Fluorescent material-based lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (LFIA) has been widespread applied for the point-of-care test of mycotoxins. However, aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) phenomenon of fluorescent labels seriously affects the detection performance of the methods. Herein, a red-emitted aggregation-induced emission fluorescent microspheres (AIEFMs) based LFIA was developed and firstly applied for the visual and quantitative detection of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in milk. The fluorescent probe was constructed by directly coupling the carboxylated AIEPMs with anti -AFM1-mAb, which demonstrated a strong AFM1-specific affinity and exceptional fluorescent characteristics. Under the optimal conditions, this AIEFMs-LFIA could achieve a rapid detection of AFM1 within 15 min, with a visual limit of detection (vLOD) of 0.1 ng/mL and a quantitative limit of detection (qLOD) of 0.01 ng/mL. The accuracy and precision of the established AIEFMs-LFIA method were assessed though the spiked milk samples, and the recoveries were in the range of 86.81%-106.37% with coefficients of variation below 15%. Furthermore, the test strip exhibited a wide detection range for AFM1 (0.01-1 ng/mL) and a remarkable stability for 180 days when stored at 4 °C and 25 °C. Importantly, the results for the spiked milk samples were consistent with those of standard UPLC-MS/MS method, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9911. Overall, the newly developed AIEFMs-LFIA demonstrates significant potential for the point-of-care test of AFM1 in milk.

Control of stereochemistry plays a key role in medicinal chemistry, material and life science. As a prominent AIE luminogen, tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives have E/Z isomers which are challenging to separate even by HPLC. Herein, we designed oxetane-substituted TPE (TPE-2OXE) and separated pure isomers by simple column chromatography with high yields, as confirmed by mass spectrometry, IR and NMR spectroscopy. The isomerization of the two isomers can occur by photo- and thermo-activation. Importantly, (Z)-TPE-2OXE isomer solid shows bathochromic emission with a quantum yield 5 times higher than that of (E)-TPE-2OXE. The differences in emission wavelength and quantum yield are derived from distinct emission mechanisms of locally excited (LE) state emission of (E)-TPE-2OXE and charge transfer (CT) state emission of (Z)-TPE-2OXE. The two isomers are also good piezochromic luminescent materials, which have not only an obvious emission color shift but also significantly enhanced luminescence brightness by external force. In addition, (E)-TPE-2OXE solids show self-healing ability, which can crystallize spontaneously from ground amorphous state. The higher brightness of (E)-TPE-2OXE can be retained in solution, so fluorescent AIE nanodots are prepared from the two isomers. Cell-labeling experiments also show that (Z)-TPE-2OXE AIE dots have higher labeling brightness as compared to the (E)-TPE-2OXE isomer. The synthesis and distinct properties of E/Z isomers are beneficial to further development of new TPE derivatives for various applications.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising cancer treatment method. Traditional small-molecule photosensitizers (PSs) suffer from low intersystem crossing (ISC) ability and aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), which adversely affects the luminous efficiency and singlet oxygen (1O2) yield of PSs in the aggregated state. Ir(III) complexes are promising PSs with long excited-state lifetime, good photophysical and photochemical properties and large Stokes shifts. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics could reduce the nonradiative recombination and improve the ISC ability of excited states through the restriction of the intramolecular motions in aggregated states. Accordingly, two AIE-active Ir(III) complexes Ir-1-N+ and Ir-2-N+ were successfully designed and obtained based on Schiff base ligands. Experimental results showed that Ir-1-N+ and Ir-2-N+ have good photophysical properties and the corresponding nanoparticles (NPs) have good water solubility and 1O2 generation ability. Notably, Ir-2-N+ NPs can be efficiently taken up by mouse breast cancer cells (4T1 cells) with good biocompatibility, low dark toxicity and excellent phototoxicity. This work demonstrates a versatile strategy for exploiting efficient transition metal PSs with a cationic ligand in PDT.

