Based on the enhanced charge separation efficiency of the one-dimensional structure and strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of gold, a gold modified TiO2nanotube (Au/TiO2NTs) glucose photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was prepared. It could be activated by visible red light (625 nm). Under optimal conditions, the Au/TiO2NTs sensor exhibited a good sensitivity of 170.37 μA·mM−1·cm−2in the range of 1–90 μM (R2= 0.9993), and a detection limit of 1.3 μM (S/N = 3). Due to its high selectivity, good anti-interference ability, and long-term stability, the fabricated Au/TiO2NTs sensor provides practical detection of glucose. It is expected to be used in the construction of non-invasive PEC biosensors. Keywords:Au nanoparticles;TiO2nanotubes;SPR effect;glucose PEC sensor;visible red light

Self-powered photodetectors are great potential candidates in the next generation of low energy-consumption photoelectric devices. However, the planar-type metal–semiconductor–metal (MSM) self-powered photodetectors (PDs) of perovskites still suffer from poor photodetection performance. Herein, by taking advantage of the spontaneous polarization property of the CH3NH3PbI3 single crystal, which can generate an extra polarization electric field, planar-type self-powered Au/CH3NH3PbI3/Cu PDs with preferable photodetection capability is reported. The resultant PDs exhibit the maximum responsivity of 0.288 A W−1 in 400–840 nm under the superposed built-in electric field by spontaneous polarization and asymmetric Schottky junction. Furthermore, the maximum detectivity is 4.69 × 1012 Jones, which is the highest record among the planar-type MSM self-powered PDs based on a perovskite. Moreover, the PDs exhibited excellent operation stability with the photocurrent of the unencapsulated photodetector remaining at 92% after 15 days in atmospheric condition.

The design of Au-based materials with good dispersion and more active sites is critical to enhance the catalytic performance of electrochemical ammonia production. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) heterojunction Au-Bi2Te3 nanosheets (Au-Bi2Te3 NSs) are prepared by Au nanoparticles growing on Bi2Te3 nanosheets. Benefiting from the good dispersion of Au nanoparticles and the synergistic effect of the heterojunction composite, Au-Bi2Te3 NSs demonstrate excellent behavior for an ambient nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). In a 0.1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte (N2-saturated), Au-Bi2Te3 NSs display a high NH3 yield rate of 32.73 μg h–1 mgcat.–1 and a faradic efficiency of 20.39% at −0.4 V. The proposed synthetic method provides a feasible strategy for designing high-performance heterojunction electrocatalysts for electrochemical ammonia synthesis.

In order to modulate the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and make them applicable to ultrafast nonlinear optical devices, we fabricated a core satellite ZnS-Au nanostructure on the surface of MWCNTs via the solvothermal method. The structure and morphology of the MWCNTs-Au-ZnS product were characterized by means of the XRD, SEM and XPS, which showed that the ZnS-Au nanoassemblies were combined along with the MWCNTs through C S covalent bond and partial ionic bond. The optical nonlinearities of the MWCNTs-Au-ZnS system were investigated using the Z-scan technique under the excitation of 532 nm ps laser pulses and kinetically analyzed using the pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that the saturation absorption (SA) coefficient and the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of the MWCNTs-Au-ZnS system were adjustable with the variation of the core-satellite structure. The intensity of the saturation absorption was tuned downward below that of the pure MWCNTs, while the susceptibility of the system was tuned upward above that of the pure MWCNTs, which were attributed to the combined action of two-photon absorption of ZnS, charge transfer in the system, trap states provided by Au and charge delocalization varying with the size. These tunable nonlinearities will expand the applications of the MWCNTs-Au-ZnS system in photonic devices.

