High-performance 0D-2D S-scheme CdS-Bi2WO6 heterostructure for bifunctional photoelectrochemical detection and degradation of chlorpyrifos under visible light irradiation

Luping Feng,Enjun Chen,Xinfeng Li,Jianghong Wang,Yujie Fan,Leyao Jin,Peisong Tang,Lixiang Zhang

A bifunctional 0D-2D nanostructured S-scheme CdS-Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction for highly efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection coupled with the degradation of chlorpyrifos (CP) was prepared by hydrothermal growth of CdS quantum dots onto Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets. It was uncovered that the so-obtained heterojunction composites notably minimized the recombination of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and exhibited much improved PEC responses compared to pristine Bi 2 WO 6 because of the in-situ formed internal electrostatic field between CdS and Bi 2 WO 6 components induced by the S-scheme heterostructure. After the addition of CP, the interactions between Bi sites and the P=S/C=N groups of CP specifically inhibited the photocurrent signals of obtained CdS-Bi 2 WO 6 sample, impeding the separation and transfer of photoinduced carriers. Significantly, it was found that the photo-generated holes in Bi 2 WO 6 and • OH radicals produced within the PEC system could effectively interact with CP molecule, enabling simultaneous catalytic degradation during detection process and the possible intermediates and degradation pathways of CP were explored and speculated. As a result, a bifunctional PEC platform was introduced for the sensitive and efficient detection and degradation of CP. This platform holds potential to offer theoretical support for the monitoring and remediation of other organophosphate pesticides like CP.

Synthesis of Ag3PO4/RGO/Bi2WO6 Composites with Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Activity: Efficient Visible-Light Driven All-Solid-State Z-Scheme Photocatalyst

Yunyun Wang,Jixiang Wang,Hongqiang Shen,Pengwei Huo,Chunmei Li,Yongsheng Yan,Weidong Shi

The photocatalytic technology as a kind of green and potential technology has been paid more and more attention in ever-increasing environmental pollution and energy shortage. In this study, a practical strategy is proposed to facilitate effectively the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes by addition of graphene oxide in Ag 3 PO 4 and Bi 2 WO 6 nanocrystals semiconductor composites. Compared with GO-single component, the three-component RGO-Ag 3 PO 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 composites exhibited improved photocatalytic activity with a degradation rate that reached up to 91% for tetracycline (TC) by visible light irradiation. Graphene oxide served as an electronic conduction medium to effectively transfer the photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of Bi 2 WO 6 to the valence band of Ag 3 PO 4 ; the all-solid-state Z-Scheme photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. Our work provides an effective method for development of pragmatic photocatalysts in the present environmental pollution, energy problems and other related fields.

Bi0/I− co-modified BiOIO3/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction catalysts for degradation of antibiotics under visible light: Mechanism, optimization and pathway

Zhaoxin Huang,Shasha Zhang,Pengfei Zhu,Ming Duan,Yuling Jiang,Yu Chen

The BiOIO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 binary catalyst was prepared by hydrothermal method, and a Bi 0 /I − -BiOIO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 all-solid-state Z-scheme heterojunction composite catalyst with Bi 0 deposition and I-doping was prepared by further reducing it with NaBH 4 as reducing agent. When the content of BiOIO 3 is 20 wt% and n(NaBH 4 ): n(BiOIO 3  + Bi 2 WO 6 ) = 0.3, Bi 0 /I − -BiOIO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 has the best photocatalytic activity. Under the optimized reaction conditions (catalyst dosage 1.0 g/L, antibiotic initial concentration 20 mg/L), the degradation efficiency of oxytetracycline (OTC) reached 83.56 % after 60 min reaction under visible light, and its pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant was 0.02431 min −1 , which was 2.56 times and 3.94 times that of pure Bi 2 WO 6 and pure BiOIO 3 , respectively. The characterization results show that the main reasons for the improvement of the activity of Bi 0 /I − -BiOIO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 are the formation of heterojunction in the catalyst, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect generated by Bi 0 and the impurity energy level introduced by I-doping, which jointly promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs (e − -h + ) in the catalyst and enhance the absorption capacity of the catalyst to visible light. The intermediates produced during the reaction were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Two possible pathways for the degradation of OTC by Bi 0 /I − -BiOIO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 were proposed. Finally, the electron transfer mechanism of Bi 0 /I − -BiOIO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 all-solid-state Z-scheme heterojunction was proposed based on the test results of Tauc-plot curve and M–S curve.

Preparation of direct Z-scheme heterojunction la-doped Bi2WO6/CdS with enhanced visible light absorption and its photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics

Shasha Zhang,Pengfei Zhu,Ming Duan,Bing He,Xinglin Li,Xiya Xin

In this paper, a novel direct Z-scheme heterojunction La-Bi 2 WO 6 /CdS composed of 3-dimensional flower-like Bi 2 WO 6 and hexagonally stacked succulent CdS was successfully designed and synthesized. The morphology, optical properties, element valence and crystal structure of the catalysts were systematically characterized. When the dosage of LBC-40 was 1.0 g/L, the degradation rate of oxytetracycline (OTC, 20 mg/L, pH = 6) was 85.28 %, under low visible light illumination (65 W energy saving lamp) for 120 min and the reaction kinetic constant (0.01336 min −1 ) was 2.50 and 1.56 times that of pure Bi 2 WO 6 and La-Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. Moreover, La-Bi 2 WO 6 /CdS showed good photocatalytic activity for other single antibiotics, mixed antibiotics and antibiotics from different water sources. The photocatalytic activity only decreased by 7.69 % after 3 cycles. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic degradation pathway and photocatalytic mechanism of OTC were proposed. The excellent photocatalytic performance of La-Bi 2 WO 6 /CdS is for that the doping of La 3+ and the construction of direct Z-scheme heterojunction enhances the visible light absorption capacity and separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. This paper reports a new method, which can provide a reference for the design and development of visible light responsive photocatalysts with excellent photocatalytic properties.

Synergistic enhancement of Z-scheme (SiO2/TiO2)/Bi2WO6 heterojunction by oxygen vacancies and interfacial electric field for efficient degradation of antibiotics

Wei Liu,Daoyin Liu,Hongjian Tang,Zhenkun Sun,Lunbo Duan

Synthesis of efficient photocatalysts is essential for the removal of antibiotic-based contaminants from wastewater. In this work, novel Z-scheme (SiO 2 /TiO 2 )/Bi 2 WO 6 (SiTiBi) heterojunction photocatalysts are synthesized by atomic layer deposition and hydrothermal methods, and the photocatalytic performance is improved by constructing oxygen vacancies and internal electric field (IEF). 15-SiTiBi (15 wt% SiO 2 /TiO 2 ) exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity, with 89 % LVF degradation in 30 min and a degradation kinetic constant of 0.072 min −1 . In addition, based on free radical trapping, electron spin resonance, photoelectrochemical tests, and DFT calculations, show that oxygen vacancies enhance the light absorption, and IEF strengthens the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Finally, the degradation intermediates and degradation pathways of LVF are predicted using LC-MS and first-principles. This work provides an effective method for constructing interfacial structures that facilitate the separation of photogenerated carriers and promote antibiotic degradation.

A novel Bi2S3/Bi2WO6/SnS2 photocatalyst with a double Z-scheme heterojunction for highly efficient degradation of antibiotics under visible light

Xuemei Chen,Pengfei Zhu,Xiya Xin,Yu Chen,Xinglin Li

In this paper, a novel and highly efficient Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 /SnS 2 double Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized by a solvothermal method for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). After 60 min of visible light photocatalytic reaction, the degradation rate of TC at 20 mg/L by the Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 /SnS 2 catalyst was as high as 92.33 %, the removal rate of total organic carbon (TOC) was 66.15 %, and the toxicity of the TC degradation solution decreased significantly. The pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics fitting constant (0.02731 min −1 ) for its photocatalytic degradation of TC was 5.71 and 1.87 times that of pure Bi 2 WO 6 (0.00478 min −1 ) and Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 (0.01462 min −1 ), respectively. Meanwhile, the Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 /SnS 2 photocatalyst also has excellent salt tolerance, versatility and cycling stability, showing good application potential. Multiple characterization results reveal that the enhancement of the activity of the Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 /SnS 2 photocatalyst is mainly due to the fact that, on the one hand, the coupling of Bi 2 S 3 and SnS 2 to Bi 2 WO 6 greatly improves the visible light response ability of the catalyst. On the other hand, it significantly increases the surface area of the catalyst, not only enhancing its adsorption capacity but also exposing more surface active sites. Most importantly, the formation of the double Z-scheme heterojunction between Bi 2 S 3 , SnS 2 and Bi 2 WO 6 enhances the interfacial charge transfer efficiency, thereby promoting the effective separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. This paper provides a new strategy for purifying antibiotics in water by using Bi 2 WO 6 -based photocatalysts.

Point-of-Use Water Treatment: Energy-autonomous Synergistic Solar Photothermal-Piezocatalysis on MXene/Bi2WO6 Membranes for Distributed Removal of Sulfonamide Antibiotics

Junzhuo Cai,Jiaxin Liu,Yu Bon Man,Jixiang Chen,Luting Li,Xiaoxun Xu,Chengyi Huang,Changlian Xu,Guochun Lv,Xin Qi,Zhanbiao Yang,Guiying Wang,Ming Hung Wong,Zhang Cheng

This work presents an energy-autonomous system for antibiotic removal in distributed water treatment using a MXene/Bi 2 WO 6 membrane that synergistically harnesses solar and hydrodynamic energy. During in-pipe flow under solar irradiation, the membrane achieved efficient removal of sulfamethoxazole (97.9%). The efficiency surpasses the additive contributions of standalone photocatalysis (PC) and piezoelectric catalysis (PZC) (79.4%), confirming significant PC-PZC synergy. Mechanistic studies reveal: (1) The piezoelectric field mitigates thermally induced charge recombination, while pyroelectric effects and thermal lattice expansion supplement piezoelectric generation; (2) Periodic band structure modulation and electron polarization likely enhance the degradation process; and (3) In situ electron magnetic resonance verified augmented generation of active multi-species. Crucially, the technology eliminates phytotoxicity risks, reduces antibiotic resistance genes, maintains efficacy across diverse water matrices, and exhibits robust long-term stability. The treated effluent meets reclaimed irrigation water standards, underscoring its positive environmental implications. This work advances novel synergistic catalyst design and offers a unique in-pipe treatment strategy aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Synergistic SPR and IEF effects in Pt-modified 2D/2D BiOBr/Bi2WO6 S-scheme heterojunction for ultrafast degradation of organic pollutants

Jin Chen,Jiayu Lei,Jie Yan,Yuzhao Ma,Xiaofeng Yang,Yanjun Li

The establishment of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and an internal electric field (IEF) has been recognized as an effective technique for optimizing pollutant treatment in aquatic environments. Herein, we synthesized a novel 2D/2D Pt@BiOBr/Bi 2 WO 6 S-scheme heterojunction that establishes robust interfacial connections to enhance electron transport through minimized pathways, while simultaneously increasing active site availability. Subsequently, noble metal Pt was employed to modify the BiOBr/Bi 2 WO 6 composite material, thereby inducing SPR and broadening the light absorption range. Impressively, the optimized Pt@BiOBr/Bi 2 WO 6 demonstrates a significantly enhanced degradation efficiency for organic pollutants, primarily due to the synergistic effects of SPR and IEF. The degradation rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCL) through the ternary heterojunction 2-PBB can achieve 100 % within 30 min under 500 W of visible light irradiation, showcasing impressive cyclic stability. Furthermore, the developed photocatalyst also demonstrated remarkable degradation efficiency for organic dyes such as Rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO). This work demonstrates an original approach to the fabrication of Pt-modified S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts with high effectiveness.

Eu/Fe Co-doped Bi2WO6 nanocatalyst: Synergistic photo-Fenton catalysis for rapid dye degradation with robust pH tolerance and ecological safety

Yuanqing Wang,Yusong Pan,Shuhuan He,Run Huang

This study reports an innovative europium-iron co-doped bismuth tungstate catalyst (EF-Bi 2 WO 6 ) for rapid organic pollutant degradation through a visible light-driven photo-Fenton process. The results of degradation experiment verified that the 1-EF-BWO catalyst exhibited superior photo-Fenton catalytic activity relative to single-doped and undoped Bi 2 WO 6 , achieving over 99 % degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 6 min, with a kinetic rate constant of 0.9745 min −1 , which was 4.81 times higher than pure Bi 2 WO 6 (0.1678 min −1 ) and 2.42–2.92 times superior to Eu- or Fe-doped Bi 2 WO 6 . Remarkably, 1-EF-BWO maintained consistent degradation efficiency across a broad pH value and diverse ionic environments, showcasing robust operational adaptability. The enhanced catalytic activity is attributed to synergistic electron transfer mechanisms between Eu 3+ , Fe 3+ , and the Bi 2 WO 6 matrix, which optimized band gap structure to facilitate charge carrier separation. EPR spectroscopy revealed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), photogenerated holes (h + ), and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) served as the primary reactive species driving pollutant mineralization. Reusability tests demonstrated remarkable catalytic stability over multiple cycles. Phytotoxicity assessments revealed that EF-Bi 2 WO 6 -treated wastewater significantly enhanced mung bean germination rates, underscoring its ecological compatibility for sustainable wastewater remediation. These results establish EF-Bi 2 WO 6 as a sustainable, pH-tolerant nanocatalyst with dual advantages of ultrafast degradation kinetics and environmental safety.

Defect-Engineered Z-Scheme Heterojunction of Fe-MOFs/Bi2WO6 for Solar-Driven CO2 Conversion: Synergistic Surface Catalysis and Interfacial Charge Dynamics

Ting Liu,Yun Wu,Hao Wang,Jichang Lu,Yongming Luo

The urgent need for sustainable CO2conversion technologies has driven the development of advanced photocatalysts that harness solar energy. This study employs a CTAB-assisted solvothermal method to fabricate a Z-scheme heterojunction Fe-MOFs/VO-Bi2WO6(FM/VO-BWO) for photocatalytic CO2reduction. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) was employed to confirm the existence of oxygen vacancies, while spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (STEM) characterization verified the successful construction of heterointerfaces. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra confirmed that the defect configuration and heterostructure changed the surface chemical valence state. The optimized 1.0FM/VO-BWO composite demonstrated exceptional photocatalytic performance, achieving CO and CH4yields of 60.48 and 4.3 μmol/g, respectively, under visible-light 11.8- and 1.5-fold enhancements over pristine Bi2WO6. The enhanced performance is attributed to oxygen vacancy-induced active sites facilitating CO₂ adsorption/activation. In situ molecular spectroscopy confirmed the formation of critical CO2-derived intermediates (COOH* and CHO*) through surface interactions involving four-coordinated and two-coordinated hydrogen-bonded water molecules. Furthermore, the accelerated interfacial charge transfer efficiency mediated by the Z-scheme heterojunction has been conclusively demonstrated. This work establishes a paradigm for defect-mediated heterojunction design, offering a sustainable route for solar fuel production.

Boosting clean water evaporation and sustainable water treatment by photothermally induced artificial system

Wang Shi,Dang Chenyang,Li Mengli,Gu Li,Wu Jun,Cao Xuebo

Efficiently harnessing abundant and renewable solar energy for sustainable and continuous municipal sewage or industrial outlet water treatment to deal with water crisis has been an urgency for researchers in the past decades. Herein, a scalable and cost-effective solar steam device built up of surface-carbonized cane (CC) and Bi 2 WO 6 nanoflower photocatalyst is demonstrated, which exhibits high efficiency for concurrent waste water treatment and solar-to-water evaporation. CC is chosen as artificial core component in this system due to its nature-made periodic micro-/nanochannels, low heat conductivity, which contributes to extraordinary water transport, evaporation capacity and thermal management. Compared to natural cane, CC exhibits remarkably enhanced light absorption capacity and solar-to-water evaporation efficiency. Moreover, through the modification of Bi 2 WO 6 nanoflower, the system shows an optimized utilization of absorbed photons for high redox charge carriers in photocatalytic degradation and heat generation to promote the water treatment, leading to enhanced pollutant degradation efficiency. The steam generation performance reaches up to 1.417 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and solar-to-water evaporation efficiency of ~ 91.7% under 1 sun irradiation, which are among the highest values in the literatures. Continuous water purification and freshwater production from municipal sewage are also carried out in a home-made tandem system. Graphical abstract
