Thiourea-assistant growth of In2O3 porous pompon assembled from 2D nanosheets for enhanced ethanol sensing performance

Jingju Liu,Xiaoyan Lin,Mimi Sun,Bing Du,Lei Li,Jing Bai,Ming Zhou

The flower-like porous In 2 O 3 pompon assembled from two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets was synthesized through a simple thiourea-assistant hydrothermal method following the annealed process. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images manifest that the In 2 O 3 pompon possesses a clear porous structure with a nanosheet thickness of about 37.5 nm. Further, we compare the performance of intermediate products (In 2 S 3 , In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 ) and In 2 O 3 nanostructures as ethanol detection gas sensors. The fabrication of In 2 O 3 -based sensors exhibits enhanced ethanol sensing performance than that of In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 -based and In 2 S 3 -based sensors, which is mainly attributed to more chemical oxygen and oxygen vacancies on the material surface. The In 2 O 3 -based sensors for ethanol detection revealed a wide linear range from 2 ppm to 100 ppm, meanwhile the corresponding detection limits (LOD) as low as ~0.4 ppm at 260 °C. And the In 2 O 3 -based sensors also exhibit superior repeatability and reliable selectivity. The simple fabrication strategy of 2D nanosheets-assembled flower-like In 2 O 3 porous pompon may facilitate other ethanol gas sensors production and other 2D metal oxide semiconductor materials-based sensors preparation.

High-performance formaldehyde sensing realized by alkaline-earth metals doped In2O3 nanotubes with optimized surface properties

Qihua Liang,Xiaoxin Zou,Hui Chen,Meihong Fan,Guo-Dong Li

Although many formaldehyde sensing materials have been developed, it is still a great challenge to get sensing materials with good selectivity. To achieve better sensing selectivity, tuning the chemical state and the amount of oxygen absorbed on the surface of semiconductor metal oxides are effective strategies. In this work, alkaline-earth elements doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes are prepared by an electrospinning method. According to the XPS results, work function of the material and the chemical adsorption analysis, it can be concluded that the Fermi level, the basicity of the material, the activity and the amount of oxygen chemisorbed on In 2 O 3 can be tuned by the additional alkaline-earth elements and enhance the sensing selectivity. The sensor based on 5% Ca-In 2 O 3 shows the highest response of 116 to 100 ppm formaldehyde which is about 4.5 and 10 times higher than those of ethanol and acetone at 100 ppm and becomes the most selective among those products.

Liu Lili,Li Shouchun,Guo Xin,Wang Lianyuan,Liu Li,Wang Xuesong

It has been reported a lot that nanowire and nanotube semiconductor oxide type sensor possess excellent sensing property. Many works ascribed excellent sensing properties to the big specific surface area. Herein, In 2 O 3 nanofiber and nanotube were synthesized by single nozzle electrospinning and followed by calcination with different heating rate. And the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. Their gas sensing properties were studied to investigate the advantages of their morphologies, and the response and recovery dynamic curves were also tested to investigate their gas sensitive characteristics. The results show that acetone sensing sensitivity based on nanotubes is better than that of nanowires.

Wang Han,Li Haiying,Li Shouchun,Liu Li,Wang Lianyuan,Guo Xuexin

Biomorphic In 2 O 3 –ZnO hollow microtubules were synthesized by using cotton as template and followed by calcination. This environmental-friendly method using biomaterials as templates can be used to synthesize metal oxide semiconductor materials with specific morphologies. The structural and microscopy characterization were carried out with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The SEM images display the porous structure of the as-obtained hollow microtubules, which is beneficial to increase gas sensing properties of materials. Gas sensors based on In 2 O 3 -doped ZnO hollow microtubules were investigated and the test results demonstrate the excellent acetone sensing properties of such porous materials. The response of In 2 O 3 –ZnO hollow microtubule sensors to 100 ppm acetone at the optimum temperature of 300 °C is 62.5, meanwhile the response and recovery times are 3 and 7 s, respectively. Moreover, even at 0.1 ppm of acetone detectable response can be observed, and the value is 2.82. At the same time the sensors have selectivity to acetone.

Hao Zhang,Dongzhi Zhang,Yan Yang,Lina Zhou,Yukun Liu,Wenzhe Liu,Yuehang Sun,Yihong Guo,Yuncheng Ji

As atmospheric issues and energy crises worsen, developing environmentally friendly, low-cost, high-performance self-powered gas sensing systems for gas pollutant monitoring is crucial for the development of ecological civilization. In this work, an eco-friendly self-powered nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sensor (EFNS) system based on an eco-friendly triboelectric nanogenerator (EF-TENG) is reported. The system comprises a power supply unit (EF-TENG) and a sensing unit (In 2 O 3 /PPy sensor), connected through a signal stabilization circuit. EF-TENG utilizes eco-friendly and biodegradable gelatin and PLA/PBAT as the friction layer. By introducing leaf structures on the gelatin surface using a template method , the output voltage and current of EF-TENG were increased by 1.44 and 1.67 times, respectively. The peak power density and root mean square power density of EF-TENG reached 1386 mW m −2 and 185.35 mW m −2 , respectively. Additionally, EF-TENG exhibited excellent long-term stability, maintaining a stable output voltage (∼24 V) after rectification and voltage stabilization treatment under conditions of 15–55°C and 40–80 % RH . Additionally, an In 2 O 3 /PPy heterostructure sensor was prepared, and the EFNS system was constructed through impedance matching effects, revealing the NO 2 response mechanism of the In 2 O 3 /PPy heterostructure . This achieved a wide detection range and highly sensitive (V g /V a = 355 %@30 ppm) detection of NO 2 . This work provides insights into eco-friendly self-powered gas sensors and sensing mechanisms, offering ideas for the development of environmental monitoring sensors and clean energy harvesting devices.

