Featured ApplicationThe gram-scale green-emission synthesis of carbon quantum dots not only facilitates environmental management, particularly in the detection of Fe (III) in water, but also holds potential for enhancing composite materials.Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a distinctive class of fluorescent carbon nanomaterials, exhibit considerable potential for widespread application across several industries due to their safety, environmental sustainability, excellent water solubility, and tunable yet stable fluorescence properties. Nevertheless, the mass field is limited, and the cost of production is higher for the majority of methods. This study examines a cost-effective approach for the hydrothermal synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) from wood using NH3·H2O as the nitrogen precursor, facilitated by H2O2and ultraviolet light. The produced N-CQDs demonstrate superior crystallinity and solubility in water, with the average particle size of 5.02 nm. After 10 experiments under the same conditions, a significant and stable yield of 5.04 g (42 wt%) was finally obtained by hydrothermal synthesis. The N-CQDs solution exhibits green fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet light, and its fluorescence performance is influenced by concentration and excitation wavelength. Furthermore, it explores their application in identifying Fe (III) in water. The surface of N-CQDs is abundant in hydrophilic hydroxyl groups, distinctive nitrogen-containing groups, and various oxygen-containing functional groups. Fe (III) can extinguish fluorescence in water. The ratio of fluorescence intensity before and after to the addition of Fe (III) solution to the N-CQDs solution (F0/F) exhibits the effective linear correlation within the concentration range of 0.1 to 100 μmol/L. Within the concentration range of 100 to 1000 μmol/L, the increase in Fe (III) concentration results in substantial aggregation of Fe (III) and N-CQDs, along with a blue shift in the fluorescence wavelength. This discovery possesses significant potential for the synthesis and application of environmentally friendly, high-yield N-CQDs.

Ethylenediamine (EDA)-functionalized nano-Fe 3 O 4 magnetic particle (EDA@nFe 3 O 4 ) was first synthesized by solvothermal method, followed by condensation with 3 kinds of salicylaldehydes, and coordinated with Fe(III) ion to obtain 3 kinds of Fe(III)-Salen (salicylaldehydoethylenediamine)-grafted Fe 3 O 4 magnetic composites (nFe 3 O 4 @Fe(III)Salen). The nFe 3 O 4 @Fe(III)Salen composites were characterized by elementary analyzer, X-ray diffractometer, FTIR, ultraviolet Vis DRS, XPS, transmission electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The results showed that the nFe 3 O 4 @ Fe(III)Salen composites had an average size of ~200 nm, with the saturation magnetization intensity of 20.3–24.8 emu/g. The nFe 3 O 4 @Fe(III)Salen can be used as heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) via Fenton-like reaction under visible light. Radical-trapping experimental results indicated that the • OH radicals were the dominant active oxidizing species in the photoreaction process. The results showed that the highest degradation efficiency to 2,4,6- TCP was found when the nonsubstituted Fe(III)-Salen-grafted composite, nFe 3 O 4 @Fe(III)Salen, was used as catalyst. Further degradation studies indicated that at pH 4.0–7.0, with the usage amount of nFe 3 O 4 @Fe(III)Salen above 0.8 g/L and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) concentration at 8.16–40.8 mmol/L, the degradation of 2,4,6-TCP with initial concentration less than 50.0 mg/L (253.2 mg/L) can reach almost 100% under the nFe 3 O 4 @Fe(III)Salen/H 2 O 2 /vis system within 5 min, which showed a wider pH range than that of normal Fenton system. nFe 3 O 4 @Fe(III)Salencan be reused after regeneration for at least 5 times (with degradation percentage of 2,4,6-TCP over 95%). It is a potential effective and reusable material for catalytic degradation of 2,4,6-TCP.

