Ceramic capacitors with ultrahigh power density are crucial in modern electrical applications, especially under high-temperature conditions. However, the relatively low energy density limits their application scope and hinders device miniaturization and integration. In this work, we present a high-entropy BaTiO 3 -based relaxor ceramic with outstanding energy storage properties, achieving a substantial recoverable energy density of 10.9 J/cm 3 and a superior energy efficiency of 93% at applied electric field of 720 kV/cm. Of particular importance is that the studied high-entropy composition exhibits excellent energy storage performance across a wide temperature range of −50 to 260 °C, with variation below 9%, additionally, it demonstrates great cycling reliability at 450 kV/cm and 200 °C up to 10 6 cycles. Electrical and in-situ structural characterizations revealed that the high-entropy engineered local structures are highly stable under varying temperature and electric fields, leading to superior energy storage performance. This study provides a good paradigm of the efficacy of the high-entropy engineering for developing high-performance dielectric capacitors.

Dielectric capacitors are employed extensively due to their exceptional performance, including a rapid charge–discharge speed and superior power density. However, their practical implementation is hindered by constraints in energy-storage density (ESD), efficiency (ESE), and thermal stability. To achieve domain engineering and improved relaxor behavior in 0.67BiFeO3-0.33BaTiO3-based Pb-free ceramics, the concerns have been addressed here by employing a synergistic high-entropy strategy involving the design of the composition of Sr(Mg1/6Zn1/6Ta1/3Nb1/3)O3 with B-site multielement coexistence and high configuration entropy. Remarkably, in (0.67-x)BiFeO3-0.33BaTiO3-xSr(Mg1/6Zn1/6Ta1/3Nb1/3)O3 ceramics with x = 0.08, a good ESE (η) of 75% and a recoverable ESD (Wrec) of 2.4 J/cm3 at 190 kV/cm were attained together with an ultrahigh hardness of ∼7.2 GPa. The high-entropy strategy, which is tailored by an increase in configuration entropy, can be attributed to the superior mechanical and ES properties. It also explains the enhanced random field and relaxation behavior, the structural coexistence of ferroelectric rhombohedral (R3c) and nonpolar pseudocubic (Pm-3m) symmetries, the decreased domain size, and evenly distributed polar nanoregions (PNRs). Moreover, improved thermal stability and outstanding frequency stability are also obtained. By boosting the configuration entropy, BiFeO3–BaTiO3 materials dramatically improved their complete energy storage performance. This suggests that designing high-performance dielectrics with high entropy can be a convenient yet effective technique, leading to the development of advanced capacitors.

Tribocatalysis for environmental remediation faces ongoing challenges related to elucidating complex mechanistic pathways and achieving efficient performance. Engineering surface oxygen vacancies within material systems holds promise for improving overall tribocatalytic efficiency. Herein, a facile solid-phase reduction method was used to generate oxygen vacancies-rich BaTiO 3 (R-BaTiO 3 ). Both the pristine BaTiO 3 and R-BaTiO 3 can harvest friction energy for further tribocatalytic degradation of RhB. The R-BaTiO 3 exhibited remarkably higher degradation rate constant for RhB removal, i.e., 0.177 h −1 , than that for the pristine BaTiO 3 , i.e., 0.0789 h −1 . The introduction of oxygen vacancies in R-BaTiO 3 reduced the energy bandgap and facilitated effective electron-hole separation, leading to the generation of more reactive oxygen species (•O 2 − and •OH). Tribo-generated holes were identified as the primary reactive species responsible for RhB degradation, surpassing the contributions of •O 2 − and •OH. A preliminary reaction mechanism based on both electron transfer and electron citation was proposed. The solid-phase reduction method employed in this study presents a promising way for enhancing tribocatalytic performance by introducing oxygen vacancies.

The phase structure, microstructure and electrical properties of 0.7BiFe 1- x (Zn 0.5 Ti 0.5 ) x O 3 –0.3BaTiO 3 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.07) (BFZT x -BT) ceramics prepared via a conventional solid-state reaction method were studied by emphasizing the effect of Bi(Zn 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 . BFZT x -BT ceramics show coexisting rhombohedral-pseudocubic ( R - PC ) phase when 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.05 and a single PC structure at x = 0.07. The fraction of R to PC phase ( C R / C PC ) calculated by Rietveld refinement was 53/47, 51/49, 21/79, 14/86 at x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05, respectively. Adding (Zn 0.5 Ti 0.5 ) 3+ leads to an enhanced insulation resistance 130 GΩ·cm for x = 0.05 composition under 1 kV/mm, which is one order of magnitude higher than that at 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.03. Owing to the synergy effects of polarization performance and proper C R / C PC fraction, optimum electrical properties of BFZT x -BT ceramics d 33 = 135 pC/N, T c = 482 °C, k p = 25% were attained at x = 0.05. Our result indicates that the formation of ternary solid solution is an effective and convenient strategy to enhance the electrical performance of BF-BT based piezoceramics by tailoring insulation resistance along with the phase structure.