Well-dispersed Au–Pt alloyed bimetallic nanoparticles are synthesized using chlorogenic acid as the only reducing agent and stabilizer to reduce Au/Pt precursors successively has been presented here. The shapes of Au–Pt bimetallic nanoparticles are controlled by changing the sequence of successive reduction: the spherical shape in the sequence of Pt precursor reduced prior to Au precursor, and the flower shape by reversing the sequence. The sizes of Au–Pt bimetallic nanoparticles can be tuned by changing the molar ratios of the precursors to chlorogenic acid, and the average size of Au–Pt bimetallic nanoparticles decreased or increased with an increase in chlorogenic acid concentration in different sequence of successive reduction. Additionally, the high antioxidant activity of Au–Pt bimetallic nanoparticles was verified by in vitro radical scavenging assays. Our results show that chlorogenic acid is an excellent reducing and capping agent for the controlled synthesis and stabilization of Au–Pt bimetallic nanoparticles, which could be extended to reduce other metal precursors for synthesizing bimetallic and trimetallic nanoparticles. These shape-controlled and size-tunable Au–Pt bimetallic nanoparticles by chlorogenic acid will expand their biomedical applications in future. Graphic abstract

The continuous expansion of vinyl chloride production increases environmental pollution caused by mercury catalysts, which is an issue that urgently needs to be solved. Green and stable catalysts should be researched to alleviate this issue. In this research, Thiolactic acid acts as a ligand where sulfhydryl groups form a stable complex with Au on the surface of a spherical activated carbon (SAC). An Au-thiolactic acid/SAC catalyst was designed with a Au theoretical loading of 0.5% (mass) to overcome the disadvantages of traditional Au-based catalysts, such as a low conversion rate and poor life cycle. The ratio of Au to ligand was screened, and the activity was best when Au/S = 1:8. The formation of the Au-S bond was proven by FT-IR and UV–vis. The longevity test of the Au1S8 /SAC catalyst was carried out at 1200 h −1 for 50 h. Samples with reaction times of 0 h, 5 h, 10 h, 20 h, and 50 h were taken to monitor the catalyst status. The XPS and TPR tests proved that the Au-S bond broke as the acetylene hydrochlorination reaction proceeded. The DFT calculation proved that the Au-S bond is the active site, and the sulfur atom promotes the adsorption of C 2 H 2 by the catalyst.

In this work, we report a 3D biomass foam absorber by uniformly loading plasmonic Au nanoparticles (Au-NPs) on carbonized rice husk porous substrate for solar vapor generation. The organic bubbles were simultaneously used as templates to construct porous channels and as carriers to introduce Au-NPs. Owing to the characteristic plasma heating effects, Au-NPs can be as additional heat spots for vapor generation to enhance the solar-thermal conversion effect at visible waves. The 3D porous absorber enables convenient water transport and high light absorption of ~ 94.6%. The solar vapor evaporation efficiency is ~ 84% in pure water and ~ 75% in 15 wt% NaCl solution under 1 kW m −2 .

Zinc oxide (ZnO) as a commonly used semiconductor material has aroused extensive research attention in various fields, such as field-effect transistors, solar cells, luminescent devices, and sensors, because of its excellent light-electrical features and large exciton bonding energy. Herein, ultrasmall Au nanoparticles with tunable size decorated mesoporous ZnO nanospheres were synthesized via facile formaldehyde-assisted metal–ligand cross-linking strategy, where these active Au species could be transferred into Au nanoparticles in the frameworks by various reduction strategies. Typically, mesoporous ZnO–Au with a photoreduction technique showed superior ethanol sensing performance (ca. 159 for 50 ppm at 200 °C) because of its high surface area, dual-mesoporous structure, and interface effect (electron effect, surface catalytic/adsorption). Moreover, the mesoporous ZnO–Au composites by photoreduction show much better performance than those via H2 reduction and NaBH4 reduction, which is ascribed to the providential size of Au nanoparticles (ca. 6.6 nm) and abundant oxygen defects in the composites. In particular, the selectivity and sensitivity of mesoporous ZnO–Au far exceeds those of materials loaded with other noble metals (Pt, Pd, and Ag). The sensing mechanism of mesoporous ZnO–Au for ethanol is attributed to classical surface adsorption/catalytic reaction, where strong sensitization effect (electron and chemical) and the spillover effect of Au nanoparticles in the catalytic reaction cause superior ethanol sensing performances. In situ FTIR and GC-MS measurement revealed that the catalytic oxidation of ethanol follows the process of dehydrogenation and deep oxidation, that is, dehydrogenation to acetaldehyde, and then further oxidation to carbon dioxide and water.

