The grafted mangrove endophytic fungus Fusarium sp. #ZZF51 by phytic acid with polyphosphate groups (PA-ZZF51) was successfully synthesized by esterification reaction, and its uranium(VI) biosorption conditions, models, mechanism and regeneration property were also obtainted. The uranium(VI) removal from aqueous solution by PA-ZZF51 was optimized at pH (5.0), S/L ratio (0.2 g L −1 ), time (45 min), and the initial uranyl ions concentration (100 mg L −1 ) with 453.70 mg g −1 of biosorption capacity and 90.74% of removal percentage, respectively. Kinetic and equilibrium biosorption studies showed pseudo-second-order equation and Langmuir isotherm model could better fit with the experiment data. FTIR and SEM of the prepared material indicated the various functionalities on the mycelium surface including hydroxyl, carboxyl, phosphate groups and so on were responsible for the binding of uranyl ions.

Despite many important industrial applications, epoxy resin (EP) suffers from high flammability and toxicity emission, extremely hampering their applications. To circumvent the problem, core–shell structured ZIF67@ZIF8 is successfully synthesized and further functionalized with phytic acid (PA) to obtain PA-ZIF67@ZIF8 hybrids. Then, it is used as an efficient flame retardant to reduce the fire risk of EP. The fire test results show a significant reduction in heat and smoke production. Compared with EP, incorporating 5.0 wt % PA-ZIF67@ZIF8 into EP, the peak heat release rate, total heat release, and peak carbon monoxide production are dramatically reduced by 42.2, 33.0, and 41.5%, respectively. Moreover, the EP/PA-ZIF67@ZIF8 composites achieve the UL-94 V-0 rating and the limiting oxygen index increases by 29.3%. These superior fire safety properties are mainly attributed to the excellent dispersion and the catalytic effect of metal oxide and phosphorus-containing compounds. This work provides an efficient strategy for preparing a promising ZIF-based flame retardant for enhancing flame retardancy and smoke toxicity suppression of EP.

A new high-efficiency adsorbent for cationic and anionic dyes named PAGD was synthesized via polymerization of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate by employing glycidyl-methacrylate-modified phytic acid as a cross-linker. The experiment demonstrated that PAGD is pH-sensitive, and the maximum adsorption capacities of anionic dye Reactive Red 24 (RR24) and cationic dye Fuchsin Basic (FB) were 1871.23 and 482.54 mg g−1, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no previous report on a dye adsorbent possessing an adsorption capacity of over 465 mg g−1 for RR24. The excellent adsorption abilities toward RR24 are due to the introduced phytic acid groups, which could promote protonation of tertiary amine groups under acid pH conditions. Moreover, PAGD is able to selectively remove RR24 in a mixed solution of cationic dye and RR24. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of PAGD fit well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively. These results imply that PAGD is a promising adsorbent for removal of both cationic and anionic dyes.

Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are widely used in the field of water treatment. However, there are inevitably various fouling problems during long-term use. Surface engineering of RO membranes, such as hydrophilic modification, has attracted broad attention for improving the anti-fouling performance. In this work, we constructed a green biomimetic composite modification layer on the surface of polyamide membranes using a dopamine (DA)/tannic acid (TA) co-deposited layer to bridge the polyamide surface and hydrophilic phytic acids (PhA). The DA/TA interlayer could firmly adhere to the RO membranes, reducing the aggregation of DA and providing abundant phenolic hydroxyl sites to graft PhA. Meanwhile, the anchored PhA molecule bearing six phosphate groups could effectively improve the superficial hydrophilicity. The membranes were characterized by the SEM, AFM, XPS, water contact angle test, and zeta potential test. After surface modification, the hydrophilicity, smoothness, and surface electronegativity were enhanced obviously. The flux and rejection of the virgin membrane were 76.05 L·m−2·h−1and 97.32%, respectively. While the modified D2/T4-PhA membrane showed decent permeability with a water flux of 57.37 L·m−2·h−1and a salt rejection of 98.29%. In the dynamic fouling test, the modified RO membranes demonstrated enhanced anti-fouling performance toward serum albumins (BSA), sodium alginates (SA), and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromides (DTAB). In addition, the modified membrane showed excellent stability in the 40 h long-term test.

