A MXene modification strategy of Prussian blue cathodes toward a stable cathode electrolyte interphase and suppressed Mn dissolution

Zerui Chen,Yingxinjie Wang,Jie Wang,Xiaohui Li,Guohao Li,Ziying Zhang,Zhenjun Wu,Xiuqiang Xie,Nan Zhang

Manganese-based Prussian blue analogues (PBA) have garnered widespread attention as the promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, the inevitable Jahn-Teller distortion and the formation of unstable and uneven cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) result in severe Mn dissolution and poor cycling stability. Herein, we report a simple MXene modification strategy cold pressing method to embed Prussian blue cathode materials into MXene nanosheets. This highly conductive protective barrier not only mitigates the Jahn-Teller distortion in Mn-PBA and maintains the integrity of the particles during charge–discharge cycles, but also partially suppresses side reactions between the electrolyte and cathode interface through surface functional groups (−F), resulting in a thin and uniform CEI. The protection of the stable CEI and MXene nanosheets simultaneously alleviate the Jahn-Teller effect and suppress the Mn dissolution during long cycling, thus allowing the cathode material to retain ∼ 80 % of its capacity after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1000 mA g −1 . This study highlights the importance of stabilizing the cathode interface and provides a novel approach for preparing highly stable manganese-based PBA cathode.

Quinolinediol Molecule Electrode and MXene for Asymmetric Supercapacitors with Efficient Energy Storage

Long Jiao,Fuquan Ma,Xiaotong Wang,Zhimin Li,Zhongai Hu,Qing Yin

Asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) need positive and negative electrodes to produce a larger redox peak position difference to achieve a higher energy density. Here, 2,8-quinolinediol (QD) is adopted to modify reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and prepare an organic molecule electrode (OME), in which the Faraday reaction occurs in a more positive potential range. The electrochemical tests show that the optimized OME (QD/rGO-0.75) releases a high special capacitance (371 F g–1 at 5 mV s–1) and exhibits an excellent rate capability (86.8% of the initial value at a scanning rate multiple of nearly 20 times). Meanwhile, an MXene (Ti3C2Tx) with a relatively negative potential is prepared. QD/rGO-0.75 and Ti3C2Tx are, respectively, used as positive and negative electrodes to assemble an ASC. The measurements indicate that the assembled ASC is able to store charge within a wide voltage window of 1.6 V in the 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte and exhibit better energy storage performance. Furthermore, the device delivers an excellent cycling stability (83.5%, over 10,000 cycles). The two series-connected devices can light 37 red light-emitting diodes, indicating their potential application.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane/MXene Nanosheet/SiO2 Nanoparticle Composites for Superhydrophobic Surfaces and Wearable Strain Sensors

Ying Huang,Hualong Huang,Yinghao Guo,Yulin Ding,Yifan Zhou,Hang Yu,Yinghao Liu,Wenmu Li

The poor inherent water resistance and electrical performance of paper-based electrodes restrict their applications in electronic products. Organic–inorganic nanocomposites, which can integrate the merits of various materials, are the best way to compensate for these shortcomings. In this study, a facile strategy was developed to fabricate a superhydrophobic tissue/MXene/TPU/SiO2 paper-based composite for multidimensional bionic surface and wearable strain sensor applications. Inspired by taro leaves, superhydrophobic surfaces consisting of TPU/SiO2 micronanospheres were prepared by electrospinning. High strain-sensing performance is achieved by the microcrack extension mechanism of the tissue/MXene electrode. The integrity of the tissue/MXene/TPU/SiO2 paper-based composites was enhanced by systematically optimizing the multilayered assembly processes and technologies. Our composite paper demonstrated high mechanical strength and highly effective antibacterial and self-cleaning properties (water contact angle, WCA = 157°), which could not only inhibit the adhesion of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus but also repel solid contaminants upon washing with water. The paper-based wearable strain sensor displayed a very high sensitivity (gauge factor, GF = 580) over a broad strain range (bending angle from 0 to 160°) and a fast response time (53 ms). Our e-skin sensor array can effectively capture the wrist motions of table tennis players. Moreover, this sensor also showed a very high breathability (56.5 g·m–2·h–1) for comfort of wear. Notably, our paper-based sensors can be disposed of by burning, which can mitigate potential electronic waste pollution. Our strategy for fabricating paper-based sensors with superhydrophobicity, breathability, and antimicrobial properties could potentially provide promising prospects for future flexible electronics.