The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) has long been studied in heterogonous catalysis on account of its importance in stabilizing active metals and tuning catalytic performance. As a dynamic process taking place at the metal-support interface, the SMSI is closely related to the metal surface properties which are usually affected by the size of metal nanoparticles (NPs). In this work we report the discovery of a size effect on classical SMSI in Au/TiO 2 catalyst where larger Au particles are more prone to be encapsulated than smaller ones. A thermodynamic equilibrium model was established to describe this phenomenon. According to this finding, the catalytic performance of Au/TiO 2 catalyst with uneven size distribution can be improved by selectively encapsulating the large Au NPs in a hydrogenation reaction. This work not only brings in-depth understanding of the SMSI phenomenon and its formation mechanism, but also provides an alternative approach to refine catalyst performance.

Active electrocatalysts are the key to water splitting for hydrogen production through the electrolysis. In this paper, 50 nm silver nanoplates were used as templates for synthesis of Au–Ag island-shaped nanoplates by controlling the surface chemistry. The guiding mechanism of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, Mw = 40 000) to Au–Ag island-shaped nanoplates crystal was also further investigated. It is found that the surface energy of Ag nanoplates between (100) and (111) crystal planes can be regulated by varying the amount of PVP in the system. Then a uniform Au-Ag triangular island nanostructure was obtained. Compared with the Ag nanoplates catalysts, the Au–Ag island nanoplates catalysts show the superior catalytic performances in hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis (HER). These results demonstrate a new surface chemistry modification by PVP and a galvanic displacement reaction for designing the active electrocatalysts. More importantly, the Au–Ag island-shaped nanoplates show an unconventional growth mode of preserving the original Ag nano-triangular crystal structure. The enhanced performance in electrocatalysis can be mainly attributed to Au–Ag alloy structure, which allows the appearance of synergistic effects. The present work demonstrates the crucial roles of surface chemistry in catalysts synthesis, which may guide the design of active bimetallic catalysts.

Plasmonic Au nanorods/CsPbBr 3 quantum dots film has been prepared via spin-coating. It is found that photoluminescence intensity of Au nanorods/CsPbBr 3 quantum dots film exhibits 2-fold enhancement compared with pristine CsPbBr 3 quantum dots film. Time-resolved photoluminescence decay curves show that the lifetime of CsPbBr 3 quantum dots film decreases from 6.15 ns to 4.78 ns after combining with Au nanorods. The finite-difference time-domain simulation indicates that Au nanorods arouse a localized surface plasmon resonance around 500 nm, which enhances the emission intensity of CsPbBr 3 quantum dots film.

BACKGROUND Glycerol, which is a coproduct of biodiesel production, has been identified as a key platform compound for producing various valuable chemicals. The selective catalytic oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone is very attractive. RESULTS A series of Au catalysts supported on metallic oxides, i.e. ZnO, CuO, Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 and NiO, were studied for selective catalytic oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone under base-free conditions. Among the catalysts, Au/CuO showed the best catalytic activity (glycerol conversion of 89% and dihydroxyacetone selectivity of 82.6% at 80 °C under 10 bar of O 2 ), followed by Au/ZnO ≫ Au/NiO > Au/Al 2 O 3 ≈ Au/CuO-SD ≈ Au/Fe 2 O 3 . The catalytic behaviors of these supported Au catalysts varied depending on the Au particle size, Au oxidation state, Au–support interactions and lattice oxygen reducibility. CONCLUSION The main reasons for the high catalytic activity of Au/CuO are as follows. Firstly, the catalyst has small metallic Au particles, which are more active in cleavage of the secondary C H bond in glycerol molecules. Secondly, the interactions between Au and CuO facilitate lattice oxygen reduction, and this increases oxygen mobility, which may promote regeneration of Au–support perimeter active sites by gaseous oxygen. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry
