Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) have attracted extensive attention in energy-related fields, especially for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, it is imperative to develop a facile and time-consuming approach to prepare metal phosphides with satisfactory catalytic performance. Herein, nitrogen-doped CoP-Co2P decorated with Ru (Ru/N-CoP-Co2P) is synthesized (Ru/N-CoP-Co2P) through a hydrothermal route and following an ultrafast and simple microwave avenue within 20 s. The achieved Ru/N-CoP-Co2P possesses an interconnected porous morphology to expose abundant active sites and accelerate the mass transport. Moreover, N doping and Ru-supported decorated Ru/N-CoP-Co2P also play a key role in promoting the electrocatalytic activity. Therefore, the as-designed Ru/N-CoP-Co2P presents good catalytic performance for the HER in a wide pH range. Ru/N-CoP-Co2P merely needs overpotentials of 63, 100, and 65 mV to obtain 10 mA cm–2 in acidic, alkaline, and seawater electrolytes. This research provides a novel and efficient strategy for the synthesis of TMPs with highly efficient catalytic activity.

Exploring cost-efficient and highly-efficient noble metal-free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) involved in sustainable energy devices remains a great challenge. Transition-metal phosphides supported on heteroatom-doped carbons have shown potential as alternative candidates for precious metals because of their tunable electronic structures and higher catalytic performance. Phosphating was used to construct CoP nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on a nitrogen-doped porous carbon framework (CoP@NC) from Co NPs loaded on NC, using PH 3 gas released from NaH 2 PO 2 during heat treatment. The dodecahedral structure of Co NPs was retained in their transformation to CoP NPs. The CoP@NC electrocatalyst shows a remarkable ORR activity with a half-wave potential up to 0.92 V under alkaline conditions, which is attributed to the combined coupling between the well dispersed CoP nanoparticles on the nitrogen-doped carbon and the efficient mass transport in the porous structure. Zinc-air batteries assembled with the CoP@NC electrocatalyst as a cathode have a high open-circuit voltage of 1.51 V and power density of 210.1 mW cm −2 . This work provides a novel strategy to develop low-cost catalysts with an excellent ORR performance to promote their practical use in metal-air batteries

Hydrogen production via electrocatalytic water splitting has garnered significant attention, due to the growing demand for clean and renewable energy. However, achieving low overpotential and long-term stability of water splitting catalysts at high current densities remains a major challenge. Herein, a CoP@CoNi layered double hydroxide (LDH) electrode was synthesized via a two-step electrodeposition process, demonstrating oxygen evolution reaction, with an overpotential (ƞ 400 ) of 373 mV and a Tafel slope of 64.2 mV/dec. Subsequently, a superhydrophilic CoP@CoNi LDH-Pt electrode was prepared using an in situ oxidation method, with Pt clusters anchored within the CoP@CoNi LDH for the hydrogen evolution reaction, with an overpotential (ƞ 400 ) of 119 mV and a Tafel slope of 33.6 mV/dec. The CoP@CoNi LDH-Pt||CoP@CoNi LDH system achieved a cell voltage of 1.96 V at 1000 mA/cm 2 , maintaining stable performance after water electrolysis for 160 h. These remarkable outcomes stem from the fast charge transfer, improved mass transfer, and superior stability of the catalysts. Heterostructure electrodes were constructed to optimize the electrocatalytic kinetics through strong interfacial electronic interactions, while superhydrophilic electrodes were fabricated to improve the mass transfer process at a high current density. Anchoring high-activity components in catalysts prevents their detachment during water electrolysis, enhancing the structural stability of the electrodes. This study provides a new approach for large-scale preparation of efficient water electrolysis catalysts and offers significant potential for industrial hydrogen production applications.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries deliver a higher energy density than lithium ion batteries and are therefore regarded as next-generation batteries. However, the shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and their slow redox kinetics are still the main setbacks for practical application. In this study, a porous three-dimensional carbon frame embedded with CoP nanoparticles (CoP@3DC) was synthesized by pyrolyzing and phosphating an acrylic cation exchange resin previously subjected to cobalt ion exchange. The abundant pores of CoP@3DC inhibit the diffusion of LiPSs, while its conductive three-dimensional carbon skeleton is conducive to the rapid transmission of electrons. In addition, CoP nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in the porous carbon network not only provide numerous chemical adsorption sites for LiPSs, but also accelerate their conversion to Li 2 S. Constant-current charging and discharging tests revealed that the CoP@3DC/S cathode achieves an initial discharge capacity of 1117.37 mAh∙g −1 at 0.5C and maintains a capacity of up to 740.56 mAh∙g −1 after 600 cycles, with a decay rate per cycle of only 0.056 %. Our work provides a facile supporting strategy for transition metal nanoparticles to significantly improve the performance of Li-S batteries.

