Controllable synthesis of hierarchical porous mullite fiber network for gas filtration

Qingzhao Liu,Tao Xue,Lina Yang,Xiaoxia Hu,Haiyan Du

The hierarchical network was prepared by firing the mixture of mullite fiber and a kind of active powder which was made up of alumina gel, silica gel and AlF 3 powder. During which, the smooth surface of mullite fiber was coated with the secondary structure which was controllable by adjusting the firing temperature or by changing the mass ratio of active powder/mullite fiber. The secondary structure created new pore size distribution for the network. Some new pores with diameters of about 1   μm were found in the modified network, while the network constructed by the smooth mullite fiber only had pores with diameters of about 50   μm. Because of the introduction of the secondary structure, the particle filtration efficiency of the network substantially increased. The filtration efficiency for the 0.5   μm particles increased from 12.9% to 94.2%. The filtration efficiency for the 0.3   μm particles also increased from 0.6% to 56.6%.

A novel cellulose–silicalite-1 membrane with excellent gas separation property

Xin-ling Fu,Ming Zeng,Jian-bo Zhou,Chao Xu

A novel strategy for synthesizing silicalite-1 membrane by hydrothermal synthesis without organic template after coating the support with a mixture of modified cellulose and seeds was successfully proposed. The membrane possesses high ideal separation factors of H2 over various gases which is larger than the corresponding Knudsen diffusion coefficients. The selectivity of AcOH from AcOH/H2O mixtures can reach to 65 and stable for 180 h. The characterization results by XRD and SEM showed that the excellent performance can be attributed to both modified cellulose and the synthesis without organic template. Modified cellulose attracted more silicalite-1 nutrients to the support and assisted the synthesis of more compact silicalite-1 zeolite membrane. Calcination after synthesis was avoided, thus avoiding macrostructure defects appearing during the process of calcination.

Adsorption Equilibria of C1–C4 from Natural Gas on Graphene Sheets

Xueli Zhang,Yan Sun,Wei Su,Xueyuan Wang

As a new kind of adsorbent, graphene sheets (GS) possess large surface areas and excellent adsorption properties. To investigate the adsorption equilibria of C1–C4 from natural gas on GS and fit the isotherms by the Langmuir–Freundlich equation. GS were synthesized with a specific surface area of 805 m2/g and a specific pore volume of 1.03 cm3/g. The adsorption isotherms were measured using a volumetric method at five different temperatures between 263.15 and 303.15 K and at pressures of 0–6 MPa for CH4, 0–1.6 MPa for C2H6, 0–0.3 MPa for C3H8, and 0–0.05 MPa for C4H10. It was shown that, for all four hydrocarbons, the amount of adsorption decreased gradually as the temperature increased. The isotherms were described well by the Langmuir–Freundlich equation. The isosteric heat of adsorption values decreased in the order C4H10 > C3H8 > C2H6 > CH4 which was consistent with those of the extreme heats of adsorption. This suggests that the adsorption capacities of C1–C4 on GS decreased in the order C4H10 > C3H8 > C2H6 > CH4.

In-situ catalytic oxidation of Hg0 via a gas diffusion electrode

Yi Xu,Limei Cao,Wei Sun,Ji Yang

A diffusion electrochemical reactor was proposed to remove elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) from coal-fired flue gas. The experiments were carried out in an undivided column reactor with a self-made gas diffusion electrode (GDE) as cathode and Ti/IrO 2 as anode. Hg 0 was oxidized when the simulated gas passed through GDE. It turned out that the removal of Hg 0 in electrochemical process was dominated by electro-generated H 2 O 2 and free radicals on GDE interface or in the electrolyte. Under 70   °C, Hg 0 removal efficiency exceeded 90% after 40   min electrolysis. The effects of operation parameters were investigated and the results demonstrated that voltage, gas flow rate, and initial concentration of Hg 0 had significant influences on Hg 0 removal, especially the reaction temperature, electrolyte concentration and pH. H 2 O 2 and HO in the electrolyte were measured by UV–vis spectrophotometer and electron spin resonance (ESR), respectively. The above results show that electrochemical technique is a promising method for emission control of Hg 0 from coal-fired flue gas.