Constructing heterojunctions has been proved to effectively improve the carrier transfer capability for enhanced catalytic activity. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 /BaTiO 3 heterojunctions were fabricated through self-assembly driven by hydrogen bonding between piezoelectric barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) stabilized by oleic acid molecules and titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) with surficial functional groups under continuous ultrasonic vibration. Owing to the formation of heterojunction, the separation of free charges can be promoted by the conductive Ti 3 C 2 . Additionally, the recombination of electrons and holes pairs in BaTiO 3 can be hindered by built-in piezoelectric field. Hence, the piezocatalytic activity of Ti 3 C 2 /BaTiO 3 was significantly enhanced by the accumulated piezoelectric effect, maintaining stability during the piezocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A and achieving rate constants that were 22.2 and 3.2 times higher than those of Ti 3 C 2 and BaTiO 3 , respectively. This work thus presents a novel strategy for designing high-activity heterojunction piezocatalysts through hydrogen bonding self-assembly.

BiFeO 3 -BaTiO 3 (BF-BT) ceramics are an excellent choice for high-temperature lead-free piezoelectric ceramic due to their high Curie temperature and good piezoelectric properties , but the volatilization of Bi leads to the formation of A-site cationic vacancies and oxygen vacancies , culminating in heightened leakage currents and detrimental effects on piezoelectric properties. In this study, a chemical composition of 0.70Bi (1+ x ) Fe 0·97 Al 0·03 O 3 -0.30BaTiO 3 ceramics, abbreviated as B 1+ x FA-BT, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05, were synthesized, with special attention on the effects of Bi compensation and poling process on their insulation and piezoelectric properties. Due to the coexistence of R - PC phases and low leakage current, B 1+ x FA-BT ceramics exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties and high Curie temperature, among which the B 1.02 FA-BT ceramic boasts optimal overall properties: d 33 = 196 pC N −1 , T C = 480 °C, k p = 34%, θ max = 49.5° and Q m = 32, under optimal poling parameters E p = 50 kV cm −1 and T p = 100 °C. The poling process is directly linked to the reorientation of domains, the redistribution of positive/negative space charge and the aggregation or injection of holes, which is achieved by tuning the poling field and temperature in a ceramic with optimal integrated piezoelectric properties. The poling process of BF-BT ceramics is significantly influenced by their leakage characteristics, which can have a significant impact on their overall performance. Optimizing electrical poling conditions and minimizing leakage current is crucial to achieving favorable piezoelectric properties in BF-BT ceramics with R - PC coexisting structures.

Piezocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants is emerging as a promising strategy for sustainable water treatment. However, conventional piezocatalysts, such as BaTiO 3 (BT) nanoparticles suffer from limitations such as poor recyclability, nanoparticle agglomeration, and the risk of secondary pollution. This study presents a novel strategy to overcome these limitations by integrating polydopamine (PDA)-modified BT nanoparticles into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes, forming PVDF/BT-PDA x nanocomposites. PDA serves as an effective surface modifier, enhancing the dispersion of BT nanoparticles, promoting the formation of polar β-phase PVDF, and strengthening interfacial interactions within the membrane matrix. The optimized PVDF/BT-PDA 5 membrane, containing 5 wt% PDA-modified BT nanoparticles, achieved a rifampicin degradation efficiency of 72.89 %, significantly surpassing that of unmodified PVDF membranes (47.77 %) and PVDF membranes with unmodified BT nanoparticles (43.4 %). Additionally, the PVDF/BT-PDA 5 membrane maintained over 90 % degradation efficiency after nine cycles, demonstrating excellent stability and reusability. These findings demonstrate that PDA-assisted integration improves both the piezocatalytic performance and recyclability of nanocomposite membranes, offering a promising and sustainable approach for water pollution remediation.

Improving the limited energy storage capacity of dielectric materials has long been an attractive challenge. In this work, a four-phase hybridized nanocomposite was designed. The linear polymer polyimide (PI) was added to the ferroelectric polymer polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and compounded with a nanoceramic BT@SiO2 with a core–shell structure. The results show that PVDF–PI/BT@SiO2 nanocomposites prepared by a straightforward spin-coating method have a significantly increased discharge energy density. The polymer blends obtain a tightly extended conformation in the amorphous region. Also, this provides an excellent matrix environment for the homogeneous dispersion of fillers. The core–shell structure, as a physical barrier, not only hinders the expansion of the breakdown path but also extends multiple polarization surfaces with gradient variations at the microscopic level. Therefore, the synergistic effect generated by polymer blending and core–shell structure effectively enhances the dielectric and stored energy characteristics of nanocomposites. The dielectric constant is stable at 11.39–18.7, and the dielectric loss is always lower than 0.136. The discharge energy density is 2.5 J/cm3, almost 110% higher than that of the BOPP films (about 1.2 J/cm3). These experimental results suggest that the composite system using core–shell structure and polymer blending is a new way to improve the energy density of dielectric materials.