Transition metal-based electrocatalysts are the promising candidates to substitute noble metal-based catalysts for water electrolysis, owing to its abundant earth reserves and inexpensive fabrication costs. Interface engineering and cation doping engineering are verified as the effective methods to improve the sluggish electrocatalytic performance of transition metal-based electrocatalysts. Here, we synthesized a self-supported heterostructure of Ce doped Co(OH) 2 nanosheets/CoP nanowires on the support of nickel foam (Ce-Co(OH) 2 /CoP/NF) by simple hydrothermal method , low-temperature phosphorization method. The Ce atom doping can lead to lattice distortion and abundant superficial defects on crystal surface, which will generate more active sites and faster charges transformation. The heterointerface between Ce-Co(OH) 2 and CoP also can lead to electronic structure modulation at interface domain, which not can induce much fresh active sites in this area, but can optimize the active sites to the optimal state for superior catalytic activity. Benefitting from these, it only needs the overpotentials of 253 and 56 mV to realize 10 mA/cm 2 for OER and HER under 1 M KOH solution, which is much enhance than single-phased samples. As the bifunctional electrocatalyst for two-electrode system, it merely requires 1.53 V to attain 10 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH, and it also exhibits outstanding overall water splitting performance in alkaline natural electrolyte, along with excellent catalytic long-time durability. In addition, the Ce-Co(OH) 2 /CoP/NF-based electrolyzer also could achieve energy-saving hydrogen production, and simultaneously oxidative degradation of organic materials or biomass upgrading at anode under lower voltages. This work paves a novel idea to fabricate high-efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for energy-saving H 2 production.

3D ZIF-67-particles-impregnated cellulose-nanofiber nanosheets with oriented macropores are synthesized via directional-freezing-assisted in situ self-assembly, and converted to 3D CoP-nanoparticle (NP)-embedded hierarchical, but macropores-oriented, N-doped carbon nanosheets via calcination and phosphidation. The obtained nanoarchitecture delivers overpotentials at 10 and 50 mA cm −2 and Tafel slope of 82.1 and 113.4 mV and 40.8 mV dec −1 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , and of 97.1 and 136.6 mV and 51.2 mV dec −1 in 1 M KOH, all of which are superior to those of the most reported non-noble-metal-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. This catalyst even surpasses commercial Pt/C for a much lower overpotential at high current densities, which is essential for large-scale hydrogen production. Its catalytic activity can be further optimized to become one of the best in both 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH. The outstanding catalytic activity is ascribed to the uniformly-dispersed small CoP NPs in the 3D carbon sheets and the hierarchical nanostructure with rich oriented pores. This work develops a facile, economical, and universal self-assembly strategy to fabricate uniquely nanostructured hybrids to simultaneously promote charge transfer and mass transport, and also offers an inexpensive and high-performance HER catalyst toward industry-scale water splitting.

Transition metal phosphides have been considered as prospective bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting due to high activity and excellent stability. In this work, we report a facile strategy for synthesizing high-dispersion cobalt Prussian blue analogue-derived CoP nanoparticles that are decorated on N-doped electrospun porous carbon nanofibers (denoted as CoP@CNF). The CoP@CNF is obtained using electrospinning, subsequent carbonization , and phosphatization treatment. Due to the high conductivity, abundance of electrocatalytic active sites, and the synergistic effect between ultra-fine CoP nanoparticles and porous N-doped electrospun carbon nanofibers, the prepared CoP@CNF catalyst exhibits remarkable activity with low overpotentials (127 and 300 mV) at 10 mA cm −2 , and small Tafel slopes (73.4 and 73.8 mV dec −1 ) for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolyte , respectively. A water electrolyzer cell fabricated by applying CoP@CNF as both anode and cathode catalysts needs 1.64 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 , and exhibits remarkably long-term stability. This work provides useful guidance for the preparation of bifunctional nanocomposite electrocatalysts and further extends the application of Prussian blue analogues in the field of energy conversion.

Recent research suggests that transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are one of the most promising nobel-metal-free electrocatalysts for catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction. In this study, we report rectangular CoP nanosheet (NS) arrays on carbon cloth (CoP NS/CC) via a concise two-step synthetic method. The 3D rectangular CoP NS/CC with a three-dimensional porous and self-supported structure was fabricated via a hydrothermal method, followed by a low-temperature phosphidation treatment. Such 3D rectangular CoP NS/CC, as an HER electrocatalyst in acidic solution, exhibited high activity, good stability, and nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency (FE). The electrocatalyst requires an overpotential of 92, 112 and 195 mV to achieve current densities of 10, 20 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, and maintain its catalytic stability for more than 50 h. In addition, the electrocatalyst works well in a neutral environment.

