BiVO 4 was prepared by Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O and NH 4 VO 3 via a facial method. (3-acrylamide propyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride (ATAC) and allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) were reacted with 3-mercaptopropyl triethoxysilane (KH590) under ultraviolet irradiation, respectively, to prepare hydrophilic and reactive components. Then self-dispersive and reactive BiVO 4 nanoparticles were acquired after mixing hydrophilic and reactive components. Cotton fabric loaded with self-dispersive and reactive BiVO 4 was obtained by dipping-drying-curing method. BiVO 4 before and after modification was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), zeta potential and particle size. X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) were adopted to characterize crystal structure, surface morphology and chemical element components of cotton fabric. Ultraviolet protection and self-cleaning performance were investigated. Results showed that the dispersion stability of modified BiVO 4 was improved, and cotton fabric loaded with modified BiVO 4 possessed commendable ultraviolet protection and self-cleaning activities. The modified BiVO 4 with mole ratio of ATAC and AGE at 3:2 had the optimized dispersion stability, and the cotton fabric loaded with it featured the best ultraviolet protection and self-cleaning properties. The possible mechanism and reactions for the binding of BiVO 4 with cotton fabrics was proposed.

Photoelectrochemical generation of reactive chlorine species (PEC-RCS) is a promising approach for wastewater treatment . However, the inevitable byproduct of harmful oxychloride (such as ClO 3 − and ClO 4 − ) severely limits the practical applications of full-spectrum solar-driven PEC-RCS systems. Herein, we investigated three typical photoelectrodes including TiO 2 , WO 3 and BiVO 4 for PEC-RCS system and the formation of RCS and toxic oxychlorides. In BiVO 4 photoelectrochemical cell, the concentration of ClO 3 − was lower than 0.2 mg/L and the ClO 4 − was undetectable within 2 h of reaction. In contrast, the concentrations of ClO 3 − were 2.3 mg/L and 2.7 mg/L in the widely used WO 3 and TiO 2 PEC-RCS processes, respectively, which exceeded the health standard of 0.7 mg/L raised by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). We proposed that the valence band dependent photoelectrochemical properties of BiVO 4 photoelectrodes could lead to the restricted HO· radical production and the non-HO·-mediated RCS generation, which synergistically inhibited the ClO 3 − formation in the RCS activation process.

Non-biodegradable and toxic photocatalysts pose as secondary threats to the environmental security. In this work, non-toxic biocomposites were prepared using natural bamboo cellulose fibers (CF), polyvinyl alcohols (PVAs), BiVO 4 , and carbon dots (CDs) from biomaterials. Thereafter, their optical properties, chemical characterizations, and photocatalytic performances were evaluated. The novel BiVO 4 (-)CF@CDs(-)PVA composites were prepared via the combined implementation of in situ and impregnation methods. The optical properties revealed that the CDs and fibers increased the range and intensity of light absorption. The PVAs were used as the shield and dispersant to enhance stability because they have numerous chemical groups. In view of the various possible paths of electron migration, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of BiVO 4 (-)CF@CDs(-)PVA composites for tetracycline degradation was observed under visible light illumination. The origins of the structure, morphology, and optical mechanism in the enhancement of the photocatalytic ability of BiVO 4 (-)CF@CDs(-)PVA composites were discussed and demonstrated.

Monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO4), as a rising star in light-catching materials, has been researched in many fields, such as photoelectrochemical water splitting. To date, it is still noteworthy that the photogenerated electron–hole fast recombination and the slow kinetic rate impede the photoelectrochemical performance of BiVO4. Herein, a composite material of graphene oxide (GO) and molecular Cu porphyrin (CuTCPP)-modified BiVO4-based photoanode was prepared and characterized by various relevant physical tests. The photoelectrochemical performance measurements show that the assembled CuTCPP/GO/BiVO4 photoanode has an admirable photocurrent density value, which is far better than that of pristine BiVO4. Under AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm−2 Xe lamp, the photocurrent density of the CuTCPP/GO/BiVO4 photoanode reached 5.0 mA cm−2, which was 4-fold enhancement than that of pristine BiVO4. In addition, the optimized CuTCPP/GO/BiVO4 photoanode displays an evident negative shift of the onset potential of around 400 mV, and it presents a fascinating charge injection efficiency of 92%. The fine photoelectrochemical performance is due to more active sites provided by the molecular catalyst CuTCPP and excellent electrical conductivity and fast charge separation rate offered by GO. Furthermore, GO and CuTCPP form strong conjugate systems, which effectively inhibit the photogenerated electron–hole recombination. These results offer a new concept of assembling a composite photoanode for efficient energy devices.

