Synergistically enhancing strength, toughness and electrical conductivity of CNTs-Mo/Cu composite by constructing network architecture

Zhen Li,Xianhui Wang,Yan Liang,Jituo Liu

To achieve the optimal trade-off among strength, toughness and electrical conductivity, the CNTs-Mo/Cu composites with different architectural structures were fabricated by the combination of wet mixing, ball milling, spark plasma sintering (SPS) and hot rolling. The microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the CNTs-Mo/Cu composites were investigated, and the strengthening and toughening mechanisms were also explored based on the experimental results along with finite element simulation and first-principles. It is found that CNTs-Mo exhibits a dispersed distribution in the Cu matrix for the 0.05 wt%CNTs-Mo/Cu composite, whereas a discontinuous network structure occurs in the 0.10 wt%CNTs-Mo/Cu composite. At 0.15 wt%CNTs-Mo, the complete continuous network architecture presents in the 0.15 wt%CNTs-Mo/Cu composite. Moreover, the Mo 2 C modified on the surface of CNTs forms a semi-coherent interface with Cu, which facilitates the enhancement on the interfacial bonding between CNTs and Cu. The 0.15 wt%CNTs-Mo/Cu composite with continuous network structure displays the maximum tensile strength of 455.1 MPa, the largest elongation of 39.1 % and the optimum fracture toughness of 22.4 MPa m 1/2 , while an excellent electrical conductivity of 93.2 %IACS can also be achieved simultaneously. Furthermore, the finite element simulations reveals that the network structure suppresses stress concentration and hinders crack propagation, thereby promoting load transfer. The first-principles calculation demonstrates that Cu-Mo 2 C and Mo 2 C-CNT heterostructures display the higher absolute value of binding energy and more obvious charge transfer than the CNT-Cu heterostructure, suggesting that the incorporation of Mo 2 C plays a crucial role in improving the interfacial stability and interfacial bonding strength of CNTs-Cu. The simultaneous improvement on strength and toughness of the 0.15 wt%CNTs-Mo/Cu composite can be attributed to strong interfacial bonding, effective load transfer, as well as crack deflection and bridging effects stemmed from the CNTs.

Mo/Fe–CaO Dual-Functional Materials for the Integrated CO2 Capture and Reverse Water–Gas Shift

Zhiyang Yu,Yuqi Shao,Wenyao Li,Yongzhuo Liu

Integrated CO2 capture and conversion (ICCC), which simultaneously achieves CO2 enrichment and in situ conversion, represents a promising strategy for reducing CO2 emissions. Dual-function materials (DFMs) that exhibit stable and highly efficient adsorption and catalytic conversion properties are essential to the success of this strategy. In this study, we developed novel Mo/Fe-doped CaO-based DFMs for the integrated CO2 capture and reverse water–gas shift (ICCC–RWGS) process. The synthesized DFMs was evaluated through adsorption–conversion cyclic experiments in a fixed-bed reactor, complemented by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) mapping, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations. The results indicate that the generated composites with a specialized structure not only provide stable support for CaO but also regulate the RWGS process. Specifically, the formation of Ca2Fe2O5 facilitates the hydrogenation of CaCO3 via redox reactions, while the generation of CaMoO4 and Ca2FeMoO6 alleviates both the volume-change effects of CaO caused by CO2 adsorption–hydrogenation cycles and the carbon deposition side reactions caused by Fe. DFMs with a Mo/Fe mass ratio of 1:9 exhibited a CO2 capture capacity of 14.8 mmol/g DFM, a CO yield of 11.4 mmol/g DFM, and good cyclic properties at 650 °C, making it a promising DFM for ICCC–RWGS. In conclusion, the utilization of superstructures with superior redox reactivity and structural stability, such as perovskite and spinel, offers valuable insights into the design of DFMs for ICCC.

Bifunctional Mo-doped SnS2 nanosheets enabling synergistic polysulfide confinement and catalytic conversion in Li–S batteries

Rong Li,ZhiHui Hao,Xiangwei Zhao,Huilin Zhou,Zhimin He,Qin Dong,Wei Hong,Xinglong Gou

Metal sulfides, such as SnS2, have been extensively studied as separator modifiers in lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) owing to their dual functionality in chemically anchoring lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and catalytically facilitating redox reactions. Nevertheless, poor electrical conductivity and limited catalytic efficiency restrict their practical implementation for LiPS transformation kinetics. To address these issues, we prepared Mo-doped SnS2 (Mo–SnS2) nanosheets with sulfur vacancies through a rapid one-pot formamide-assisted method. The incorporation of Mo heteroatoms not only improves conductivity but also induces favorable sulfur vacancies, synergistically promoting both adsorption and electrocatalytic conversion of LiPSs. The Li–S cell with a Mo–SnS2 nanosheet-modified separator delivers a remarkable initial capacity of 1007.5 mAh g−1 at 1C, maintains 799.5 mAh g−1 after 600 cycles with a low fading ratio of 0.034% per cycle, and demonstrates a favorable rate performance of 591.9 mAh g−1 at 5C. This defect engineering strategy through heteroatom doping offers a promising approach to concurrently mitigate the polysulfide shuttle effect and enhance the reaction kinetics in sulfur-based energy storage systems.