Hollow mesoporous In2O3 derived from MIL-68 (In) for dual gas sensing of NO2 and H2

Jianwang He,Hu Meng,Yan Xu,Liang Feng

NO 2 is one of the most important air pollutant gases for the environment and human health. H 2 is seen as the next generation of clean energy to promote sustainable development. However, sensitive detection of NO 2 at room temperature is still a major challenge, and reliable H 2 sensors are also scarce. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors are advantageous for detecting gas. Hence, we synthesized the unique hexahedral hollow mesoporous In 2 O 3 (h-In 2 O 3 ) derived from MIL-68 (In). The formation process and properties of h-In 2 O 3 were analyzed. The surface of h-In 2 O 3 is rich in hydroxyl groups , which are active sites for NO 2 adsorption at room temperature. Increasing working temperature up to 160 °C enables effective sensing reaction with H 2 . Based on different temperature-dependent gas sensing mechanisms, the h-In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits ultrasensitive response values of 400 towards 100 ppb NO 2 at room temperature (24 °C) and of 17.99 towards 10 ppm H 2 at 160 °C. In addition, the h-In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits reliable linear response, low theoretical detection limit of 1.8 ppt and 23 ppb for NO 2 and H 2 , excellent selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability. The synergistic effect of the unique structure, larger specific surface area , and abundant adsorbed oxygen plus oxygen vacancy contribute to the excellent gas sensing performance of the h-In 2 O 3 sensor. This study provides a promising strategy for the development of bifunctional gas sensors.

Experimental and theoretical study of Pd-Pt/In2O3 bimetallic catalysts for enhancing methanol production from CO2

Junxin Guo,Zhenyu Wang,Tongtong Gao,Zhao Wang

Binary Pd/In 2 O 3 and Pt/In 2 O 3 catalysts exhibit technological potential in CO 2 methanol synthesis. However, the key to achieving high productivity lies in resolving the unfavorable Pd-In alloy and Pt nanoparticles formation during the reaction. In this study, we present the surface restructuring of Pd-Pt/In 2 O 3 catalysts under CO 2 hydrogenation conditions. Detailed quasi-operando characterization and theory calculation reveal stable reconstruction driven by Pt with Pd. The bimetallic Pd-Pt inhibits the formation of both Pd-In alloy and Pt nanoparticles. Moreover, this restructuring process generates more oxygen vacancies during the reaction. These oxygen vacancies promote electron transfer from the indium oxide surface to the Pd-Pt clusters. Consequently, a shift occurs from interface-induced CO 2 adsorption to cluster-induced adsorption. Thereby, the STY of methanol on Pd-Pt/In 2 O 3 at 300 °C increased by approximately 20 % compared to that on Pd/In 2 O 3 along. The findings highlight the crucial role of component-induced restructuring and oxygen vacancies in influencing the change of adsorption sites.

In-situ construction of In2O3/In2S3-CdIn2S4 Z-scheme heterojunction nanotubes for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

Yige Qi,Guoxi Zhou,Yunchao Wu,Hou Wang,Zhiyong Yan,Yan Wu

Semiconductor photocatalysis was considered as an ideal solution to energy shortages. Herein, a novel ternary In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 -CdIn 2 S 4 (IOSC) nanotube (NTs) photocatalyst was successfully constructed via in situ growth of In 2 S 3 and CdIn 2 S 4 nanosheets onto In 2 O 3 skeleton. It was used for the efficient and stable photo-production of hydrogen from water splitting. The rationally designed IOSC NTs displayed significantly enhanced photocatalytic H 2 production under visible light irradiation (≥420 nm), with the highest H 2 yield determined to be 2892 μmol·g −1 , which is much higher than that of pristine In 2 S 3 and In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 (IOS) NTs. Cyclic testing has shown that the IOSC2 product remains stable after four cycles of repeated use. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was contributed by its tightly bound tube-nanosheets heterogeneous structure and superior light absorption. Photoelectrons transfer in IOSC2 follows a Z-scheme mechanism, which greatly facilitates its utilization of photogenerated electrons and prevents CdIn 2 S 4 from undergoing photo-corrosion affecting material stability. This work demonstrates the key role of in situ growth in the interface design of ternary heterostructures.

