Composite polymer materials featured superior thermal conductivity, flame retardancy, and electromagnetic shielding performance are increasingly in demand due to the rapid development of highly miniaturized, portable, and flexible electronic devices. Herein, a facile and green ball milling shear method is utilized for generating MXene@Boron nitride (MXene@BN). The multi-functional fillers (MXene@BN) are constructed and incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare a multifunctional composite (PDMS/MXene@BN) for achieving improved electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance and thermal conductivity as well as flame retardancy simultaneously. When the PDMS/MXene@BN composite has a MXene@BN loading of 2.4 wt.%, it exhibits a high thermal conductivity of 0.59 W m −1 K −1 , which is 210% higher than that of the pure PDMS matrix. This is attributed to its unique chestnut-like double-layer structure. With a smoke production rate (SPR) of 0.04 m 2 s −1 and total smoke production (TSP) of 3.51 m 2 , PDMS/MXene@BN 2.4 composite exhibits superb smoke suppression properties. These SPR and TSP values are 63.20% and 63.50% lower than the corresponding values of pure PDMS. Moreover, the EMI SE of the PDMS/MXene@BN 2.4 can reach 26.3 dB at 8.5 GHz. The work reported herein provides valuable insight into developing composites with multiple functions, which show strong potential for application in advanced packaging materials.

This study presented a fabrication protocol for a multifunctional coating integrating photothermal responsiveness, self-lubrication, and self-healing properties. The coating was engineered by encapsulating tung oil (TO) within a polysulfone (PSF) matrix, leveraging the photothermal conversion capability of photothermal fillers to achieve localized thermal activation for on-demand lubricant release and crack repair. The PSF-encapsulated tung oil microcapsules (PSF-TO) and polypyrrole-coated boron nitride (PPy@BN) were uniformly dispersed in epoxy resin, followed by spin-coating or trickle-coating onto substrate surfaces. The coated substrate was thermally cured to form a robust composite film, with its photothermal performance, tribological performance, and self-healing capability systematically evaluated. The coating was able to reach a surface temperature of 83 °C under one sunlight intensity and was able to repair surface scratches within 155 s. At the same time, its delayed icing time can reach 380 s, and under a sunlight intensity, the surface icing can be melted and slipped off within 75 s. This work provided a scalable strategy for extreme mechanical environments, such as marine and aerospace applications.

Chopped carbon fiber (CC f ) reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (CC f /SiC CMCs) hold potential as thermal structural materials. In this work, we investigated the impacts of dual protective interphases (pyrolytic carbon/boron nitride (PyC/BN)) deposited via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), along with the incorporation SiC whiskers (SiC w ) contents (20 wt%) on the structure and properties of as-fabricated CC f /SiC CMCs by NITE route. Structural and mechanical characteristics were explicated by the relevant advanced characterization tools. The introduction of PyC/BN dual protective interphase effectively preserved its integrity at elevated temperature and improved the toughness significantly via fiber pull-out and interfacial debonding mechanisms. Furthermore, incorporating 20 wt% SiC whiskers (SiCw) as secondary reinforcement yielded a synergistic toughening effect, promoting both the crack bridging and fiber pull-out behavior. This dual toughening mechanism led to a notable enhancement in mechanical performance, revealing an optimum bending strength of ∼356 ± 9.089 MPa, and toughness of ∼5.31 ± 0.194 MPa m 1/2 . Additionally, the inclusion of SiCw contributed to the creation of spatial network structure, potentially reducing the thermal expansion. The insights from this study advance the understanding of microstructural engineering in CC f /SiC composites, enabling future low-cost design and manufacturing of high-performance composites for extreme environments.

