The gut-liver axis and TLR4/NF-κB pathway mediate Cu/Cd-induced hepatotoxicity in largemouth bass

Xiaofei Yang,Mingyue Qiao,Yan Deng,Songsong Chen,Cheng Li,Yuanke Shu,Li Jiang

Heavy metal pollution, particularly copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd), poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems due to its toxicity and bioaccumulation potential. This study investigated the effects of individual and combined exposure to Cu and Cd on largemouth bass, focusing on the gut–liver axis and the TLR4/NF-κB pathway in hepatotoxicity. A total of 480 size-matched fish were randomly assigned to four groups (Control, Cu, Cd, and Cu + Cd) and exposed to sublethal concentrations of CuSO₄ (9.275 mg/L) and CdCl₂·2.5H₂O (1.15285 mg/L) for 14 days, followed by physiological, molecular, and omics analyses. Results showed that both single and combined exposures disrupted intestinal structure and barrier function, accompanied by downregulation of tight junction genes. Oxidative stress responses were tissue-specific, with increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and MDA levels in the intestine but decreased levels in the liver, along with suppressed antioxidant enzyme activities. Inflammatory responses were activated, as indicated by elevated cytokine levels and upregulation of TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling in the liver. Microbiota analysis revealed that Cd exposure increased gut microbial diversity, whereas Cu + Cd co-exposure reduced α-diversity and altered microbial composition, with increased Proteobacteria and decreased beneficial taxa such as Bacteroidota and Firmicutes. Untargeted metabolomics showed that hepatic metabolic profiles were altered, mainly affecting lipid, energy, and immune-related pathways. Overall, combined Cu + Cd exposure exerted stronger toxic effects than single exposures, inducing more severe intestinal damage, microbial dysbiosis, and metabolic disturbances. These findings highlight the critical role of the gut–liver axis in mediating heavy metal toxicity.

Kinetics and mechanisms of the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) onto ETS-10

Nguyen Quang Tu Le,Van-Hien Pham,Bich-Ngoc Duong,Duy-Khoi Nguyen,Thi-Phuong-Tu Nguyen,Thien-Hoang Ho,Ngoc-Quyen Tran,Van-Phuc Dinh

Highly crystalline ETS-10 zeolite was prepared with a surface area of 250 m 2 /g and an average pore size of 1.67 nm. • Adsorption was highly pH-dependent, reaching peak efficiency at pH 5.0 for Pb(II) and pH 6.0 for both Cu(II) and Cd(II). • The Sips model best described the adsorption without being limited by concentration. • The adsorption kinetic of Pb(II) follows the PSO model, whereas the ID model controls the removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II). • The removal of Pb, Cu, Cd occurred via stoichiometric Na+/K+ ion exchange within 12-membered rings and surface complexation. Understanding adsorption kinetics and mechanisms play an instrumental role to determine the speed, efficiency, and pathways by which adsorbents remove pollutants. In this study, kinetics and mechanisms of the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) onto ETS-10 are investigated based on the combination of experimental, theoretical models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Sips, Pseudo-First-Order (PFO), Pseudo-Second-Order (PSO), Intraparticle diffusion (ID)), and modern analytical techniques (XRD, SEM-EDX, FT-IR and BET-BJH). Obtained results show that Sips models give the best fit with experimental data for three ions, while kinetic of Pb(II) adsorption follows PSO and kinetics of Cu(II) and Cd(II) uptakes follow ID models. The adsorption rates of Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Cu(II) during the diffusion process on the surface, whereas the ones of Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II) in the intraparticle diffusion process. The mechanisms of intraparticle diffusion, ion-exchange and complexion play mainly roles in the removal of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II). Novel ZIF-67/BC/β-CD bio-based nanocomposite for sustainable removal of tetracycline from polluted water

Eltaweil Abdelazeem S.,Alzain Rania,Fawzy Manal,El-Monaem Eman M. Abd,Elmaghrabi Nourhan