Transcatheter arterial embolization has been used clinically for the treatment of intermediate to advanced unresectable tumors, which is a complex procedure and may pose other risks. In order to achieve an efficient and simple therapeutic diagnostic method for tumors, this paper is based on the fact that the fluorescence properties of AIE fluorescent molecules are similar to those of pH-responsive polyamino acid materials undergoing a “sol–gel” phase transition in a tumor micro-acid environment, and two polyamino acid materials, PGTTC and PGCLTGCL, were linked with TPA derivatives of AIE fluorescent molecules to obtain catheter-free embolic agents, PGTTC-DCDPP-2TPA and PGCLTGCL-DCDPP-2TPA. In tumor fluorescence imaging experiments in tumor-bearing mice, both were enriched at the tumor 72 h after injection and that of the PGCLTGCL-DCDPP-2TPA was stronger, moreover, the tumor cells were suppressed and necrotic after 25 days. Therefore, this pH-responsive noninterventional embolization combination therapeutic diagnostic system has good prospects for application in the field of combined therapeutic diagnostic multifunctional platforms.

Excessive boric acid could cause severe damage to plants and humans. Hence, it is of great importance to detect its presence in water. However, traditional analytical methods often have to use either toxic reagents or expensive instruments, which urges the development of a facile detection strategy. Herein, we have designed a tetraphenylethylene-cored glucose-containing glycopolymer with an aggregation-induced emission effect to detect the concentration of boric acid in water efficiently. Copper-mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerization (Cu(0)-RDRP) was utilized to polymerize glucose-containing monomer directly in N, N -dimethylbenzamide (DMF), yielding a star-shaped glycopolymer with a tetraphenylethylene core. This glycopolymer emitted fluorescence through B(OH) 4 − induced aggregation under alkaline conditions, which can serve as a sensitive fluorescence probe for detecting boric acid while being specific to the acid and not affected by other metal ions.

The aggregation-caused quenching has always limited the high concentration and solid-state applications of carbon nanodots. While the aggregation-induced emission effect, dominated by intramolecular motion, may be an effective means to solve this problem. Here, hydrophobic solid-state red-light carbon nanodots (M-CDs) with 95% yield are synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method using 2,2'-dithiodibenzoic acid as the carbon source and manganese acetate as the dopant source. The disulfide bond of 2,2'-dithiodibenzoic acid serves as the symmetry center of molecular rotation and Mn catalyzes the synthesis of M-CDs, which promotes the formation of the central graphitic carbon structure. The M-CDs/agar hydrogel composites can achieve fluorescence transition behavior because of the special fluorescence transition properties of M-CDs. When this composite hydrogel is placed in water, water molecules contact with M-CDs through the network structure of the hydrogels, making the aggregated hydrogels of M-CDs fluorescence orange-red under 365 nm excitation. While in dimethyl sulfoxide, water molecules in the hydrogels network are replaced and the M-CDs fluoresce blue when dispersed, providing a potential application in information encryption. In addition, high-performance monochromatic light-emitting diode (LED) devices are prepared by compounding M-CDs with epoxy resin and coating them on 365 nm LED chips.

Three diblock copolymers ( PTPEE-PNns ) with controllable polymer structures were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, combining 1-ethenyl-4-(1,2,2-triphenylethenyl)-benzene (TPEE) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM). All PTPEE-PNns copolymers showed remarkable aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic. Due to the amphiphilic structure of the copolymers, PTPEE-PNn micelles (mainly hollow) were prepared with either “precipitation” or “dialysis” method, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , dynamic light scattering and fluorescence methodology were performed to investigate the morphology, size distribution and stability of the micelles, revealing the effects of molecular weight and micelle preparation method on the nanostructure of the micelles. The PTPEE-PN2 hollow micelles prepared by the “dialysis” method had the advantages of small particle size, extremely narrow particle size distribution , remarkable thermal sensitivity, excellent particle stability, and showed good biocompatibility and fluorescence emission capability in cell imaging . This work would inspire more approaches to prepare novel AIE-active, thermoresponsive and biocompatible polymers for biomedical application .

“Turn-on” fluorescent materials in the absence of metal and organic solvent are highly desirable as bioprobes to selectively and sensitively detect pyrophosphate (PPi) anion. In this work, we embedded tetraphenylethene (TPE) inside the relatively rigid hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (HPA) to afford highly water soluble TPE-HPA materials, where the TPE fluorescence was pre-quenched in water by the hyperbranched structure of HPA without participation of any metal or organic solvents. The obtained TPE-HPA could be directly used as fluorescence “turn-on” bioprobe under physiological conditions to selectively detect PPi. There was a good linearity between the photoluminescence enhancement and the PPi concentration in the range of 0–1.0 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 6.5 nM. Compared with the other reported AIE probes for PPi detection, TPE-HPA with the optimal TPE content showed the best comprehensive performance, that is metal-free, organic-solvent free and nanomolar level LOD. The extreme selectivity and sensitivity towards PPi allowed TPE-HPA to accurately detect the PPi concentration in human urine.

