Radiation-resilient ferroelectricity in Ce-doped HfO2 thin films under 60Co γ-ray irradiation

Xiaofei Xu,Yijie Wu,Yuan Li,Lixia Ouyang,Jie Jiang

Ce-doped HfO₂ thin films exhibited excellent γ-ray radiation tolerance. • Stable ferroelectric performance was maintained after γ-ray irradiation. • Ce doping stabilized the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase. • Radiation-induced defect accumulation and domain-wall pinning were suppressed. • Ce doping significantly improved electrical reliability. HfO 2 -based ferroelectric thin films have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation non-volatile memories operating in extreme environments owing to their excellent CMOS compatibility, scalability, and robust ferroelectricity. However, ionizing radiation induces oxygen vacancies and charge traps that deteriorate polarization stability and device reliability, while the relationship between radiation-induced defects and polarization switching kinetics remains insufficiently understood. In this work, Hf 0.85 Ce 0.15 O 2 (HCO) ferroelectric thin films were fabricated via a sol–gel process, and their structural evolution, domain-switching kinetics, and memory reliability were systematically investigated under 60 Co γ-ray total ionizing dose (TID) irradiation ranging from 0 to 1000 krad(Si). The HCO films maintained a stable ferroelectric phase after irradiation, with the remanent polarization ( P r ) exhibiting only a slight variation from 19.914 to 20.107 μC cm −2 and the coercive field ( E c ) increasing marginally from 1.418 to 1.465 MV cm −1 . Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) confirmed reversible domain switching throughout the irradiation process, while kinetic analysis based on the Merz model revealed that the activation field increased only from 9.49 to 10.07 MV cm −1 (≈6%), indicating that domain-wall mobility was well preserved. Moreover, the leakage current density remained within the order of 10 −10 –10 −8 A cm −2 , accompanied by excellent electrical reliability. XPS analysis revealed only limited changes in the Ce valence state and oxygen chemical environment after irradiation, consistent with the overall structural and ferroelectric stability of the films. Based on these results, the stable Ce–O coordination is proposed to help maintain local lattice stability and mitigate the influence of irradiation-induced perturbations on polarization switching. This work provides new insights into the radiation-stability mechanism of HfO 2 -based ferroelectrics and offers a promising strategy for the design of highly reliable ferroelectric memories for aerospace and nuclear electronics.

Hydrogen production from biomass via hydrothermal gasification using Ni–Ce catalysts supported on Kaolin

Zhi-qiang Wang,Sonil Nanda,Gong-xun Xu,Janusz A. Kozinski,Zhen Fang

Ni–Ce bimetallic material was supported on Kaolin by impregnation, calcination, and reduction for hydrothermal gasification of crop residues at 340–400 °C and 16–30 MPa. According to orthogonal experiments, the optimal reaction conditions were determined to be 380 °C, 5 min, 0.5 g cotton stalk and 0.5 g catalyst. H 2 yield was enhanced from 1.85 mmol/g to 21.82 mmol/g, with the specific surface area increasing from 4.74 m 2  g −1 (Bulk Ni) to 26.46 m 2  g −1 (Ni–Ce/c-Kaolin catalyst), indicating that Kaolin improved the dispersion of active Ni species. The bimetallic Ni–Ce synergy is reflected by broader reduction peaks of the Ni–Ce catalyst in H 2 -TPR. The variation of cerium valence states in XPS revealed that Ce is dynamically involved in oxygen transfer, promoting catalytic activity in coexisting Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ oxides. The Ni–Ce/c-Kaolin catalyst developed in this study provides an efficient route to hydrogen production from agricultural waste, thereby demonstrating its potential for high-value conversion of sustainable biomass resources.

Ce-Doped Smart Adsorbents with Photoresponsive Molecular Switches for Selective Adsorption and Efficient Desorption

Peng Tan,Yao Jiang,Shi-Chao Qi,Xia-Jun Gao,Xiao-Qin Liu,Lin-Bing Sun

Achieving efficient adsorption and desorption processes by controllably tuning the properties of adsorbents at different technical stages is extremely attractive. However, it is difficult for traditional adsorbents to reach the target because of their fixed active sites. Herein, we report on the fabrication of a smart adsorbent, which was achieved by introducing photoresponsive azobenzene derivatives with cis / trans isomers to Ce-doped mesoporous silica. These photoresponsive groups serve as “molecular switches” by sheltering and exposing active sites, leading to efficient adsorption and desorption. Ce is also doped to provide additional active sites in order to enhance the adsorption performance. The results show that the cis isomers effectively shelter the active sites, leading to the selective adsorption of methylene blue (MB) over brilliant blue (BB), while the trans isomers completely expose the active sites, resulting in the convenient release of the adsorbates. Both selective adsorption and efficient desorption can be realized controllably by these smart adsorbents through photostimulation. Moreover, the performance of the obtained materials is well maintained after five cycles.

