Stabilizing Oxygen Vacancy in Entropy-Engineered CoFe2O4-Type Catalysts for Co-prosperity of Efficiency and Stability in an Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Yue Zhang,Tao Lu,Yike Ye,Weiji Dai,Yin’an Zhu,Ye Pan

We used entropy engineering to design a series of CoFe2O4-type spinels. Through microstructural characterization, electrochemical measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we demonstrated that the entropy-stabilized oxide (Co0.2Mn0.2Ni0.2Fe0.2Zn0.2)Fe2O4 has a single-phase spinel structure and exhibits both efficient and stable catalytic oxygen evolution. This is attributable to disordered occupation of multivalent cations, which induces severe lattice distortion and increases configurational entropy, thereby facilitating formation of structurally stable, high-density oxygen vacancies on the exposed surface of the spinel. Thus, more catalytic sites on the surface are activated and retained over the course of long-duration testing for oxygen evolution. Entropy engineering expands researchers’ access to catalysts that link entropy-stabilized structures to useful properties.

Novel magnetic biochar as an activator for peroxymonosulfate to degrade bisphenol A: Emphasizing the synergistic effect between graphitized structure and CoFe2O4

Yi Li,Shuanglong Ma,Shengjun Xu,Haichao Fu,Zhuoqian Li,Kai Li,Kai Sheng,Jinge Du,Xin Lu,Xianghua Li,Shiliang Liu

The biochar loaded with CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (CoFe 2 O 4 /HPC) fabricated by pyrolysis exhibited strong magnetic property, hierarchical porous and graphitized structure. CoFe 2 O 4 /HPC showed much better bisphenol A degradation than CoFe 2 O 4 in presence of peroxymonosulfate. The graphitized structure and the synergistic effect between graphitized structure and CoFe 2 O 4 were found to be responsible for the superiority of CoFe 2 O 4 /HPC among all the other catalysts. The prominent role including radical way mainly contributed by SO 4 − and non-radical way achieved by 1 O 2 , and the secondary role of electron transfer way proceeded by graphitized structure were uncovered. The processes such as redox between Co(III)/Co(II) and Fe(III)/Fe(II), the reduction of Fe(III) by O 2 − , and the participation of C O in 1 O 2 production were significant to the excellent catalytic performance of CoFe 2 O 4 /HPC. Considering its excellent separation, stability, adaptability and reusability, CoFe 2 O 4 /HPC opened up a novel way to develop green catalyst to activate PMS for organic pollutants degradation.

Intramolecular synergistic catalysis of ternary active sites of imidazole Ionic-liquid polymers immobilized on nanosized CoFe2O4@polystyrene composites for CO2 cycloaddition

Jing Chen,Jiakun Yang,Qin Wu,Daxin Shi,Kangcheng Chen,Yaoyuan Zhang,Xiaoyan Zheng,Hansheng Li

The cycloaddition reaction of CO 2 with epoxides is challenging, thereby requiring the development of environmentally friendly catalysts. Herein, a strategy was developed to construct a multifunctional heterogeneous magnetic catalyst (MPNPs-[ImR 2 NH 2 ][ZnBr 3 ]) of aminoethyl imidazole metal halide ionic liquids coated on nano-sized CoFe 2 O 4 @polystyrene for CO 2 cycloaddition. The created catalytic system displayed the intramolecular synergy of ternary active sites (Zn 2+ , Br − , and –NH 2 ), as well as coupling of catalysis and magnetic separation. In the absence of co-catalyst and solvent, MPNPs-[ImR 2 NH 2 ][ZnBr 3 ] exhibited excellent catalytic performance for CO 2 cycloaddition (99.92% yield and 100% selectivity) at 120 ℃ with 0.16 mol% catalyst dosage in 2.5 h. By appropriately increasing the reaction duration and catalyst dosage, 98.83% conversion and 99.26% selectivity were achieved even at mild conditions of 60 °C and 0.1 MPa. After 10 cycles of reuse, the recycled MPNPs-[ImR 2 NH 2 ][ZnBr 3 ] demonstrated the same high-efficiency activity as the fresh catalyst, as well as excellent stability and magnetic separation. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the intramolecular synergy of ternary active sites and the catalytic mechanism of bimolecular activation based on the multifunctional structure were proposed. This excellent catalyst was attributed to the intramolecular synergy of ternary active sites, large loading of active centers, lower internal diffusion resistance, the inert protective effect of polystyrene layer and the easily magnetic separation of CoFe 2 O 4 , highlighting a new direction for green catalytic chemistry.