Antibiotic pollution poses significant ecological and human health risks in aquatic environments, making their removal an urgent environmental challenge. This study presents the development of an eco-friendly and efficient adsorbent fabricated from Hyphaene thebaica plant biochar along with Zeolitic imidazolate framework and Beta-cyclodextrin (ZIF-67/BC-β-CD). The fabricated ZIF-67/BC-β-CD nanocomposite demonstrates remarkable mechanical, thermal, and chemical stability as confirmed via different characterization techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, zeta potential, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To examine the adsorption ability and optimize the performance of ZIF-67/BC-β-CD nanocomposite, a series of adsorption experiments of tetracycline (TC) were conducted. Results revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of ZIF-67/BC-β-CD nanocomposite for TC is 294.11 mg.g − 1 at 25 ℃ and pH 5. The findings clarified that the process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics model with a good fit to the Freundlich isotherm, rather than the Langmuir isotherm, suggesting a combination of physical and chemical adsorption. The adsorption of TC onto ZIF-67/BC-β-CD was found to be governed by a combination of physisorption (electrostatic, hydrophobic, and π–π interactions) and chemisorption (hydrogen bonding and n–π electron donor–acceptor interactions). Furthermore, the adsorbent demonstrated significant regeneration potential after five successive cycles, proving its potential to be used as a sustainable and efficient adsorbent for treating water contaminated with antibiotics.

Efficient Sequestration and Sensitive Detection of Cd(II) in Food Using COF-LZU1: Performance, Modeling, and Mechanism

Pang Jing,Meng Fangyuhe,Song Yiyun,Yu Hongmei,Chen Guosong,Liu Chang

A two-dimensional imine-linked covalent organic framework, designated as COF-LZU1, was employed as a high-performance solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for the preconcentration of trace Cd(II) from complex food matrices. Systematic investigations of adsorption kinetics and isotherms revealed that Cd(II) uptake follows a pseudo-second-order model and aligns with the Langmuir isotherm, indicating a monolayer chemisorption process. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity reached 114.94 mg g −1 , demonstrating highly competitive performance against traditional adsorbents. Structural and spectroscopic characterizations (SEM–EDS, BET, FT-IR, XPS, and XRD) before and after adsorption confirmed that the robust performance of COF-LZU1 originates from its high specific surface area and abundant nucleophilic imine linkages (-C = N-), which serve as primary coordination sites. Supported by the Hard and Soft Acids and Bases and density functional theory simulations, the adsorption mechanism involves a synergistic interplay of electrostatic attraction, chelation, and the channel effect. Under optimized conditions, the integrated SPE-GFAAS platform achieved a highly sensitive limit of detection (3.34 ng L −1 ) and excellent precision (RSD = 1.0%). The methodology was validated using certified reference materials and real food samples, yielding excellent recoveries (94.0–104.0%). These findings underscore the significant potential of COFs-LZU1 as specialized scaffolds for the robust enrichment and quantification of trace heavy metals in food safety applications. Graphical A novel two-dimensional imine-linked covalent organic framework, designated as COF-LZU1, was initially employed in a solid-phase extraction system to adsorb trace amounts of Cd(II) from food samples. The adsorption process is identified as a sophisticated multi-step mechanism: initially, Cd(II) ions are attracted to the vicinity of the nitrogen-rich binding sites via electrostatic forces; subsequently, they migrate into the interior pores through the channel effect and are ultimately anchored via strong coordination-chelation with the imine linkages. This study underscores the potential of COF-LZU1 as a high-performance and selective platform for the separation and detection of Cd(II) in complex food matrices.

Highly Bright Silicon Nanocrystal White Light-Emitting Diodes With Luminance in Excess of 10000 cd m⁻2

Fengyang Ma,Kaixin Liu,Zhongyao Yan,Liang Yu,Yanru Yang,Wuyan Zhao,Feilong Wang,Yaohua Li,Shuyu Zhang,Songyou Wang,Jian Sun,Ming Lu

Silicon (Si) light source has profound significance in monolithic integrated Si photonics. However, its luminance remains too low to meet practical use that usually requires > 10000 cd m⁻ 2 . Here, an all-inorganic Si nanocrystal (SiNC) white light-emitting diode (WLED) with a continuous emission spectrum spanning ≈400–900 nm in wavelength, is reported. The architecture of the WLED comprises front electrode of Ag grids and transparent-conducting-oxide/electron transport layer (ETL) of ZnO/front charge confinement layer (CCL) of SiO 2 /active layer of low-resistivity SiNC composite thin film/rear CCL of SiO 2 /hole transport layer (HTL) of MoO 3 /textured p-Si substrate/rear electrode of aluminum/heat radiator. The main procedures for achieving high luminance here include combined applications of high-pressure ammonia passivation of the active layer, which enhances its photoluminescence quantum yield significantly, and texturing of p-Si substrate, which boosts the light extraction and charge injection effectively. With an optimized combination of passivation and texturing, luminance of 10751 cd m⁻ 2 is achieved with external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.26%. After a Peltier cooler is further applied, luminance of 12363 cd m⁻ 2 is attained with EQE of 0.30%. Following further technical iterations, this highly bright SiNC WLED shall find applications in monolithic integrated Si photonics and even Si general lighting.