Kan Hu,Dingchen Wang

The construction of efficient Z-scheme heterojunctions is considered as a promising approach to improve the transfer and separation of photogenerated carries in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water splitting. Herein, a novel CdS/UiO-66(Ce) with Z-scheme heterostructure is successfully fabricated from metal sulfide CdS and cerium-based UiO-66 metal–organic framework via a hydrothermal method. The Z-scheme CdS/UiO-66(Ce) heterojunctions can provide abundant active centers, broaden the response range to visible-light region, accelerate the transfer of interfacial charges, and suppress the recombination rate of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. As a result, CdS/UiO-66(Ce) (ω(CdS) = 30%) exhibits a hydrogen production rate of 1.975 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 19.1 times higher than that of UiO-66(Ce). Overall, this article may provide a new pathway for the rational design of efficient Z-scheme heterojunctions with photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Graphical The Z-scheme heterojunction is a pivotal design strategy in photocatalysis for balancing efficient charge separation and strong redox capability. In this article, a Z-scheme CdS/UiO-66(Ce) heterojunction is constructed by combining cerium-based metal–organic framework UiO-66(Ce) with CdS and achieved efficient photocatalytic water splitting for 1.975 mmol g −1 h −1 hydrogen evolution under visible light, which is 19.1 times higher than UiO-66(Ce).

Ce-doped ZnO@ZIF-8 core-shell nanotube mixed matrix membranes for CO2 separation

Xuebi Du,Huan Zeng,Qi Gao,Chen Li,Yin Quan,Lihua Chen,Shichao Feng,Yinhua Wan

In this study, the morphology of ZnO was altered from nanofibers to hollow nanotubes by Ce doping, mainly owing to the Kirkendall effect originating from different diffusion rates of constituent elements. A novel one-dimensional core-shell nanotube (ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8) was successfully fabricated, characterized by a distinctive structure comprising a ZIF-8 shell and a ZnO-CeO 2 nanotube core. The as-prepared ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8 exhibited a large specific surface area, substantial pore volume, and strong affinity towards CO 2 . These ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8 were integrated into Pebax-1657 to construct MMMs for high-efficiency CO 2 transport and separation. Furthermore, the unique 1D hollow structure of the filler effectively reduced the resistance to mass transfer and enhanced gas permeability, while the ZIF-8 shell and Ce-induced oxygen vacancies synergistically enhanced the CO 2 adsorption and selectivity. The Pebax/ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8 MMMs containing 3 wt% loading demonstrate superior performance, characterized by a CO 2 permeability of 94.0 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 64.8 respectively. Compared to the unmodified Pebax, these values exhibit enhancements of 73.4% and 36.7%, suggesting that ZnO-CeO 2 @ZIF-8 holds considerable promise in the realm of MMMs for adsorption and separation of CO 2 .

Promotion Effects of Ce-Doping on Catalytic Oxidation of Ethane over Pt/CexTi1−xO2

Dengmao Wu,Xianyan Lv,Xiurong Ren,Changming Hou,Qianwei Ma,Junxuan Yao,Jiangliang Hu

The catalytic oxidation of VOCs is widely acknowledged as the most available technology to reduce air pollution. Among the catalysts for VOCs, 1 wt%-Pt/TiO2catalysts using metal as a doping element have shown amazing potential in many fields. However, achieving high catalytic performance at relatively low temperatures based on the activation of molecules is still a formidable challenge owing to the catalytic activity being highly dependent on temperature. Here, the role of the rare earth metal Ce in the catalytic oxidation of ethane was studied by preparing Pt/CexTi1−xO2(x = 0, 0.002, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, and 0.05) catalysts. When the Ce/(Ce+Ti) molar ratio was 0.01, Pt/Ce0.01Ti0.99O2achieved 90% ethane conversion at 436 °C. This reaction temperature is 15% lower than that for Pt/TiO2. The characterization results show that the doping of Ce caused lattice expansion of TiO2and its distortion brought about by oxygen vacancies. Additionally, the appropriate amount of Ce-doping can alter the interaction between the active component Pt and the carrier TiO2, thereby improving the activity and concentration of the active surface lattice oxygen species of the catalyst. These results provide a foundation for the design of the catalytic oxidation of VOCs under mild operating conditions.Keywords:VOCs;Pt-based catalyst;catalyst carrier;catalysis;oxidation;Ce-doping