Modulating metal-support interactions is critical for improving catalytic activity and product selectivity for CO 2 hydrogenation. Such modulation can be achieved by modifying the metal nanoparticles as well as the supports. Here, we prepared a novel catalyst, in which Ni nanoparticles were dispersed on CeO 2 and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) hybrid supports. The introduction of h-BN to Ni/CeO 2 -BN effectively improves the dispersion of Ni nanoparticles. More importantly, the abundant Ni-CeO 2 interfacial sites with enriched oxygen vacancies are formed over h-BN edge sites. The dispersed Ni species are anchored on CeO 2 via a unique interfacial structure, with electron-rich Ni (Ni δ− ) species. At the interfacial sites on Ni/CeO 2 -BN, the synergy between oxygen vacancies and Ni δ− , which enhances CO 2 activation and H 2 dissociation, respectively, renders superior catalytic performance for CO 2 methanation. In situ DRIFTS suggests formate as key rate-limiting intermediates on Ni-CeO 2 sites, while the formation of B-H bonds further promotes hydrogen activation and subsequently the catalytic performance. The modulation of metal-support interactions by spatial confinement effect by BN offers a new paradigm for designing metal/oxide catalysts for chemical transformations that requires bifunctionality as CO 2 hydrogenation.

Porosity and cracks during the curing process of waterborne epoxy resins have severely limited their application. In this study, Zn 2+ was adsorbed on the surface of BN through a coordination reaction. And the electronegativity difference between Hexamethylene diamine tetramethylene phosphonic acid (Hdtmp) and Zn 2+ was exploited to make it forming a stable complex on the surface of BN. Corrosion-resistant composite coatings were prepared by doping the synthesized BN@Zn-Hdtmp hybrid materials into waterborne epoxy resin. The anticorrosion mechanism and anticorrosion properties of the BN@Zn-Hdtmp hybrid materials were predicted by molecular dynamics and density functional theory. Furthermore, after immersion in a 3.5 % NaCl solution for 45 days, the BN@Zn-Hdtmp/EP composite coating exhibited a significant decrease in resistance, from 3.371 × 10 9 Ω cm 2 to 1.845 × 10 7 Ω cm 2 . This represents a two-order-of-magnitude enhancement in resistance compared to pure EP. Additionally, the surface roughness of the carbon steel coated with BN@Zn-Hdtmp/EP was found to be lower than that of EP. EIS analysis of scratched coatings, salt spray tests, SEM images of the corroded areas and quantitative EDS spot scan analyses showed that the composite coatings have excellent self-healing properties. The crosslink ability between BN@Zn-Hdtmp and EP was demonstrated by DFT calculations as well as TGA tests to provide a new crosslinking mode and enhance the densification of EP. In the mechanical property tests, the tensile strength, elongation at break, and adhesion of the composite coatings were better than those of pure EP. The above results indicate that BN@Zn-Hdtmp/EP has excellent anticorrosive and mechanical properties, which provides a new method to achieve long-lasting anticorrosive protection of waterborne epoxy resin.

Encapsulated phase change materials (MPCMs) can be used to address thermal runaway issues in electronic devices and battery systems in small spaces or flexible requirements. In this work, polyurea microcapsules incorporating h-BN and encapsulating n-eicosane were successfully synthesized. The h-BN was embedded to enhance the microcapsules' thermal conductivity. Comprehensive characterizations revealed that the microcapsules' area change rates before and after phase transition were approximately 3 %. Among the various microcapsules, h/MC-2 exhibited the best performance, with an enthalpy value of 184.37 J/g, an encapsulation efficiency of 79.72 %, and a high thermal storage efficiency of up to 99 %. Moreover, the thermal conductivity coefficient increased by 51.24 % to 0.3297 W/(m·K) due to the addition of h-BN. Mechanical properties testing was conducted on individual h/MC-2 microcapsules, revealing an average nominal rupture tension of 46.31 ± 2.09 N/m and an average Young's modulus of 0.17 ± 0.01 GPa. Furthermore, the h/MC-2 microcapsules were combined with silicone gel to prepare composites, incorporating h-BN to enhance thermal conductivity. The composites were found to reduce the simulative chip temperature by 15.90 %, demonstrating their potential application in thermal management.