Cd migration in water-level fluctuation zones of Three Gorges reservoir: Interactions of periphytic biofilms and tryptophan

Ting Liu,Mengting Xiao,Rongshan Du,Meng Li,Xinyi Li,Ying Xi,Yuanfei Lv,Honglin Liu,Yingping Huang,Tao Xu

Periphytic biofilms (PBs) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) are key factors affecting the migration of Cd at the “water-sediment” interface. However, the specific effects of PBs and protein-like components of DOM on Cd migration within the “water-biofilm-sediment” system remain poorly understood. This study simulates the dissolution and re-immobilization of Cd at the “water-biofilm-sediment” interface in the water-level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), aiming to clarify the role of PBs in Cd stability. The results indicate that the concentration of dissolved Cd increased by 0.96-fold (R 2  = 0.992) with each doubling of L-tryptophan (L-Trp) concentration, as the functional groups of L-Trp ( COOH and NH) formed complexes with Fe-Mn oxide-bound Cd in the sediment. In the presence of PBs and at an L-Trp concentration of 150 mg·L −1 , PBs utilized L-Trp, resulting in a 16.7 % reduction in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) ( p  < 0.05) and an increase in protein content. Additionally, PBs contributed to a 35.12 % reduction in the peak concentration of dissolved Cd, thereby stabilizing the final Cd levels. Cd enrichment within PBs, facilitated by functional groups such as >C C<, OH, >C O, and C O , led to a significant increase in Cd content (0.43 mg·kg −1 , p  < 0.05). These findings suggest that L-Trp degradation and Cd enrichment by PBs act synergistically to promote the re-immobilization of dissolved Cd. This study offers a novel perspective on Cd migration in WLFZs and provides insights that may be applicable to other aquatic environments where PBs are present.

Facilitated transport of Cd(II) by plasma-modified microplastics: Influence of surface functional groups and interaction mechanisms

Yantian Ji,Duo Xu,Shuangyun Bai,Bowen Du,Hongyang Chen,Tiecheng Wang,Xianqiang Yin

Discharge plasma is gaining increasing attention in environmental science due to its advanced oxidative properties. While discharge plasma is capable of degrading most of the pollutants in contaminated water, it is not effective in degrading the accompanying microplastics (MPs). Notably, residual MPs in plasma-treated water may become carriers of other pollutants in the environment. The adsorption and co-transport behaviors of two MPs with Cd(II), before and after Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma treatment, were examined via batch and column experiments. The results showed that plasma-treated MPs exhibited significantly enhanced adsorption capacity for Cd(II), attributed to grafted polar functional groups on their surfaces. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the enhancement resulted from reduced steric hindrance, along with stronger hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions. Co-transport experiments revealed that plasma treatment significantly promoted the carrier role of MPs in facilitating Cd(II) transport. Specifically, plasma-treated MPs mitigated Cd(II) deposition at the column base under favorable conditions for transport. Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory provided a satisfactory explanation for the observed transport behaviors of plasma-treated MPs and Cd(II). These findings highlight the potential environmental risks posed by plasma-treated MPs as carriers of Cd(II) and the need for further studies on their long-term ecological impacts.

Self-healing mineralization and enhanced anti-corrosive performance of polyurethane CaCO3 composite film via β-CD induction

Yang Hua,Xueliang Li,Li Ma,Yihang Wang,Huagao Fang,Haibing Wei,Yunsheng Ding

A novel organic composite coating was successfully fabricated through in situ mineralizing in artificial seawater for a lasting anti-corrosive coating. The mineralized composite films make full use of the advantages including rich hydroxyl group and special ring structure of β-cyclodextrin as well as superior adhesion and high flexibility of waterborne polyurethane coating. The results show the β-CD remarkably promotes the mineralization of CaCO 3 on WPU substances through the effective adsorption and complexation of hydrophobic cavity to calcium ions. The dense organic-inorganic composite film exhibits outstanding anti-corrosive performance with corrosion rate of 1.39 × 10 −3  mm/year for 3CD-WPU sample, being much less than 7.36 × 10 −2  mm/year for WPU coating under same conditions. The excellent anti-corrosion performance is mainly attributed to the uniform nucleation site provided by CD-WPU and further formation of dense CaCO 3 film. Furthermore, the radial distribution function and adsorb energy theoretic analysis by molecular dynamic simulation definitely reveal and support the mechanism of β-CD promoting the CaCO 3 mineralization.