Morphology, Solid Structure and Antioxidant Activity in Vitro of Angelica sinensis Polysaccharide-Ce(IV)

Kaiwen Li,Jie Wang,Zizhen Huang,Chunxia Tan

Angelica Sinensis polysaccharide cerium (ASP−Ce) was prepared by Angelica Sinensis polysaccharide (ASP) and cerium ammonium nitrate (NH 4 ) 2 Ce(NO 3 ) 6 . and its morphology, and solid structure was investigated. The antioxidant activity of the ASP−Ce complex in vitro was evaluated. The antioxidant activity of ASP−Ce complex in vitro was evaluated by the scavenging activity of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhyrazyl radical (DPPH), hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) and superoxide anion radical ( ⋅). The results showed that the ASP−Ce had the more ordered structure for inserting the Ce 4+ into the polymer chain of ASP and there was little change in the conformation of the polysaccharide from Ce 4+ . Three free radical scavenging experiments proved that ASP−Ce had better antioxidant capacity than of ASP, especially on DPPH, and then on ⋅. The scavenging rate of ASP−Ce at 1.0 mg/mL on DPPH reached 71.6 %. Therefore, these results provide references for the further development and utilization of rare earth-polysaccharide.

Co-Precipitated Mn0.15Ce0.85O2−δ Catalysts for NO Oxidation: Manganese Precursors and Mn-Ce Interactions

Yuxi Gao,Baofang Jin,Xiaodong Wu,Zhenguo Li,Rui Ran,Duan Weng

Two Mn0.15Ce0.85O2−δmixed oxides were synthesized by a co-precipitation method using Mn(NO3)2and KMnO4as the manganese precursors, respectively. Structural analyses by X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal the formation of MnOx-CeO2solid solutions. The Mn0.15Ce0.85O2−δcatalyst prepared from the high-valent manganese precursor exhibits higher activity for the catalytic oxidation of NO. The advantage of KMnO4is related to the improved redox property of the catalyst as supported by H2temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and O2temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The Mn-Ce interactions create more Mn4+, Ce3+and oxygen vacancies on the KMnO4-synthesized mixed oxides based on the Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS).Keywords:solid solutions;precursor;oxidation state;lattice defects;NO oxidation

Catalytic ozonation of atenolol by Mn-Ce@Al2O3 catalysts: Efficiency, mechanism and degradation pathways

Qian Wang,Can He,Yue Shan,Zhongguo Zhang,Jiuyi Li

The aim of this study is to investigate the degradation efficiency and mechanism of atenolol (ATL) by catalytic ozonation with Al 2 O 3 supported manganese-cerium mixed oxides (Mn-Ce@Al 2 O 3 ), prepared by the impregnation-calcination method. The Mn-Ce@Al 2 O 3 with 0.2 wt% manganese and 0.2 wt% cerium exhibited superior catalytic performance, resulting in complete ATL degradation and 63% mineralization. Mn-Ce solid solution on the surface significantly increased the specific surface area (279.5 m 2 /g). High amount of Ce 3+ , Mn 3+ and high density of surface-active oxygen were contained on the surface of the catalyst, which facilitates the formation of oxygen vacancies and promotes the electron transfer in the catalyst. Combined with the low charge transfer resistance, surface protonated hydroxyl group, which was the active site of 0.2Mn-Ce@Al 2 O 3 , was more likely to adsorb ozone and decompose it into reactive oxygen species . O 2 · − and •OH were found to be the dominant active radicals for ATL degradation and mineralization that followed first-order kinetics. 17 intermediates were identified and 3 main degradation pathways were summarized, in order to provide reference for the complete mineralization of ATL.

