Highly dispersed Pd/PdO/Fe2O3 nanoparticles in SBA-15 for Fenton-like processes: confinement and synergistic effects

Xingfa Li,Xin Liu,Lili Xu,Yuezhong Wen,Jianqing Ma,Zucheng Wu

Heterogeneous Pd catalytic Fenton-like systems with in-situ-generated H 2 O 2 have recently gained significant attention for wastewater treatment. Intense research efforts have been focused on developing highly efficient Fenton-like catalysts. It is known that nanoparticle size and appropriate coordination of active compositions are important for the fabrication of a highly efficient multicomponent catalyst. Unfortunately, effects of these factors on Fenton-like reaction are still unknown. To decipher the puzzle, we designed multicomponent Pd/PdO/Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles in SBA-15 (denoted as FePd-SBA) as a Fenton-like catalyst which possesses uniform and highly dispersed nanoparticles (small size about 5   nm) in space-confined channels of SBA-15. The fabricated catalyst shows high catalytic activities in Fenton-like reaction for dye degradation. For example, 98.6% removal of dye Acid Red 73 was obtained under in-situ generation of hydrogen peroxide. In contrast, when the catalyst loaded on SiO 2 without channels or pores (FePd–SiO 2 ) was prepared, and compared with FePd–SBA, FePd–SiO 2 showed noticeably poor performance (51.6%) under same conditions. Obviously, such a difference in results is due to the confinement effect of SBA-15 porous channels. It was also found that Fe and Pd played important roles in the synergistic effect, that is, Pd worked in in-situ H 2 O 2 generation and Fe species worked in decompose H 2 O 2 to degrade organic pollutants. When we applied this catalyst for Fenton-like reaction with addition of H 2 O 2 , it was also found that Pd and PdO played important roles and the synergistic effect between Fe and Pd species actually existed in dye removal. The unique nanostructure makes the catalyst to be a novel and welcoming choice for H 2 O 2 favorite reactions.

The generation of hydroxyl radicals by hydrogen peroxide decomposition on FeOCl/SBA-15 catalysts for phenol degradation

Xue-jing Yang,Peng-fei Tian,Xiao-man Zhang,Xin Yu,Ting Wu,Jing Xu,Yi-fan Han

Iron oxychloride (FeOCl) supported on mesoporous silica (SBA-15), as a Fenton-like solid catalyst for phenol degradation, showed supreme activity for production of hydroxyl radical (HO·) by H 2 O 2 decomposition, and the generation capacity was comparable to the conventional Fenton reagent (Fe 2+ +H 2 O 2 ). The structure of FeOCl was characterized with spectroscopies. The generation of HO· species during the reaction was detected using 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide trapped electron paramagnetic resonance. Furthermore, the kinetics in detail was driven for the creation and diffusion of HO· by H 2 O 2 decomposition over FeOCl, which follows a first-order rate through a two-step reaction. With the combination of the catalyst structure and kinetic parameters, the plausible mechanism for H 2 O 2 decomposition during the oxidative degradation of phenol was rationalized. As a Fenton-like solid catalyst, FeOCl/SBA-15 is a promising alternative for the removal of low-level organic contaminates from water. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 61: 166–176, 2015

Synergistic effect of Mo2N and Pt for promoted selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde over Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15

Dong Wang,Yujun Zhu,Chungui Tian,Lei Wang,Wei Zhou,Yongli Dong,Qing Han,Yunfei Liu,Fulong Yuan,Honggang Fu

The introduction of a suitable co-catalyst is a promising way to improve the catalytic efficiency of Pt catalysts. Herein, SBA-15 modified with well-dispersed Mo2N nanoparticles (NPs) is synthesized by anchoring phosphomolybdic acid (HPM) on aminated SBA-15 (SBA-15-NH2) primarily, followed by nitridation treatment under NH3. After loading of Pt, the Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 catalyst with close-contact Pt and Mo2N NPs can be formed. The intensive interaction of Pt and Mo2N benefited from the close contact is verified by XRD and XPS tests. As a result, the ternary Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 catalysts have shown superior performance to Pt/SBA-15 catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl alcohol. The TOF over the 1 wt% Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 catalyst is close to that over the 3 wt% Pt/SBA-15 catalyst, but its selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) is 2.5 times that of 3 wt% Pt/SBA-15. The promoted activity of Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of Pt and Mo2N NPs, which can cause the full development of the catalytic ability of Pt, thus reducing the Pt usage, through increasing the dispersion of Pt NPs and the fraction of Pt0 species in the catalyst.