Gas Sensing with Er-doped ZnFe2O4 Nanofibers Prepared by Facile Electrospinning

Yue Lei,Wang Bo,Huang Yiheng,Feng Changhao

In this study, gas sensors based on Er-doped ZnFe 2 O 4 nanofibers (E-ZFO NFs) with varying ratios of Er doping were prepared by a facile electrospinning approach. The sensor based on 3% E-ZFO NFs demonstrated an enhanced response value of 30.3 for 100 ppm n -butanol at 175°C, with response and recovery times of 9 s and 94 s, respectively. This is approximately 3.1 times that of undoped ZFO NFs. Moreover, the sensor exhibited a minimum detection limit of 0.1 ppm, with excellent repeatability and selectivity. These results indicate that the sensors utilizing E-ZFO NFs are promising candidates for n -butanol gas sensors.

High Selectivity MEMS C2H2 Sensor for Transformer Fault Characteristic Gas Detection**

Yifeng Xu,Haixia Mei,Yu Bing,Fuyun Zhang,Ning Sui,Tingting Zhou,Xiaopeng Fan,Lijie Wang,Tong Zhang

Graphical In this article, a Sm−Pd bimetal doped SnO 2 -based MEMS C 2 H 2 sensor was prepared for detecting dissolved acetylene gas in transformer oil. It has the unique advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity and low power consumption. Acetylene (C 2 H 2 ), as an important characteristic gas in transformer fault diagnosis, should be accurately detected and effectively distinguished from other dissolved gases (H 2 , CH 4 , C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , CO, CO 2 ), which is crucial to determine whether the fault occurs and the fault type, but also faces challenges now. The rational design and employment of rare earth and noble metals are expected to address this issue. In this work, SnO 2 -3 at% Sm 2 O 3 -1 at% PdO based MEMS gas sensor was prepared to achieve high performance detection of C 2 H 2 which has a response value of 56 to 50 ppm C 2 H 2 , response/recovery time of 2 s/136 s, lower detection limit of 1 ppm, power consumption of 15.5 mW, and weak cross sensitivity to other transformer fault characteristic gases. Lewis acids and bases theory was used to explain the reason why rare earth Sm is a benefit element to improve selectivity to C 2 H 2 . The formation of oxygen vacancies and hetero junctions was used to explain the increased sensitivity of the material. This study proved the feasibility of rare earth and noble metals as potential additives to enable advanced gas-sensitive materials for highly selective transformer fault characteristic gas C 2 H 2 detection.

Yi Luo,Jianfeng Li,Juanxia He,Xuling Song,Bei Xu,Zhijun Zhang,Jiamin Zhao,Yuxin Xie,Yaqi Zhang,Zhengfeng Wang,Baijun Shang,Minxin Zhou,Shuangxi Nie,Shuangfei Wang,Qingshan Duan

Ammonia (NH 3 ) detection is crucial to ensure health safety and food quality. Real-time NH 3 detection in food circulation faces challenges such as low sensitivity and instability under different conditions. This study proposes an integrated NH 3 sensor based on triboelectric nanogenerators, in which the NH 3 -sensitive triboelectric material is formed by is in situ grown of polyaniline (PANI) on a SnO 2 -doped balsa scaffold. The balsa scaffold/PANI/SnO 2 sensor demonstrates excellent stability under wide operating range (25 %–99 % RH, −20 to 20 °C) and can detect NH 3 in real-time. The conductive network formed by the in-situ growth of PANI significantly enhances the electrical output performance. Thanks to the large specific surface area of the porous structure of natural balsa scaffold and gas-sensing enhancement of PANI/ SnO 2 heterojunction, the composite exhibits a strong NH 3 response and a low detection limit. The sensor shows a 41.5 % response at 100 ppm NH 3 concentration, a 30 % improvement compared to that of the balsa scaffold/PANI sensor, and a minimal detection limit of 5 ppm. Additionally, the triboelectric gas sensor as a wireless sensing terminal in smart devices successfully detects the food spoilage process in real-time to the user interface. This study introduces a novel approach for developing natural wood-based gas sensors, highlighting their potential in real-time food quality monitoring.

