Ferric ion (Fe 3+ ) detection in biological and aqueous systems demands sensitive and rapid analytical tools. Although carbon dots (CDs) serve as effective fluorescent probes for Fe 3+ , CDs-based membrane sensors combining fast response with high sensitivity remain underdeveloped. We engineered a CDs-grafted polyvinylidene fluoride/sodium alginate composite membrane (CD- g -PVDF/SA) via phase inversion and surface grafting for Fe 3+ monitoring. The membrane demonstrated linear fluorescence quenching proportional to Fe 3+ concentration to 600 μM (R 2 = 0.995) with a detection limit of 0.10 μM. Significant quenching occurred within 1 min, facilitated by the porous architecture and carboxyl-rich surface that enhanced Fe 3+ accumulation through chelation. This enabled rapid electron transfer from CDs to bound Fe 3+ . The sensor showed Fe 3+ selectivity against interferents in complex matrices, including real water samples. EDTA-mediated Fe 3+ elution fully restored fluorescence, confirming reusability for over fifity cycles. CD- g -PVDF/SA membranes thus offer a robust platform for reliable Fe 3+ detection in environmental and biological applications.

The reasonable design of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts that simultaneously combine low energy consumption, high activity, and long-term durability under industrial-level conditions is crucial for the practical deployment of water electrolysis for hydrogen production. In the present work, a novel spontaneous electrochemical corrosion (SEC) strategy is employed to in-situ prepare the well-aligned NiFe-based (oxy)hydroxides nanosheet array film on Ni foam (NiFe-OH/NF). The resulting electrode can be fabricated at a cost of only $0.0058 per cm 2 and is readily scalable. Operating as an OER catalyst in alkaline solution, NiFe-OH/NF requires an overpotential of merely 213 ± 2 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 . More importantly, the SEC-derived NiFe-OH/NF exhibits a dynamic Fe-replenishment process during OER, in which dissolved Fe species are partially reincorporated into the catalyst surface, thereby mitigating deactivation and enabling superior durability. As a result, NiFe-OH/NF operates stably for more than 126 days (> 3024 h) at an industrial-level current density of 500 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH containing 0.1 mM Fe 3+ . This work demonstrates a low-cost and scalable route to NiFe-based OER electrodes that simultaneously deliver competitive activity and remarkable durability, offering strong promise for practical alkaline water electrolysis. It presents a breakthrough to expand the commercial application of H 2 through designing an industrial-level oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrode (NiFe-OH/NF) by a novel spontaneous electrochemical corrosion strategy, which simultaneously addresses the critical challenges of low energy consumption, high activity, and long-term durability in alkaline water electrolysis. Carbon dots (CDs) are suitable for metal ion detection owing to their distinct optical tunability, structural controllability, and varied fluorescence response mechanisms. This research produced blue-fluorescent carbon dots (B-CDs) and red-fluorescent carbon dots (R-CDs) by a one-step microwave-assisted technique. B-CDs specifically recognized Cu 2+ in an aqueous system, while R-CDs exhibited a distinctly selective response to Fe 3+ . Composite carbon quantum dots (B/R-CDs) with purple fluorescence were synthesized by integrating B-CDs and R-CDs, achieving superior dual-metal ion detection capabilities. Using B/R-CDs with dual fluorescence emission peaks, and by monitoring the changes in their ratio fluorescence signals, the designed ion detection system can simultaneously detect Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ in aqueous solutions. The detection process for the two metal ions corresponds to distinct dynamic quenching behaviors of the B/R-CDs. Specifically, Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ form unique coordination structures with the functional groups of the B/R-CDs, leading to different energy level arrangements. This not only enables the discriminative detection of the two metal ions by the B/R-CDs but also ensures immunity from interference by other metal ions. The synthesized dual-emissive B/R-CDs material can be prepared as a single reagent for the quantitative detection of two trace metal ions. Furthermore, test strips and test inks developed with it as the primary component enable semi-quantitative and visual detection.

