Design and preparation of high performance photocatalysts are always the keys for photocatalytic hydrogen production by using green and unlimited solar energy. In this work, we present the synthesis of Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) decorated CdS nanorods and their use for visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production. The as-synthesized CZTS decorated CdS nanorods exhibit much higher visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production performance than that of individual CdS nanorods and individual CZTS nanoparticles . Specifically, the hydrogen production rate of representative CZTS decorated CdS nanorods was 48-times and 165-times higher than that of individual CdS nanorods and individual CZTS nanoparticles. The enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production performance may be contributed by the p-n heterojunction as well as the synergistic effect between CdS nanorods and CZTS particles. The present work not only reported new low-cost and highly efficient photocatalysts for visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production, but also provided new method for the design and preparation of high performance visible-light-driven heterostructured photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

NaYF4:Yb,Tm upconversion nanocrystals with hexagonal structure possess excellent photoluminescence emission characteristics. Under near infrared (NIR) light irradiation, the Yb3+ ions act as sensitizers to absorb the NIR light and transform NIR light into ultraviolet (UV) and visible (Vis) light continuously. Hybrid NIR-activated photocatalysts can be fabricated by combining upconversion nanocrystals with various semiconductor nanocrystals. In this paper, NaYF4:Yb,Tm micro-rods were hydrothermally synthesized with oleic acid as capping ligand. The NaYF4:Yb,Tm@CdS composite was fabricated by in situ generation of CdS nanoclusters on the surface of NaYF4:Yb,Tm micro-rods. The morphologies and structures of NaY4:Yb,Tm and NaYF4:Yb,Tm@CdS were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-Vis and PL spectroscopy. The results of photocatalytic experiments indicated that the NaYF4:Yb,Tm@CdS composite displayed photocatalytic activity under NIR irradiation. In comparison with pure CdS, the photocatalytic ability of NaYF4:Yb,Tm@CdS composite under Vis-NIR irradiation was obviously enhanced. 82% of RhB was degraded by NaYF4:Yb,Tm@CdS catalyst within 75 min under Vis-NIR irradiation, which was more effective than pure CdS (65% degradation of RhB).

Efficient production of hydrogen through visible-light-driven water splitting mechanism using semiconductor-based composites has been identified as a promising strategy for converting light into clean H 2 fuel. However, researchers are facing lots of challenges such as light absorption and electron-hole pair recombination and so on. Here, new sheet-shaped MoS 2 and pyramid-shaped CdS in-situ co-grown on porous TiO 2 photocatalysts (MoS 2 CdS TiO 2 ) are successfully obtained via mild sulfuration of MoO 3 and CdO coexisted inside porous TiO 2 monolith by a hydrothermal route. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results exhibit that the MoS 2 CdS TiO 2 composites have average pore size about 500 nm. The 3%MoS 2 10%CdS TiO 2 demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activity and high stability for a hydrogen production with a high H 2 -generation rate of 4146 μmol h −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation even without noble-metal co-catalysts. The super photocatalytic performance of the visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution is predominantly attributed to the synergistic effect . The conduction band of MoS 2 facilitates in transporting excited electrons from visible-light on CdS to the porous TiO 2 for catalytic hydrogen production, and holes to MoS 2 for inhibiting the photocorrosion of CdS, respectively, leading to enhancing the efficient separation of electrons and holes.

Abstract 2D Bi 2 S 3 /CdS nanosheet arrays have been constructed by a simple three-step method. Firstly, BiOI nanosheet arrays have been electrochemically grown on the surface of conductive FTO substrate and then converted into Bi 2 S 3 nanosheet arrays by ion exchange. Finally, CdS was hydrothermally deposited onto the surface of Bi 2 S 3 nanosheet arrays to form hybrid Bi 2 S 3 /CdS nanosheet arrays. The obtained hybrid heterojunction arrays have been used as photoanodes for photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution and showed enhanced performance and prolonged stability. The photocurrent density of the elegant Bi 2 S 3 /CdS nanosheet arrays reaches 9.48 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V RHE under an illumination of 100 mW/cm 2 from AM 1.5G sun simulator, which is more than ten times higher than that of the pure Bi 2 S 3 nanosheet arrays and the photocurrent density does not decline obviously after 4 h of continuous operation. Ultimately, a rational mechanism is proposed to elucidate the high performance and excellent stability of Bi 2 S 3 /CdS nanosheet arrays for photoelectrochemical cells. Graphic Abstract To obtain nanosheet arrays : Arrays of Bi 2 S 3 /CdS nanosheets on a FTO substrate are synthesized by electrodeposition, ion exchange and hydrothermal process. The Bi 2 S 3 /CdS nanosheet photoanodes show better photoactive and photostability compared to bare Bi 2 S 3 (CdS) nanosheets for photoelectrochemical splitting of water.

