Cardiac looping is a crucial process during embryonic development. Abnormalities or failures in cardiac looping can lead to congenital heart defects, thereby affecting normal physiological function. Environmental pollutant exposure is one of the major causes of cardiac looping failure. D-tetramethrin is a hygienic insecticide widely used in households and public places, that can enter the human body through contact, insect transmission, and the food chain, thereby impacting human health. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to different concentrations of D-tetramethrin to analyze its effects on heart development, and oxidative stress levels within the embryos. Additionally, qPCR was employed to analyze the transcription and the expression levels of genes related to heart development and function. The results showed that (1) D-tetramethrin exposure significantly reduced heart rate and increased the distance between the sinus venosus and the bulbus arteriosus (SV-BA), which suggested that D-tetramethrin induced cardiac looping failure and led to abnormal heart function. (2) D-tetramethrin exposure elevated the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in zebrafish embryos while decreasing the enzyme activities of key antioxidant stress enzymes, such as catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). (3) D-tetramethrin exposure resulted in a significant downregulation of the transcription of cardiac looping-related genes ( Myh6 , Nkx2.5 , Tbx2b , Tbx5a, Tnnt2c and Hand2 ) and heart function-related genes ( Gata4, Vmhc and Nppa ). Our findings indicate that D-tetramethrin causes the accumulation of ROS, which in turn alters the transcription levels of genes related to cardiac looping, ultimately resulting in cardiac looping failure.

The development of STING inhibitors for the treatment of STING-related inflammatory diseases continues to encounter significant challenges. The activation of STING is a multi-step process that includes binding with cGAMP, self-oligomerization, and translocation from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus, ultimately inducing the expression of IRF3 and NF-κB-mediated interferons and inflammatory cytokines. It has been demonstrated that disruption of any of these steps can effectively inhibit STING activation. Traditional structure-based drug screening methodologies generally focus on specific binding sites. In this study, a TransformerCPI model based on protein primary sequences and independent of binding sites is employed to identify compounds capable of binding to the STING protein. The natural product Licochalcone D (LicoD) is identified as a potent and selective STING inhibitor. LicoD does not bind to the classical ligand-binding pocket; instead, it covalently modifies the Cys148 residue of STING. This modification inhibits STING oligomerization, consequently suppressing the recruitment of TBK1 and the nuclear translocation of IRF3 and NF-κB. LicoD treatment ameliorates the inflammatory phenotype in Trex1 −1− mice and inhibits the progression of DSS-induced colitis and AOM/DSS-induced colitis-associated colon cancer (CAC). In summary, this study reveals the potential of LicoD in treating STING-driven inflammatory diseases. It also demonstrates the utility of the TransformerCPI model in discovering allosteric compounds beyond the conventional binding pockets.

Rechargeable aluminum-sulfur batteries (Al-S) are emerging as a promising alternative energy storage system beyond lithium-ion batteries due to their high energy density, abundant material resources, and economic efficiency. However, their practical application remains challenged by sluggish conversion kinetics, polysulfide shuttling, and low sulfur cathode utilization. While extensive studies have focused on enhancing polysulfide adsorption through catalytic strategies, the roles of electronic structure in dictating catalytic performance remain underexplored. Here, this work unveils the critical effect of unpaired electronic structure on the catalytic performance of single atom ferromagnetic transition metals through a systematic evaluation of three typical atomically dispersed ferromagnetic single atoms—Fe, Co, and Ni—supported on porous carbon (denoted as PC-SAFAs). Comprehensive characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the PC-SAFe catalysts, exhibiting the highest spin polarization arising from unpaired electrons, demonstrate the strongest interactions with polysulfide, thereby facilitating rapid and reversible polysulfide conversion reactions. Consequently, Al-S batteries incorporating the optimized PC-SAFe cathode achieve an impressive specific capacity of 508.8 mAh g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 after 500 cycles, along with much improved rate capability. This work provides a deeper understanding of the role of electronic structure in catalytic chemistry, and offers new insights for developing high-performance Al-S batteries.