High-efficiency bifunctional M-doped NiSe/Ni3Se2 (M=Co, Fe, Cd) electrocatalysts for seawater and urea oxidation

Yinshuang Shao,Huipeng Zhao,Ji Wang,Xiaoshuang Zhang,Xiaoqiang Du

Electrocatalytic seawater splitting for generating H 2 has become one of the most promising methods. This study prepared M-NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 (M = Co, Fe, Cd) electrocatalysts through a one-step hydrothermal selenification reaction. In alkaline seawater, the Co–NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 electrode requires overpotentials of 273, 369, and 431 mV to drive current densities of 10, 50, and 100 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process, respectively. Moreover, the Co–NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 electrocatalyst needs only potential of 1.395 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) process. According to density functional theory result, the synergistic effect between the large H 2 O adsorption capacity of Co–NiSe and the superior electrical conductivity of Ni 3 Se 2 is a key factor for contributing to the superior performance of the Co–NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 catalyst. This study conducted systematic doping comparison experiments on the NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 system, providing authentic and reliable experimental support for the design of selenide electrocatalysts.

Simultaneous adsorption of Cd(II) and degradation of OTC by activated biochar with ferrate: Efficiency and mechanism

Haoran Tian,Shuchuan Peng,Lu Zhao,Yihan Chen,Kangping Cui

Biochar-supported zero-valent iron nanocomposites have received much attention due to their application potential in environmental pollution remediation. However, in many occasions, zero-valent iron loading improves the electron transfer efficiency and catalytic oxidation capacity of biochar while blocking the original pore structure of biochar, limiting its application potential. In this study, a zero-valent iron composites with large SSA (865.86 m 2 /g) was prepared in one step using pre-pyrolysis of biochar powder and K 2 FeO 4 grinding for co-pyrolysis. The processes of ZVI generation and SSA expansion during the pyrolysis were investigated. The factors affecting the removal process of Cd and OTC in water by the composites were investigated. The mechanisms of Cd fixation and OTC degradation by the composites were explored by experiments, characterization, and DFT calculations. The OTC degradation pathway was proposed by theoretical predication and LC-MS spectrometry . The results indicate that ion exchange, complexation with oxygen-containing functional groups, electrostatic attraction, and interaction with π-electrons are the main mechanisms of Cd immobilization. The degradation pathways of OTC mainly include dehydroxylation , deamination and dealkylation.

Robust CsPbBr3 and Zn-Cd-S quantum dots co-doped nano-glass composites with broadly tunable emissions

Zexuan Sui,Yan Sun,Yue Jing,Ci Wang,Yao Zhu,Sen Qian,Jing Ren,Jianzhong Zhang

We report the first study on in-situ co-growth of biphasic CsPbBr 3 and Zn-Cd-S quantum dots (QDs) in borosilicate glass , and provide explicitly evidence of their morphology and nanoscale distribution. Such biphasic QDs co-doped nano-glass composites show unique green and red dual-band emissions. By changing the thermal heating scheme, the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) and thus the apparent color can be widely adjusted. The FIR can be also fine-tuned simply by varying the excitation wavelength. Based on the FIR, a self-calibrated X-rays dosimeter is constructed, which also possesses a good thermal stability. Although the X-rays induced scintillation weakening occurs, it can be readily recovered by post-thermal-annealing.

Preparation and study of cellulose-based ZnO NPs@HEC/C-β-CD/Menthol hydrogel as wound dressing

Lihui Jiang,Yuheng Han,Juan Xu,Ting Wang

A cellulose-based hydrogel with synergistic therapeutic effect was prepared by a one-pot method. The hydrogel had hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) as a framework and epichlorohydrin (EPI) as a cross-linking agent. Cationic-β-cyclodextrin (C-β-CD) was homogeneously embedded in the grid of the cross-linked structure. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and menthol were used to provide analgesic and bactericidal effects . Menthol was uniformly loaded onto the hydrogel matrix by the addition of C-β-CD and increased the solubility of menthol in water. ZnO NPs were synthesized by in situ hydrothermal treatment . The positively charged group of C-β-CD and the active hydroxyl group of HEC were used to distribute the ZnO NPs uniformly on the hydrogel matrix without significant agglomeration. The hydrogel had a smoothly ordered and compact morphology. It exhibited adequate mechanical, swelling, water retention and oxygen permeability properties in tests. In addition, the hydrogel had an efficient bactericidal effect. Release experiments showed that the encapsulation of menthol by C-β-CD allowed for a slow release of menthol. Biocompatibility tests had shown that the hydrogel was non-toxic to normal human cells.