Hypochlorite (ClO − ) is a highly reactive oxygen species that plays an important role in resistance to attacks by microorganisms. Herein, we report the preparation of a fluorescence probe (NIB-M) through the integration of a naphthalimide moiety and ClO − to capture diaminomaleonitrile and employ it for the aggregation-induced emission-based (AIE-based) monitoring of ClO − . In the presence of ClO − , NIB-M undergoes sequential nucleophilic substitution and HCl elimination reactions that allow it to possess high selectivity, a fast response, and a low detection limit (0.032 μM). Due to the good AIE properties of the parent molecule, a ClO − test board was facilely prepared by loading NIB-M on a Whatman paper strip-based portable device. The test plate can conveniently and sensitively detect hypochlorite onsite. In addition, the NIB-M probe was used for the imaging of exogenous/endogenous ClO − inside living cells.

Photoswitchable fluorescent polymer nanoparticles (PFPNs) were constructed from an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) based fluorogen and a photochromic spiropyran-linked amphiphilic copolymer via a simple co-precipitation method. Possessing the reversible photoisomerization property and high fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency, not only did the designed spiropyran-linked amphiphilic copolymer provide the PFPNs with excellent long-term stability (∼5 weeks) in aqueous media, but also it could both efficiently and reversibly switch on/off the fluorescence emission of the AIE-based fluorogen upon irradiation with UV and visible light. It is worth noting that the high contrast dual-color characteristics written with PFPNs as rewritable fluorescence patterning can be tuned by altering the wavelength of the irradiation light. Moreover, the resultant PFPNs were successfully applied for intracellular dual-color imaging due to their outstanding cell-membrane permeability and rapid photo-responsiveness, as well as excellent repeatability properties.

Regarding the high incidence of residue and serious toxicity of acetochlor (ATC) pesticide, it is urgent to explore simple and low-cost methods for their sensitive detection in food. In this study, with zeolite-like imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) as the carriers for embedding glutathione-modified luminescent gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) exhibiting aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect, a GSH-AuNCs@ZIF-8 probe driven strip-based lateral flow immunosensor (LFIS) was developed for visual qualitative and fluorescent quantitative dual-modal detection of ATC. The encapsulation of GSH-AuNCs into ZIF-8 with restriction effect not only significantly improved the stability and anti-interference ability of AuNCs, but also remarkably enhanced the fluorescence efficiency for signal amplification due to the enhanced AIE effect of GSH-AuNCs, endowing the LFIS platform with unique performance. Under optimal conditions, the LFIS platform could realize the point-of-care visualization and quantitation of ATC within 20 min with a detection limit of 8.3 pg/mL and a broad linear range of 0.01–10.0 ng/mL. High recoveries of 96.44%–106.8 % in the spiked ginger samples confirmed the outstanding accuracy and dependability of the new platform for ATC analysis of real samples. Compared with other immunoassays, the AuNCs@ZIF-8-based dual-modal LFIS exhibited the advantages of simple preparation, simple operation, short analytical time, and low cost, which could be expanded to monitor more pesticides and more trace contaminants in diverse food and agricultural products, and medicinal material matrices.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials have been used for non-destructive visual detection of cracks and damages to prevent the final structural failure and increase the service life of coatings. In this study, a self-warning and self-healing core–shell fiber is synthesized for developing AIE composite coatings. In these core–shell fibers, a mixture of hmethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and tetraphenylethylene (TPE) is used as core constituent, and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is used for preparing the shell, which are continuously wrapped with a high loading rate through coaxial electrospinning technology. The parameters of electrospinning process are optimized to achieve core–shell fibers with smooth surface and average diameter of 100 ± 50 nm. The composite coating reveals effective fluorescence in case of cracks in a corrosive environment. The maximum self-healing efficiency of the fiber coating is 94.8 % after soaking for 120 h. The introduced composite coating paves the way for improving the safety and reliability of critical engineering components.