Surface segregation is increasingly positioned as an in-situ modification strategy for engineering membranes with high hydrophilicity and enhanced selectivity. Herein, we propose a reaction enhanced surface segregation method mediated by complexation interaction to fabricate antifouling nanofiltration membrane for molecule/ion separation. The hydrophilic phytic acid (PA) is used as surface segregation agents in the casting solution, Fe 3+ with strong complexation capacity is used as the crosslinker in the coagulation bath. The complexation of PA with Fe 3+ improves PA surface segregation, immobilizing the PA-Fe 3+ complexes onto the membrane surface to construct hydrophilic and crosslinked separation layer. As a result, the optimized membrane possesses exceptional performance including high water permeability of 253 L/(m 2 h bar), high dye rejections (Methyl Blue: 97.9 %, Sunset Yellow: 96.3 %, Acid Fuchsin: 95.5 %, Methyl Orange: 78.8 %), dye/salt separation factor exceeding 300 and flux recovery ratio exceeding 95 % against surfactant-stabilized pump oil-in-water emulsion. Meanwhile, the membrane maintains high methyl blue rejection and low NaCl rejection during 168 h continuous filtration of a mixed solution (100 ppm methyl blue/1000 ppm NaCl). This study may establish a novel strategy for fabricating high permeability, selective and antifouling nanofiltration membrane by reaction enhanced surface segregation method.

A major challenge in preparing nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) from the world’s most abundant material, cellulose, is its limited chemical accessibility, which results in low yield and low quantum yield (QY) of the obtained N-CDs. Herein, we showed that the overall yield and QY of N-CDs from dissolving pulp were significantly improved from 2.9% and 9.7% to 16.1% and 30.3% with an oxidation treatment. The efficient synthesis of N-CDs from dissolving pulp was attributed to the enhanced chemical accessibility of cellulose by the oxidation process. The obtained N-CDs showed a graphite-like structure rich in carboxyl and amino functional groups. They were well monodispersed spherical nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 1.86 nm. Also, the as-prepared N-CDs showed excellent selective and sensitive response to Fe 3+ ions with the detection limit of 1.14 μM. In addition, vitro cytotoxicity test indicated the non-toxicity of N-CDs which enabled their success as fluorescent probe for bio-imaging of Vero cells. Summarily, this study presented an improved strategy to synthesize advanced materials with potential application in sensor, bioimaging and biomedical from the world’s most abundant, cheapest, green and renewable materials-cellulose.

Complex 1 and 2 exhibit excellent red and green fluorescence, respectively. • Complexes 1 and 2 exhibit excellent selectivity towards Fe 3+ . • Complex 1 and 2 have good recognition of I - and F - in anions, respectively. • Complex 2 can achieve naked eye recognition of F - . To further advance research on rare earth complexes as Luminescent probes, this work investigates the cation and anion recognition capabilities of europium and terbium carboxylate complexes, Eu(ocpia) ( 1 ) and Tb(ocpia) ( 2 ), in dispersed systems. Cation recognition experiments were performed using DMF as the dispersion medium, with the complex concentration fixed at 0.2 mg/mL. Results demonstrate that both complexes 1 and 2 exhibit excellent selectivity for Fe³⁺, with detection limits as low as 0.076 μM and 0.069 μM, respectively. These findings indicate that complexes 1 and 2 hold great potential as fluorescent probes for Fe³⁺ detection. Anion recognition experiments were conducted in acetonitrile dispersion (0.2 mg/mL complex concentration). Complex 1 shows high selectivity for I⁻, achieving a detection limit of 0.052 μM. In contrast, complex 2 displays strong affinity for F⁻, with a detection limit of 0.087 μM. Notably, F⁻ can coordinate with complex 2 to form a soluble adduct, enabling visual, naked-eye recognition of F⁻. Collectively, these results highlight the promising application of complexes 1 and 2 as selective fluorescent probes for I⁻ and F⁻, respectively. Eu and Tb complexes exhibit excellent red and green fluorescence, respectively, and both have excellent recognition for Fe 3+ . Near-infrared persistent luminescent (NIR PersL) materials, owing to the advantages of persistent emission and elimination of biological tissue autofluorescence, have garnered substantial research interest in bioimaging and biomedical fields. Nevertheless, high-performance NIR PersL materials remain scarce, which limits the applications of NIR PersL. Herein, we have developed a novel Fe 3+ -activated olivine-type PersL material, Li 2 ZnGeO 4 :Fe 3+ (LZGO:Fe 3+ ), which exhibits NIR PersL at around 770 nm. The representative sample LZGO:0.1%Fe 3+ has a duration exceeding 10 h after 254 nm light excitation. First-principles calculations demonstrate that Fe 3+ preferentially occupies Ge 4+ sites, and the main electron trap mediating the PersL is the oxygen vacancy. Additionally, by analyzing the temperature-dependent PersL decay curves across a wide temperature range (80–460 K), we have elucidated the relationship between electron transport processes and temperature, thereby refining the mechanistic framework of PersL under dynamic conditions. The potential applications of LZGO:Fe 3+ in bioimaging are explored and demonstrated. This work is anticipated to drive the research of NIR PersL materials toward versatile bioapplications.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) fluorescent materials have significant advantages in detecting organic pollutants and metal ion pollution. A zinc metal organic framework nanofiber fluorescent membrane (Zn(Eu)-MOF@PAN NFM) was prepared by doping the lanthanide metal Eu using an electrospinning and impregnation process. The structure and morphology of the membrane was characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR and XPS. The results show that the membrane has good fluorescence performance and can successfully and efficiently detect nitrobenzene (NB; detection limit = 0.861 ppm, K sv = 0.143 ppm −1 ), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP; detection limit = 0.631 ppm, K sv = 0.178 ppm −1 ), benzaldehyde (BA; detection limit = 0.981 ppm, K sv = 0.051 ppm −1 ) and Fe 3+ ions (detection limit = 3.418 ppm, K sv = 3.210×10 −3 ppm −1 ) in solution. In terms of repeatability and stability, the test results are obviously better than the property of the powder.

