The simultaneous introduction of shallow acceptors and elimination of donor compensation is the key issue toward achieving p-type ZnO. Herein, through accurate control of the Li dopant configuration and systematic spectroscopy characterization, we obtain direct evidence that Li doping creates isolated VZn in ZnO with a luminescence peak around 414 nm (∼3.0 eV), and at the same time, removes donors. Interestingly, the same defect emission is also created by simple H2O2 treatment and appeared in a ZnO single crystal with abundant metal vacancies, unambiguously demonstrating its shallow acceptor characteristic.

Two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 was synthesized by the exfoliation of Ti 3 AlC 2 with HF solution and subsequently intercalation with dimethyl sulfoxide . As anode for lithium ion batteries , Ti 3 C 2 after intercalation had an obvious higher capacity than that before intercalation. The capacity can be 123.6 mAh g − 1 at 1C rate with a coulombic efficiency of 47%. It is higher than that of 2D Ti 2 C and close to the theoretical capacity of Ti 3 C 2 with F termination. It was suggested that MXene with pure F groups may be a way to further improve its Li storage performance.

Exploiting novel materials with high specific capacities is crucial for the progress of advanced energy storage devices. Intentionally constructing functional heterostructures based on a variety of two-dimensional (2D) substances proves to be an extremely efficient method for capitalizing on the shared benefits of these materials. By elaborately designing the structure, a greatly escalated steadiness can be achieved throughout electrochemical cycles, along with boosted electron transfer kinetics. In this study, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was utilized to alter the surface composition of multilayer Ti3C2TxMXene, contributing to contriving various layered heterostructure materials through a precise adjustment of the reaction temperature. The optimal composite materials at a reaction temperature of 500 °C (defined as MX500), incorporating MXene as the conductive substrate, exhibited outstanding stability and high coulombic efficiency during electrochemical cycling. Meanwhile, the reactive sites are increased by using TiS2and TiO2at the heterogeneous interfaces, which sustains a specific capacity of 449 mAh g−1after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g−1and further demonstrates their exceptional electrochemical characteristics. Additionally, the noted pseudocapacitive properties, like MXene materials, further highlight the diverse capabilities of intuitive material design. This study illuminates the complex details of surface modification in multilayer MXene and offers a crucial understanding of the strategic creation of heterostructures, significantly impacting sophisticated electrochemical applications.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become advanced energy storage technologies; however, specific capacity remains limited by the active materials in cathodes. Here, we report Li–LiNO3 batteries (LNBs) where LiNO3 in electrolyte serves as both active materials and ion conductor at room temperature. LNBs operate on a highly reversible redox between NO3− and NO2−, which results in an impressive areal capacity of 19 mAh cm−2 at a plateau voltage of 1.75 V. Furthermore, the pouch cell exhibits stable cycling at a capacity of 100 mAh. This research underscores the potential of LNBs for high-capacity energy storage.

Li (1+ x ) AlSiO 4 ceramics were synthesized using the conventional solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that they crystallized in single-phase hexagonal structure. Li loss was studied using the thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). Appropriate excess Li resulted in sintering temperature reduction from 1325 ℃ to 1225 ℃. The ultra-low dielectric constant ( ε r ) was influenced by the polarizability per unit volume. Theoretical calculations manifested that enhancing the packing fraction suppressed lattice vibrations, resulting in a significant increase in the quality factor ( Q×f ). Compared with the pure phase samples, adding Li ions optimized the thermal stability of the ceramics. Specifically, Li 1.02 AlSiO 4 demonstrated optimal microwave dielectric properties with ε r = 4.13, Q×f = 45,387 GHz and τ f = -35.54 ppm/°C, making it a spacious application prospect in the field of 6 G communication.