A novel P–N–Si coflame retardant comprising bio-based phytic acid/melamine–coated SiO 2 (PM@SiO 2 ) was designed. The effects of a combination of a 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO)-derived compound (PN-DOPO) with PM@SiO 2 on the flame retardancy and thermal decomposition of WPU were investigated. Compared with pure WPU, the WPU/PN-DOPO/PM@SiO 2 composites possessing different PM@SiO 2 addition amounts demonstrated enhanced flame retardancy. The addition of 5 wt% PM@SiO 2 and 9 wt% PN-DOPO increased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of pure WPU from 19.0% to 29.4%, and the resulting material achieved a V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. Furthermore, the peak heat release rate (pHRR), total heat release (THR), and fire growth index of WPU/9%PN-DOPO/5%PM@SiO 2 considerably decreased by 36.1%, 29.1%, and 41.9%, respectively. The excellent flame retardancy is attributed to the ability of PM@SiO 2 to effectively repair defects in the char layer formed by the gas-phase PN-DOPO flame retardant via its silica-cross-linked network. Moreover, the initial thermal decomposition temperature of WPU/9%PN-DOPO/5%PM@SiO 2 increased from 229.6°C to 260.1°C. Moreover, the tensile strength and storage modulus were considerably enhanced. This study presents a new research paradigm for developing environmentally friendly flame-retardant WPUs based on green and synergistic multimechanistic strategies.

Pseudocapacitive electrodes with high rate retention and good cycling stability are highly desirable in constructing high-performance supercapacitors due to their rapid charge/discharge capacity and long service life, but they are still a challenge to realize. Herein, a ternary Fe3O4/reduced graphene oxide/phytic acid (PA)-doped polyaniline (F-RGO-p-PANI) hybrid has been prepared to address this challenge. Prompted by the multiple synergistic effects among RGO, Fe3O4, PA, and PANI, our F-RGO-p-PANI material exhibits a high specific capacitance (Cs) of 459.1 F g−1 with a current density of 0.5 A g−1. Interestingly, our supercapacitor displays both high capacitance retention (∼83.5%) under a broad current density range (from 0.25 to 20 A g−1) and high cycling stability (∼80.8%) over 10 000 cycles under a high current density (20 A g−1), better than previous results. Moreover, our supercapacitor also shows a high specific energy density of 58.1 W h kg−1 with a power density of 0.5 kW kg−1. These results imply that our ternary F-RGO-p-PANI holds tremendous potential in fabricating rapidly charged/discharged supercapacitors.

Currently, interest in the development of a new sustainable sensors that does not cause pollution and exhibits rapid response for fire is increasing. Herein, a highly sensitive, flame-retardant, degradable film sensor (SCGP films) is developed by using a green and non-toxic scheme, which is comprising soybean protein isolate, chitosan, graphene, iron ions (Fe 3+ ), and phytic acid. The films exhibited reversible temperature response/recovery times (i.e., 2.6 s / 4.3 s) in wide range of 68.1–194.3 °C. The SCGP films showed a fast response time (3 s) to fire, and a continuous alarm during the long-term combustion (145 s). Moreover, the films can keep the structure intact after immersion in water for 30 days or under ultrasonic treatment. Therefore, the SCGP films can be assembled into a multifunctional sensor system which provides an eco-friendly scheme for multi-functional film sensor that can be applied in the fields of fire safety.