The lead-free double perovskite with low toxicity and good performance stability has attracted much attention in optoelectronic device applications. But their photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) are low, which limits their applications. Co-doping and alloying are the most valuable methods to improve its PLQY and stability. In this study, we successfully synthesized Bi 3+ and Fe 3+ co-doped Cs 2 Ag 0.6 Na 0.4 InCl 6 double perovskite using the hydrothermal method , and the emission mechanism was further investigated. Under UV-light excitation, the Cs 2 Ag 0.6 Na 0.4 InCl 6 : Bi 3+ /Fe 3+ shows dual emission. This emission results from the modification effect of self-trapped exciton (STE) formation, and Fe 3+ induces longer wavelength emission. By changing the doping contents of Bi 3+ and Fe 3+ , the revolution of double perovskite color from yellow to orange-red can be observed, and its PLQY is up to 39.95%. The studies of the PL emission mechanism reveal that energy transfer occurs between the STE and Fe 3+ , and different doping contents can affect this transfer mechanism. This work has implications for producing double perovskite for optoelectronic semiconductors and provides direction for designing new lead-free double perovskites.

As kanamycin (KAN) residue in animal products is harmful to consumers, a rapid and sensitive method for KAN detection needs to be established. KAN monoclonal antibody (KAN-mAb, 1D11) with the half maximal inhibitory concentration of 1.16 ng/mL was prepared in this study. A one-pot method was used to synthesize Fe 3+ -chelated polydopamine nanospheres (Fe@PDANs) with excellent characteristics of strong light absorption. The novel label of Fe@PDANs and KAN-mAb was used to develop a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for the sensitive detection of KAN. The limit of detection of the Fe@PDANs-based LFIA (Fe@PDANs-LFIA) for KAN was 0.0191 ng/mL, which was 2.75 times lower than PDANs-based LFIA. Furthermore, the Fe@PDANs-LFIA was successfully applied to detect KAN in pork, milk, and honey samples, with recoveries ranging from 93.75% to 113.80% (coefficient of variation < 10%). Therefore, Fe@PDANs have potential for the detection of analytes in LFIA.

Naphthol hydrazone derivatives are recognized as efficient chelating agents for both qualitative and quantitative detection of metal ions. Here we design a naphthol hydrazine-based chemosensor with covalently linking a strong electron-withdrawing benzothiadiazole group to modulate the molecular electronic structure, nominated as NtHzBtd . The fluorescent probe performs excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe 3+ with 1:1 binding stoichiometry, while exhibiting a quick response at 55 s with a relatively low limit of detection of 0.036 µM. A series of spectroscopic measurements in tandem with theoretical calculations suggest that the probe undergoes both intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and chelation enhanced quenching (CHEQ) processes. Successful color rendering of paper strips and bioimaging in PC3 cells demonstrate the promising applicability of NtHzBtd for portable Fe 3+ detection in real samples and biosystems.