The simultaneous oxidation performance of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) by nanoscale calcium peroxide particles (nCaO 2 ) activated with ferric ions (Fe(III)) and the mechanism of the enhancement of BTEX degradation by L-cysteine (L-cys) were investigated. The batch experimental results showed that the nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys process was effective in the destruction of BTEX in both ultrapure water and actual groundwater. A proper amount of L-cys could enhance BTEX degradation due to the promotion of Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycles by the participation of L-cys, but an excessive presence of L-cys would cause inhibition. Adding 1.0 mM L-cys to the nCaO 2 /Fe(III) system, the concentration of Fe(II) increased to 1.15 mM instantly. Simultaneously, the yield of HO• produced by the 1.0 mM L-cys-containing system was 0.066 mM at 180 min reaction, higher than that without L-cys (0.049 mM). When excess L-cys (5.0 mM) was added to the system, the amount of Fe(II) increased to 3.73 mM because excessive L-cys caused a large amount of Fe(III) in the system to be reduced. However, the yield of HO• decreased to 0.043 mM since excessive Fe(II) could conversely scavenge HO• to produce Fe(III) again. EPR tests and quenching results indicated that HO• was the dominant reactive species in the nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys system. For the removal of BTEX, the optimal molar ratio of nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys was 10.5/20/1 based on calculation by response surface methodology (RSM). Finally, the BTEX destruction pathway was proposed according to the detected intermediates by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). nCaO 2 /Fe(III) system with L-cysteine (L-cys) was applied to remediate mixed contaminants. A suitable amount of L-cys promoted redox cycling (Fe(III) → Fe(II)). The mechanism of enhancing or inhibiting hydroxyl radical generation was investigated. Proposed BTEX destruction pathway in the nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys system. nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys system was recommended for BTEX-contaminated actual groundwater remediation.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), particularly zinc-manganese (Zn-Mn) systems, hold great promise for large-scale energy storage but face challenges from parasitic reactions of the anode and poor conductivity of the cathode. Herein, a multifunctional additive naphthol green B (NGB), which contains a planar organic group and a transition metal ion, is applied to concurrently address anode and cathode issues during battery cycling. Specifically, the adsorption and partial decomposition of the planar organic group construct a hierarchical interfacial layer on the anode surface, comprising an organic outer phase and an inorganic inner phase, assists to alleviate side reactions and modulate zinc deposition. Meanwhile, Fe 3+ ions released from NGB incorporate into the α-MnO 2 cathode during discharge, increasing oxygen defects and lowering the Mn average oxidation state, which improves the structural stability and electrical conductivity of the Mn-based cathode, further boosting capacity and cycling performance. Consequently, the Zn‖Zn cell demonstrates stable operation for 3500 h at 1 mA cm −2 , and the Zn‖Cu cell achieves an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.87% over 2500 cycles at 5 mA cm −2 . Notably, the Zn‖MnO 2 cell employing modified electrolyte exhibits no capacity decay after cycling 250 and 1000 times at 0.2 and 1 A g −1 , respectively. This work presents new perspectives on simultaneously addressing anode and cathode issues in AZIBs based on electrolyte engineering, highlighting the function of the additive structure and composition.

Fe–based metal–organic frameworks (Fe–MOFs) have been widely used in heterogeneous Fenton-like processes. However, the catalytic performance of Fe-MOFs is limited by the relatively slow Fe (III)/Fe (II) redox cycle. For Fe-MOFs, increasing the interfacial electron transfer and reducing the electron density of Fe-MOFs are expected to accelerate the reduction of Fe (III) and improve the catalytic performance. Here, by mixing Fe/Cu metal species and introducing bromine groups, we successfully prepared bromine-functionalized bimetallic MOFs–FeCu(BDC-Br), and we used it to effectively degrade phenol in a Fenton-like process. Compared with most other catalysts, FeCu(BDC-Br) achieved a higher phenol degradation kinetic rate of 0.106 min –1 at a low dose. Effects of pH, humic acid (HA) and coexisting ions on the degradation of phenol were examined. The FeCu(BDC-Br) /H 2 O 2 system can remove phenol in the near neutral pH range of 4–6 and 0–50 mg/L HA range. Chloride ion , sulfate, or phosphate with a concentration of 100 mg/L showed an inhibitory effect on the catalytical performance of phenol degradation. This work provides insights for the preparation of Fe-MOFs Fenton-like catalyst in water/wastewater treatment.