Charge overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction is a crucial parameter for the energy conversion efficiency of lithium-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries. So far, the realization of low charge overpotential via catalyst design is a grand challenge in this field, which usually exceeds 0.25 V. Herein, we report an orbital reconstruction strategy to significantly decrease the charge overpotential to the low 0.11 V by employing PdCo nanosheet catalyst under a low-loading mass (0.3 mg/cm 2 ) and capacity (0.3 mAh/cm 2 ). Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the precise d-d orbital coupling ( d xz - d xz , d yz - d yz and d z 2 - d z 2 ) between the low-electronegativity Co and Pd leads to the reconstruction of Pd 4 d orbitals in PdCo nanosheets, thereby resulting in a downward shift of all the three active Pd 4 d orbitals ( d z 2 , d xz and d yz ) relative to that of Pd nanosheets. Furthermore, the highest energy level of the Pd 4 d z 2 orbital in PdCo is lower than the lowest energy levels of the Pd 4 d xz and 4 d yz orbitals in pure Pd, significantly decreasing the charge activation energy and achieving a highest energy conversion efficiency of 91%. This finding provides the orbital-level tuning into rational design of highly efficient electrocatalysts for Li-O 2 batteries.

Although lithium–oxygen batteries (LOBs) hold great promise as future energy storage systems, they are impeded by insulated discharge product Li 2 O 2 and sluggish oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution revolution (ORR/OER) kinetics. The application of a highly efficient cathode catalyst determines the LOBs performance. The d-band modulation and catalytic kinetics promotion are important concept guidelines for the performance enhancement of cathode catalysts. In this work, the homogeneous in-plane distortion-derived synergistic catalytic capability of an Ag 2 Mo 2 O 7 catalyst with modulated d-band centers and promoted ORR/OER kinetics is demontrated. The uniform elongation of Ag─O bonds and compression of Mo─O bonds in (020) plane leads to d-band splitting and d-band center optimization and delivers improved adsorption behavior for high ORR/OER capability. Furthermore, the spatial and energy overlap of Ag d xz and O 2 anti-bonding π * orbitals facilitate electron injection during ORR process and reduce the energy barrier for charge transfer and O 2 desorption during OER process, accelerating the ORR/OER kinetics. As a result, the (020) plane-exposed Ag 2 Mo 2 O 7 cathode exhibits ultralong cycle stability of 817 cycles at 500 mA g −1 and large specific discharge/charge capacities of 15898/15180 mAh g −1 . This work provides facile concept guidance for optimizing catalytic capability through controlled lattice distortion in cathode catalysts for LOBs.

Sweet orange oil fractions were prepared by molecular distillation of cold-pressed orange oil from sample A (Citrus sinensis (L.) ‘Hamlin’ from America) and sample B (Citrus sinensis Osbeck ‘Newhall’ from China) respectively, and their fumigant activities against medium workers of red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren) were investigated. The volatile composition of the orange oil fractions was identified and quantified using GC–MS. Fractions from sample A (A1, A2, and A3) contained 23, 37, and 48 chemical constituents, and fractions from sample B (B1, B2, and B3) contained 18, 29, and 26 chemical constituents, respectively. Monoterpenes were the most abundant components, accounting for 73.56% to 94.86% of total orange oil fractions, among which D-limonene (65.28–80.18%), β-pinene (1.71–5.58%), 3-carene (0.41–4.01%), β-phellandrene (0.58–2.10%), and linalool (0.31–2.20%) were major constituents. Fumigant bioassay indicated that all orange oil fractions exerted good fumigant toxicity against workers of fire ants at 3, 5, 10, and 20 mg/centrifuge tubes, and B1 had the strongest insecticidal potential, followed by A1, B2, A2, B3, and A3. The fractions composed of more high volatile molecules (A1 and B1) showed greater fumigant effects than others. Compounds linalool and D-limonene, which were the constituents of the orange oil, exhibited excellent fumigant toxicity against red imported fire ant workers. Linalool killed red imported fire ant workers completely at 5, 10, and 20 mg/tube after 8 h of treatment, and D-limonene induced >86% mortality at 8 h of exposure.

In this work, we proposed one simple and effective chiral-sensing method for the discrimination of carnitine enantiomers. The gold nanorods (AuNRs) were used as colorimetric probes to recognize carnitine enantiomers in this method. l -Carnitine can induce rapidly the blue-to-gray change of AuNR solution color, whereas d -carnitine cannot induce the obvious change of the color. Based on this distinct difference of color, a visual method for recognition of carnitine enantiomers was suggested. This method has been applied to detect the enantiometric excess of l -carnitine in the range of − 100~100%. The presented chiral measurement can be performed with a simple ultraviolet-visible spectrometer and even the naked eyes. In this method, AuNRs need no modification with chiral molecule, and the chiral recognition is based on the inherent chirality of AuNRs. This new method opens up possibility for fast and easy assay of carnitine enantiomers.

