The peroxodisulfate (PDS)-based oxidation systems are promising for Cu(II) complex decomplexation owing to its capacity to harness the self-enhanced decomplexation (SED) effect of Cu(II) complexes. This phenomenon was conventionally attributed to liquid-phase autocatalysis via Fenton-like reactions between daughter Cu(II) species and PDS. However, this frequently adopted hypothesis is inconsistent with the actual catalytic activity of Cu(II) species and has been challenged by our preliminary results. Herein, we revisit the decomplexation of copper(II)-ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Cu(II)-EDTA) in UV/PDS system, with particular emphasis on correcting the catalytic behaviors of Cu species and clarifying the indispensable role of UV-irradiation in SED effect. Both acidic and alkaline conditions exhibit significant SED effect, but we reveal a pH-dependent SED mechanism that is fundamentally different from the prevailing liquid-phase autocatalysis mechanism. Under acidic conditions, Cu(II) complexes exhibit enhanced catalytic capacity with decreasing ligand coordination strength, primarily stemming from the activation of PDS by Cu(I) species produced via the irradiation-induced intramolecular charge transfer; In alkaline environments, only liberated Cu(II) substantially contribute to SED effect via spontaneous hydrolysis, forming nanostructured CuO after aging, which activates PDS through heterogeneous Fenton-like processes. While acidic conditions demonstrate faster decomplexation, alkaline-generated solid products facilitate multi-cycle treatment efficiency and alkaline conditions also exhibits stronger resistance to chloride. This work corrects the misinterpretation of SED mechanism in UV/PDS/Cu(II)-EDTA system, and provides a fundamental and accurate mechanistic basis for the efficient treatment of copper-containing organic wastewater by PDS-based processes.

This study presents an innovative electrochemical biosensor for the rapid and sensitive detection of Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), a significant foodborne pathogen. The biosensor is based on carbon paper modified with a Cu(Ⅱ)-crosslinked chitosan hydrogel film. Unlike conventional methods that rely on biomolecular recognition, this paper sensor detects S. aureus by measuring its unique respiration cycle, specifically its ability to reduce ferricyanide to ferrocyanide in the presence of mannitol. The chitosan hydrogel enhances the surface concentration of ferrocyanide and exhibits anti-fouling properties, while Cu(Ⅱ) crosslinking improves conductivity and diffusion. The biosensor demonstrates high sensitivity (0.082 μA/μM in I-t tests and 5.31 μA/μM in DPV tests) and low limits of detection (3.47 μM in I-t tests and 0.64 μM in DPV tests). It achieves a detection linear range of 10 0 to 10 5 CFU/mL with an LOD of 3.4 CFU/mL as well as excellent repeatability (RSD of 4.2%) and stability (retaining 83.4% of its initial signal after 15 days). Its performance in real food and wound samples confirms its high sensitivity and reasonable recovery rates, even in complex matrices. This research provides a strong foundation for the application of electrochemical biosensors in food safety monitoring and pathogen detection.

