In recent years, owing to the unique properties such as high surface area and flexibility, graphene oxide (GO) has been extensively studied in the field of membrane preparation for wastewater treatment. However, GO-based membrane usually has a low water flux because of the narrow layer spacing between adjacent GO sheets. In this study, dopamine-modified halloysite nanotubes (D-HNTs) were used to increase the layer spacing of GO sheets, and then a series of novel D-HNTs/GO composite membranes were fabricated by vacuum filtration. The incorporation of D-HNTs could not only enhance the water flux of GO membrane significantly (from 9.6 to 218 L·m–2·h–1) but also improve the surface morphology and structure, which presented an underwater superoleophobic property. In addition, the wettability of membrane was further increased with the introduction of ethylenediamine in D-HNTs/GO membrane. More importantly, novel membranes were successfully applied for the simultaneous removal of oils and dyes from wastewater, which exhibited high water flux, good rejection ratio, and even superior anti-oil-fouling property. In summary, the novel GO-based composite membranes could have a bright application prospect for wastewater treatment.

High water flux and dye rejection are crucial for effective textile wastewater treatment. In this study, novel two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized and combined with one-dimensional (1D) halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and polydopamine (PDA) to fabricate the thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and separation performance of resultant membranes were systematically characterized to illustrate their structure-property-performance relationships. Introducing hydrophilic 1D HNTs enhanced membrane hydrophilicity and bridged large gaps between the 2D MOF nanosheets. Under optimized conditions, the PDA-HNTs/MOFs membrane achieved a water permeance of 362.1 LMH·bar⁻¹ and 99.9 % rejection of Congo Red. PDA acted as a “bridge” linking HNTs and MOFs to the membrane substrate, thereby providing excellent antifouling performance and long-term stability. After 72 h of continuous operation, this membrane maintained a 99.1 % rejection of Congo Red, greatly surpassing both pure MOFs and HNTs/MOFs membranes. These findings highlight the superior filtration capabilities and promising potential of PDA-HNTs/MOFs membranes for dye wastewater treatment.

An innovative and simple nanocomposite denoted as MHNTs@PEI was synthesized for gallic acid (GA) analytical sample pretreatment. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized was binded onto magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) to inhence adsorption capacity. MHNTs@PEI was obtained only through two steps modification (amination and PEI modification). Characterizations showed that there are layers of synthetic PEI on the tubular structure of the material and magnetic spheres on its surface, both indicating successful synthesis of the nanocomposite. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherms and kinetic modeling showed that the Langmuir model and pseudo-first-order model fit the adsorption data, respectively. MHNTs@PEI achieved an adsorption capacity of 158 mg·g −1 . Overall, the abundant adsorption sites significantly improved the adsorption performance of the MHNTs@PEI. Regeneration tests demonstrated that the MHNTs@PEI exhibits effective adsorption, even after undergoing five consecutive cycles. Optimization of key parameters (ratio, volume of elution, elution time and frequency) in the process of adsorption and desorption was also conducted. The limit of detection (LOD) and that of the quantification (LOQ) were 0.19 and 0.63 μg·mL −1 , respectively, and the recoveries were 95.67–99.43 %. Finally, the excellent magnetism (43.5 emu·g −1 ) and the adsorption feature of MHNTs@PEI enabled its successful utilization in analytical sample pretreatment through the extraction of GA from green tea.