Photocatalytic selective oxidation plays an important role in developing green chemistry. However, it is challenging to design an efficient photocatalyst for controlling the selectivity of photocatalytic oxidation reaction and exploring its detailed mechanism. Here, we synthesized three conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with D-A structures, named M−SATE−CMPs (M Zn, Cu and Co), with different d-band centers based on different metal centers, resulting in the discrepancy in adsorption and activation capacities for the reactants, which produces the selectivity of β-keto esters being catalyzed into α-hydroperoxide β-keto esters (ROOH) or to α-hydroxyl β-keto esters (ROH). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrate that the adsorption and activation capacities of the metal active centers in M−SATE−CMPs (M Zn, Cu and Co) for ROOH are the key factors to influence the photocatalytic selective oxidation of β-keto ester. This study provides a promising strategy for designing a metallaphotoredox catalyst whose photocatalytic selectivity depends on the d-band center of metal site in the catalyst.

In our screening program for new agrochemicals from wild plants and Chinese medicinal herbs, Teucrium quadrifarium aerial parts at flowering stage was found to possess strong insecticidal activity against booklice (Liposcelis bostrychophila). Water-distilled essential oil from T. quadrifarium aerial parts was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Fourty-seven components comprising 97.2 % of the total oil were identified and the main components of the essential oil were germacrene D (8.8 %), linalool (8.2 %), camphene (7.8 %), β-caryophyllene (7.3 %), β-cadinene (6.8 %), 1,8-cineole (6.5 %), 4-terpineol (5.8 %), and α-terpineol (5.1 %). The essential oil of T. quadrifarium possessed contact toxicity against L. bostrychophila with a LC50 value of 95.1 μg/cm2. The oil also showed fumigant toxicity against L. bostrychophila with a LC50 value of 222.0 μg/l. These findings suggested that the essential oil of T. quadrifarium aerial parts has potential to be developed as new natural insecticides for the control of grain storage insects.

The red imported fire ant is one of the world’s most devastating invasive species, adversely affecting humans, wildlife, crops, and livestock. To control infestations, chemical pesticides are deployed extensively around the world. However, their extensive use has led to negative effects on the environment and human health. Essential oils, which are safe and ecofriendly, can potentially be used as alternatives to chemical pesticides. In this study, grapefruit essential oils were used as fumigant agents to control red imported fire ants. The crude grapefruit oil (GO1) contained 28 compounds, and the concentrated grapefruit oil (GO2), which was refined from GO1 by vacuum distillation, contained 20 compounds. D-Limonene was the dominant constituent in both GO1 (70.1%) and GO2 (73.96%), and other important constituents included β-pinene, α-pinene, β-phellandrene, octanal, d-carvone, α-terpineol, and linalool. Both the essential oils and their individual constituents (α-pinene, α-terpineol, β-phellandrene, octanal, and d-carvone) showed strong lethal fumigant effects against workers. Workers were more susceptible to GO2 than GO1, and octanal was more toxic to workers as compared with the other four constituents. When antennas of workers were treated with the two oils or the five constituents, their walking and gripping abilities were significantly suppressed, and there was an obvious bending or breaking phenomenon on the sensilla of the antennas. Fumigant activity by grapefruit essential oils and their main compounds were associated with their effects on the walking and gripping behavior of workers, and this confirmed that grapefruit essential oil is a promising, ecofriendly, and safe fumigant for the control of red imported fire ants.

Phloroglucinols of Dryopteris fragrans (L.) Schott plant show strong antifungal activity. In previous work, we isolated a wide range of phloroglucinols from the plant and found that pseudoaspidinol of D. fragrans and its structural modifications (methylphloroglucinol derivatives) showed stronger antifungal activity and confirmed that the butyryl group of these compounds accounted for this activity. In this study, we designed a series of phloroglucinol derivatives ( A1–A9) and methylphloroglucinol derivatives ( B1–B9) by introducing acyl groups with diverse carbon numbers in the C-2 position, synthesized these compounds, and evaluated the anti-dermatophyte activity of compounds A1–A5 and B1–B5 on Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes fungal species. The results showed that compound A5 exhibited the strongest activity. These compounds can be used as leads for the development of new antifungal agents.