Coffee grounds are converted to magnetic biochar via one-step co-ball milling. • Cu(II) uptake increases by ∼66% with rapid magnetic separation. • Oxygen-containing groups and Fe 3 O 4 synergistically drive adsorption. • Over 71% capacity is retained after five cycles. The increasing prominence of Cu(II) pollution in water bodies has driven the development of efficient and easily recoverable adsorbents. In this study, M-CBC was prepared from waste coffee grounds via pyrolysis and ball milling. Ball milling significantly increased the specific surface area and introduced abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. The loaded Fe 3 O 4 provided favorable superparamagnetism (saturation magnetization: 8.87 emu/g), enabling rapid magnetic separation. Batch adsorption experiments showed that under optimal conditions (pH 5.0, dosage 0.8 g/L, time 180 min), the actual adsorption capacity for Cu(II) reached 23.54 ± 0.23 mg/g, representing an approximately 66% enhancement compared to unmodified biochar. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 49.06 ± 1.36 mg/g at 25 °C, suggesting predominantly monolayer adsorption behavior on relatively homogeneous active sites. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process exhibited spontaneous and temperature-dependent characteristics, indicating the possible coexistence of multiple adsorption interactions. After five consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles, M-CBC retained 71.4% of its initial capacity, demonstrating excellent regeneration stability. Mechanistic analysis revealed that surface complexation with oxygen-containing groups played a dominant role, while the redox activity of Fe 3 O 4 provided synergistic enhancement. The combined effects of ball milling and Fe 3 O 4 loading effectively improved the adsorption performance, magnetic recoverability, and structural stability of the biochar. This work offers a resource-efficient approach to valorize waste coffee grounds and highlights the promising potential of M-CBC for treating Cu(II)-containing industrial wastewater due to its high efficiency and easy recoverability. Designing multifunctional nanotherapeutic platforms that integrate multiple therapeutic capabilities with enhanced tumor specificity and low systemic toxicity has emerged as a promising strategy for cancer therapy. Herein, we put forward a simple and clear route to construct multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) integrating chemodynamic therapy (CDT), starvation therapy (ST), and photothermal therapy (PTT) by using polydopamine as a protective layer to coat Cu2+-doped zinc phosphate loaded with glucose oxidase (designated as Cu-ZnP@GOx/PDA/PEG NPs) for optimizing therapeutic efficacy. The obtained Cu-ZnP@GOx/PDA/PEG NPs utilize porous Cu2+-doped ZnP to provide sufficient space for efficient GOx loading, while the PDA shell coated on the surface acts as a “gatekeeper” to prevent enzyme leakage and provides photothermal conversion capabilities. When Cu-ZnP@GOx/PDA/PEG NPs accumulate at tumor sites, the slightly acidic tumor microenvironment triggers the degradation of Cu-ZnP@GOx/PDA/PEG NPs, thereby releasing loaded GOx and doped Cu2+. The released Cu2+ is reduced to Cu+ by glutathione (GSH), subsequently catalyzing H2O2 decomposition to generate highly cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) for effective CDT. The released GOx can cut off glucose metabolism in tumor cells to realize ST, and the substances produced during the process of glucose oxidation can improve the microenvironment for better CDT. Under near-infrared irradiation, the generated heat by the photothermal effect of PDA can not only be applied for PTT but also enhance the catalytic efficiency of Fenton-like reactions and the enzymatic activity of GOx, achieving the goal of trimodal synergistic therapy of CDT/ST/PTT. Importantly, in vivo studies using tumor-bearing mice demonstrate that the combined therapy via Cu-ZnP@GOx/PDA/PEG NPs effectively suppresses tumor growth, and no obvious systemic toxicity can be observed. Taken together, the construction of Cu-ZnP@GOx/PDA/PEG NPs can provide a feasible strategy for a safe and efficient cancer therapy.

The development of adsorbents to remove heavy metal ions from water with high adsorption capacity and recyclable performances has always been the focus and challenge of current research. A new type of high-efficiency heavy-metal adsorbent, (graphene oxide/carboxymethyl cellulose)-acrylamide (GO/CMC-AM) was prepared in this paper. The adsorbent was prepared through graft copolymerisation by aqueous solution polymerisation. The results showed that CMC, AM, and GO are successfully grafted to form a three-dimensional network structure. The adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the isotherm adsorption curve was highly consistent with the Langmuir model. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of (GO/CMC)-AM for Cu (II) reached 289.7 mg/g. After 5 adsorption cycles, the removal rate of Cu (II) still remains as high as 75.1%. Overall, (GO/CMC)-AM exhibits rapid, efficient, and stable adsorption performance, highlighting its broad application potential in treating heavy-metal wastewater.