Mesoporous SBA-15 end-capped by PEG via l-cystine based linker for redox responsive controlled release

Liang Chen,Zhen Zheng,Jing Wang,Xinling Wang

A unique redox responsive system for glutathione (GSH) triggered controlled release was prepared by modifying the mesoporous SBA-15 with l -cystine ester linked mPEG chains, in which the former was served as the nanoreservoir of guest molecules and the latter was applied as gatekeepers to block the mesopores. The disulfide bond in l -cystine ester can be effectively cleaved by redox reaction under glutathione of cancer cell level, and then resulting in the release of guests encapsulated in the pores. Fluorescein dye as the model drug was loaded into the mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and released in PBS with 10   mM GSH and without GSH respectively to test the controlled release properties of the MSNs using UV–Vis spectra as the detector. The results showed that fluorescein dye in PBS with 10   mM GSH was released much more rapidly. Compared with such a controlled release system based on MCM-41, the SBA-15 based system showed a distinctive release behavior. The MSNs synthesized from SBA-15 can be used as an effective drug controlled release system for biomedical applications, especially for long-term drug delivery.

Preparation of ion-imprinted mesoporous silica SBA-15 functionalized with triglycine for selective adsorption of Co(II)

Wenlu Guo,Rui Chen,Yan Liu,Minjia Meng,Xiangguo Meng,Zhaoyong Hu,Zhilong Song

A novel Co(II)-imprinted polymer (Co(II)-IIP) aimed at the selective adsorption and separation of Co(II) was prepared by modifying the surface of ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15 with triglycine (Gly–Gly–Gly) in the presence of Co(II). The prepared polymer was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TEM and N 2 adsorption–desorption techniques. The results showed that the synthesized polymer maintained high ordered mesoporous structure. The factors affecting the separation and preconcentration of the target Co(II), including solution pH, temperature, time for adsorption equilibrium, and conditions of elution were investigated in detail. The kinetics adsorption and adsorption capacity of Co(II)-IIP were estimated using batch mode experiments. The mechanism for static adsorption of Co(II) onto Co(II)-IIP was found to follow pseudo-second-order and Freundlich isotherm model. Compared with the non-imprinted polymer (NIP), the Co(II)-IIP exhibited faster adsorption rate and higher adsorption capacity. The adsorption equilibrium for Co(II)-IIP could be reached in 50   min, and the maximum static adsorption capacity obtained at 25   °C was 181.67   mg   g −1 . Furthermore, the Co(II)-IIP showed excellent recognition and binding affinity toward the target cobalt ions, and the relative selectivity coefficient ( k ′) values of Co(II)/Fe(II), Co(II)/Cu(II), Co(II)/Zn(II) and Co(II)/Ni(II) were 19.64, 18.29, 22.03 and 27.43, respectively. Desorption and regeneration studies suggested that the prepared Co(II)-IIP could be reused five times without an obvious decrease in adsorption capacity. The results showed that this novel adsorbent could be employed as an effective material for the selective removal of Co(II) from aqueous solutions.

Experimental and computational studies of cationic Gemini surfactants as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in 15% HCl

Chenxu Wang,Erlong Yang

In the process of oil and gas exploration, the corrosion of carbon steel pipes results in substantial economic losses, numerous casualties, environmental contamination, and resource waste. The advancement of highly efficient and stable corrosion inhibitors holds significant importance for protecting carbon steel from corrosion during oil and gas exploitation. In this study, two new cationic Gemini surfactants (2CncoesT, where n = 12, 14) were synthesized through a straightforward two-step reaction. Weight-loss tests demonstrated that the inhibition efficiency (ηw%) increases with the increase in temperature. Specifically, the maximum ηw% values for 2C12coesT and 2C14coesT were 98.0% and 98.3% respectively at 85 °C. The adsorption of these surfactants conformed to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Electrochemical measurements suggested that the two surfactants functioned as mixed-type inhibitors. The findings obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were consistent with the experimental outcomes that 2C12coesT and 2C14coesT are efficient corrosion inhibitors for the metal in an acidic environment. The quantum chemical investigation and molecular dynamics simulation (MD) further substantiated the experimental results and offered insights for a deeper comprehension of the inhibition mechanism of Gemini surfactants.