Remarkable solar thermochemical CO2 splitting performances based on Ce- and Al-doped SrMnO3 perovskites

Ke Gao,Xianglei Liu,Qi Wang,Zhixing Jiang,Cheng Tian,Nan Sun,Yimin Xuan

Solar thermochemical CO2 splitting has emerged as a promising strategy for solar fuel production to alleviate climate change challenges and reduce the energy crisis. However, traditional redox materials still suffer from low CO production, poor cycle stability, high operating temperature, and large temperature swing, leading to low solar-to-fuel efficiency. Herein, Ce- and Al-doped SrMnO3 perovskites are proposed for high-performance solar thermochemical CO2 splitting within moderate temperature swing (1350/1100 °C). Sr0.6Ce0.4Mn0.8Al0.2O3 demonstrates a remarkable CO yield of 799.34 μmol g−1, which is ∼6.67 times as high as that of benchmark CeO2. Fast CO2 splitting kinetics of SCMA20 is demonstrated by the CO peak production rate enhanced by 142% compared with undoped SrMnO3. The proposed Sr0.6Ce0.4Mn0.8Al0.2O3 also exhibits excellent stability with no obvious deactivation or degradation over multiple cycles. The ultrahigh CO yield can be attributed to lower oxygen vacancy formation (3.65 eV) and migration energy (2.14 eV) as confirmed by DFT calculations, and the transformation of the first-order reaction (F1) to the second-order reaction (F2) compared to SrMnO3. This work provides a new path for high-performance solar thermochemical CO2 splitting with high CO production, fast reaction kinetics, good cycling stability, moderate temperature swing, and high solar absorptance.

Synergetic effect of Ce/Zr for ethanol synthesis from syngas over Rh-based catalyst

Caixia Zhu,Kaizhuang Xu,Yuan Fang,Qian Lv,Kun Jiang,Huibo Zhao,Yang Chen,Peng Wang,Hua Yang,Lizhi Wu,Yu Tang,Li Tan

The direct synthesis of ethanol from syngas is a promising way in the field of clean and efficient use of fossil fuel, but it still suffers from insufficient ethanol selectivity and understanding of active sites. In this work, the Rh-based catalyst with Ce as promoter and ZrO 2 as carrier exhibits excellent catalytic performance, showing the selectivity of ethanol toward 24.3 %. Moreover, the yield of methane decreases to 4.8 %, and the formation of CO 2 is inhibited to a certain degree by tuning the active sites. The carrier is changed by doping Ce into the ZrO 2 lattice, which assists to form the Rh δ+ active sites. The synergetic effect of Ce and Zr is important to influence the state of Rh species in the catalysts, leading to the differences in the CO hydrogenation process. On the other hand, the Rh δ+ active sites are also stabilized by promoted surface oxygen vacancies in the 2.0Rh5.0Ce-ZrO 2 catalyst. The high-activity catalyst with Rh δ+ active sites will be helpful to understand the real active sites of Rh-based catalysts for ethanol synthesis from syngas, thereby guiding further design of the related catalyst with high performance to meet the industrial demand in syngas converting to ethanol.

3D nanostructured Ce-doped CoFe-LDH/NF self-supported catalyst for high-performance OER

Lu Wang,Yi Liu,Xiaoheng Liu,Wei Chen

Powder electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions usually need adhesives for electrocatalytic performance tests, leading to the increase of resistance, reduction of catalyst loading, and easy stripping of the catalyst under long-time or high current operation. In this study, Ce-doped CoFe layered double hydroxides were uniformly grown on nickel foam by a one-step hydrothermal route. A nanostructured self-supported electrode Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF without adhesive was obtained directly, which has a regular nanoneedle morphology with a length of ∼1.2 μm and tip width of ∼20 nm. Adopting Ce3+ ions with a large radius to partially displace Fe3+ ions with a small radius produced lattice distortion and more defects in the host layer of CoFe-LDH, whereby possessing the great potential to enhance catalytic behaviors. Once used as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF shows an outstanding electrocatalytic performance, including an optimized overpotential of 225 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a decreased Tafel slope of 34.34 mV dec−1, and a low charge transfer impedance of 2.4 Ω in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, the overpotential of the working electrode increased by only 0.04 V after 24 hours and was maintained at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. These results demonstrate a low-cost strategy compared to using noble metal OER electrocatalysts. Thus, this study highlights a ready universal approach to fabricate high-performance supported catalysts for energy-related applications.