Li- and Mn-rich (LMR) cathode materials that utilize both cation and anion redox can yield substantial increases in battery energy density 1 , 2 , 3 . However, although voltage decay issues cause continuous energy loss and impede commercialization, the prerequisite driving force for this phenomenon remains a mystery 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 Here, with in situ nanoscale sensitive coherent X-ray diffraction imaging techniques, we reveal that nanostrain and lattice displacement accumulate continuously during operation of the cell. Evidence shows that this effect is the driving force for both structure degradation and oxygen loss, which trigger the well-known rapid voltage decay in LMR cathodes. By carrying out micro- to macro-length characterizations that span atomic structure, the primary particle, multiparticle and electrode levels, we demonstrate that the heterogeneous nature of LMR cathodes inevitably causes pernicious phase displacement/strain, which cannot be eliminated by conventional doping or coating methods. We therefore propose mesostructural design as a strategy to mitigate lattice displacement and inhomogeneous electrochemical/structural evolutions, thereby achieving stable voltage and capacity profiles. These findings highlight the significance of lattice strain/displacement in causing voltage decay and will inspire a wave of efforts to unlock the potential of the broad-scale commercialization of LMR cathode materials.

A stable interface and preventing dendrite-growth are two crucial factors to realize long-life all-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs) using sulfide-based solid electrolytes (SEs) and Li metal anodes. But it remains a challenge to accomplish the two factors simultaneously. Here, an effective strategy is reported to realize this goal in Li-argyrodites via self-engineered metastable decomposition that is enabled by Si doping in Cl-rich argyrodites. It is shown that Cl atoms in the lattice become metastable and are highly reactive with Li atoms. The locally deposited/grown Li crystal nuclei are thus depleted by the metastable Cl during electrochemical cycling, in situ generating electrically insulated LiCl shells concentrated at the argyrodite grain boundaries. The shells in turn prevent the autochthonous Li redeposition and act as self-protective layers to restrain the continuous decomposition in the interior argyrodite, that is, self-assembly of reactive-cores-stable-shells to Li metal, thereby enabling an ultra-long life ASSLB using Li metal anodes at room temperature under relatively high current densities.

Electrolyte engineering advances Li metal batteries (LMBs) with high Coulombic efficiency (CE) by constructing LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). However, the low conductivity of LiF disturbs Li + diffusion across SEI, thus inducing Li + transfer-driven dendritic deposition. In this work, we establish a mechanistic model to decipher how the SEI affects Li plating in high-fluorine electrolytes. The presented theory depicts a linear correlation between the capacity loss and current density to identify the slope k (determined by Li + mobility of SEI components) as an indicator for describing the homogeneity of Li + flux across SEI, while the intercept dictates the maximum CE that electrolytes can achieve. This model inspires the design of an efficient electrolyte that generates dual-halide SEI to homogenize Li + distribution and Li deposition. The model-driven protocol offers a promising energetic analysis to evaluate the compatibility of electrolytes to Li anode, thus guiding the design of promising electrolytes for LMBs.

Garnet type solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) possess high stability against Li metal, intrinsic safety, and wide electrochemical window. To achieve the all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) with high gravimetric/volumetric energy density and high power density, flat thin garnet SSEs with a high ionic conductivity of > 10 −4 S/cm are required. However, the current fabrication processes are challengeable to maintain both the high ionic conductivity and the flat skeleton due to the severe Li loss during processing and the fragile nature of thin films . Herein, we introduce a rapid Li compensation (RLC) technique that combines the ultra-fast high-temperature sintering (UHS) technique with the tape casting process to produce highly ionic conductive, flat garnet SSE thin films. The freestanding Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) thin film with a thickness of 40 µm, fabricated using this technique, displays a surface roughness of 5 µm and a relative density of 95%. After a 10-seconds Li compensation, the compensated LLZTO film displays an ionic conductivity of 4.3 × 10 −4 S/cm, 2 times higher than the non-compensated one. As a proof of concept, this RLC technique proposes a new strategy for the fabrication of high-performance ceramic thin films and also lays a solid foundation for the application of ASSBs.