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) suffer from electrocatalytic activity loss due to particle aggregation. We have proposed a MOF confinement strategy synthesizes CoP-NiP 2 quantum dots (QDs) embedded in N-doped carbon (CoP-NiP 2 QDs/NC), achieving atomic-level dispersion of active species. Electrochemical analyses reveal: 1) hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance surpassing commercial 20% Pt/C above 42 mA·cm -2 with ultralow loading (0.2 mg·cm -2 ); 2) Superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting in alkaline/neutral electrolytes, outperforming commercial RuO 2 and RuO 2 ||Pt/C electrolytic cell. Enhanced charge transfer kinetics supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which reveal synergistic electronic interactions between CoP and NiP 2 optimizing Gibbs free energy of reactions and water adsorption/dissociation energetics. This work shows a confinement-driven design strategy for multicomponent TMP QDs, bridging synthetic control of compound architectures with their electrocatalytic functionality for efficient hydrogen production.

Transition metal phosphide (TMP) emerges as a promising electrocatalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). However, conventional TMP materials require exogenous metal ions to participate in coordination reactions, which usually suffer from active site blocking, pronounced intrinsic impedance, and inevitable catalyst shedding at high current density. Herein, a novel in-situ construction strategy has been developed to grow N -doped carbon (NC) enwrapped Co/CoP nanosheets directly onto Co foam (abbreviated as CoF) through a three-step transformation of Co to Co(OH) 2 to Co-Metal-Organic Framework (Co-MOF) to Co/CoP/NC. In the entire preparation process, Co metal is only provided by the CoF substrate without external metal sources. Such in-situ construction yields tight contact at the interface of the heterogeneous catalyst, leading to much-reduced impedance and boundary vacancy, while the porous nitrogen-doped carbon backbone further endows the catalyst with the exposure of massive active sites, promotes mass transfer, and possesses high electrical conductivity. The Co/CoP/NC/CoF requires overpotentials of only 64 mV/263 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 414 mV/481 mV@400 mA cm −2 for both HER/OER in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. Remarkably, it reveals excellent OWS catalytic activity with a cell voltage of 1.56 V@10 mA cm −2 and 1.88 V@200 mA cm −2 . This strategy of in-situ interface engineering transformation provides new ideas for direct device processing and construction of highly-efficient transition-metal-based OWS electrode materials.

Efficient extractions of trace antibiotic residues in the environment are a key factor for accurate quantification of the residues. A new nanoporous material, namely, magnetically covalent organic polymer (MCOP, Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-COP) was synthesized in this work and was used for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The combination of MSPE with high-performance liquid chromatography separation together with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) was established as an effective method for the determination of four sulfonamide (SA) residues in surface water surrounding a cattle farm. The synthesized magnetic material was characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, magnetic properties measurement system (MPMS), and nitrogen gas porosimetry. The material possessed many attractive features, such as a unique microporous structure, a larger specific surface area (137.93 m2·g−1) than bare Fe3O4 (24.84 m2·g−1), high saturation magnetization (50.5 emu·g−1), open adsorption sites, and high stability. The influencing parameters, including pH, the used amount of MCOPs, the type of eluent, adsorption solution, and desorption time, were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the method conferred good linearity ranges (R2 ≥ 0.9990), low detection limits (S/N = 3, LOD, 0.10–0.25 μg·L−1), and satisfactory recoveries (79.7% to 92.2%). The enrichment factor (EF) for the four SAs was 34.13–38.86. The relative standard deviations of intraday (n = 5) and of interday (n = 3) were less than 4.8% and 8.9%, respectively. The equilibria between extraction and desorption for SAs could be reached within 150 s. The proposed method was sensitive and convenient for detecting SA residues in complex environmental matrices, and the successful application of the new MCOPs as an adsorbent was demonstrated.

Hydrogen evolution catalysts with effectively integrated structures at different length scales are promising to remarkably boost the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but their fabrication presents great challenges. A 3-D structure of graphene oxide (GO) conformally coated with 2,2′-biquinoline-4,4′-dicarboxylate (BQ)-Co2+ complexes is synthesized via polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-mediated in situ self-assembly, in which PVP promotes attachment of BQ and Co2+ and prevents the restacking of nanosheets, while formation of amorphous BQ-Co2+ complexes allows their uniform growth. This structure is subsequently converted to 3-D graphene supported CoP NP-embedded N-doped carbon via calcination and low-temperature phosphidation and applied as a catalyst toward the HER. The onset overpotential, overpotenitial at 10 mA cm–2, Tafel slope, and exchange current density of this catalyst are 6.3 mV, 78.0 mV, 45.7 mV dec–1, and 0.3126 mA cm–2 (0.5 M H2SO4), respectively, all of which compare favorably to those of most reported non-noble-metal-based catalysts, and the catalyst displays superior durability with a slight current increase after 23 h of chronoamperometric measurement or little current loss after 2000 CV cycles. This work develops a strategy to fabricate high-performance and low-cost HER catalysts and deepens the understanding of the mechanism of the polymer-mediated in situ self-assembly of amorphous metal–organic complexes.