In2O3 and Au nanoparticles co-modified WS2 microsheets for enhanced NO2 gas sensing at room-temperature

Cuixian Luo,Yimeng Dong,Yongjiao Sun,Yurong Huang,Lingrong Xue,Lifang Ren,Daming Wang,Minzhe Qin,Xinke Li

Tungsten disulfide (WS2) is emerging with dazzling visibility as a “layered material beyond graphene and molybdenum disulfide” due to its exquisite tunable electronic, surface structure, high carrier mobility, and physicochemical stability. In this article, In2O3 and Au nanoparticles (NPs) co-modified WS2 microsheets were prepared for detecting NO2 at room temperature (RT). The In2O3 and Au NPs were anchored on the surface of WS2 microsheets, which could be observed by the characterization. The NO2 sensing performance at RT was optimized by adjusting the contents of In2O3 and Au NPs. The proposed gas sensor based on Au1WIn6 (WS2 microsheets co-modified with 6 wt% In2O3 and 1 wt% Au NPs) showed the highest response (46.91 to 50 ppm NO2), limit of detection (LOD; 18.9 ppb), excellent linearity within the test range, and good stability under various relative humidity (RH), bending degrees, and bending times. The excellent result is attributed to the formation of a heterojunction, which increases the number of ionized oxygen adsorption sites and facilitates the reaction between NO2 gas and Au1WIn6. Therefore, it is believed that decorating WS2 microsheets with metal oxide and noble metal NPs is a promising strategy to improve the NO2 sensing property at RT.

Pt-In2O3 mesoporous nanofibers with enhanced gas sensing performance towards ppb-level NO2 at room temperature

Yunshi Liu,Xing Gao,Feng Li,Geyu Lu,Tong Zhang,Nicolae Barsan

Pt-loaded In 2 O 3 mesoporous nanofibers (NFs) have been prepared by electrospinning, followed by a facile reduction method. The sample obtained by adding tea saponin into the spinning solution, sample In-TS, displays a more than 4 times higher specific surface area, value of 86.9 m 2  g −1 , than that of conventionally prepared samples. The loading with small-sized Pt nanoparticles (NPs) determines excellent gas sensing performance towards NO 2 down to ppb level (R g /R a  = 2.8 to 10 ppb and 23.9–1 ppm) at room temperature (RT), by that significantly lowering the power consumption. The reason is that the open pores and channels on the mesoporous NFs generated by the foaming agent not only promote the adsorption and desorption of NO 2 molecules on the sensing layers, but also improves the transduction function of the sensors by ensuring that there are no parts of the fiber that are not accessible to the gases. The introduction of Pt to the mesoporous NFs could accelerate the dissociation of absorbed oxygen and the active surface reactions in NO 2 owing to the catalytic property and chemical sensitization of well-dispersed Pt NPs. Due to the unique gas sensing performance, sample In-TS-Pt has a prospect for applications in low-concentration NO 2 detection at RT.

Cd1-xNixS nanocrystals decorated flower-like Mn doped In2O3 microspheres with enhanced reduction activity of CO2

Yangfan Xu,Tianze Han,Tingting Ji,Wenqian Luan,Ruiyang Zhao,Jishu Han,Lei Wang

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction technology provides a promising approach to solve the energy and environmental problems. In this work, flower-like MnIn 2 S 4 microspheres were prepared by solvothermal method , and then calcined in air to obtain flower-like Mn doped In 2 O 3 (Mn:In 2 O 3 ) microspheres . Subsequently, Ni doped CdS (Cd 1-x Ni x S) nanocrystals were prepared and compounded with Mn doped In 2 O 3 to obtain Cd 1-x Ni x S/Mn:In 2 O 3 composite photocatalysts . It was found that Cd 0 · 96 Ni 0 · 04  S/Mn:In 2 O 3 had the best photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity. The CO yield reached to 43.40 μmol g −1 in 3 h. The improved CO 2 reduction property were attributed to not only the increased light absorption capacity and the expanded surface area but also the enhanced charge separation efficiency that caused by the construction of Z-scheme heterostructure . The design and preparation of high-efficiency photocatalyst would be an effective way to promote the development of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Construction of highly efficient In2O3/SnO2 sensor for real-time NO2 monitoring at near room temperature

Ji Li,Ming Yang,Jiangbin Guo,Xianfa Zhang,Yingming Xu,Xiaoli Cheng,Lihua Huo

NO 2 is a dangerous gaseous pollutant, which is also a precursor to the formation of photochemical smog and ozone. It has negative impacts on the environment and human beings at local, regional and even the whole global scale. In this context, it is imperative to develop the efficient sensing materials for detecting NO 2 gas. In this study, a near room temperature NO 2 sensing material (In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterostructure) with “4S” index (selectivity, sensitivity, speed, stability) was constructed, it overcomes the drawbacks of traditional detection techniques and solves the unavoidable problems of metal oxide semiconductors in the sensing process (high temperature, cross response, weak response at low concentration, etc.). Meanwhile, the synergy between the surface structure and heterostructure interface of In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 has been thoroughly analyzed. More importantly, this study also sampled and monitored ambient air samples from different geographical locations and different time points in cities, which provides strong support for promoting the application of MOS sensors in real environment.