In recent years, the elimination of heavy metals from wastewater has become an important topic due to rapid industrialization, and it is of considerable interest to develop renewable and degradable materials for this purpose. In this work, a novel Prussian blue/polyaniline@cotton fibers (PB/PANI@CFs) composite was fabricated by a two-step process. Phytic acid doped PANI as a binding coating greatly promoted both the growth of PB and the adsorption of Cu2+. The deposition ratio of PB was as high as 24.68%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) displayed that PB nanoparticles were grown more uniformly in the composite and formed a perfect nanocube structure compared with PB@CFs. The successful deposition of both PB and PANI on CFs was demonstrated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FITR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effect of adsorption time, adsorbent dose, initial pH value, and initial copper sulphate concentration on the adsorption of PB/PANI@CFs composite for Cu2+was studied by static adsorption and was compared with those of PANI@CFs and PB@CFs. The results showed that the maximum removal efficiency of Cu2+by PB/PANI@CFs can reach 93.4% within 5 h, and the maximum adsorption capacity of Cu2+can reach 31.93 mg·g−1. The adsorption of Cu2+on PB/PANI@CFs followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model and conformed to the Freundlich adsorption isothermal model. The PB-functionalized CFs provided new insights into the design of efficient and low-cost absorbents for heavy metal remediation. The proposed process solves two problems simultaneously, i.e., the utilization of environmentally friendly and biodegradable biomass resources and the adsorption of heavy metal ions, and is a good approach to achieve high-quality and sustainable development. Keywords:cotton fibers;Prussian blue;polyaniline;phytic acid;binding coating;copper ion adsorption

3D Graphene (3D-GF) modified with different additive concentrations (phytic acid [PA] and ascorbic acid [AA]) is developed and then combined with different LiOH contents by the hydrothermal method to obtain composite materials. It can be found that the addition of PA and AA will not destroy the carbon skeleton structure of 3D-GF. With increasing additive content, the thermal conductivities of modified 3D-GF first increase and reach their maximum values at 8 mg mL −1 . The modified 3D-GF with the highest thermal conductivity is selected to be combined with different LiOH contents. The addition of PA and AA can broaden the charging temperature range from 60–110 to 30–200 °C and improve the LiOH hydration rate and heat storage density. Compared with the PA-modified composite, the AA-modified composite shows smaller (about 7.6 nm) and more uniform LiOH·H 2 O particles (the particles size standard deviation of 3D-GF-AA-LiOH·H 2 O is 1.1503), a larger specific surface area (119 m 2 g −1 ), higher heat storage density (the highest value of 2763 kJ kg −1 for LiOH⋅H2O, which can be about 4.2 times of pure LiOH), and less influenced by the change of LiOH content (the thermal conductivity standard deviation of 3D-GF-AA-LiOH·H 2 O is 0.123).

Phosphate species can complex with nuclides and heavy metals from aqueous solutions strongly. The introduction of phosphate groups onto the surface of biochar sorbents (mostly <1.0 at.% of P) is highly desired. In this study, phosphate modified hydrochars (HTBs) were prepared through the hydrothermal carbonization of bamboo sawdust with various duration (2, 12, 24 h) in the presence of phytic acid (0–70 wt%). The results showed that the addition of PA with a low concentration of 10 wt% carbonized at 2 h generated hydrogen protons to etch the pristine sawdust, inducing the granulation of surfaces and a 5.5-fold enhancement of surface area. While HTBs carbonized with increasing PA concentrations (30–70 wt%) and longer duration (12 and 24 h) presented more carbonaceous particles with rising sizes from <100 nm to 2.5 μm, which should be due to the cross-linkage of dehydrated phosphate-containing organic carbon components to the matrix, enabling the resultful surface modification (maximum of 2.1 wt% of P). The uptake of U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II) on HTBs was investigated given various geochemical conditions including contact time, pH, ionic strength , humic acid and temperature. HTBs could capture U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II) efficiently from the ideal and simulated wastewaters, and be reused well after six recycles. This work opened a new strategy for the potential of phosphate-hydrochars in the aqueous remediation.

A modified kaolinite by grafting with phytic acid (PA-g-Kaol) is fabricated, and it was introduced into ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) with intumescent flame retardancy (IFR) together to improve the flame retardancy of EVA composites. The results show the limiting oxygen index value of EVA/ (18.0 wt% IFR)/ (2.0 wt% PA-g-Kaol) is 30.8%. Meanwhile, there is only one dripping produced in the vertical burning test. What's more, the flame-retardant mechanism is demonstrated by TG-IR, real-time-IR and GC–MS analysis. The results indicate that some pyrolytic products of IFR and PA-g-Kaol, like ammonia and phosphoric acid, catalyze the crosslinking of EVA and flame retardant, the resultant compact char protects the substrate from further burning.