Efficient and low-cost nanocatalysts are extremely desirable for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). A smaller nanocatalyst particle size and stronger support effect can significantly enhance the catalytic performance. Naturally occurring halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are promising alternative supports for fine metal nanoparticles, but the smooth surface and single type of functional groups on HNTs are usually unfavorable for the anchoring of metal ions. Herein, we modified HNTs using a mild and controllable molten salt etching method to create a rough surface (rHNTs), followed by loading Pt–Ni alloys to prepare Pt–Ni/rHNTs for the catalytic reduction of 4-NP. The results demonstrate that ultrafine Pt–Ni alloy nanoparticles with a diameter of 1.60 nm are uniformly dispersed on the rough surface of rHNTs. The particle size and catalytic performance can be tuned by adjusting the loading amount of Pt–Ni. The optimized Pt–Ni/rHNT (1 wt %) nanocatalyst reveals the smallest Pt–Ni particle size and the highest catalytic rate of 0.1953 min−1, which exceeds many Pt–Ni-based catalysts in previous reports. This work offers an ingenious idea for the mild surface modification of HNTs and a brilliant perspective for the rational design of inexpensive 4-NP reduction nanocatalysts.

The research on intelligent corrosion inhibition and repair protective coatings is currently underway, with a particular focus on the intricate microstructure failure process of these coatings due to the inherent complexity of their fillers (functionality, interfacial compatibility, etc.). Herein, we developed corrosion inhibition nanocontainers with enhanced photothermal and pH-responsive properties. The incorporation of chitosan facilitated the acidic environment responsiveness of the nanocontainers, while MoS 2 nanocontainers enabled light-triggered release. The electrochemical results show that after 60 days, the impedance modulus of epoxy coating with 1 % nanocontainers is 4.35 × 10 8 Ω·cm 2 , while that of pure epoxy coating is 2.09 × 10 6 Ω·cm 2 . And it can achieve 300 h of salt spray resistance. In addition, the mechanical properties show that the adhesion and tensile properties of the coating are improved, and the saturated water absorption of the coating is decreased. In addition, the evolution of its electrochemical structure was comprehensively studied using relaxation time analysis. The research results indicate that the coating exhibits multiple electrochemical processes, and the controlled release and formation of a protective layer effectively hinder the formation of corrosion products and reduce internal electrochemical reactions. This study provides a potential method for studying the structural evolution of composite coatings.

Protein films offer a promising alternative to traditional synthetic polymer materials because of their nontoxicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability, particularly in the biomedical field. However, their practical use has remained a challenge due to their low mechanical strength, poor aqueous stability and high production costs. In this work, we prepared an organic-inorganic protein-based composite film by incorporating vancomycin-loaded halloysite nanotubes (Hal) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) with a facile and biocompatible method. In the composite film, the abundant α-helix structure in BSA was reduced and transformed into a β-sheet-rich phase-transition BSA (PTB), which then interacted with vancomycin-loaded Hal (VHal) through hydrogen bonding to form a cross-linked network structure. Hal can not only reinforce the protein self-assembly via noncovalent interactions to improve the mechanical strength and stability of the protein film, but also act as carriers of antibacterial agents for a sustained drug release system. As a result, the resultant VHal/PTB composite film could completely eliminate Staphylococcus aureus within 30 min and demonstrated excellent biocompatibility. In vivo studies further showed that the composite film could effectively inhibit bacterial infections and accelerate the healing of infected skin wounds in mouse skin, with near-complete wound closure achieved within 12 days. The design strategy of this robust, breathable and biocompatible nanocomposite protein film with antibacterial properties sheds new light on the development of multifunctional wound dressings for infected wound tissue.

Melamine formaldehyde (MF) resin is a widely used decorated material, but its inherent brittleness limits broader applications. In this study, a novel bio-based nanomaterial (AQ@HNTs) was fabricated via a layer-by-layer self-assembly of quaternized chitosan and sodium alginate onto halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), providing a green and efficient strategy for natural nanotube surface modification. The resulting AQ@HNTs were incorporated into MF resin to synergistically enhance its toughness and antibacterial properties without affecting its curing behavior at 120 °C. Comprehensive characterization of AQ@HNTs was performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Zeta potential analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanical and antibacterial performance of the resulting MF-AQH resin-impregnated paper was evaluated for mechanical properties, antibacterial performance, and crack resistance through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), mechanical testing, antibacterial assays, and crack resistance tests. The paper impregnated with 5 wt% AQ@HNTs exhibited significantly improved mechanical properties, with tensile strength, elongation at break, and elastic modulus increasing by 78.11 %, 39.66 %, and 27.61 %, respectively. Additionally, it demonstrated strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , with inhibition zones of 21.97 ± 0.57 mm and 32.19 ± 0.37 mm, and bacterial survival rates reduced to 17.99 % and 11.52 %, respectively. This work highlights a dual-functional approach combining structural reinforcement and antimicrobial activity through an innovative bio-based modification strategy, offering a promising solution for high-performance MF resin in interior decoration applications.