In this work, bionic structure design was introduced to optimize the mechanical properties of ceramics using Si 3 N 4 fibers and BN interfaces. It was shown that Si 3 N 4 f /BN i fibrous monolithic ceramic possessed outstanding fracture toughness with the K IC value of 13.06 MPa·m 1/2 while retaining the flexural strength of 603.59 MPa. This indicated that the BN interfaces extended the crack propagation path and improved the fracture toughness of ceramics. Meanwhile, the densification of ceramics was efficiently promoted by the constant application of pressure starting from room temperature during the sintering process, with a density of up to 3.18 g/cm 3 . An innovative fiber inclusion model was first established to calculate the residual stress, and predict the flexural strength considering residual stress. This work offers new prospects for the synchronous realization of high strength and toughness in Si 3 N 4 ceramics and for predicting the strength of fibrous monolithic ceramics. Graphical abstract

Phosphorus and fluorine are essential elements of living organisms. However, excessive phosphate and fluoride can severely harm the balance of aquatic ecosystems and public health. Therefore, it is particularly important to develop an adsorbent that combines good adsorption capacity, simple synthesis and easy separation for wastewater treatment. Based on this, we pioneered a novel porous boron nitride material-based composite (p-BN) through PEI grafting and rare earth (La/Ce) modification (2PEI/ASBN-Ln (Ln = La, Ce)). The point of zero charge (pH pzc ) of 2PEI/ASBN-La reached 10.0, significantly improving the carrier's surface negativity and overcoming the electrostatic repulsion issue in anion adsorption. Additionally, the N content of the modified adsorbents exceeded 50%, and the amino group content increased, further enhancing the density of adsorption sites. The adsorption capacities of fluoride and phosphate for the optimal sample 2PEI/ASBN-La reached 112.165 mg g −1 and 79.547 mg g −1 , respectively, while also exhibiting effective removal of other pollutants in water, significantly broadening its applicability. The adsorption mechanism study revealed that the removal process involves multiple pathways, including physisorption, ion exchange and complexation. Specifically, phosphate removal was dominated by strong complexation through ligand exchange, whereas fluoride adsorption relied more on ion exchange and strong electrostatic attraction at amino and rare earth metal sites. More importantly, we further introduced magnetic nanoparticles into the adsorbent (2PEI/ASBN-La (Fe 3 O 4 )). VSM tests showed that its saturation magnetization reached 19.116 emu g −1 , enabling rapid magnetic separation under an external magnetic field. Collectively, this study provides innovative perspectives for the water treatment and recycling sector.

The Pt catalysts supported on hexagonal BN (Pt/BN) are highly active and stable for propane combustion, with the highest specific reaction rate of 92.3 μmol gPt–1 s–1 and turnover frequency of 0.037 s–1 obtained on a 0.2Pt/BN catalyst at 220 °C. The Pt oxide in the catalyst could be partially reduced to the metallic state by propane during the reaction, which is beneficial for the improvement of activity, indicating that metallic Pt might be the active sites. The highly dispersed Pt particles stabilized at the grain boundary of BN could be more easily reduced in the reaction than those on the surface and thus are more active. Moreover, kinetic investigation reveals that the apparent activation energy of the Pt species at the grain boundary (111.6 ± 8.0 kJ mol–1) is much lower than that on the surface (172.4 ± 16.5 kJ mol–1), suggesting different reaction pathways on these catalysts and the possible participation of the grain boundary of the BN support in the reaction.

To address the poor mechanical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) ceramics while maintaining their high directional thermal conduction performance, this study proposes a laminated structure design using h-BN as the soft, thermally anisotropic matrix layer and ZrB 2 -SiC as the hard reinforcing layer. h-BN/ZrB 2 -SiC laminated composite ceramics with different layer thickness ratios were fabricated via tape casting and hot-pressing. The h-BN grains maintain strong preferred orientation with their c-axes aligned parallel to the sintering pressure, even after introducing ZrB 2 -SiC layers. At an optimal layer thickness ratio of 1:1, the laminated ceramic achieves the best mechanical performance, with a flexural strength of 169.09 ± 18.67 MPa and a fracture toughness of 8.32 ± 0.97 MPa·m 1/2 , representing increases of 74% and 169%, respectively, compared with tape casted monolithic h-BN ceramics. These enhancements arise from synergistic toughening mechanisms including crack deflection, branching and delamination. Moreover, the laminated structure preserves strong anisotropic thermal conduction. At a layer thickness ratio of 2:1, the composite exhibits the highest thermal conduction anisotropy, with a temperature difference of ∼5 °C between in-plane and through-plane directions at 150 °C. These results demonstrate that the h-BN/ZrB 2 -SiC laminated architecture effectively combines high directional heat transfer with significantly improved mechanical properties, offering a promising solution for advanced thermal management in microelectronics and high-power devices.