Hydrothermal deposition of CoFe2o4 with a micro nano binary structure onto a wood surface with related magnetic property and microwave absorption

Yipeng Chen,Baokang Dang,Hanwei Wang,Wei Yan,Qingfeng Sun,Weigang Zhang

In this study, magnetic CoFe2O4 with a micro/nano binary structure was deposited onto a wood surface using a hydrothermal process. Several samples of CoFe2O4-modified wood composites were obtained by varying the initial parameters of the process. The morphology and structure of the samples demonstrated the influence of varying temperature during the hydrothermal process. The results indicated that CoFe2O4 particles, which comprise a variety of microscale and nanoscale structures, precipitated on the wood surface through the Ostwald ripening process under alkali treatment. Additionally, temperature was found to be a critical factor that influenced the resultant morphology, magnetic property, and microwave absorption property of the CoFe2O4-modified wood. Moreover, the CoFe2O4-modified wood had a high saturation magnetization (Ms) of 30.7 emu·g−1 and a minimum value of reflection of −16.2 dB at 16.6 GHz at room temperature. This work suggested that the CoFe2O4-modified wood composites can be used to design and manufacture microwave absorbers.

CoFe2O4/CoFe loaded 3D ordered hierarchical porous N-doped carbon for efficient oxygen reduction in Zn-air battery and hydrogen evolution

Xinlun Song,Juan Zhang,Xiaogeng Feng,Yan’ou Qi,Junshuo Cui,Ying Xiong

Optimizing active sites and enhancing mass transfer capability are of paramount importance for the improvement of electrocatalyst activity. On this basis, CoFe 2 O 4 /CoFe nanoparticles (NPs) loaded N-doped carbon (NC) that featured with interconnected three-dimensional (3D) ordered porous hierarchies (3DOM FeCo/NC) are prepared, and its electrocatalytic activity is studied. Due to the open structure of 3D ordered macro-pores that greatly improves the mass transfer capacity of the catalytic process and enhances the utilization of active sites inside the catalyst, as well as the uniform distribution of Fe and Co bimetallic sites on the porous skeleton, 3DOM FeCo/NC exhibits superior bi-functional catalytic activities for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The overpotential of HER is lower than that of commercial Pt/C when performed at high current density (>235 mA cm −2 ) in 1.0 M KOH, and the half-wave potential (0.896 V) of ORR in 0.1 M KOH is also superior to that of 20% commercial Pt/C and most other similar catalysts. The effective utilization and synergistic effect of CoFe 2 O 4 and CoFe hetero-metallic sites remarkably enhance the electrocatalytic activity. Furthermore, 3DOM FeCo/NC is assembled as an air electrode in Zn-air battery, and exhibits satisfactory maximum power density, open-circuit voltage, and charge/discharge stability over benchmark Pt/C + IrO 2 . This work contributes new insights into the design of transition-metal-based multifunctional catalysts, and has great potential for energy conversion and storage.