Both microwave and conventional oil bath heating approaches are investigated for the fabrication of CdS nanocrystals through the thermolysis of a single source precursor cadmium diethyldithiocarbamate (CED), which allows us to gain further insight into the thermodynamic aspect of the synthesis. The analysis illustrates that nearly monodispersed sea-urchin-shaped CdS nanocrystals are obtained with the microwave method, whereas nanospheres covered by chunky protuberances are achieved with an oil bath approach. Such experiments suggest that microwave heating facilitates the growth of CdS along the [002] direction. In addition, we explored the catalytic activity of CdS in the photodegradation of rhodamine B, in which the CdS prepared through a microwave approach greatly outperformed that prepared through oil bath heating and the commercial CdS nanoparticles. Such enhancement arises from the higher specific surface area and crystallinity of the sea-urchin-shaped nanocrystals.

In this work, blue-light-emitting carbon dots (CDs) were composited with red-light-emitting europium ions (Eu 3+ ) solutions under the synergistic reaction of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare the light conversion film. The formation mechanism of Eu 3+ /CDs/PVA film was detailedly discussed. It is the first report that this composite was synthesized through direct recombination of CDs and Eu 3+ solutions instead of traditional methods based on Eu 3+ coordination compound. Furthermore, tunable photoluminescence property can be successfully achieved by controlling the ratio of CDs to doped Eu 3+ , this property can meet the variable light component requirements for different species of plants.

The influence of multi-walled carbon nanotube (i.e. MWCNT) architectures for facilitating charge transport in CdS semiconductor films was investigated. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the CdS nanoparticle-deposited multi-walled carbon nanotube nanohybrids (i.e. CdS@MWCNT) could be enhanced when the MWCNT was employed as the conducting scaffold in the CdS nanoparticle based photoelectrochemical cell. The CdS nanoparticles were deposited onto the MWCNT surface to improve photoinduced charge separation and transport of carriers (electrons and holes). The PCE of the CdS@MWCNT nanohybrids solar cell was found to be as high as 4.54%, contrasting sharply with the value (1.67%) for pure CdS nanoparticles. The outcome of the present work might provide a new avenue for designing optoelectronic and light-energy conversion devices.

We report the well-controlled preparation of WS 2 nanosheets–CdS nanoparticle heterojunction for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting application. The WS 2 nanosheets with an average thickness of ~5 nm and lateral dimensions of ~200 nm were synthesized via liquid phase exfoliation of bulk WS 2 in water/ethanol solution, followed by deposition onto ITO substrate via electrophoretic method. CdS nanoparticles were grown via facile successive ion layer absorption and reaction (SILAR) method. Using these two well-controlled methods, CdS/WS 2 /ITO and WS 2 /CdS/ITO systems were fabricated. The loading of WS 2 nanosheets was controlled by the deposition condition and the heterojunction was optimized for enhanced photoelectrochemical response under simulated sunlight irradiation. The fabricated electrodes were characterized by various analytical techniques as well as PEC response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Our results showed that the CdS/WS 2 /ITO heterojunction exhibits a stable photo-current density which is 3 times higher than the CdS/ITO electrode. In contrast, photo-current density of the WS 2 /CdS/ITO electrode was lower than that of the bare CdS/ITO, indicating that an appropriate energy level cascade is essential for achieving enhanced PEC response. A charge transfer mechanism was proposed to explain the observed PEC enhancement. This work indicates that the exfoliated WS 2 nanosheet is a promising material for stable photoelectrochemical applications.

