Fluorinated metal–organic framework materials (NbOFFIVE-1-Ni, also referred to as KAUST-7) have attracted widespread attention because of their high chemical stability and thermal stability, outstanding tolerance with water and H2S, and high CO2-adsorption selectivity over H2 and CH4. KAUST-7 was expected to be a new membrane material candidate for H2/CO2 separation because of the hindered permeation of CO2 resulting from the interaction between CO2 and (NbOF5)2– of the KAUST-7 framework. A highly H2 perm-selective KAUST-7 membrane was first achieved using a novel strategy of inorganic pillar center-facilitated counterdiffusion (IPCFCD) proposed by us. The IPCFCD method not only effectively avoided the corrosion of hydrofluoric acid to α-Al2O3 tubes in the process of preparing KAUST-7 membranes, but also better reduced grain boundary defects because of the faster nucleation rate and resultant high crystallinity. The KAUST-7 membrane exhibited a high H2/CO2 separation factor (SF) of 27.30 for the 1:1 H2/CO2 binary gas mixture with a high H2 permeance of 5.30 × 10–7 mol m–2 s–1 Pa–1 under ambient conditions and a slight decrease of the H2/CO2 SF with increasing operation temperature and presence of steam. This study highlighted the importance of pre-synthesizing inorganic pillar centers (NiNbOF5 intermediate) and the innovation of a membrane formation process for synthesizing polycrystalline KAUST-7 membranes. Most important of all, our study provided a novel approach to overcome the challenge in fabricating metal–organic framework membranes containing corrosive reactants for the corresponding supports.

Photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) production utilizing metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as catalysts is one of the most promising methods for production of H 2 . However, pure MOFs have poor mechanical and chemical stability. Preparing MOF-derived materials with MOFs as templates is an effective method to improve their stability. MOFs were used as precursors to synthesise MoS 2 /CN by a solvothermal method. The results show that under visible-light irradiation, the material exhibits significant photocatalytic H 2 production activity. Modification of CN by MOF-derived MoS 2 increases the light absorption capacity and further improves photogenerated charge separation. The optimal production rate for H 2 evolution was 1695.76 μmol g −1 (4 h). MoS 2 and CN are uniformly dispersed and firmly connected in the catalyst, which is conducive to charge transfer. In addition, the MoS 2 /CN catalyst exhibited better stability for H 2 production. This study provides a reference for the preparation of noble-metal-free sulfide cocatalysts using metal MOFs as self-sacrificing templates.

With the emergence of hydrogen economy worldwide and the increase of safety problems caused by the highly flammable and explosive characteristics of hydrogen (H 2 ), it is urgent to develop the portable sensors that can sensitively and quickly detect H 2 leaks. In this work, the H 2 sensing characteristics of Pd/SnS 2 /SnO 2 nanocomposites synthesized via hydrothermal route as well as impregnation route were systematically investigated for the first time. The influence of different SnS 2 and Pd loading on the H 2 sensing performances of SnO 2 nanoparticles was revealed by varying the addition levels of thiourea and palladium chloride. The H 2 sensing experimental results demonstrated that SnS 2 and Pd modification can greatly enhance the sensing capabilities of SnO 2 , where 1.0 at% Pd/SnS 2 /SnO 2 sensor exhibited high response (95) and rapid response/recovery time (1/9 s) to 500 ppm H 2 at 300 ℃, thus outperforming the current reported sensing performances of SnO 2 -based H 2 sensors. The superior sensing characteristics of Pd/SnS 2 /SnO 2 were attributed to the simultaneous synergistic effect of the three components. This study will supply a rational strategy for designing high sensitive and rapid response H 2 sensors.

In this work, copper/reduced graphene oxide (Cu/RGO) mixed powders were produced by using hydrogen-reduction (H 2 reduction) with graphene oxide (GO) and copper oxide powders as raw materials. The Cu/RGO composite was sintered through spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effects of RGO content and sintering conditions on the relative density, hardness and electrical conductivity of the composite were investigated. The results show that the GO and copper oxide powder can be reduced via H 2 reduction when sintered at 500 °C for 8 h. Moreover, as the content of RGO increases from 0 wt% to 0.67 wt%, the hardness and electrical conductivity increases firstly and then decrease. When the content of RGO is 0.33 wt%, the hardness and electrical conductivity of the composite reach the maximum, i.e., 98.6 HV and 80.5% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard) respectively. The hardness and electrical conductivity are maximum for the composite sintered at 600 °C for 8 h. Further increase in sintering temperature lowers the properties of the composite. The Cu/RGO composites sintered at 600 °C achieved a relative density of 95.56%, with the high hardness of 193.9 HV and electrical conductivity of 89.8% IACS.