CoFe2O4@multi-walled carbon nanotubes integrated composite with nanosized architecture as a cathode material for high performance rechargeable lithium-oxygen battery

Zheng Huang,Bo Chi,Li Jian,Sun Youyi,Yaqing Liu

In this paper, CoFe 2 O 4 @multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposite is synthesized by a hydrothermal process and in-situ composite technique as cathode catalyst for rechargeable Li-O 2 battery (LOB). The as-prepared materials are characterized by XRD , TEM, XPS , BET, TG-DSC and FT-IR. Electrochemical discharge and charge capacity of MWCNTs and CoFe 2 O 4 @MWCNTs nanocomposite electrodes are investigated at current density of 0.02 mA cm −2 in the voltage window of 2.0–4.5 V. LOB with CoFe 2 O 4 @MWCNTs nanocomposite electrode shows an initial discharge capacity of 1245 mAh g −1 (electrode) , with reversible charge capacity of 1242 mAh g −1 (electrode) , while LOB with only MWCNTs electrode has discharge capacity of 545 mAh g −1 (electrode) and charge capacity of 543 mAh g −1 (electrode) . LOB with CoFe 2 O 4 @MWCNTs nanocomposite electrode shows good rate capability and cycle stability. After 15 cycles, the capacity of 1175 mAh g −1 (electrode) is still retained at the current density of 0.02 mA cm −2 while 723 mAh g −1 (electrode) is retained at 0.5 mA cm −2 . The capacity retention of CoFe 2 O 4 @MWCNTs nanocomposite electrode is 94.4% at 0.02 mA cm −2 and 92.1% at 0.5 mA cm −2 , respectively. During discharge, Li 2 CO 3 and Li 2 O 2 are the main discharge products. The results show that the electrochemical performance of MWCNTs is greatly enhanced with CoFe 2 O 4 introduced as core-shell structure.

Rapid magnetic solid-phase extraction of Congo Red and Basic Red 2 from aqueous solution by ZIF-8@CoFe2O4 hybrid composites

Yan Xu,Jingjie Jin,Xianliang Li,Yide Han,Hao Meng,Junbiao Wu,Xia Zhang

Core–shell metal–organic framework materials have attracted considerable attention mainly due to their enhanced or new physicochemical properties compared with their single-component counterparts. In this work, a core–shell heterostructure of CoFe 2 O 4 -Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8@CoFe 2 O 4 ) is successfully fabricated and used as an solid-phase extraction adsorbent to efficiently extract Congo Red and Basic Red 2 dyes from contaminated aqueous solution. Vibrating sample magnetometry indicates that the saturated magnetization of ZIF-8@CoFe 2 O 4 is 3.3 emu/g, which is large enough for magnetic separation. The obtained hybrid magnetic metal-organic framework based material ZIF-8@CoFe 2 O 4 can remove the investigated dyes very fast within 1 min of the contact time. The adsorbent ZIF-8@CoFe 2 O 4 also shows a good reusability. After regeneration, the adsorbent can still exhibit high removal efficiency (∼97%) toward Congo Red for five cycles of desorption–adsorption. This work reveals the great potential of core–shell ZIF-8@CoFe 2 O 4 sorbents for the fast separation and preconcentration of organic pollutants in aqueous solution before high-performance liquid chromatography analysis.

Construction of oxygen-vacancy-rich 2D nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets with CoFe@CoFe2O4 heterogeneous interfacial structure for rechargeable Zn–air batteries

Jizhao Zou,Tao Liang,Minggui Peng,Peng Liu,Zhe Li,Jiaming Wen,Zhangjian Li,Yusheng Yan,Xin Yu,Xierong Zeng,Junfeng Huang

Integration of cations doping by using unpaired high-spin electrons through the valence state substitution is deemed as a prospective strategy for construction of oxygen vacancies, regulation of inner electronic structures and enhancement of surface properties. Herein, an effective strategy is proposed to construct massive oxygen vacancies into 2D nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets by the design of heterogeneous interfaces between CoFe alloy and CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles. The valence state transition for Fe and Co endows electronic transfer capability and charge density around the oxygen atoms. The prepared CoFe-CoFe 2 O 4 @NCs-4 catalyst exhibits maximum content of oxygen vacancies (Density of O vac 50.1 %). It shows excellent ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.83 V and OER overpotential of 320 mV. Reversible Zn-air batteries assembled by the CoFe-CoFe 2 O 4 @NCs-4 catalysts exhibit a power density of 106.32 mW cm −2 and durable stability (500 h at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 ), which also are superior to those of the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C + RuO 2 catalyst. The excellent bifunctional catalytic performance can be attributed to synergistic effects between massive oxygen vacancies, ultrahigh specific surface area (545.9 m 2  g −1 ) and heterogeneous interfacial structure. This work provides valuable insight into designing efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by novel magnetically recyclable CoFe2O4/MXene quantum dots composites for rapid degradation of tetracycline: Synergistic performance and mechanisms