Modulation of Ni3Se2/NiSe electronic structure by Mo doping for efficient simultaneous H2 and formate production

Yanxia Wu,Hanbin Jin,Xiaoling Zhou,Lulu Guo,Qingtao Wang

Oxidizing glycerol to produce formate as a substitute for the traditional slow anodic oxygen evolution reaction is an effective strategy to enhance hydrogen production efficiency and reduce associated costs. However, the development of efficient and stable catalysts remains a significant challenge for the glycerol oxidation reaction coupled with water electrolysis. In this study, we synthesized molybdenum-doped Ni 3 Se 2 /NiSe nanomaterials supported on nickel foam using a straightforward one-step hydrothermal method. In a 1 M KOH solution, the Mo 0.2 catalyst exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic oxidation performance. Specifically, during the glycerol oxidation process, it achieved a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a remarkably low potential of 1.20 V (vs. RHE) and demonstrated good electrochemical stability at a current density of 50 mA cm −2 . Studies indicate that the incorporation of molybdenum atoms modifies the chemical environment of nickel and selenium atoms, which not only enhances the electrocatalytic activity of the catalyst but also improves the stability of the material itself. Additionally, it facilitates the catalytic oxidation of glycerol at the anode while concurrently promoting hydrogen evolution at the cathode, resulting in the efficient simultaneous production of hydrogen and formate.

High throughput preparation of Ni–Mo alloy thin films as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting

Jiameng Sun,Bin Yu,Fuquan Tan,Wanfeng Yang,Guanhua Cheng,Zhonghua Zhang

The synthesis of cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting is the main challenge in electrochemical hydrogen production . In this study, we adopted a high throughput method to prepare bi-metallic catalysts for oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). A series of Ni–Mo alloy electrocatalysts with tunable compositions were prepared by a simple co-sputtering method. Due to the synergistic effect between Ni and Mo, the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of the Ni–Mo alloy electrocatalysts is improved, resulting in excellent HER and OER performances. The Ni 90 Mo 10 electrocatalyst shows the best HER performance, with an extremely low overpotential of 58 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , while the Ni 40 Mo 60 electrocatalyst shows an overpotential of 258 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in OER. More significantly, the assembled Ni 40 Mo 60 //Ni 90 Mo 10 electrolyzer only needs a cell voltage of 1.57 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting .

The Synergistic Effect of Ni–Mo–S in Promoting the Hydrogen Storage Performance of Magnesium Hydride

Jingqi Che,Lingying Chen,Mengran Li,Rui Shi,Jiguang Zhang,Yana Liu,Jun Wang,Yunfeng Zhu

Catalytic doping is considered one of the most efficient strategies to achieve superior performance of MgH2, as rationally designed catalytic components can exhibit synergistic effects, thereby optimizing the kinetic pathways. In this study, the hydrothermal method was adopted to prepare clustered Ni–Mo–S catalysts, which were used to modify MgH2 to enhance its kinetic performance. Experimental results demonstrate that the molar proportion of Ni to Mo significantly impacts the modification effect of Ni–Mo–S catalysts on MgH2. Furthermore, the catalyst whose molar ratio of Ni/Mo is 7:2 achieves the optimal catalytic efficiency. Specifically, at 125 °C, MgH2-5 wt % Ni–Mo–S can absorb 4.61 wt % H2 in 1200 s. At a relatively low temperature of 250 °C, it manifests a rapid dehydrogenation rate and releases 5.81 wt % H2 in 2000 s. The hydrogenation (41.98 kJ/mol) and dehydrogenation (86.41 kJ/mol) activation energies of MgH2-5 wt % Ni–Mo–S are reduced by 48.87 and 43.79% compared to as-milled MgH2, respectively. Mechanism analysis suggests that this improvement may be ascribed to the following reasons: (1) The hydrogen pump effect of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 facilitates the hydrogen diffusion; (2) electron transfer between Mo species with different valence states weakens the Mg–H bonds; (3) the in situ formed MgS serves as diffusion channels for hydrogen atoms, expediting hydrogen transport. This work provides a valuable outlook for constructing highly active catalysts for MgH2 hydrogen storage.