Constructing a heterojunction photoelectrode is an effective way to promote the photogenerated charge separation in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. In this work, we successfully fabricated C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 hybrid electrodes by integrating g-C 3 N 4 onto the nanoporous BiVO 4 via a simple in-situ synthesis method. The as-prepared C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 photoanodes were systematically studied by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, steady-state surface photovoltage (SPV), transient SPV, Open circuit potential and Photoluminescence measurements. With an optimal loading of g-C 3 N 4 , the 2-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 electrode showed a high photocurrent density of 4.06 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE) for water oxidation, a 2.8 times enhancement over that of the BiVO 4 . It is found that g-C 3 N 4 improved the PEC performance of the photoanodes by simultaneously promoting the charge separation and surface reaction kinetics. When a NiOOH co-catalyst was immobilized onto the 2-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 electrode, both the PEC property and stability of the photoanode were enhanced. An extremely high photocurrent density of 5.44 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V was achieved. The largest half-cell solar energy conversion efficiency for NiOOH/2-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 was 1.43% at 0.78 V, corresponding to 8.4 times that of unmodified BiVO 4 (0.17% at 0.97 V). This work brings new insight into the development of C 3 N 4 -based devices for application in solar to fuel conversion.

In this work, we reported the photocurrent switching effect on BiVO 4 semiconductor as well as its application for construction of a new cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor. Specifically, the photocurrent switching effect of BiVO 4 upon fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrate was greatly dependent on its treatment temperature and composition of solution in the cell. The photocurrent transition potential from anode to cathode is ~ 0.38 V (vs SCE) in the presence of O 2 . H 2 O 2 can act as electron acceptor to improve cathodic PEC current at electrode treated under 500 °C. A cathodic PEC biosensor of glucose was designed based on glucose oxidase (GOD). The GOD/BiVO 4 /FTO photoelectrode exhibited high sensitivity towards the enzyme reaction production of H 2 O 2 . This PEC biosensor shows a good response on the concentration of glucose and exhibits a dynamic range of 1~400 μM with a detection limit of 0.73 μM. Interference from oxygen fluctuation was negligible. The present work provides a promising approach to develop other oxidase-based PEC biosensors.

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 , BVO) is an ideal photoabsorber for the photoelectrocatalytic water splitting, but its performance and photostability limit its commercial application. Therefore, enhancing the catalytic performance and stability becomes an increasingly crucial issue. In this study, we report a composite catalytic material poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, EDOT) (PEDOT)-modified β-FeOOH nanosheets loading onto the surface of BVO through the hydrolysis of Fe 3+ in BVO semiconductor film and the catalytic polymerization of EDOT form the conductive polymer. The structure facilitates the catalytic process, and when it is used in photoelectrocatalysis oxygen evolution reaction, it exhibits a photocurrent density of 3.3 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V versus standard hydrogen electrodes. Mechanistic studies show that the introduction of PEDOT-modified β-FeOOH optimized the electrode/electrolyte contact interface, adjusted the defect state, and provided catalytically active sites during the catalytic process. This study provides a feasible idea for exploring the catalytic mechanism of BVO-based photoelectrode and designing catalysts.

Severe charge recombination and poor surface water oxidation kinetics are key restrictions of BiVO 4 photoanode for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. In order to overcome this issue, we introduce Co@β-cyclodextrin (Co@β-CD) supramolecule as oxidation evolution catalyst (OEC) into BiVO 4 photoanode for the first time via a facile two-step immersion method. The optimal Co@β-CD/BiVO 4 photoanode displays a remarkable photocurrent density of 5.3 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE , which is ca. 3.5 times as high as that of pristine BiVO 4 photoanode. Further analyses indicate that photogenerated holes could quickly transfer from BiVO 4 to Co sites through β-CD, thereby suppressing charge recombination. Moreover, due to the spatial confinement effect of β-CD, the dispersed Co sites in Co@β-CD are considered to possess the high catalytic activity in similar with single-atom catalyst, which accelerates the surface water oxidation kinetics. This work not only demonstrates the superiority of supramolecule/semiconductor composite photoanode, but also provides a facile preparation route for the large-scale preparation of high-performance photoanodes.