Zhenyu Guo,Haiyi Jin,Hongyu Sun,Bisheng Li,Huadong Yu,Die Ling Zhao,Hongjun Lin

Tetracycline (TC), a commonly used antibiotic in wastewater, poses environmental and health risks, thus demanding advanced catalysts for its effective removal. In this work, for the first time, we integrated cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) and MXene quantum dots (MQDs) to form magnetic heterojunctions for rapid degradation of TC in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Anchoring MQDs on the CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles remarkably promoted the overall degradation rate of TC to 98.2% within 20 min via both radical and non-radical pathways. The first-order kinetic constant was 0.170 min −1 , 3.5 and 15.5 times higher than that of CoFe 2 O 4 and MQDs alone, respectively. Quenching experiments revealed that the addition of p-benzoquinone (p-BQ) and furfuryl alcohol (FFA) reduced the degradation of TC within 20 min to 56.2% and 28.4%, respectively, indicating that the primary reactive oxygen species for TC degradation in the CoFe 2 O 4 /MQDs + PMS system are •O 2 − and 1 O 2 . CoFe 2 O 4 /MQDs also exhibited superparamagnetic property, which enabled their effective recovery by external magnetic field. Their reusability was verified by retaining 81.4% of catalytic efficacy in the consecutive 8th cycle. The CoFe 2 O 4 /MQDs + PMS system also exhibited excellent practicability in natural water samples as the degradation rates in both tap water and lake water environments exceeded 90%. Three potential pathways for TC degradation were proposed based on the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) characterizations and TC progressively transformed into 13 intermediates. This work may contribute to the ongoing efforts to develop advanced catalysts and strategies for mitigating the environmental impact of antibiotic pollution, offering a pathway toward sustainable and efficient water treatment technologies.

Effect of Supports on the Performance of La-Modified CoFe2O4 Oxygen Carriers in Chemical Looping Hydrogen Generation from Hydrogen-Rich Syngas

Mengliang Gao,Jie Gao,Ge Pu,Cong Yuan,Xingqiang Lu

The redox activity and thermal stability of oxygen carriers (OCs) during multi-cycle processes are important performance criteria. In this paper, the effects of three supports, i.e., ZrO2, TiO2, and YSZ (yttria-stabilized zirconia), on the reactivity, redox stability, hydrogen recovery capacity, and purity, as well as the sintering behavior of La-modified CoFe2O4 (LCF) OCs, were investigated. The results indicated that the unsupported LCF had severe sintering behavior, the aggregation of grains, the collapse of pore structure, and surface densification after multiple cycles led to a significant reduction in its activity. Meanwhile, the interaction between different supports and active components had a remarkable influence on fuel conversion and hydrogen recovery capacity. The formation of Fe2TiO5 in LCF6T4 weakened the initial reduction activity of the OC. Also, phase separation occurred after multiple cycles, forming separated Fe2O3 and TiO2, which further accelerated the sintering and resulted in irreversible deactivation. In contrast, LCF6Z4 and LCF6YZ4 exhibited excellent initial activity and cyclic stability, which was attributed to their improved pore structure and surface properties. Interestingly, the generated La2Zr2O7 pyrochlore structure was also conducive to the enhancement of cyclic stability properties for OCs. In addition, all OCs displayed high-purity hydrogen (>99.5%) generation properties. Overall, the ion-conductive YSZ-supported OC showed excellent reactivity and stability. After 11 cycles, the fuel conversion deactivation and hydrogen production deactivation for LCF5YZ5 were merely 6.23 and 8.26%, respectively.