High-performance nanofiltration (NF) membrane plays a key role in Li + /Mg 2+ separation process. In this work, a new NF membrane with positively and negatively charged groups was prepared by grafting p-aminosalicylic acid (AS) onto the surface of polyamide (PA) membrane followed by chelation with Fe 3+ ions for Li + /Mg 2+ separation. The AS grafting (PA-g-AS) and Fe 3+ chelating (PA-g-AS-Fe) NF membranes had almost same surface and section structure and surface pore size as the PA membrane. But Zeta potential (about −8 mV at pH 7) of the obtained PA-g-AS-Fe membrane was improved in comparison with the PA and PA-g-AS NF (about −20 mV at pH 7) membranes due to Fe 3+ addition, suggesting that there were positively and negatively charged groups on the membrane surface. The PA-g-AS-Fe membrane showed a high Mg 2+ rejection of 97.7% and high Li + permeation (negative rejection of −87.6%); while a high Li + /Mg 2+ separation factor (S Li , Mg ) of about 81.5 was achieved, which is much higher than those for PA and PA-g-AS NF membranes and surpassed those of the results reported in literature. The fluxes of three membranes were about the same. The results demonstrated the NF membrane with positively and negatively charged groups was suitable for efficient separation of Li + /Mg 2+ and would have promising applications in recovery of lithium from brine.

Metal ions are key components in atmosphere that potentially affect the optical properties and photochemical reactivity of atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS), while this mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that atmospheric HULIS coupled with Fe3+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Al3+ exhibited distinct optical properties and reactive intermediates from that of HULIS utilizing three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The HULIS components showed light absorption that increased by 56% for the HULIS-Fe3+ system, fluorescence blue shift, and fluorescence quenching, showing a certain dose–effect relationship. These are mainly attributed to the fact that the highly oxidative HULIS chromophores have a stronger complexing ability with Fe3+ ions than the other metal ions. In addition, triplet organics (promoting ratio: 53%) and reactive oxygen species (promoting ratio: 82.6%) in the HULIS-Fe3+ system showed obvious generation promotion. Therefore, the main assumption of the photochemical mechanisms of atmospheric HULIS in the HULIS-Fe3+ system is that Fe3+ ions can form 3HULIS*-Fe3+ complexation with photoexcited 3HULIS* and then transition to the ground state through energy transfer, electron transfer, or nonradiative transition, accompanied by the formation of singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals. Our results provide references for evaluating the radiative forcing and aging effect of metal ions on atmospheric aerosols.

In order to accelerate the photo-Fenton reaction process of Fe(III) under visible light irradiation, BiOI was introduced into the Fe(III)/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system. The catalytic oxidation performance of vis-light/BiOI/Fe(III)/PDS system was evaluated using bisphenol AF (BPAF) as a representative organic contaminant . Within 30 min, nearly 100% of BPAF was degraded, proving that the system had an excellent ability to degrade organic pollutants in water. Free radical quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR), and molecular probing experiments determined that the main reactive species in the system were hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ). The comparative experiments showed that the degradation rates were closely related to the PDS consumption, while the Fe(II) absorbed on the surface of BiOI was responsible for the PDS consumption. The production pathway of Fe(II) was analyzed by XRD, FTIR and XPS characterization, the Fe(III) on the surface of BiOI was reduced by photogenerated electrons to generate Fe(II). The result confirmed that the reduction of Fe(III) by photogenerated electrons could effectively inhibit the recombination of electron-hole pairs, and accelerate the reduction progress of Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle that was the rate-limiting step in PDS activation. Afterwards, a reliable mechanism for degradation of BPAF in visible light/BiOI/Fe(III)/PDS system was proposed. Finally, the influence of reactant dosages, visible light intensity , initial pH, humic acid (HA) and anions in the solution on the degradation of BPAF were discussed.

Effective removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) has long been an urgent task for protecting human health and environment. In this study, novel magnetic mesoporous Fe Mn binary oxides (MMFMs) were fabricated via calcinating the Mn encapsulated carboxymethyl cellulose-Fe(III) hydrogel, and the structure of MMFMs were closely related to the Fe:Mn ratio. Owing to the mesoporous structure together with synergistic effect of Fe Mn binary component, the MMFMs exhibited excellent mass transfer and adsorption ability to Sb(III) and Sb(V). MMFM 3 achieved a maximum Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption capacity of 281.5 and 204.6 mg/g, respectively. Co-existing anions of Cl − , NO 3 − and SO 4 2− exhibited marginal influence on the adsorption for both Sb(III) and Sb(V), except the PO 4 3− for Sb(III) and SiO 3 2− or PO 4 3− for Sb(V). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation revealed that high valence Mn(IV) was mainly responsible for the oxidation transformation of the highly toxic Sb(III) into less toxic Sb(V), while the FeO x content played major role for the adsorption of Sb(V). The generated inner-sphere Fe O Sb complex between Fe-OH groups and Sb(III/V) dominantly contributed to the removal of Sb(III/V). Overall, mesoporous structure, magnetic separation ability, excellent adsorption performance together with exceptional regeneration properties demonstrated the great potential of MMFMs for Sb(III/V) remediation.