Adipose Tissue-Resident Sphingomonas Paucimobilis Suppresses Adaptive Thermogenesis by Reducing 15-HETE Production and Inhibiting AMPK Pathway

Yucheng Zhu,Ruiqi Yang,Zhangchao Deng,Bohua Deng,Kun Zhao,Chen Dai,Gang Wei,YanJiang Wang,Jinshui Zheng,Zhuqing Ren,Wentao Lv,Yingping Xiao,Zhinan Mei,Tongxing Song

Obesity represents a low-grade chronic inflammation status, which is associated with compromised adaptive thermogenesis. However, the mechanisms underlying the defective activation of thermogenesis in chronic inflammation remain unclear. Here, a chronic inflammatory model is first estabolished by injecting mice with low-dose lipopolysaccharide (LPS) before cold exposure, and then it is verified that LPS treatment can decrease the core body temperature of mice and alter the microbial distribution in epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT). An adipose tissue-resident bacterium Sphingomonas paucimobilis is identified as a potential inhibitor on the activation of brown fat and browning of inguinal WAT, resulting in defective adaptive thermogenesis. Mechanically, LPS and S. paucimobilis inhibit the production and release of 15-HETE by suppressing its main metabolic enzyme 12 lipoxygenase (12-LOX) and 15- Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) rescues the impaired thermogenesis. Interestingly, 15-HETE directly binds to AMP-activated protein kinase α (AMPKα) and elevates the phosphorylation of AMPK, leading to the activation of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complexes. Further analysis with human obesity subjects reveals that individuals with high body mass index displayed lower 15-HETE levels. Taken together, this work improves the understanding of how chronic inflammation impairs adaptive thermogenesis and provides novel targets for alleviating obesity.

Selective dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural catalyzed by mesoporous SBA-15-SO3H in ionic liquid BmimCl

Xingcui Guo,Quan Cao,Yijun Jiang,Jing Guan,Xiaoyan Wang,Xindong Mu

Mesoporous SBA-15 materials functionalized with propylsulfonic acid groups (SBA-15-SO 3 H) were synthesized through a conventional one-pot route. It was used as a catalyst for the selective synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from the dehydration of fructose using BmimCl as solvent. Reaction time, temperature and fructose concentration were investigated during the HMF synthesis procedure. The catalyst SBA-15-SO 3 H exhibits high fructose conversion (near 100%) and HMF selectivity (about 81%) with good stability in the HMF synthesis. It was a suitable catalyst to produce HMF from renewable carbohydrates in potential industrial process.

Hf-SBA-15 supported heteropolyacid: An efficient catalyst for one-pot production of γ-valerolactone from furfural

Zonghui Liu,Xueting Zhu,Chao Cai,Jiayi Zheng,Bing Yan,Liangmin Ning,Dan Yang,Bing Xue

Developing conversion routes from lignocellulosic platform compounds to high-value chemicals is fundamental to advancing sustainable resource utilization in the bioeconomy. In this study, we designed a series of SBA-15-supported bifunctional catalysts with precisely tunable Lewis acid sites (LAS), Brønsted acid sites (BAS), and basic sites through strategic incorporation of hafnium species and heteropolyacids (HPAs), demonstrating their exceptional performance in the multi-step tandem conversion of furfural (FUR) to γ-valerolactone (GVL). HfO 2 was used LAS and basic sites to catalyze the transfer hydrogenation reaction of FUR and levulinate ester using 2-propanol as the H-donor. Complementary to this, HPA could catalyze the hydrolytic ring-opening of furans. The amount of LAS, BAS, and basic sites was adjusted by changing the ratio of HPA to HfO 2 and the types of HPA (phosphotungstic acid (HPW), phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo), silicotungstic acid (HSiW) and silicomolybdic acid (HSiMo)). The ratio of HPA to HfO 2 and types of HPA have a great influence on the catalytic performance, among which HPW/Hf-SBA-15_0.37 (W/Hf = 0.37) was identified as the best catalyst and presented the highest GVL selectivity (73.5 %) under optimized reaction conditions. The poison experiment (addition of benzoic acid, pyridine, or 2,6-lutidine to the reaction) indicated that both acidic and basic sites play important role in the FUR to GVL reaction. Moreover, by correlating the catalyst performance with the BAS/LAS ratio of catalysts, it can be found that the balance between the BAS and LAS is also the key to higher GVL selectivity.