Synergistic Modulation of Electronic Structure and Morphology in Porous Mo-NiFe LDH for Enhanced Electrocatalytic UOR

Hu Fan,Xianxu Chu,Rui Zhang,Jiarui Zhao,Jingfan Li,Jiahui Guo,Hongyi Chen,Xuelin Dong,Kun Wang,Yanli Zhou

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR), as a key process in renewable energy technologies and wastewater treatment, suffers from sluggish reaction kinetics due to its six-electron transfer characteristics, necessitating the development of highly efficient catalysts. In this work, a one-pot method combined with a sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) etching strategy was employed to successfully prepare porous Mo doped NiFe layered double hydroxide (P-Mo-NiFe-LDH), achieving a significant enhancement in UOR performance. Studies revealed that Mo doping altered the microscopic morphology of NiFe-LDH and promoted the transition of Ni 2+ /Fe 2+ to higher valence states (Ni³⁺/Fe³⁺), thereby improving the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the porous structure constructed by NaBH₄ etching not only exposed abundant active sites but also optimized the electron transport pathways. This synergistic effect of morphology regulation and electronic structure optimization enabled P-Mo-NiFe-LDH to exhibit outstanding catalytic performance in a 1 M KOH + 0.33 M urea electrolyte: a current density of 10 mA•cm⁻² was achieved at just 1.39 V (vs. RHE), with a Tafel slope of 38.7 mV•dec⁻¹, demonstrating a clear advantage over most reported NiFe based catalysts. This catalytic potential is 90 mV lower than that of the water oxidation reaction, offering certain energy-saving benefits. The synergistic strategy of surface pore structures and heteroatom doping in this work provides new insights for designing high-performance LDH-based electrocatalysts.

Effects of shape and size of second phase on mechanical properties of sintered Mo-Y2O3 alloys

Zhuang-zhi WU,Na ZHAO,Yao LU,Hai-lang LIU,Bo-hua DUAN,Xin-li LIU,De-zhi WANG

The morphology and size of second phase greatly influence the strengthening effect on oxidation dispersion strengthened Mo alloys. In this work, a novel nanostructuring strategy is adopted to modify the second phase of Y 2 O 3 , and the corresponding effects of particle shape and size on mechanical properties of sintered Mo-Y 2 O 3 alloys were investigated. It is found that spherical particles with sizes below 200 nm are preferred due to the dominant intragranular distribution of second phases associated with better strengthening effect originating from dislocation pinning. With smaller particle size of Y 2 O 3 nanospheres (105 nm), the tensile strength of corresponding Mo alloy is enhanced by about 43.8%, much higher than that (8.3%) reinforced by second phase nanospheres with larger particle size (322 nm). Meanwhile, with similar particle size (around 100 nm), the spherical shape exhibits better strengthening effect than the one reinforced by one-dimensional rod-like second phase.

Atmosphere-Induced Strategy of Mo-Promoted Ni Encapsulated in Silicalite-1 for Dry Reforming of Methane

Minjie Hu,Chan Wu,Hui Yue,Sichun Yang,Xu Hou,Enxian Yuan,Jiancheng Zhou

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) offers a promising route to convert greenhouse gases into syngas, although fabricating Ni-based catalysts with long-term stability during reaction conditions remains challenging. Unlike the conventional H 2 pretreatment typically required for activating Ni-based catalysts prior to DRM, we herein reported a one-pot hydrothermal encapsulation strategy to directly synthesize Ni-Mo bimetallic catalysts confined within silicalite-1 (Ni x Mo@S-1) under CH 4 /CO 2 atmosphere for catalyst activation. In contrast to the conventional impregnation Ni 5 Mo/S-1 catalyst, this structural encapsulation approach effectively improved nickel dispersion and enhanced catalytic performance. XRD and TEM revealed that the encapsulated Ni 5 Mo@S-1 exhibited ultra-small nanoparticle size (∼2.3 nm) and Mo promoted high dispersion of Ni nanoparticles. Furthermore, XPS and XANES confirmed that Ni 5 Mo@S-1 facilitated the direct reduction of NiO to metallic Ni under CH 4 /CO 2 atmosphere, thereby inducing active Ni 0 sites and Ni-O-Si bond formation with reinforced metal-support interaction. Graphical The CH 4 /CO 2 atmosphere-induced strategy of encapsulation of Ni x Mo@S-1 enhances DRM performance. Pretreatment with different atmosphere revealed the distinct roles of CH 4 /CO 2 in fabricating the confinement structure of Ni 5 Mo@S-1 for DRM. The CH 4 /CO 2 pretreatment atmosphere directly drives the formation of both active Ni 0 and stabilizing Ni─O─Si bonds with the promotion of Mo, remarkably reinforcing metal-support interaction.

