Interfacial synergy of Pd sites and defective BiOBr for promoting the solar-driven selective oxidation of toluene

Xiaoli Li,Ting Wang,Xueqin Tao,Ganhua Qiu,Can Li,Benxia Li

Metal-modified semiconductors are being deemed as one of the most promising photocatalysts for various applications. Although great efforts have been devoted to developing a variety of metal-modified semiconductor photocatalysts, the exact functions of their interfaces in governing photocatalytic processes still remain elusive. Herein, the interfacial synergy of metal sites and defective semiconductor with oxygen vacancies (VOs) was investigated toward the photocatalytic selective oxidation of toluene, by taking the Pd/BiOBr photocatalyst as an example. The presence of Pd induces the generation of more VOs on the BiOBr surface due to the electronic interaction at the Pd–BiOBr interface. The coexistence of the Pd and VO sites on BiOBr enables the favorable adsorption of O2 and toluene molecules. The Pd–BiOBr interface governs the charge separation and prompts the activation of O2 and toluene, leading to 1.5 times the activity of BiOBr–VO for the photocatalytic selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde with a high selectivity (>99%). Moreover, the typical influencing factors, such as the illumination intensity and toluene concentration, were optimized to improve the photocatalytic efficiency. The active species and intermediates in the photocatalytic reaction were identified by a series of controlled experiments, as well as in situ ESR measurements. Therefore, both experimental and theoretical results provide the direct evidence to understand the key roles of the interfacial Pd and VO sites in enhancing photocatalysis toward the selective oxidation of toluene.

Hongyu Luo,Ming Yan,Yilin Wu,Xinyu Lin,Yongsheng Yan

Porous TiO 2 nanorods were synthesized by H 2 SO 4 etching method, combined with the synthesis technology of BiOBr-TiO 2 heterojunction and NCQDs to synthesis the ternary NCQDs-BiOBr-TiO 2 photocatalyst. The micromorphology and structural composition of different powder catalysts and photocatalytic composite membranes were studied by means of various characterization methods. The UV–vis DRS results indicated that the formation of BiOBr-TiO 2 heterojunction and the introduction of NCQDs extended the visible light absorption range of photocatalytic materials. The BSA adsorption performances of different composite membranes were investigated, and the results showed that 0.5-NCQDs-BiOBr-TiO 2 /PVDF composite membranes had strong antifouling properties. Moreover, it was found that the 0.5-NCQDs-BiOBr-TiO 2 /PVDF composite membranes exhibited high regeneration stability and easy separation recovery performance. The results showed that the TC degradation rate of 0.5-NCQDs-BiOBr-TiO 2 /PVDF composite membranes reached 77% within 120 min. Moreover, the pseudo first order kinetic apparent rate constant k value of the 0.5-NCQDs-BiOBr-TiO 2 /PVDF composite membranes was 0.01342 min −1 .

Synergistic effect of iodine doping and platinum loading on boosting the visible light photocatalytic activity of BiOBr

Tongtong Liu,Yawen Wang

Platinum loaded BiOBr with iodine doping photocatalyst (Pt/I-BiOBr) was synthesized to further improve the photocatalytic activity of BiOBr. The photocatalytic test showed the bisphenol A degradation efficiency of Pt/I-BiOBr under visible light was about 93% within 20  min, about 5.8, 1.5 and 1.3 times that of BiOBr, iodine doped BiOBr and platinum loaded BiOBr, respectively. The composition, morphology, optical property and dominant active radical were investigated. Based on the results, a possible mechanism was proposed. Iodine doping and platinum loading played a synergetic effect on broadening the visible light absorption range and increasing the photo-induced carrier separation efficiency of BiOBr.

A novel 0D/2D WS2/BiOBr heterostructure with rich oxygen vacancies for enhanced broad-spectrum photocatalytic performance

Shuai Fu,Wei Yuan,Xianming Liu,Yunhui Yan,Haiping Liu,Li Li,Fengying Zhao,Jianguo Zhou

In this study, a novel 0D/2D WS 2 /BiOBr heterostructured photocatalyst with rich oxygen vacancies was fabricated by a hydrothermal method. The WS 2 QDs/BiOBr-10 heterostructures exhibited a maximum removal rate of 92% towards ciprofloxacin (CIP) within 100 min under visible-light irradiation, which was 2.63- and 2.02- folds higher activity than that of pristine BiOBr and WS 2 QDs/BiOBr-10 with poor oxygen vacancies, respectively. In addition, the removal efficiencies of this photocatalyst towards various pollutants were 99% (Lanasol Red 5B), 95% (Rhodamine B), 85% (metronidazole), 96% (tetracycline) and 41% (Bisphenol A), respectively. Besides, the simultaneous photocatalytic degradation showed the competitive interactions between these organic contaminants for the active species, decreasing the removal efficiency for CIP. However, the simultaneous photocatalytic oxidation of CIP and reduction of Cr(VI) improved the utilization efficiency of photo-induced electrons and holes, resulting in high removal efficiencies for both CIP and Cr(VI). Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra (3D EEMs) were used to investigate the degradation of CIP molecules. The synergistic effect of heterostructure and oxygen vacancies greatly assisted in the removal of organic pollutants, attributing to the enhanced visible-light harvesting and effective separation of photo-induced electron–hole pairs. Furthermore, trapping experiments and ESR results demonstrated that the CIP removal was dominated by the direct oxidation of holes (h + ), whereas the hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and superoxide radicals ( O 2 − ) acted as auxiliary active species. This study provides a new way to rationally design and construct active 0D/2D pattern heterojunction photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Xiaojing Yu,Haoran Qiu,Bin Wang,Qingnan Meng,Shaodong Sun,Yufei Tang,Kang Zhao

To construct Z-scheme not only can effectively separate the excited electron-hole pairs, but also utilize the ample redox capability of each semiconductor component in this system for the surface photocatalytic reaction. In this work, a TiO 2 –Au–BiOBr ternary Z-scheme photocatalyst was constructed, in which Au NPs were used as the electron mediator to join BiOBr nanosheets and TiO 2 nanofibers . The results showed that, under full spectrum irradiation, TiO 2 –Au–BiOBr nanofibers exhibited outstanding photocatalytic performance toward the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) with an excellent photodegradation efficiency of 99.91% within 30 min as well as good stability. The reaction mechanism of the TiO 2 –Au–BiOBr Z-scheme system was systemically studied by XPS , photoelectrochemical tests and free radical trapping experiments, etc. Moreover, the photocatalyst also exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for degrading methyl orange and methylene blue.

A durable superhydrophobic BiOBr/PFW cotton fabric for visible light response degradation and oil/water separation performance

Bo Ge,Xuewen Yang,Heyuan Li,Limin Zhao,Guina Ren,Xiao Miao,Xipeng Pu,Wenzhi Li

In order to solve the problem of pollutants remained in water after oil removal, the visible light responsive non-wetting BiOBr cotton fabrics were prepared through a simple immersion method. The material is not only able to separate the oil/water mixture efficiently, but also has the properties of visible light response degradation of water soluble pollutants. The degradation efficiency of water soluble methylene blue and rhodamine B were 98% and 97%, respectively. Then, the active species capture experiment demonstrated that O 2 − and h + play a major role in the photocatalytic process. Finally, the stability of the prepared superhydrophobic BiOBr cotton fabric was proven using friction test, ultrasonic treatment for a long time, immersion in different pH value solutions and 6 cycles of cycling degradation experiments. In this study, the superhydrophobic BiOBr cotton fabric with photocatalitic property may provide a new solution for the treatment of water resource.

Convenient fabrication of BiOBr ultrathin nanosheets with rich oxygen vacancies for photocatalytic selective oxidation of secondary amines

Tong Xuanjue,Cao Xing,Han Tong,Cheong Weng-Chon,Lin Rui,Chen Zheng,Wang Dingsheng,Chen Chen,Peng Qing,Li Yadong

Photocatalytic oxidation has been widely employed in organic synthesis, by virtue of the green, mild and simple reaction conditions as well as high selectivity. Introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs) with proper concentrations into the photocatalysts has been proven as an effective strategy to boost the catalytic performances. However, the currently used treatment method under high temperature at reducing atmosphere inevitably introduces a large number of OVs at the interior of the catalyst and serving as the recombination centers of carriers. To address this issue, here we develop a facile solvothermal process to prepare ultrathin BiOBr nanosheets with rich surface OVs. This method effectively decreases the bulk of the material and the ratio of interior OVs, rendering most of the OVs exposed on the surfaces which act as exposed catalytic sites and enhance the separation of carriers, therefore significantly elevates the photocatalytic performances. For the photo-oxidation reaction of secondary amines, under the conditions of visible light, ambient temperature and atmosphere, the BiOBr nanosheets featuring rich surface OVs deliver a doubled conversion compared to those with low OV concentrations, and a high selectivity of 99%, a high stability as the performance shows no reduction after 5 times of circular reaction.

Enhanced photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO over BiOBr assisted by phenolic resin-based activated carbon spheres

Kangli Liu,Xiaochao Zhang,Changming Zhang,Guangmin Ren,Zhanfeng Zheng,Zhiping Lv,Caimei Fan

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 using solar energy to decrease CO2 emission is a promising clean renewable fuel production technology. Recently, Bi-based semiconductors with excellent photocatalytic activity and carbon-based carriers with large specific surface areas and strong CO2 adsorption capacity have attracted extensive attention. In this study, activated carbon spheres (ACSs) were obtained via carbonization and steam activation of phenolic resin-based carbon spheres at 850 °C synthesized by suspension polymerization. Then, the BiOBr/ACSs sample was successfully prepared via a simple impregnation method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX, DRS, PL, EIS, XPS, BET, CO2 adsorption isotherm and CO2-TPD. The BiOBr and BiOBr/ACSs samples exhibited high CO selectivity for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, and BiOBr/ACSs achieved a rather higher photocatalytic activity (23.74 μmol g−1 h−1) than BiOBr (2.39 μmol g−1 h−1) under simulated sunlight irradiation. Moreover, the analysis of the obtained results indicates that in this photocatalyst system, due to their higher micropore surface area and larger micropore volume, ACSs provide enough physical adsorption sites for CO2 adsorption, and the intrinsic structure of ACSs can offer effective electron transfer ability for a fast and efficient separation of photo-induced electron–hole pairs. Finally, a possible enhanced photocatalytic mechanism of BiOBr/ACSs was investigated and proposed. Our findings should provide new and important research ideas for the construction of highly efficient photocatalyst systems for the reduction of CO2 to solar fuels and chemicals.

The Ternary Heterostructures of BiOBr/Ultrathin g-C3N4/Black Phosphorous Quantum Dot Composites for Photodegradation of Tetracycline

Tianhao Jiang,Chaoqun Shang,Qingguo Meng,Mingliang Jin,Hua Liao,Ming Li,Zhihong Chen,Mingzhe Yuan,Xin Wang,Guofu Zhou

Herein, we synthesized BiOBr/ultrathin g-C3N4/ternary heterostructures modified with black phosphorous quantum dots using a simple water bath heating and sonication method. The ternary heterostructure was then used for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in visible light, with an efficiency as high as 92% after 3 h of irradiation. Thus, the photodegradation efficiency is greatly improved compared to that of ultrathin g-C3N4, BiOBr, and black phosphorous quantum dots alone. The synthesized ternary heterostructure improves the charge separation efficiency, thus increasing the photodegradation efficiency. This work provides a new and efficient method for the degradation of antibiotics in the environment. Keywords:BiOBr;ultrathin g-C3N4;black phosphorous quantum dots;photodegradation;antibiotics

Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B Using Sodalite/BiOBr Composites Synthesized via Liquid-Phase Self-Assembly

Wei Guo,Laixue Pang,Weipeng Kong,Rui Kuang,Xiaoying Wang,Xiuying Hu,Xiaofeng Tian,Shuxia Bai,Yongling Ding,Huadong Sun

In this study, a series of sodalite/BiOBr composite photocatalysts were successfully synthesized via a liquid-phase self-assembly strategy and applied to the efficient visible-light-driven degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). Structural characterizations confirmed the successful integration of sodalite (SOD) and BiOBr, with the SOD/BiOBr (3:7) composite exhibiting an optimal morphology, enhanced interfacial contact, and favorable physicochemical properties. The composite demonstrated broadened visible-light absorption, improved photogenerated charge carrier separation, and significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity, achieving a degradation efficiency of 97.82% within 15 min. Moreover, the SOD/BiOBr (3:7) composite exhibited excellent stability and recyclability, retaining 86.31% of its initial photocatalytic performance after four consecutive cycles. These findings highlight the great potential of SOD/BiOBr composites as highly efficient and reusable photocatalysts for the removal of organic pollutants. Furthermore, LC-MS analysis identified several degradation intermediates, and two possible degradation pathways─N-deethylation and cleavage of the conjugated ring structure─were proposed. Radical trapping experiments indicated that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and photogenerated holes (h+) were the dominant reactive species involved in the photocatalytic degradation process.

Constructing Lewis acid-base pairs on S-scheme Al-BiOBr/Bi2O3 heterojunctions for highly efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Xue Yang,Donghui Cui,Yu Liu,Yuexin Xiang,Fengyan Li,Guangshan Zhu

Al/Bi-O acid-base pairs were built by spatially selective Al doping in BiOBr/Bi 2 O 3 heterojunction. • The NH 3 yield reached 801.3 μmol g −1 h −1 in pure water, exceeding transition metal doped systems. • Al 3+ polarization activates lattice oxygen as primary Lewis base sites. • In situ KPFM visualizes S scheme charge transfer and the amplified built in field from Al doping. • Oxygen vacancies supply π backdonation channels and enrich electron density of nearby lattice oxygen. Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation has long been constrained by the intrinsic inertness of the N N bond and the severe recombination of photoexcited electron-hole pairs. Here, we construct an aluminum-doped BiOBr/Bi 2 O 3 S-scheme heterojunction in which Al 3 + selectively replaces Bi 3+ sites in the BiOBr lattice, while the Bi 2 O 3 phase retains its inherent crystal structure almost entirely. This asymmetric doping configuration strengthens the internal electric field across the S-scheme interface. The strong polarizing ability of Al 3+ activates nearby lattice oxygen atoms into Lewis base sites and induces the formation of additional oxygen vacancies (Ov), while simultaneously extracting electron density from adjacent Bi centers via Al-O-Bi bridge bonds, thereby enhancing the Lewis acidity of Bi. The resulting Al/Bi-O Lewis acid-base pair activates N 2 through a synergistic push-pull mechanism, in conjunction with the charge modulation induced by the oxygen vacancies. In pure water and in the absence of any sacrificial agent, the optimally designed photocatalyst achieves an NH 3 production rate as high as 801.3 μmol g −1 h −1 under simulated sunlight, surpassing transition-metal-doped analogues. This work establishes a lattice-confined Lewis acid-base pair paradigm, opening a new avenue for designing high-efficiency nitrogen-fixing photocatalysts. Tunable oxygen vacancies in BiOBr nanosheets: Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride and perfluorooctanoic acid with distinct mechanisms

Qi Zeng,Chu-Ya Wang,Guangcan Zhu

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TTCH) are typical emerging pollutants with distinct molecular structures. TTCH contains C–H bonds in its molecule, but PFOA does not contain C-H bonds. The absence of C–H bonds makes PFOA insensitive to free radicals such as •OH. This structural difference poses a significant challenge for the efficient degradation of both pollutants. In this study, BiOBr nanosheets with adjustable concentrations of oxygen vacancies (OVs) were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal process. The photocatalytic efficiencies of MP2-BiOBr for PFOA and TTCH degradation were 3.93 and 3.89 times those of BiOBr. Electrochemical results indicated that the improvement in charge separation efficiency was the primary factor enhancing the photocatalytic performance of catalysts after the introduction of OVs. Additionally, the photocatalytic degradation of TTCH mainly involved active species •O 2 − , while PFOA was degraded through a direct oxidation process by photogenerated h + . Two possible decomposition pathways of PFOA over MP2-BiOBr are illustrated. Furthermore, The structure-performance relationship between OV-modified BiOBr and improved photocatalytic performance was established. This study presents a facile method for introducing OVs into BiOBr and provides some new insights into the mechanisms of pollutant degradation. It offers a promising strategy for the efficient treatment of complex wastewater containing diverse contaminants.
