To advance the sustainability of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), this study introduces γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a biodegradable and natural organic small molecule, as an economically viable electrolyte additive to overcome commercialization barriers such as dendrite proliferation and parasitic side reactions for achieving ultrastable zinc metal anodes. Theoretical and experimental results confirm that GABA undergoes preferential chemisorption on the zinc surface. This adsorbed film generates a water-deficient interfacial microenvironment that robustly suppresses detrimental side reactions. At the same time, the GABA adsorption layer guides the homogeneous electric-field. In addition, GABA molecules partially replace H2O molecules in the solvation shell of Zn2+. Remarkably, the GABA-based electrolyte enables Zn//Zn cells to have an outstanding cycling life of nearly 3000 h at 5 mA cm–2, surpassing the performance of the pure ZnSO4 electrolyte by a factor of 10. Moreover, in the Zn//Cu asymmetric cell, a highly reversible Zn plating/stripping process for over 13,000 cycles. Furthermore, the full-cell configurations exhibit outstanding electrochemical durability. The Zn//V2O5 cell maintains an impressive capacity retention of 83.5% over 2200 cycles, and the Zn//NVO cell demonstrates ultralong cyclability exceeding 10,000 cycles at 5 A g–1. This research highlights the potential of eco-friendly and cost-effective electrolyte additives in promoting the development of AZIBs.

The hydrodenitrogenation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles over noble metals has fundamental importance for energy and environmental science. To develop more efficient catalyst, mechanistic investigation has been conducted with a method combining in situ Fourier transformation infrared experiments and density functional theory calculations in this work. The in situ experiments indicate flatly adsorbed pyridine molecules convert to pyridinium and α -pyridyl species at higher temperature on metallic Pt of Pt/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalysts. Pyridine hydrogenation distinctly takes place at 150 °C with the appearance of methylene stretching vibrations, and a stepwise mechanism is identified as the temperature further increases. The adsorption, hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of pyridine on Pt are studied in detail by theoretical calculations. In line with these findings, the geometry optimization confirms pyridine preferentially adsorbs on Pt(111) and Pt(211) both in a parallel configuration. Based on the Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism, the results show successive hydrogenation markedly lowers the energy barrier for subsequent hydrogenolysis. The C N bond cleavage occurs via nucleophilic attack of pentahydropyridine, rather than piperidine, which determines the reaction products, including piperidine, n -pentylamine and n -pentane. The comparative study reveals both hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis are kinetically and thermodynamically more competitive on Pt(211) than Pt(111). Especially for hydrogenolysis, the coordinatively unsaturated Pt step atoms play an essential role in C N bond cleavage. Thus, hydrogenolysis is more geometric‒dependent than hydrogenation. This provides instructive information for the design of catalysts with adjustable product selectivity.

Homogeneous selective hydrogenation often relies on sophisticated yet fragile ligands to improve catalytic performance. This not only complicates the process but also increases costs, thereby severely impeding its industrial application. In this work, we report a novel ligand-free strategy for the homogeneous conversion of levulinic acid using Ru 3 (CO) 12 , which proceeds via a substrate-promoted pathway. Under mild reaction conditions, excellent turnover numbers (up to 99000) and turnover frequencies (up to 2750 h −1 ) were achieved for the production of γ-valerolactone. Mechanistic insights reveal that a levulinic acid-derived Ru 2 (CO) 4 sawhorse-type unit was formed in situ, and a catalytic cycle is proposed based on this key intermediate, outlining a new paradigm for practical and sustainable catalysis.

There is increasing interest in novel fertilizers to reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers in agriculture. Esters are promising stimulants. γ-Valerolactone, a volatile organic compound produced by Stutzerimonas stutzeri NRCB010, was suggested to promote tomato seedling growth under sterile conditions. We thus examined the effects of varying concentrations of γ-valerolactone on growth in hydroponic and greenhouse conditions, checked associated transcriptional changes, and measured the hormone contents. In this study, γ-valerolactone treatment significantly promote the tomato seedling growth, and the optimum concentration was 100 mg L − 1 and 250 mg L − 1 in hydroponic and greenhouse conditions, respectively. The content of IAA-aspartate, IAA-glutamate, indole-3-acetamide, indole-3-acetonitrile, indole-3-butyric acid, gibberellic acid 3 were all significantly increased in leaves, stem, and roots. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that when treated with γ-valerolactone for 6 h, there are more upregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) than downregulated DEGs, however, it’s opposite when treated with γ-valerolactone for 24 h. γ-Valerolactone may stimulate the growth of tomato seedlings through mechanisms such as photosynthesis, phytohormone signaling, and the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Our studies provide a theoretical basis for the application of γ -valerolactone as a new type of plant growth regulator and lay the foundation for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly agricultural biostimulants.