The effects of Li/Er and Li/Bi co-substitution on the structure, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3 (BT) ceramics were investigated and analyzed. X-ray diffraction measurements show that the doped samples have a single tetragonal structure without secondary phases. Rietveld refinement results show that the Li/Er and Li/Bi ions tend to replace A-sites of BT lattices at low doping content. As the doping content increases, the Curie temperature moves to the high-temperature region due to the increased tetragonality and internal stress. Compared with the undoped ceramics, the ferroelectric properties of the doped ceramics are improved. The enhanced remnant polarization is attributed to the combined effects of large grain modulation and defect dipole arrangement.

Direct ink writing (DIW) enables the fabrication of complex flexible piezoelectric architectures. However, pure polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), despite its excellent electroactivity and mechanical flexibility, shows poor printability in DIW due to its unfavorable rheological properties. In this study, a DIW strategy for fabricating PVDF/BaTiO 3 (BTO) composites with an ultrahigh BTO content of 70 wt%, enables by an ethylene glycol (EG)-assisted formulation, is reported. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that EG molecules form hydrogen bonds with PVDF chains, facilitating effective solvation and dispersion of ceramic particles, while simultaneously modulating slurry rheology. The effects of BTO content on the rheological behavior of the ink, the crystallization and piezoelectric output of the DIW-printed composites was thoroughly examined. Consequently, BTO nanoparticles serve as efficient heterogeneous nucleation agents, significantly promoting the formation of the electroactive β -phase, which reaches a relative content of 66.61%. As a result, the printed composite delivers an open-circuit voltage of up to 38.6 V and a short-circuit current of 750 nA. Notably, the sample with 70 wt% BTO successfully charges a 1 μF capacitor to 4.5 V within 300 s and powered 12 commercial light-emitting diodes, demonstrating the promise of this DIW-printed composite for advanced energy harvesting applications.

To solve the limited active sites, high carrier recombination rate, and the photo-corrosion issues of layered MoS 2 , a novel chemically bonded BaTiO 3 /MoS 2 (BM-x, x = 2, 5, 10, and 20) dual piezoelectric heterojunction was synthesized. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with experimental characterizations revealed that chemical bonds are formed between the 3d orbitals of Ti in BaTiO 3 and the 3p orbitals of S in MoS 2 . These strong interactions enable BaTiO 3 to be firmly anchored on the surface of 2D MoS 2 sheets and thus enhance the structural stability of the catalyst. Furthermore, the intimate interfacial contact facilitates electron transfer from BaTiO 3 to MoS 2 , while the formed type-II heterostructure induces a built-in electric field that significantly improves the generation and separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Under the synergistic effect of ultrasonic vibration and light irradiation, the valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM) of the two phases become tilted, resulting in a significant increase in the planar potential difference between them and therefore enhancing the built-in electric field. Thus, the BM-10 sample achieves a high degradation rate and an excellent Cr(VI) removal efficiency. These findings provide new insights into the structural regulation and the optimization of catalytic activity for MoS 2 -based piezoelectric photocatalysts.

Relaxor ferroelectric oxides with the feature of polar nanoregions (PNRs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique structure and physical properties, which can be realized by disrupting the long-range ferroelectric ordering through enhancing composition disorder. To overcome the limitations of traditional dielectric materials for energy storage, great efforts have been made to design new high-entropy compounds for high performance dielectric capacitors, typically through substitutional doping that introduces local chemical and structural disorder. In this work, high-entropy perovskite oxides (Bi 0.2 Na 0.2 Ba 0.2 Ca 0.2 Sr 0.2 )TiO 3 (BNBSCT), (Bi 0.2 K 0.2 Ba 0.2 Ca 0.2 Sr 0.2 )TiO 3 (BKBSCT) and (La 0.2 Li 0.2 Ba 0.2 Ca 0.2 Sr 0.2 )TiO 3 (LLBSCT) ceramics are proposed to significantly improve the energy storage performance of BaTiO 3 ceramic by increasing the configurational entropy. The entropy-assisted synthesis approach, having A-site ions with different valence states and radii, can significantly increase the chemical disorder and lattice distortion of the high-entropy ceramics, resulting in strong local polar fluctuations which are found to influence the dielectric relaxor behavior, phase transitions and ferroelectric property. As a result, all the high-entropy ceramics exhibit higher maximum polarization ( P max ) and smaller remnant polarization ( P r ) values. Furthermore, it is found that a combination of relatively high P max , low P r and high dielectric breakdown strength (DBS) ensures that the LLBSCT high-entropy ceramic exhibits excellent recoverable energy density W rec of 5.16 J/cm 3 , energy storage efficiency η of 88 %, and eminent charging-discharging capability (e.g., ultra-short discharge time t 0.9 ∼ 68 ns, current density C D ∼ 716.51 A/cm 2 and power density P D ∼ 85.98 MW/cm 3 under an electric field of 240 kV/cm). Therefore, this work demonstrates that the high-entropy-assisted strategy provides a simple and effective approach for designing novel dielectric ceramic capacitors with superior energy-storage performance.