To address the inherent flammability and severe smoke release of polypropylene (PP) that restrict its safety-critical applications, a novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system was developed in this study. Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was efficiently coated with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) using 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) as a molecular bridge to obtain a composite flame retardant (HNTs@APP) with enhanced thermal stability and charring performance. This component was synergistically combined with tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC) and zinc borate (ZB) to construct an efficient IFR system. Remarkably, the experimental results show that the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of composite PP2, which is composed of only 25 wt% HNTs@APP/THEIC, reaches 32.5%; with the introduction of ZB, the flame retardant performance of the composite is further improved. The silicon-boron synergistic effect can efficiently catalyze the dehydration and crosslinking of the polymer matrix, significantly enhance the thermal stability and compactness of the residual carbon layer, thereby synergistically improving the flame retardant, smoke suppression and mechanical properties of the composite. Among them, the LOI of PP4 is increased to 34.5%, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total smoke production (TSP) are reduced to 162 kW/m 2 and 0.6 m 2 , decreasing by 88% and 95% compared with pure PP, respectively, and the lowest I D /I G (0.58) is achieved. Meanwhile, its tensile strength and elongation at break are increased to 24.81 MPa and 44.87%, respectively, effectively alleviating the deterioration of the mechanical properties of the PP matrix caused by the addition of flame retardants. This study realizes the synergistic improvement of flame retardant and smoke suppression properties of PP materials at a low flame retardant addition amount, providing a new technical path with good application prospects for the application of PP in safety-critical fields such as electronic and electrical enclosures and building fireproof materials.

Fe 2 O 3 /HNTs composites were prepared by a facile and economical sol-gel method. • Photocatalytic activity of Fe 2 O 3 was greatly enhanced by loading on HNTs surface. • Synergy effect of photocatalysis and PDS activation enhanced TC degradation. • 50 mg FH-40 removed 94.80% of TC molecules within 120 min in Vis/PDS system. • The potential synergistic enhancement mechanism was well proposed. Through loading Fe 2 O 3 on the surface of halloysite nanotube (HNTs), Fe 2 O 3 /HNTs composites (FH-X, X = 10, 30, 40, 50, 70, representing the mass of Fe 2 O 3 in the composite as 10 wt%, 30 wt%, 40 wt%, 50 wt% and 70 wt%), were successfully fabricated via sol-gel method. The effects of Fe 2 O 3 content on the morphology, microstructure, photoelectric and photocatalytic performance of the FH-X composites were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the agglomeration of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles was effectively alleviated, which were uniformly distributed on the surface of HNTs and decreased to around 5–15 nm in size. Consequently, FH-X composites exhibited superior adsorption and photocatalytic performance toward tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). With the increase of Fe 2 O 3 content, the degradation of TC by the FH-X composites firstly increased and then decreased. Among them, FH-40 exhibited the optimal photocatalytic performance, which was likely due to the interfacial effect between Fe 2 O 3 and HNTs. The sodium peroxydisulfate (PDS) was used as the auxiliary agent, 0.05 g of FH-40 removed 94.80% of TC (100 mL, 40 mg/L) under visible light irradiation for 120 min in the Vis/PDS system. The reaction rate constant was 4.18 times that of Vis/FH-4. The effects of the PDS and photocatalyst dosage, pH value and initial concentration of TC on the removal rate of TC were also investigated. Additionally, FH-40 exhibited favorable stability, and excellent universality for degrading other organic pollutants. ·SO 4 ⁻ , h ⁺ and ·O 2 ⁻ were the dominant active species during the photocatalysis. The possible degradation pathway and mechanism of TC were proposed. Download: Download high-res image (187KB) Download: Download full-size image Mechanism of TC degradation by FH-40 in Vis/PDS system