CoFe2O4/MXene nanosheets modified hydrogel on PEEK with phototherapeutic and GPx-Mimetic activities for anti-pathogens in infectious bone defect repairment

Qiancun Wang,Chuanmei Zang,Yau Kei Chan,Song Wang,Weizhong Yang,Yi Deng,Tingting Zhu,Miaomiao He

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), as a promising alternative for hard tissue implant, still has limitations in anti-pathogens for coping with the clinical challenge. To reverse this situation, CoFe 2 O 4 /MXene nanosheets modified hydrogel was spin-coated on PEEK mediated by polydopamine to endow PEEK with favorable anti-bacterial activity. The modified PEEK implant exhibits the property of photothermal therapy (PTT) for local heat, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) for reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation to realize robust anti-pathogens. The antibacterial effect can be further enhanced by glutathione (GSH) consumption owing to the glutathione peroxides (GPx)-mimetic activity of CM2. In addition, we investigated the specific effects of the designed materials on bacteria, and the experimental results showed that constructed CM2 can lead to the DNA and protein of bacterial leakage and ATP synthesis decreased, ultimately eliminating more than 99% of bacteria. Furthermore, the sample exhibits favorable blood and cell compatibility with broad prospects in clinical application. Overall, a hydrogel coating-PEEK system with robust antibacterial properties has been manufactured in our work, which can not only exhibit compatibility, but also effectively avoid implant-related infection, which shows great promise for infectious bone defect repairment.

Excellent Energy Storage of Sandwich-Structured PVDF-Based Composite at Low Electric Field by Introduction of the Hybrid CoFe2O4@BZT–BCT Nanofibers

Qingguo Chi,Tao Ma,Yue Zhang,Qingguo Chen,Changhai Zhang,Yang Cui,Tiandong Zhang,Jiaqi Lin,Xuan Wang,Qingquan Lei

The high-performance energy-storage dielectric capacitors are increasingly necessary for the development of miniaturization, integration, and multifunctionality of electronic devices. Here, we describe a new strategy of a sandwich-structured polymer-based dielectric composite with inorganic fillers of semiconductor@perovskite hybrid fibers, and this novel dielectric composite possesses an excellent energy-storage performance at low electric field. It is of crucial importance to achieve hybrid nanofibers of 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3–0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 nanofibers (BZT–BCT NFs) deposited by CoFe2O4 nanoparticles (CFO; hereafter, CFO@BZT–BCT NFs in short). Herein, the BZT–BCT NF ceramic has the typical perovskite structure and large dielectric constant, which is used as the ceramic-support for CFO. Meanwhile, the semiconductor of CFO works as the electron donor to offer a great interfacial polarization for the improvement of overall dielectric constant of the composite. Remarkably, the trilayer structure is composed of outer poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) layer to improve the breakdown strength and middle CFO@BZT–BCT NFs–PVDF nanocomposite to enhance the dielectric properties. The BZT–BCT NFs were prepared by electrospinning, and then the CFO@BZT–BCT NFs were gained by hydrothermal method. Furthermore, the BZT–BCT NFs and the CFO@BZT–BCT NFs were modified by polydopamine (PDA). Finally, the sandwich-structured composites were gotten by a typical process of solution-casting and hot-pressing. The influences of fillers’ volume fraction and type on the performances of composites have been systematically investigated. The PVDF/CFO@BZT–BCT NFs–PVDF/PVDF composite (P/CFO@BZT–BCT NFs–P/P) exhibits an outstanding energy density performance under a low electric field. The trilayer structure composite with an optimized content of nanofibers possesses an excellent dielectric performance (dielectric constant ∼20.1 at 100 Hz) and great energy-storage performance (electric displacement ∼10.7 μC/cm2, discharged energy density ∼11.3 J/cm3, and efficiency ∼55.5% at a low electric field of 350 kV/mm). This work paves the way for potential applications in integrated electronic devices.