One big obstacle for a redox mediator (RM)-based Li–O 2 system is the redox shuttling between the diffusible RM + and Li anode, leading to the unexpected RM degradation and continuous deterioration of Li anode, which inevitably results in a low energy efficiency and a poor cycling stability for the Li–O 2 battery. Here, InBr 3 as a self-defensed RM is firstly introduced into Li–O 2 batteries, which can lower the cell overpotential and thus improve the cycling performance. Moreover, due to the In 3+ existence, an In-rich composite protective layer can be in situ generated on the Li anode, which contributes to suppressing the redox shuttling, improving the interface stability of Li and electrolyte, and inhibiting the dendrite formation. This work gives an insight into the development of self-defensed RM and the protection of the Li anode for Li–O 2 batteries.

A facile surface modification of LLZO is realized via mild acid-base neutralization with pentafluorobenzoic acid (PFA), which efficiently removes surface Li₂CO₃ without destroying the LLZO crystal structure. • The modified LLZO promotes fast lithium-ion transport at the ceramic/polymer interface and facilitates the formation of a stable LiF-rich solid-electrolyte interphase. • This surface engineering approach significantly improves the interfacial compatibility and long-term cycling stability of PEO-based composite solid electrolytes. Li₇La₃Zr₂O₁₂ (LLZO) and polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based composite solid electrolytes (CSE) demonstrate favorable potential for practical applications. However, the Li₂CO₃ passivation layer tends to form on the surface of LLZO particles, which severely degrades the electrochemical performance of the CSE. Herein, a facile surface modification strategy for LLZO is developed via a mild acid-base neutralization reaction between pentafluorobenzoic acid (PFA) and surface Li₂CO₃ in methanol solvent. With 3 wt% PFA addition, Li₂CO₃ can be efficiently eliminated, accompanied by the in-situ formation of a organic coating layer (3PFA@LLZO). The as-prepared 3PFA@LLZO can be then composited with a PEO matrix to obtain 3PFA@LLZO-PEO composite solid electrolytes. It has been found that the 3PFA@LLZO-PEO exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 1.23 × 10⁻⁴ S/cm at 30 °C. More importantly, the in-situ-formed lithium pentafluorobenzoate promotes the construction of a LiF-rich solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), which greatly enhances the interfacial stability and compatibility. Consequently, at 30 °C, The LiFePO₄(LFP)/Li half-cell displays a capacity retention of 80% after 400 cycles at 0.5C, while the LiNi 0.7 Co 0.1 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM)/Li half-cell presents a high capacity retention of 91.7% after 170 cycles at 0.3C. Therefore, it distinctly demonstrates that the proposed surface modification strategy effectively elevates the comprehensive electrochemical performance of PEO-LLZO composite solid electrolytes. LiCoO2 is widely used in lithium-ion batteries. Innovatively, this study reveals that by employing a synergistic strategy of Li volatilization and anion doping, LiCoO2-based materials demonstrate exceptional performance as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes. At high temperatures, Li volatilization forms a Co3O4 phase. Concurrently, anionic doping is achieved by substituting F ions for O ions. The synergy of these two strategies increases the concentration of oxygen vacancies and the formation of heterogeneous interfaces, effectively enhancing the adsorption, dissociation, and diffusion rates of oxygen, thereby significantly improving the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of LiCoO2 (LCO). LCOF1 (LiCoO1.9F0.1+Co3O4) exhibits an oxygen diffusion coefficient (Dchem) and surface exchange coefficient (Kchem) of 8.85 × 10–5 cm2 s–1 and 7.61 × 10–3 cm s–1, respectively, which are 45% and 26% higher than those of undoped LCO. Furthermore, at 800 °C, LCOF1 achieves a PPD of 0.86 W cm–2 and an Rp as low as 0.012 Ω cm2, representing improvements of 110% in PPD and a reduction of 78.6% in Rp compared to LCO. These findings indicate that the synergistic effect of Li volatilization and F doping is an effective strategy for enhancing the performance of Li-containing cathodes, offering valuable perspectives for the development of high-performance SOFC cathodes.
