliang Dai,Jianhao Qiu,Guanglu Xia,Yong Tang,Jianfeng Yao

Defect engineering has shown a pronounced promise in photocatalysis. In this study, ZIF-8-NH2@Bi/Bi2MoO6 with oxygen vacancies was elaborately developed for efficient Cβ–O bond cleavage of a typical lignin model, 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol (PP-ol) and alkali lignin. The surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi nanoparticles, the heterojunction between ZIF-8-NH2 and Bi2MoO6, and the Schottky junction between Bi and Bi2MoO6 together facilitate charge separation and transfer. More significantly, the oxygen vacancy could efficiently facilitate O2 capture and activation to generate 1O2 that acts as a dominant role in promoting Cβ–O bond cleavage while holes could only convert PP-ol into 2-phenoxy-1-acetophenone. As a result, 93% of PP-ol was converted into phenol and acetophenone (AP) with yields of 57% and 48%, respectively, over ZIF-8-NH2@Bi/Bi2MoO6 in air, which is obviously higher than those over ZIF-8-NH2@Bi2MoO6 (46% of PP-ol conversion, 8.7% of phenol yield and 6.2% of AP yield). Moreover, in a pure O2 environment, 100% of PP-ol conversion, 69% of phenol yield, and 68% of AP yield could be achieved. As for alkali lignin extracted from Pinus massoniana, a high vanillin yield of 25 mg/glignin could be obtained with Cβ–O bond cleavage. This work could offer an in-depth insight into catalyst design as well as photocatalytic valorization of biomass.

Demethylation of ethanol organosolv lignin by Na2SO3 for enhancing antioxidant performance

Ying Han,Zihao Ma,Xing Wang,Yuanyuan Sheng,Yu Liu

Natural polyphenol antioxidants have excellent antioxidant activity and degradability which are considered as one of the possible alternatives to chemical synthetic antioxidants. Here, lignin-based polyphenols were prepared from poplar lignin, pine lignin and rice husk lignin by demethylation, and no toxic reagents were used in the preparation process. The phenolic hydroxyl groups of all three lignin were increased and the methoxyl content was significantly reduced after the demethylation without degradation or structural changes in the lignin as shown by GPC and 2D HSQC analyses. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of the modified lignin was significantly increased. In this paper, a green and efficient strategy was developed to prepare lignin-based polyphenols with high phenolic hydroxyl content, low molecular weight , strong antioxidant activity and low cytotoxicity, which have a promising future in the field of antioxidant applications.

Construction of photo-responsive lignin as a broad-spectrum sunscreen agent

Ying Wu,Jie Gao,Jian-Hui Li,Bo-Kun Chen

Lignin has potential to serve as promising sunscreen agents as it has good ultraviolet (UV) absorption and antioxidant properties. However, the weak absorption capacity of lignin in the long-wave UV region (UVA, 320–400 nm) limits its further development. In this work, a spiropyran-modified lignin (DLSP) with photo-responsive property was prepared by in-situ construction of spiropyran (SP) structure in the demethylated lignin (DL). Due to the presence of SP moiety, the absorption of DLSP in the UVA region was significantly improved. Under UV irradiation, its absorption peak was redshifted as unconjugated SP form isomerized to conjugated merocyanine (MC) form, and the UVA/UVB ratio increased from 0.62 to 0.74. The free-radical scavenging ability of lignin could protect SP from photodegradation , which provided DLSP excellent fatigue resistance. DLSP were blended into creams to investigate its sunscreen performance. Results indicated that DLSP exhibited radiation-enhanced sunscreen performance, the sun protection factor (SPF) of cream containing 10 wt% of DLSP improved from 20 to 67 after 8 h of UV irradiation. Moreover, DLSP showed low skin penetration and good biocompatibility. These results provide a useful guideline for the rational design of sunscreens with special functionalities.

Phototransformation of Lignin-related Compounds in Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter Solutions

Ruiya Zhou,Juan Liu,Chi Zhou,Xu Zhang

Lignin is a major terrestrial source of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and studying the phototransformation of lignin monomers and their related compounds can enhance our understanding of CDOM intramolecular interactions. Coniferyl aldehyde (Coni) and sinapaldehyde (Sina) form ground-state complexes with CDOM, with equilibrium constants of 7,800 (± 1,800) and 20,000 (± 2,000) M −1 , respectively. In comparison, vanillin (Van) exhibits minimal affinity for CDOM complexation. The bimolecular reaction rate constants between singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and these phenolic carbonyl compounds ranged from 0.46 (± 0.02) to 1.8 (± 0.1) × 10 7 M −1 s −1 , which is approximately one order of magnitude lower than their reaction rate constants (0.51 (± 0.02)–1.25 (± 0.02) × 10 8 M −1 s −1 ) with the triplet excited state of CDOM ( 3 CDOM*). In acidic CDOM solutions (pH 5.0), 1 O 2 , H 2 O 2 , and organic peroxyl radicals had negligible impact on the transformation. Comparing the initial transformation rate in the presence and in the absence of NaN 3 or furfuryl alcohol led to an overestimation of the contribution of 1 O 2 to the transformation of Van, Coni, or Sina. 3 CDOM* scavengers could not fully inhibit the transformation of Coni or Sina. The remaining transformation is considered to arise from either the unquenched intra-CDOM phase 3 CDOM* or a fraction of Coni⊂CDOM or Sina⊂CDOM complex, which underwent intramolecular photoinduced chemical reactions.