In-situ generation and stabilization of gas bubbles for multiphase catalysis

Zhengsong Hu,Yiquan Chen,Jie Xu,Jiajia Hao,Haifeng Bao,Xiufang Li,Renchuan You,Ze Xiong,Hengquan Yang,Haolan Xu

Introducing stable gas bubbles in liquid is important for the industrial synthesis of chemicals and intermediates via multiphase reactions because of limited solubility of gaseous reactants such as H 2 and O 2 . Herein, a bubble-stabilized system is constructed via in-situ nucleation of bubbles at the surfaces of various polymer nanofibers that circumvents the repulsive interactions between gas–liquid interfaces and nanofibers. During bubble growth processes, nanofibers are self-assembled and interwoven to build spatial nanofiber network surrounding bubbles, firmly trapping bubbles in the liquid phase. Surprisingly, the immobilization of bubbles in liquid can be sustained up to 20 h. These trapped bubbles can serve as gas storage vessels to remarkably boost the multiphase reactions because of the adequate gas–liquid–solid contact sites as demonstrated by the multiphase nitroarenes reduction in contrast to the bubble-free system. Furthermore, the immobilized bubbles are almost completely utilized (98.9 %) in multiphase reactions. This work provides an enlightenment for capturing and storing bubbles in liquid towards industrial multiphase reactions.

Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 from Simulated Flue Gas with Colored Anatase

Yebin Guan,Ming Xia,Alessandro Marchetti,Xiaohong Wang,Weicheng Cao,Hanxi Guan,Xueqian Kong

Photocatalytic reduction with sunlight is an economical and promising advanced approach for reducing the excessive emissions of CO2from the combustion of fossil fuels. Aimed at practical applications, a type of inexpensive colored anatase material was used to evaluate CO2photoreduction performance on a platform with a continuous flow of gas mixtures (10 vol % CO2, 90% N2), which resembles realistic flue gas conditions. The results showed an enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with standard P25 and significant improvement over pristine anatase. Based on a series of characterization techniques, we propose that the oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups on colored anatase can reduce the bandgap and assist the binding of CO2molecules. Our results showed that photoreduction of CO2is feasible under practical conditions, and the efficiency could be improved through modification of catalysts. Keywords:photocatalytic reduction;TiO2;anatase;CO2;flue gas

Enhanced acetone gas sensors based on Pt-modified Co3O4/CoMoO4 heterojunctions

Zijie Su,Zhihua Zhao,Guixin Jin,Wei Chen,Xiaoqing Shen,Lan Wu

The focus of this work is to develop a sensitive and reliable acetone gas sensor using the Pt-modified Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 heterojunction derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Pt-loaded Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 heterojunction was successfully prepared by the surface redox method, and the composites exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for acetone with a low detection limit. By modifying the Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 material with platinum loading, the sensor achieved a response of 24.12 to 20 ppm acetone, which was significantly better than that of the pure Co 3 O 4 /CoMoO 4 heterojunction. This work not only improves acetone detection strategies, but also enhances the potential for industrial and medical VOC monitoring applications.

Biologically templated Fe2O3–CuO heterojunction for ppb-level styrene gas detection

Zhijia Liao,Tianyao Qi,Haocheng Li,Zhenyu Yuan,Hongliang Gao,Fanli Meng

The widespread industrial use of styrene highlights the urgent need for detecting and monitoring its harmful gases. The innovation of this study lies in synthesizing uniform Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles using Ginkgo biloba and calcining them with CuOHF to prepare nanostructured materials, enhancing the performance of gas sensors. The effects of varying α-Fe 2 O 3 additions and calcination temperatures on the structure and gas-sensitive properties of the composites were systematically investigated. The results revealed that the optimal operating temperatures of the CuO–10%Fe 2 O 3 -400 sensor were reduced by 80 and 50 °C, and its response to 100 ppm styrene at 200 °C was significantly enhanced by 3.2-fold and 4.2-fold, respectively, compared to the single Fe 2 O 3 and CuOHF sensors. It is particularly noteworthy that the sensor exhibits excellent detection performance at a 50 ppb styrene concentration, with a response value of 1.2. The lamellar structure of CuOHF serves as a precursor for CuO, thereby increasing the surface area of the sensor in contact with the gas. During the calcination process, the released gases contribute to the formation of a porous structure, which together improves the adsorption capacity and stability of the sensor. Additionally, the heterojunction formed by the calcination of CuO (p-type) and Fe 2 O 3 (n-type) enhances charge transfer and increases gas adsorption capacity, highlighting its potential as a gas sensor. This composite material exhibits good sensitivity and reliability in monitoring hazardous gases like styrene, underscoring the significant value of this study in environmental monitoring and safety control.