Starch intake is the main cause of postprandial hyperglycemia. This study aimed to investigate the effect of hesperetin-copper (II) complex [Hsp-Cu(II)] on the physico-chemical properties and digestibility of gelatinized corn starch (GCS). It was found that with the addition of 1.44 mg/mL Hsp-Cu(II), the digestion rate of GCS decreased from 87.0% to 52.2%, the rapidly digestible starch content reduced from 22.7% to 14.4%, and the resistant starch content increased from 18.1% to 55.0%, suggesting that Hsp-Cu(II) decreased the digestion rate of GCS by increasing the content of resistant starch. The analysis of X-ray diffraction, rheology and differential scanning calorimetry showed that Hsp-Cu(II) increased the crystallinity, viscosity, storage modulus (G′), loss modulus (G′′) and thermal stability of GCS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy found that Hsp-Cu(II) bound with GCS through hydrogen bonds. In addition, scanning electron microscopy showed that Hsp-Cu(II)‒GCS complex possessed a denser structure, thicker crystalline flakes and thinner amorphous flakes in comparison with GCS. Therefore, Hsp-Cu(II) may inhibit the digestion of GCS by changing the physicochemical properties and increasing the content of resistant starch of GCS, and inhibiting the activities of α-amylase and α-glucosidase at the same time by hindering the binding of GCS to the enzymes. These findings have demonstrated the potential ability of Hsp-Cu(II) to lower the level of postprandial blood glucose. This study may provide new insights into the development of Hsp-Cu(II) as a novel anti-diabetic nutritional supplement.

Low selectivity and weak stability constantly restrict the industrial application of emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) for metal ions separation. This study proposed an improved ELM system, in which selectivity and stability were simultaneously enhanced for separation of Cd(II)/Cu(II) by adding citric acid and its salt as retardant and buffer difunctional additives. Initially, the separation coefficient ( β Cd/Cu ) in the blank experiment was only 1.15 in 15 min, which indicated that P507 exhibited a poor selectivity as a carrier. After adding citrate additives, the β Cd/Cu of the improved ELM system increased to more than 395.19 for two reasons. Firstly, the selectivity was enhanced by the selective chelation of citrate radicals on the Cu(II) ions, which were trapped in feed solution. Conversely, the Cd(II) ions were preferentially extracted by the P507 and then stripped into internal phase. Secondly, the stability was also improved, because the pH variation in the feed solution caused by the instability of membrane breakage was effectively controlled by the citrate additives as a pH buffer. Important variables in the citrate-enhanced ELM system including total citrate concentration, P507 concentration, dosage ratio of H 3 Cit to Na 3 Cit, H 2 SO 4 concentration, and metal ion concentration were studied, respectively. The scale-up continuous experiment was executed in a pilot-scale modified rotating disc contactor with β Cd/Cu of 859.61, which indicated that the citrate-enhanced ELM has considerable industrial application potential for efficient and steady separation of Cd(II)/Cu(II).

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction to highly selective ethylene is particularly desirable yet challenging. The competition between methane and ethylene in the CO 2 RR process underscores the critical necessity of designing the catalyst for ethylene by suppressing the methane pathway. Herein, we introduced controllable Cu(II)/Cu(I) interfaces by regulating the ratio of ionic liquids (ILs) and H 2 O. The Cu x O-IL4 catalyst with main CuO/Cu 2 O structure, exhibits a high Faraday efficiency toward C 2 H 4 (∼54 %) and less CH 4 (∼1 %) under 250 mA·cm −2 current density at −1.18 V (vs RHE). Experimental and theoretical analyses demonstrate that Cu(I) sites favor CO bridge formation, while Cu(II) sites preferentially generate CO atop on Cu x O-IL4 catalysts. The Cu(II)/Cu(I) interface in Cu x O-IL4 facilitates the generation of CO bridge intermediates, thereby lowering the energy barrier for *CO dimerization and also preventing *CO hydrogenation to CH 4 formation, thus enhancing the selectivity of CO 2 -to-ethylene conversion. The study provides a novel approach for precisely controlling CO adsorption configurations to enhance CO 2 RR selectivity toward high-value multicarbon products formation.

An ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor for Cu 2+ detection was first developed based on p-aminothiophenol (PATP) anchored on the surface of Au nanoparticle-decorated hydrogen-incorporated TiS 2 nanosheets (PATP/Au-H x TiS 2 ). In the synthesis process, the plane edges of H x TiS 2 nanosheets offered Au nanoparticles with incubation sites for the heterogeneous nucleation and growth. On the other hand, Au nanoparticles were not only served as an excellent electrical catalyst to facilitate electron transfer and as a substrate for loading PATP molecules by Au-S valent bonds, but also could effectively avoid the aggregation of H x TiS 2 nanosheets . Due to the synergetic effects from Au-H x TiS 2 for signal amplification, the as-formed electrochemical sensor exhibited highly sensitive and selective assaying of Cu 2+ with a detection limit of 90 pM (3σ) and a linear range from 0.2 nM to 5 μM, under optimal conditions. Its specificity was ascribed to the strong coordination interaction between Cu 2+ and N atoms of imine moieties in PATP after electrochemical oxidation .

Highlights A novel PS-2-AB chelating resin was synthesized by grafting 2-aminobenzimidazole onto polystyrene. The resin showed Cu(II) and Ni(II) adsorption capacities of 125.04 mg/g and 157.44 mg/g, respectively. The resin maintained over 84% adsorption capacity after five regeneration cycles. To address heavy metal contamination in wastewater, this study developed a novel chelating resin (PS-2-AB) by grafting 2-aminobenzimidazole onto chloromethylated polystyrene. The resin was characterized using SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS to confirm successful modification and analyze its structural properties. Batch adsorption tests were conducted to evaluate its removal performance for Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions. Under optimal conditions (pH 5.0–7.0, dosage: 1.0 g/L), PS-2-AB achieved maximum adsorption capacities of 125.04 mg/g for Cu(II) and 157.44 mg/g for Ni(II), which are significantly higher than those of the commercial resin D113 (44.68 mg/g for Cu(II) and 25.17 mg/g for Ni(II)) under the same conditions. Adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemisorption-dominated behavior, while equilibrium data fit the Langmuir model, suggesting monolayer adsorption. Thermodynamic parameters confirmed a spontaneous and endothermic process. After five regeneration cycles, PS-2-AB retained approximately 87% (Cu) and 89% (Ni) of its original capacity, demonstrating good reusability. These results indicate that PS-2-AB exhibits markedly better adsorption performance than D113, making it a promising and cost-effective adsorbent for the efficient removal of Cu(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous media.

A Cu(II)/heat coactivated peracetic acid (PAA) system for enhancing diclofenac (DCF) degradation was proposed in this work. The superiority of this synergetic activation strategy for PAA, working reactive species, catalytic mechanism and effects of reaction parameters on DCF elimination in this system were simultaneously investigated. Based on our results, the DCF loss rate in Cu(II)-heat/PAA process at pH 8.0 was about 49.3 and 4.2 times of that in Cu(II)/PAA and heat/PAA processes, respectively. Increasing the reaction temperature to 60 о C not only motivated the conversion of Cu(II) to Cu(I) but also facilitated the one-electron transfer between Cu(I) and PAA, boosting the generation of radicals. Organic radicals (mainly CH 3 C(O)O• and CH 3 C(O)OO•) were evidenced to be the core oxidizing substances dominating in the destruction of DCF while hydroxyl radical (•OH) made a minor contribution in this system by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method together with scavenging experiments. This study broads the eyes into enhanced PAA activation initiated by homogenous Cu(II), providing a simple but efficient tool to degrade micropollutants .

The sensitive and accurate determination of glyphosate (Glyp) is urgently demanded because it is closely correlated with human health and environmental safety. In this work, we proposed a sensitive and convenient colorimetric assay by employing copper ion peroxidases for the detection of Glyp in the environment. Free Cu(II) ions displayed high peroxidase activity and can catalytically oxidize the colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB, resulting in an obviously visible discoloration reaction. Once the Glyp is added, the ability of copper ions to mimic peroxidase can be largely suppressed because of the generation of Glyp–Cu2+chelate. The favorable selectivity and sensitivity were demonstrated in the colorimetric analysis of Glyp. Furthermore, this rapid and sensitive method was successfully applied in the accurate and reliable determination of glyphosate in the real sample, holding promising applications in pesticide determination in the environment.Keywords:label-free;colorimetric analysis;copper ions;peroxidase-mimicking activity;glyphosate