Due to high defect tolerance and multiphase allowance, AgInS 2 (AIS) quantum dots (QDs) provide chances for designing new type junctions via tailoring defects, size, or phase structure. These new type junctions potentially enhance photoelectric performance, such as photocatalytic H2 evolution (PHE). Here, ultra-small AIS QDs (∼1 nm) with well-defined exciton absorption were prepared aqueously via a reverse hot-injection procedure for the first time. A coalescence or fast aggregation-based growth was observed for coarsening at 95 or 135 ℃, respectively. XRD and TEM investigations revealed that the tetragonal-orthorhombic ( t -o) phase transition occurred via aggregation-based growth. The studies on phase transition kinetics resulted in fine-tailoring on AIS polymorphs, favoring t -o AIS junctions. UV–vis absorption spectra confirm the double absorption edge of the t -o heterophase junction with enhanced visible absorption. Steady and transient PL spectra suggest improvements in carriers’ separation/transfer in this t -o junction. As a result, the optimized t -o AIS shows superior photocatalytic H 2 evolution rates of 1022 μmol. g −1 . h −1 , 51.1 times that of t -AIS or 3.8 times that of o-AIS. This work is expected to provide new insight for designing ternary alloyed QDs with strongly coupled interfaces for effective H 2 generations.

Owing to their intrinsic and pronounced charge carrier transport when facing the formidable challenge of inhibiting severe surface charge recombination, one-dimensional (1D) CdS nanostructures are promising for advancing high-yield hydrogen production . We herein demonstrate an efficient strategy of boosting interfacial carrier separation by heterostructuring 1D CdS with defective WS 2 . This process yields solid covalent interfaces for high flux carrier transfer that differ distinctively from those reported structures with physical contacts. As a nonnoble cocatalyst, WS 2 can accept photogenerated electrons from CdS, and the sulfur vacancies existing at its edges can effectively trap electrons as active sites for H 2 evolution. Moreover, due to its strong negative property, the H + from the aqueous solution can gather around WS 2 . WS 2 possesses a lower reaction barrier than CdS, which expedites the kinetic process for the reaction. The optimized sample exhibits a high photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 183.4 µmol/h (10 mg photocatalyst), which is as far as we know among the top in the records for CdS-based photocatalysts. We believe this present work will be inspiring in addressing the interfacial charge carrier transfer by constructing covalent heterointerfaces.

As one of the green, renewable, and clean energy resources, hydrogen is widely developed and utilized throughout the world. Highly efficient membrane separation for hydrogen production is required to give promising gas permeance with enough H 2 selectivity. The membranes are desired to be produced in large-scale, fast and facile methods. Here we report for the first time a kind of freestanding MXene-ZIF-8 dual-layered membrane for hydrogen separation. Fast synthesis of such membranes is realized by combining electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and fast current-driven synthesis (FCDS), achieving the assemble of MXene layer and growth of ZIF-8 layer, respectively, overcoming the traditional time-consuming vacuum filtration methods and solvothermal synthesis . The MXene-ZIF-8 dual-layered membrane prepared within 20 min exhibits significantly improved gas separation performance, whose H 2 /CO 2 selectivity increases from 44 for the pristine MXene membrane to 77 with H 2 permeance of 5.97 × 10 −8 mol m −2 s −1 Pa −1 . This concept of structure design of membrane can also be extended to other dual-layered membranes, including various 2D nanosheet layers combined with different MOF layers.

A porous Cu2O/TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst with n-type Cu2O decorated on the mesoporous TiO2 derived from MIL-125 was designed through the in situ Cu2+ ion reduction strategy. Under UV-vis light irradiation, the Cu2O/TiO2 composite with 4.2 wt% of Cu2O displayed the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 14.39 mmol h−1 g−1, which was about 9.6 and 24.8 times that of the original mesoporous TiO2 and pure Cu2O, respectively. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity can be mainly attributed to the type-I band structure formed, which can efficiently enhance the photoexcited charge carrier mobility across the phase interfaces of the Cu2O/TiO2 composite, as evidenced by the UV-DRS spectra, Mott–Schottky curves, and XPS analysis. Besides, the narrow band gap of Cu2O, conducive to the absorption of visible light, and the high specific surface of TiO2 were also found to contribute to the photoactivity enhancement. This work will provide a new perspective for the study of type-I photocatalysts.

Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP) chemistry has been widely explored in the field of catalytic hydrogenation. However, FLPs, which are usually used as homogeneous catalysts, quickly lose their catalytic reactivity in the process of recycling due to their solubility and instability. Herein, we provide a solution to this issue by anchoring triaryl phosphorus used as the Lewis base of FLPs in two kinds of bromine functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Then, tris(pentafluorophenyl)boron (BCF) was introduced as the Lewis acid of FLPs, resulting in COF supported heterogeneous FLP catalysts, called COFs-FLPs which are the first COFs anchored with FLPs. These heterogeneous COFs-FLP catalysts show excellent catalytic reactivity for the hydrogenation of alkynes to olefins. More importantly, these COFs-FLPs can be easily re-cycled at least 10 times without losing their catalytic reactivity.

Herein, we reported the systematic investigation of synergistic photo-thermal-catalysis for NaBH 4 hydrolysis reaction based on zinc orthogermanate. A series of Zn 2 GeO 4 : x Fe 3+ ( x = 0 to 0.10) catalysts were prepared via solvothermal method. The H 2 evolution experiments demonstrated that the photogenerated holes trap OH − not only shifted the equilibrium of NaBH 4 hydrolysis reaction toward the direction of H 2 evolution, but also inhibited the recombination of photogenerated carriers. With the remarkable photo-thermal synergism for the as-prepared catalysts, the H 2 evolution rate in photo-thermal-driven condition had witnessed several times higher than that in mono-energy driven condition. The catalysts remained stable after circulation tests.

Hollow SPP-MS-CN nanotubes have been developed through a green one-step approach by sodium polyphosphate (SPP) in-situ mediated molten salt (MS) thermal condensation of melamine for the first time. In which, the structure of SPP-MS-CN with triazine and heptazine units can been directionally modulated by the SPP content. The molten salts at high-temperature function as green solvents to facilitate mass transfer, which tends to form triazine based CN. Addition of SPP mediates the fluidity of molten salt system, which in-situ modulates the thermal condensation process, boosting the formation of the extended π-conjugated system of heptazine based CN. The 0.5 wt% SPP-MS-CN exhibit photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate up to 1785 µmol h −1 g −1 , which is 2.16 times higher than that of molten salt synthesis of carbon nitride (MS-CN), even 14.5 times enhancement of photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate over pure CN obtained by directly thermal condensation of melamine. It reveals that the hollow structures endow SPP-MS-CN with increased specific surface area, and the formed heptazine structure of SPP-MS-CN benefit for charge carrier separation and transfer and H 2 reduction ability, which favors for the remarkable photocatalytic activity. Our work opens a new window for in-situ modulation of the structure of CN photocatalysts.

A twinned Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S ( T -MCS) homojunction, consisting of wurtzite and zinc-blende Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S with different energy band structures, was fabricated using a facile hydrothermal method, resulting in the formation of a type-II bulk phase twinned homojunction. Furthermore, NiCo 2 S 4 nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of T -MCS to form a surface heterojunction. The activities of T -MCS and NiCo 2 S 4 / T -MCS were tested in the photocatalytic H 2 evolution reaction. T -MCS exhibits a superior H 2 evolution rate of 61.4 mmol∙g −1 ∙h −1 under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation owing to faster bulk phase charge separation, which is 8.2 and 1.9 times higher than those of wurtzite and zinc-blende Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S, respectively. Moreover, NiCo 2 S 4 can facilitate interfacial electron transfer and can lower the H 2 evolution overpotential; the H 2 evolution rate is boosted to 127.3 mmol∙ g −1 ∙h −1 with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 23.4% with irradiation of 2 wt%-NiCo 2 S 4 / T -MCS under 400 ± 7.5 nm light. This work demonstrates that bulk phase twinned homojunctions and a surface heterojunction can combine to promote bulk and interfacial charge transfer and separation, simultaneously improving the kinetics of photocatalytic H 2 evolution.