The commercialization of cesium lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) is hindered by lead toxicity and poor stability. We propose a synergistic “chemical-physical” dual-confinement strategy. Chemically, Sn 2 + and Cu 2+ are co-doped into CsPbBr 3 , forming low-lead CsSn 0.7 Cu 0.1 Pb 0.2 Br 3 QDs, where Sn 2+ tunes the bandgap and Cu 2+ passivates Sn-related defects. Physically, QDs are in-situ grown within halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), a natural clay, serving as a nanoreactor and barrier. Silane modification enhances hydrophobicity. The composite exhibits high photoluminescence quantum yield (73.46%), excellent thermal reversibility, and remarkable water resistance (86% intensity retention after 12 h). Applications include a wide-color-gamut white light-emitting diode (122.1% of National Television System Committee (NTSC)) and an efficient visible-light photocatalyst for methylene blue degradation. This work provides a sustainable pathway for stable, low-toxicity perovskite materials in optoelectronics and environmental remediation.

The rapid development of efficient hydrogen storage systems has significantly advanced large-scale hydrogen energy applications in fuel cells. In this study, we report a novel hydrogen storage strategy involving the loading of ammonia borane (AB) and ruthenium nanoparticle catalysts into a halloysite nanotube (HNT) inorganic sponge (Ru/HP) for low-temperature thermal dehydrogenation of AB to release high-purity hydrogen. Attributing to the synergistic effects of the nanoconfinement of HNT-based porous sponge and the catalysis of ruthenium nanoparticles, the thermal dehydrogenation performance of AB@Ru/HP is significantly improved with boosted reaction kinetics and lowered dehydrogenation temperature (60 °C). Beyond that, AB@Ru/HP also avoids volume expansion and the emission of byproducts such as ammonia, diborane, and borazine during pyrolysis. The activation energy of AB@Ru/HP (50.13 kJ mol–1) is substantially lower than that of pure AB (160 kJ mol–1) and AB@HP (110.55 kJ mol–1). Important of all, the Ru/HP sponge demonstrates an encapsulation ratio for AB (23%), as well as excellent recyclability and reusability. This work presents a viable strategy for developing efficient and cost-effective hydrogen storage systems through the thermal dehydrogenation of AB confined within a catalyst-loaded inorganic HNT sponge.

The development of cost-effective catalysts for green diesel production from fatty acids is crucial to sustainable energy, yet achieving high efficiency under mild, low-H 2 pressure conditions remains challenging. Natural halloysite nanotubes (HNT), owing to their abundance, low cost, and high metal-loading capability, represent an attractive catalyst support. Herein, RuPt alloy nanoparticles supported on halloysite nanotubes are used for the efficient decarboxylation of stearic acid (SA). Under mild conditions using the in situ H 2 , the optimized Ru 0.7 Pt 1.0 /HNT catalyst exhibits high performance, achieving 87.40% SA conversion, with a C8-C19 alkane selectivity of 90.42%. Meanwhile, the catalyst maintains high catalytic activity over at least three consecutive reaction cycles. Combined experimental results and DFT calculations reveal that the RuPt bimetallic catalyst exhibits a significantly lower activation energy barrier than its monometallic counterparts. This reduction is attributed to electron transfer from Pt to Ru, which lowers the activation energy barrier and accounts for the superior performance. This work establishes a scalable low-noble-metal-loading catalyst design, offering an energy-efficient and sustainable route for green diesel production from waste cooking oils.