In this paper, CdS/TiO 2 heteronanofibers have been prepared for the photocatalysis toward organic dyes under visible irradiation. Firstly, the one dimensional (1D) TiO 2 porous nanofibers (50–100) nm in diameter and several micrometers in length were synthesized by electrospinning and then CdS nanopaticles (50–100 nm in size) successfully grown onto TiO 2 fibers to form the heterostructure . These CdS/TiO 2 heteronanofibers were adopted as photocatalyst and the photocatalsis processes were analyzed in detail, showing the enhanced visible photodecomposition and good recycle ability. Furthermore, the degradation kinetics was further investigated by varying the amount of CdS. The increase of CdS component may enhance the degradation rate under visible light , but the total degradation efficiency also is affected by the adsorption capacity of catalyst toward the dyes. With the improved visible light degradation performance, these CdS/TiO 2 heteronanofibers would be expected to be used in water purification .

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for highly sensitive and specific detection of thrombin was developed by using graphene–CdS nanocomposites multilayer as photoactive species and electroactive mediator hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride ( Ru NH 3 6 3 + ) as signal enhancer. Graphene–CdS nanocomposites (G–CdS) were synthesized by one-pot reduction of oxide graphene and CdCl 2 with thioacetamide . The photoactive multilayer was prepared by alternative assembly of the negatively charged 3-mercaptopropionic acid modified graphene–CdS nanocomposites (MPA-G–CdS) and the positively charged polyethylenimine (PEI) on ITO electrode. This layer-by-layer assembly method enhanced the stability and homogeneity of the photocurrent readout of G–CdS. Thrombin aptamer was covalently bound to the multilayer by using glutaraldehyde as cross-linking. Electroactive mediator Ru NH 3 6 3 + could interact with the DNA phosphate backbone and thus facilitated the electron transfer between G–CdS multilayer and electrode and enhanced the photocurrent. Hybridizing of a long complementary DNA with thrombin aptamer could increase the adsorption amount of Ru NH 3 6 3 + , which in turn boosted the signal readout. In the presence of target thrombin, the affinity interaction between thrombin and its aptamer resulted in the long complementary DNA releasing from the G–CdS multilayer and decreasing of photocurrent signal. On the basis of G–CdS multilayer as the photoactive species, Ru NH 3 6 3 + as an electroactive mediator, and aptamer as a recognition module, a high sensitive PEC aptasensor for thrombin detection was proposed. The thrombin aptasensor displayed a linear range from 2.0 pM to 600.0 pM and a detection limit of 1.0 pM. The present strategy provided a promising ideology for the future development of PEC biosensor.

SnO 2 nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrothermal method and applied to photo-electrodes of quantum dots-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). After sensitizing SnO 2 films via CdS quantum dots , CdSe quantum dots was decorated on the surface of CdS/SnO 2 photo-electrodes to further improve the power conversion efficiency. CdS and CdSe quantum dots were deposited by successive ionic layer absorption and reaction method (SILAR) and chemical bath deposition method (CBD) respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to identify the surface profile and crystal structure of SnO 2 photo-electrodes before and after deposited quantum dots. After CdSe co-sensitized process, an overall power conversion efficiency of 1.78% was obtained in CdSe/CdS/SnO 2 QDSSC, which showed 66.4% improvement than that of CdS/SnO 2 QDSSC.

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform was designed for catechol determination using CdS quantum dots (QDs), DNA and pristine graphene (PGR) nanocomposite film-modified electrode. In such a composite film-based PEC sensor, CdS QDs served as the photoelectric conversion element which produced photocurrent signal under visible light illumination; and DNA was designed as the biological recognition element which improved the PEC response of sensor toward catechol due to the interaction between DNA and catechol. To improve the electron transfer of the composite film, PGR with high electrical conductivity was doped, which significantly amplified the photocurrent signal of sensor. Based on such a CdS-DNA-PGR composite film-modified electrode, catechol showed a linear PEC response proportional to its concentration from 1.0 × 10 −8 to 1.0 × 10 −6 mol L −1 . The detection limit (3S/N) was estimated to be 4.9 × 10 −9 mol L −1 . The developed PEC sensor was successfully applied to determine trace catechol in water samples.