Synergistic Atomic-Scale Design Realizes Enhanced Optical and Infrared Radiative Properties in ZrO2/SBA-15 Porous Composites

Xinyu Wang,Yuzhi Zhang,Maofei Zhang,Rui Sun,Binghao Wang,Jiayu Ma,Hongyu Gu,Lingnan Wu,Lixin Song

The development of materials with both high solar reflectance and strong mid-infrared emissivity remains a major challenge. In this work, we report a ZrO 2 /SBA-15 hierarchical porous composite synthesized through a one-pot copolymerization strategy. By introducing Zr atoms into the SBA-15 framework and validating the mechanism using first-principles calculations, we achieve synergistic optimization of optical and structural properties. The incorporation of Zr suppresses defect states near the Fermi level, leading to a widened bandgap and enhanced reflectance in the UV–Vis region. The optimized 1.0ZrO 2 /SBA-15 composite exhibits an average solar reflectance of 96.8% across the 0.3–2.5 μm wavelength range and an emissivity of 0.986 in the 8–13 μm range. This study demonstrates an atomic-scale structural design strategy that combines experimental synthesis with electronic structure calculations, offering new insights into the rational development of inorganic porous composites with enhanced optical performance.

Catalytic synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from glucose-based carbohydrates via assembled bifunctional SBA-15 mesoporous silica catalysts

Liu Wanni,Shi Xian,Liu Dongqi,Xing Xinyi,Ruan Mengya,Sun Song,Lyu Gaojin,Xu Siquan

Converting glucose-based carbohydrates such as microcrystalline cellulose and cellulose components in lignocellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a feasible way to achieve high-value utilization of biomass. To this end, this work assembled a series of bifunctional (x)Hf/SBA-15-S catalysts by introducing active hafnium species and grafting sulfonic acid groups onto the mesoporous SBA-15 silica carrier to drive the conversion of glucose, cellulose and untreated wheat straw into HMF. Through detailed parameter evaluation, competitive HMF yields were achieved from glucose (74%) and cellulose (51%), respectively. More importantly, the cellulose and hemicellulose components in untreated wheat straw could be efficiently converted simultaneously to obtain HMF and furfural with yields of 50 and 30%, respectively. Systematic characterization revealed that (x)Hf/SBA-15-S catalysts had an ordered pore channel, bifunctional acidity and good hydrothermal stability, which were beneficial to the process of cellulose undergoing depolymerization, isomerization and dehydration to produce HMF. Therefore, it is believed that the catalytic transformation strategy presented in this study has application prospects for realizing the utilization of glucose-based carbohydrates.

The effect of the distance between acidic site and basic site immobilized on mesoporous solid on the activity in catalyzing aldol condensation

Xiaofang Yu,Xiaobo Yu,Shujie Wu,Bo Liu,Heng Liu,Jingqi Guan,Qiubin Kan

Acid–base bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts containing carboxylic and amine groups, which were immobilized at defined distance from one another on the mesoporous solid were synthesized by immobilizing lysine onto carboxyl-SBA-15. The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron micrographs (SEM), transmission electron micrographs (TEM), elemental analysis , and back titration . Proximal-C-A-SBA-15 with a proximal acid–base distance was more active than maximum-C-A-SBA-15 with a maximum acid–base distance in aldol condensation reaction between acetone and various aldehydes. It appears that the distance between acidic site and basic site immobilized on mesoporous solid should be an essential factor for catalysis optimization.