Conversion of ethyl levulinate to GVL was proposed using Pd 4 /UiO-66-NH 2 . • Pd 4 /UiO-66-NH 2 was constructed via a post-synthetic modification strategy. • Synergistic effects between Pd species and acidic sites drive superior performance. • GVL yield of 90% with 98.9% selectivity was achieved under 170 ℃ and 1.0 MPa H 2 . • The catalyst shows good recyclability, and can be reused for at least five runs. An efficient strategy is proposed for direct hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate (EL) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) using a highly dispersed palladium nanoparticles supported on the UiO-66-NH 2 framework (Pd/UiO-66-NH 2 ), which was prepared via a facile post-synthetic modification by anchoring palladium (Pd) nanoparticles on the framework's native -NH 2 groups. Under optimized conditions (170 °C, 1.0 MPa H 2 ), 90% yield and 98.9% selectivity of GVL were shown when the reaction was catalyzed by Pd 4 /UiO-66-NH 2 in cyclohexane. Catalyst characterization using XRD, N 2 adsorption-desorption, FT-IR, TEM, TGA, XPS and H 2 -TPR, confirmed that an intensive synergistic effect existed between the Pd and the acidic sites, which is responsible for the superior performance of Pd@UiO-66-NH 2 . The solvent effect and the feedstock adaptability were also investigated. Furthermore, the catalyst of Pd 4 /UiO-66-NH 2 demonstrated good stability and reusability, where no significant activity loss was shown even after five consecutive cycles. Therefore, this study provides new insights for efficient upgrading biochemical. Download: Download high-res image (188KB) Download: Download full-size image

Dye wastewater is characterized by its complex composition, high chromaticity, and significant toxicity, posing a major challenge in industrial wastewater treatment. Adsorption has emerged as an indispensable technology for dye removal due to its operational simplicity, environmental compatibility, and cost-effectiveness. In this work, a gel microsphere adsorbent (PS/P-γ-CD/Hec-XTAB) was prepared by incorporating sodium alginate with epichlorohydrin-crosslinked γ-cyclodextrin polymer and hectorite modified with cationic surfactants of varying chain lengths. The adsorbent was applied to remove typical cationic dyes─methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB)─from aqueous solution. The optimized material, PS/P-γ-CD/Hec-CTAB0.4, exhibited a high specific surface area (374.7008 m2/g) and showed maximum adsorption capacities of 139.1564 mg/g and 122.663 mg/g for methylene blue and rhodamine B respectively at pH 7 and 25 °C. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-first-order model, while equilibrium data were well described by the Langmuir isotherm. The process was found to be endothermic and spontaneous, mainly governed by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, host−guest encapsulation, and pore filling. Overall, this study presents an eco-friendly and economically viable adsorbent with promising potential for practical application in dye wastewater treatment.

In-situ generated hydroxides and oxyhydroxides have been gradually recognized as the real active sites of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nevertheless, the fine phase evolution process is still less of concern and elusive. Herein, we successfully construct serious of Ni-MOFs with differing thickness ranging from 1 nm to 270 nm through a competitive coordination strategy. Utilizing the operando resonance spectroscopy, an accurate phase inversion behavior of the Ni-MOFs has been witnessed during the OER, and demonstrated as a thickness-dependent process. Ultrathin architecture is identified as a positive factor to promote the exchange between MOFs ligands and applied electrolyte during the electrochemical test. Hence, after removing most of the internal ligands, 2D MOFs favor to be transformed as β-NiOOH, which is more active than the generated γ-NiOOH in bulky system. The density function theory (DFT) calculation alongside with the in-situ electrochemistry tests further affirm the β/γ-NiOOH transformation behavior. This work offers a new understanding of the electrocatalytic mechanism from the view point of phase evolution in 2D MOFs.

Magnetic γ′-Fe4N has been considered as one of the most promising non-noble materials for the electrocatalysis of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to its excellent magnetic properties, unique anti-perovskite-like structure, high chemical stability, and high intrinsic activity. Exploring environmentally friendly and efficient nitrogen sources instead of ammonia is still a huge challenge associated with obtaining pure γ′-Fe4N. In addition, it is widely acknowledged that the unique morphological and structural tuning of metal nitrides could effectively enhance their electrocatalytic capabilities. In this study, two kinds of magnetic γ′-Fe4N with different morphologies (cuboidal and rodlike) are obtained by combining facile solvent-regulated ferrous oxalate precursors with ethylenediamine-assisted thermal nitriding. The facile morphological tuning endows γ′-Fe4N with excellent soft magnetic properties while improving the activity toward OER. Specifically, the saturation magnetization of cuboidal γ′-Fe4N reaches up to 167.38 emu g–1. In addition, compared with the RuO2 benchmark for OER, cuboidal γ′-Fe4N shows more excellent OER electrocatalytic performance, showing an overpotential of 253 mV@10 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH and a low Tafel slope (45 mV dec–1). This is of great significance for the non-ammonia synthesis of iron nitride and the development of non-noble-metal-based OER electrocatalysts.