Rapid adsorption of methylene blue on a graphene oxide-supported Fe-Mo nanomaterial: mechanism and application

Xin Tian,Kehan He,Wen-shi Jiang,Jun-jie Zhang,Cheng Wang,Yanhua Zhang,Yuan-hui Li,Yu-han Wang

A Fe-Mo/graphene oxide (GO) nanomaterial prepared by a simple reduction method was investigated in this study. This material demonstrated the ability to rapidly adsorb methylene blue (MB) from wastewater at different concentrations within 5 min, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 162 mg/g at 25 °C. Furthermore, as the temperature rises, the adsorption capacity of the Fe-Mo/GO material decreases slightly. The results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) also indicate that this material has good thermal stability at low temperatures. The detailed analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the well-dispersed molybdenum in the Fe-Mo/GO nanomaterial is essential for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). The adsorption behavior and equilibrium adsorption isotherm of Fe-Mo/GO nanomaterials align with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model, respectively. Compared with the single-functional Fe/GO material, this bimetallic composite not only addresses GO recovery issues but also improves the low adsorption rate typical of single-iron materials.

Self-Assembled Spatially Confined Mo-Based Nanoreactor for Multimechanistic Tumor Therapy Driven by Self-Cascade Catalysis

Hongfei Su,Jiancheng Sun,Xiao He,Zhiyong Zhang,Peng Xu,Zhouyan Chang,Qiang Wang,Wenyan Yin,Yuliang Zhao

Addressing the stability–activity imbalance of natural enzyme–nanozyme self-cascade catalysis for tumor-specific therapy while inhibiting tumor metastasis via multiple killing mechanisms remains a challenge. Herein, we constructed a tumor microenvironment (TME)-responsive mannose-modified MoS2–tannic acid (TA)–Fe–glucose oxidase (GOx) nanoreactor (MTFGM) via a spatial confinement strategy relying on metal–polyphenol coordination and electrostatic interactions for addressing this issue. GOx was confined on MoS2 via hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking. TA’s polyphenol network and mannose’s shielding effect enhanced GOx stability by preventing off-target catalysis, while TA–Fe on MoS2 boosted peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity by facilitating Fe3+/Fe2+ electron transfer for cocatalysis. In the TME, GOx depleted glucose to self-supply H2O2 and gluconic acid, which activated the POD-like activity of MTFGM to decompose H2O2 into toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) with a maximum reaction rate 4-fold higher and turnover number 170-fold higher than pristine MoS2. Simultaneously, MoS2–TA–Fe’s glutathione peroxidase-like activity plus H2Sn production continuously consumed glutathione (GSH) to break tumor antioxidant defense. This cascade synergistically induced four tumor-killing mechanisms: GOx-mediated metabolic starvation, •OH-triggered apoptosis, GSH depletion-driven ferroptosis, and cystine accumulation/H2Sn-induced disulfidptosis collectively disrupt tumor redox homeostasis and inhibit metastasis. Our work clarifies the structure–activity relationship of confinement-based cascade nanoreactors and provides a TME-responsive multiple cell death paradigm for tumor-specific therapy.

A Mo-doped amorphous Ni(OH)2 modified Fe3O4 heterostructure catalyst for enhancing hydrogen evolution reaction

Bingchen Li,Zexiong Cui,Yufeng Tao,Jin Xiong,Jinbo Gao,Lihua Liu,Shiwei Song,Pengfei Tian

The slow kinetics of the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) present a significant obstacle for alkaline water electrolysis. Consequently, developing non-precious metal HER catalysts with high activity and stability remains a challenge. This study reports a heterostructure catalyst composed of Mo-doped amorphous Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets modified Fe 3 O 4 crystal nanoparticles (Mo-NiOH@Fe 3 O 4 ). This unique structure exhibits a three-dimensional, coral-like structure, which significantly increases the electrochemically active surface area and exposes more active sites to the electrolyte. The incorporation of Mo-doped amorphous Ni(OH) 2 enriches electron density around Fe atoms, modulating their electronic state and optimizing intrinsic activity. As an alkaline hydrogen evolution catalyst, Mo-NiOH@Fe 3 O 4 requires overpotentials of only 23.7 and 140.6 mV to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, demonstrating exceptional catalytic activity. Furthermore, it shows negligible performance degradation at 100 mA cm −2 and maintains stability for over 120 h. This work demonstrates that a heterostructure strategy, integrating Mo-doped amorphous Ni(OH) 2 with Fe 3 O 4 , provides a reasonable route for developing low-cost, high-performance HER catalysts.