In this study, a matrix composite material of CdZnS and α-FeOOH on carbon cloth (CZS@FeOOH@CC) was prepared by a hydrothermal method , and was used for the degradation of As(III). The composite material has good photocatalytic activity of removing As(III) in the presence of oxalate. CZS@FeOOH@CC can completely degrade 10 mg/L As(III) within 10 min under visible light irradiation. The influence factors of CZS@FeOOH@CC composite material on catalytic oxidation of As(III) were also studied in the oxalate system. The photocatalytic oxidation efficiency of As(III) is affected by the oxalate concentration in the reaction system, and the atmosphere plays a major role in the degradation of As(III). Under visible light, oxalate first combines with Fe(III) on the surface of iron oxide to form Fe(III)-oxalate complex, and then the Fe(III)-oxalate composite is activated to produce·C 2 O 4 − . In the presence of oxygen, Fe(II) readily reacts with O 2 and oxidizes to Fe(III). The introduction of CdZnS promoted the separation of interfacial electron holes, and accelerated the REDOX cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III). This study provides a feasible and simple method for accelerating the catalytic removal of heavy metals from wastewater by iron-based materials.

The exploration of a dual-functional sensor is the key to effectively detect the Cr(VI) and Fe(III) cations in water, which is important to human health and environmental sustainability. Because of the phase stability and excellent luminescence, the rare-earth coordination polymers have great potential as dual-functional sensors. Here, we develop a Y 0.91 Eu 0.09 (H 2 O) 2 {C 6 H 3 (CO 2 ) 3 }(MIL-92(Y):9%Eu 3+ )-based dual-function luminescent sensor on Cr(VI) and Fe(III), which exhibits excellent phase stability and dispersibility in water. The luminescence of MIL-92(Y):9%Eu 3+ aqueous suspension quenches on Fe 3+ with Stern-Volmer constant K sv of 1.79 × 10 3 M -1 and limit of detection of 17 μM. The MIL-92(Y):9%Eu 3+ aqueous suspension also has turn-off sensing ability towards Cr 2 O 7 2- and CrO 4 2- with K sv values of 3.5 × 10 3 and 6.14 × 10 3 M -1 , respectively. It has detection limitations of 10 and 5 μM on Cr 2 O 7 2- and Cr 2 O 7 2- ions, respectively.

A Morchella-like hierarchical porous Fe-doping magnesium hydroxide (Fe(III)-PMH) was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal process using iron-bearing brucite with the modulation of recyclable L-threonate. The L-threonate facilitated formatting Morchella-like porous structure through controlling specific lattice plane of Mg(OH) 2 . The as-prepared Fe(III)-PMH features a high specific surface area porous structure and even distribution of steady Fe(III) active sites doped in Mg(OH) 2 lattice, contributing to its degradation of amphoteric antibiotics or anionic dyes in the presence of H 2 O 2 . The surface alkalinity of Fe(III)-PMH drives the anionic conversion of amphoteric antibiotics or enhances the ionization of anionic dyes. Then these anionic contaminants are rapidly absorbed and oxidized in situ on the positively charged surface of Fe(III)-PMH. For the stable presence of superoxide radicals in Fe(III)-PMH/H 2 O 2 system, a wide range of working pH was obtained (pH 3–11). Moreover, a negligible amount of leached iron ions, and excellent reusability make it durable and promising for industrial applications. This work provides a simple and low-cost preparation of heterogeneous catalysts with good performance, especially for the highly effective enhanced Fenton-like system in the wastewater treatment of amphoteric antibiotics and anionic dyes.