The design of photoanode materials to achieve efficient water splitting is a current research hotspot in photoelectrochemical (PEC). In this work, we designed and prepared an α-Fe 2 O 3 /BiVO 4 heterostructure modified by carbon quantum dots ((α-Fe 2 O 3 /BiVO 4 /CQDs)) as the photoanode. The modification of CQDs can broaden the sunlight absorption ability and dramatically enhance the water oxidation kinetics of α-Fe 2 O 3 /BiVO 4 /CQDs. The optimized photoanode demonstrated a photocurrent density of 1.32 mA·cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is 2.2 times than pristine α-Fe 2 O 3 (0.6 mA·cm −2 ) photoanode. The IPCE value above 29.4 % at 400 nm, and the onset potential is negatively shifted by 243 mV for α-Fe 2 O 3 /BiVO 4 /CQDs. The improved performance is mainly due to the α-Fe 2 O 3 /BiVO 4 heterojunction to achieve effective separation of photogenerated carriers in the bulk phase and CQDs to improve light utilisation and OER kinetics of the photoanode.

In the present study, BiVO4sample was prepared under different pH 0.5–13 without capping agent. Different morphology characteristics were observed, such as sheet crystal structure, cross crystal structure and branching crystal structure. The mechanism of the formation of BiVO4nanostructure was discussed. Under acid condition, sheet crystal structure was obtained. The phenomenon could be attributed to polymerization of vanadate in the presence of H+. In the weak alkaline solution, across structure and branching type morphology was obtained. The photocatalytic efficiency for the samples ranked as pH 5 > pH 3 > pH 7 > pH 9 > pH 1 > pH 11 > pH 13 > blank, which is in good agreement with X-ray diffraction (XRD) result.E. colienvelop was damaged in the presence of BiVO4under visible light. The protrusion on envelop was diminished by BiVO4. BACKGROUND As a super stable zirconium based metal-organic framework, Zr 6 (OH) 4 (C 8 H 6 O 4 ) 6 (UiO-66) is considered a competitive candidate to conjugate with photocatalyst to enhance photocatalytic activity. In this study, highly dispersed bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) nanoparticles grown in situ upon the surfaces of UiO-66 were synthesized through a simple method, and the photocatalytic activities were investigated by measuring the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. RESULTS The results show that UiO-66@BiVO 4 composite with Bi:Zr molar ratio of (1:1) was the optimum hybrid and exhibited much higher photocatalytic activities than that of pure BiVO 4 . Furthermore, the photocatalyitc mechanism of RhB degradation by UiO-66@BiVO 4 was also investigated, the photodegradation of RhB was mainly caused by the super oxide ions ( · O 2 − ). The lone pair electrons of surface group –OH and –COOH of UiO-66 attract the photogenerated holes (h + ), which effectively prevent the recombination of electrons and holes. CONCLUSIONS The enhanced separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs through interfaces between BiVO 4 and UiO-66 led to improvement of the photocatalytic activity. The study showed a degradation mechanism for RhB wasterwater treatment. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a promising candidate as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst in the aspect of practical applications. To investigate the origin of active species from BiVO4 and understand the influence of the variations of the photocatalytic process, comparative studies on zero-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dot (NGQD)-decorated BiVO4 have been carried out for methylene blue photodegradation. It was found that the hydroxyl group-rich NGQD surface and the established heterojunction structure between NGQDs and BiVO4 were greatly beneficial for the conversion of the •OH radical. With NGQD decoration, the dominant oxidant species for NGQDs/BiVO4 were confirmed to be •OH and H2O2, rather than holes originating from the valence band of unmodified BiVO4. The synergistic photocatalytic mechanism with respect to the interfacial charge transport and the conversion of active species was proposed. The achievement of the controllable active species significantly altering the activity may be applied for different photocatalytic reactions.