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been widely used in the food, feed, pharmaceutical, and chemical industry fields. Previously, we developed a whole-cell catalyst capable of converting L-glutamate (L-Glu) into GABA by overexpressing the glutamate decarboxylase gene ( gadz11 ) from Bacillus sp. Z11 in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). However, to enhance cell permeability , a freeze-thaw treatment is required, and to enhance GADZ11 activity, pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP) must be added to the reaction system. The aim of this study is to provide a more efficient approach for GABA production by engineering the recombinant E. coli above. First, the inducible expression conditions of the gadz11 in E. coli were optimized to 37 °C for 6 h. Next, an ideal engineered strain was produced via increasing cell permeability by overexpressing sulA and eliminating PLP dependence by constructing a self-sufficient system. Furthermore, an efficient whole-cell biocatalytic process was optimized. The optimal substrate concentration , cell density, and reaction temperature were 1.0 mol/L (the molecular ratio of L-Glu to L-monosodium glutamate (L-MSG) was 4:1), 15 and 37 °C, respectively. Finally, a whole-cell bioconversion procedure was performed in a 3-L bioreactor under optimal conditions. The strain could be reused for at least two cycles with GABA yield, productivity and conversion ratio of 206.2 g/L, 117.8 g/L/h and 100.0%, respectively. This is currently the highest GABA productivity from a mixture of L-Glu and L-MSG reported without the addition of cofactors or additional treatment of cells. This work demonstrates that the novel engineered E. coli strain has the potential for application in large-scale industrial GABA production.

In this study, the influences of nano γ-Al2O3 on the thermal storage performance of LiCl were experimentally investigated. The XRD results show that a complex of lithium aluminium oxychloride (LiAlOCl2) was formed through the LiCl·H2O and γ-Al2O3 composites preparation process. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy measurement reveals that the addition of γ-Al2O3 accelerated the hydration rate of LiCl composites, concentrated the spectrum utilization range, and promoted the desorption rate of physical adsorbed H2O and low-frequency structural –OH in the materials. The highest specific surface area of the composite is 34.5 times higher than that of pure LiCl. The addition of γ-Al2O3 can increase the conversion rate of LiCl·H2O to approximately 100% at the hydration time of 1 h and the addition content of γ-Al2O3 at 15 wt%. A maximum heat storage density (HSD) for the LiCl·H2O-γ-Al2O3 composite can reach 714.7 kJ kgLiCl·H2O−1 in 1 h when the addition content of γ-Al2O3 was 15%wt and its water uptake can reach 0.26 g g−1 in 1 h. It also can be found that the addition of Al2O3 in LiCl resulted in a decrease of the activation energy from 90.89 kJ mol−1 to 79.76 kJ mol−1. However, the thermal conductivity of the LiCl·H2O-γ-Al2O3 composite slightly decreased with the increase of nano γ-Al2O3 content.

Deoxygen is a crucial step for landfill gas (LFG) recycling and purification. Pt/γ-Al 2 O 3 is the most active catalyst for LFG deoxygen via catalytic methane oxidation . It is challenging but significant to further improve the performance of this type of catalyst. In regard of homogeneous and heterogeneous activation of methane by superacids , here we demonstrate LFG deoxygen via catalytic methane oxidation using a solid superacid catalyst, Pt/SO 4 2- /Al 2 O 3 , synthesized using pre-sulfated γ-Al 2 O 3 support by impregnated with sulfuric acid . In comparison to Pt/γ-Al 2 O 3 , Pt/SO 4 2- /Al 2 O 3 catalysts exhibit exceptionally improved activity and minimum complete O 2 conversion at a temperature of 264 ℃, a decrease of about 51 ℃. This value is superior to the state-of-the-art Pt-based deoxygen catalysts. Characterizations and theoretical calculations indicate that sulfation enhances the amount of acid sites on γ-Al 2 O 3 support and induces electron deficiency of the supported Pt species (+0.28|e|), thus boosting the low-temperature activity. Furthermore, the Pt/SO 4 2- /Al 2 O 3 catalyst maintained its initial activity after six runs without any detectable coke deposition. This discovery offers simple and effective strategies to precisely design higher performance application-oriented Pt based deoxygen catalysts.

It has been a challenge to synthesize macrolide musk in excellent yields with high purity. KF-La/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared from a highly basic mesoporous framework using a mild method. The prepared KF-La/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was employed for the synthesis of cyclopentadecanolide from methyl 15-hydroxypentadecanoate. The morphology and structure of prepared catalysts were characterized using XRD, TG-DTG, SEM, EDX, TEM, BET and CO2-TPD. The results revealed that the K3AlF6 and LaOF are produced on the surface of KF-La/γ-Al2O3, and LaO can promote the dispersion of KF on the surface of Al2O3. Catalysts pore size main distribution ranges between 10 and 30 nm, the maximum CO2 desorption temperature is 715°C when the La loading is 25%. Because F− ion has a higher electronegativity than O2− ion, the KF-promoted metal oxide (Al2O3 or/and La2O3) contained more strong basic sites, compared with that of the corresponding metal oxide. The yield of cyclopentadecanolide obtained at 0.5 g KF-25La/γ-Al2O3 catalyst and a reaction temperature of 190°C for 7 h were 58.50%, and the content after reactive distillation is 98.8%. The KF-La/γ-Al2O3 catalyst has a larger pore size and basic strength, which is more conducive to the macrolactonization of long-chain hydroxy ester.