Hydrophilic antifouling 3D porous MXene/holey graphene nanocomposites for electrochemical determination of dopamine

Yan Zhang,Lu Zhang,Chenxing Li,Jingxuan Han,Wenwei Huang,Jiayi Zhou,Yongqiang Yang

Dopamine (DA) detection is essential for diagnosis and evaluation of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer and schizophrenia. However, conventional electrochemical sensors are vulnerable to biofouling in complex biological fluids, which leads to significant decrease in sensor performance. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, a novel 2D material with excellent conductivity and hydrophilicity, is a potential antifouling material for electrodes. But oxidation can strongly influence the performance of MXene. In this work, an antifouling electrochemical sensor for DA detection was fabricated by combining MXene and holey graphene (HG). Multilayer MXene (M−MXene) and single-layer MXene (S-MXene) were combined with HG to form a 3D porous network. HG not only prevented the restacking of MXene but it also improved the stability of MXene. Owing to the excellent conductivity and large surface area, S-MXene/HG modified electrode had a fast electron transfer and excellent electrocatalytic activity for DA compared with M−MXene/HG. Furthermore, S-MXene/HG possessed higher surface hydrophilicity and enhanced biofouling resistance than M−MXene/HG and HG modified electrode. S-MXene sensor displayed excellent analytical performance for DA and antifouling ability in complex fluids. It offers new promising possibilities for its clinical application.

Rational construction of densely packed Si/MXene composite microspheres enables favorable sodium storage

Wang Hui-Qi,Zhao Ya-Xin,Gou Li,Wang Li-Yong,Wang Mei,Li Ying,Hu Sheng-Liang

The fast and reversible sodiation/desodiation of anode materials remains an indelible yet fascinating target. Herein, a class of the densely packed Si/MXene composite microspheres is constructed and prepared, taking advantages of the synergistic effects of the activated Si nanoparticles and conductive flower-like MXene microspheres with ample ion-diffusion pathways. Consequently, the intrinsic MXene nanosheets with intelligently regulated interlayer spacing can accommodate the volume change induced strain during cycling, and the strong interaction between the Si and MXene matrix greatly contributes to the robust structural stability. As expected, the Si/MXene composite architecture exhibits boosted sodium storage performance, in terms of an inspiring reversible capacity of 751 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 , remarkable long-term cycling stability of 376 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 over 500 cycles, and outstanding rate capability (after one consecutive current density changing from 0.1 to 2.0 A·g −1 , a large capacity of 275 mAh·g −1 is regained after suddenly returning the initial current density back to 0.1 A·g −1 and in the subsequent 200 cycles this composite architecture anode still delivers a capacity of 332 mAh·g −1 ). The kinetics analysis indicates superior pseudocapacitive property, high electronic conductivity, and favorable sodium-ion adsorption and diffusion capability, confirming fast sodium storage performance. Impressively, ex-situ X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction characterizations corroborate the formation of NaSi 6 as the main sodiation products during the reversible evolutions of cycled proceeding with sodium-ion insertion. This work sheds light on the elaborate design of silicon-based nanostructured anodes towards advanced high-performance sodium-ion batteries. Graphical abstract

Unraveling programmable motion of MXene/polyurethane motor driven by the near-infrared light

Yu Xu,Haoyu Qi,Mingming Sun,Zongxu Liu,Qing Liu,Kang Li,Wei Guo

While light-driven motors that can exhibit characteristic response have attracted significant research attention, they generally lack a stable and editable structure for exploration the versatile motions and their practical applications. Herein, a MXene/Polyurethane (PU) motor with robust “brick-and-mortar” structure was configured as the platform to study the light-driven self-propelled behaviors and mechanisms. Our experimental and theoretical results demonstrated that the external near-infrared laser (NIR) light stimulus triggers the photothermal Marangoni effect to create the local difference in surface tension, which serves as the driving force to overcome the flow resistance. The MXene/PU motor floating on the water phase exhibited programmable motion under the irradiation of NIR light, especially, complex motions such as directed motion, clockwise and counterclockwise rotations, and intermittent motion (alteration between resting and moving states). More interestingly, the MXene/PU motor can not only move along any complicated routes such as maze but also execute the stir task at designated place on the water surface. We believe that the fabricated MXene/PU motor has potential to fundamentally solve challenges in cargo transport and beyond, and the concept of remote motion-control of micro-objects by external stimulus can inspire further explorations of design of self-propelled motors and systems.

Guangyong Zeng,Ke Wei,Haiyan Zhang,Jun Zhang,Qingquan Lin,Xiaojie Cheng,Arijit Sengupta,Yu-Hsuan Chiao

The oily wastewater is one of the major waste streams generated due to industrialization. The membrane technology has prominent advantages in the field of oily wastewater treatment . In present investigation, halloysite nanotubes (Hal) and polydopamine (PDA) were utilized to synergistically modify MXene followed by the fabrication of a series of Hal@MXene-PDA two-dimensional (2D) composite membranes by vacuum filtration. Observing the morphology of the membrane and exploring the change in interlayer space by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), it was confirmed that, the composite membrane was successfully modified. The results revealed that, the Hal@MXene-PDA composite membrane exhibits higher hydrophilicity compared to the virgin membrane. The pure water flux using the composite membrane was found to be 5036.2 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , and the rejections of petroleum ether and lubricating oil were evaluated as 99.8%. The modified membrane(M6) also shows good anti-fouling ability in the anti-fouling cycle test and hence can be considered as a potential candidate for oil-water separation.

Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped Nb2C-MXene nanosheets for the ultrasensitive electrochemical detection dopamine under acidic conditions in gastric juice

Meiling Lian,Yuqing Shi,Wei Zhang,Jingbo Zhao,Da Chen

This work reports the synthesis and application of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped Nb 2 C MXene (NS-Nb 2 C) for the sensing of dopamine (DA) in gastric juice. NS-Nb 2 C MXene was successfully synthesized in a one-step treatment of Nb 2 C using thiourea as N,S resource. The heteroatom doping strategy enables introduction of N,S into MXene nanosheets and simultaneously induces the increased interlayer spacing, high surface area, and enhanced electrical conductivity. It was found that NS-Nb 2 C is more electrochemically active than multilayered Nb 2 C nanosheets (ML-Nb 2 C) and delaminated Nb 2 C nanosheets (DL-Nb 2 C). Based on this, the as-prepared NS-Nb 2 C/Nafion/GCE was used to study the electrochemical behavior of dopamine in pH = 3.0. The sensing interface not only utilizes the unique two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet morphology of Nb 2 C that has a larger surface area and conductive network, but also takes advantage of the more active sites provided by doping. This enables the sensor to achieve ultra-sensitive detection of dopamine (S/N = 3) with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.12 µM. In addition, the prepared sensor has good stability and selectivity, and the results of detecting DA in simulated gastric juice is satisfactory. The results indicated that the Nb-based MXenes provided a promising tool for acidic electrochemical sensing applications.

MXene (Ti3C2Tx)-Ag nanocomplex as efficient and quantitative SERS biosensor platform by in-situ PDDA electrostatic self-assembly synthesis strategy

Rongyang Liu,Li Jiang,Zizhen Yu,Xufeng Jing,Xiu Liang,Dan Wang,Bo Yang,Chengxing Lu,Wei Zhou,Shangzhong Jin

Recent years, two-dimensional transition metal carbonitrides, MXene, have emerged as SERS substrates due to their unique optical and electrical properties. In order to combine the advantages of metal nanoparticles and MXene for SERS substrates, this paper prepared an MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) -Ag nanoparticles (NPs) hybrid biosensor through in-situ electrostatic self-assembly method, in which the citrate-coated Ag NPs are loaded on the negatively surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes through positively charged PDDA polymer. The characterizations show that a large number of Ag NPs uniformly adsorb on both side of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets. The prepared platform exhibits excellent SERS performance, long-term stability and good uniformity by detecting 4-MBA molecules. The electromagnetic field distribution was simulated to theoretically show the Raman enhancement mechanism of this platform. In order to explore the possible application of the sensor in clinical diagnosis and monitoring of biological environment, the platform was used for biomolecule detection. The detection limit of adenine molecules can be as low as 10 −8 M. For dopamine molecules with concentration ranging from 5 × 10 -6 M to 5 × 10 −8 M, the SERS results show a linear relationship between peak intensity and concentration of dopamine molecules. The biosensor was applied for serum detection. The results suggest that MXene-PDDA-Ag NPs hybrid platform could be used as a sensitive and uniform biosensor for label-free quantitative detection of bio-molecular based on SERS method, which could be applied in the field of biotechnology.

Regulating the MXene–Zinc Interfacial Structure toward a Highly Revisable Metal Anode of Zinc–Air Batteries

Di Yang,Jinsheng Li,Changpeng Liu,Junjie Ge,Wei Xing,Jianbing Zhu

Rechargeable aqueous Zn–air batteries have been regarded as one of the most promising systems for flexible energy storage devices due to their high specific energy, safety, and cost effectiveness. However, Zn metal anodes exposed to strong alkaline electrolytes suffer from several issues such as corrosion, dissolution, and passivation, resulting in extremely poor cycle reversibility. Motivated by this challenge, we herein strategically design an MXene/Zn metal anode interfacial structure with single/few-layer Ti3C2Tx MXene as a protective layer. Such a design not only isolates the direct contact between Zn metal anodes and electrolytes but also inhibits zincate dissolution due to the ion screening function of Ti3C2Tx, potentially addressing the stubborn issues that Zn anodes faced with. As a result, the Ti3C2Tx-protected Zn metal anode exhibits superior cycle stability (stable for more than 400 cycles) to the bare Zn counterpart (20 cycles) at a high current density of 5.0 mA cm–2. When integrated into Zn–air coin cells, it has a high depth of discharge of 91% and operates stably for 140 cycles with small resistance. More interestingly, the excellent flexibility of the as-designed Ti3C2Tx-protected Zn metal anode endows the quasi-solid-state batteries with admirable voltage stability at different bending angles from 0 to 180°.

Transparent, conductive and flexible MXene grid/silver nanowire hierarchical films for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding

Meng Jin,Wei Chen,Liu-Xin Liu,Hao-Bin Zhang,Lvxuan Ye,Peng Min,Zhong-Zhen Yu

Conventional conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene films are limited by their low transparency and brittleness. Herein, we demonstrate a crack-template assisted spraying methodology for the fabrication of transparent, flexible, and conductive MXene grid–silver nanowire hierarchical films for high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, joule heating, and resistive touch panel applications. The conductive grid skeletons are constructed by depositing MXene sheets into the cracks of the templates followed by removing the templates. By tuning the loading density of MXene sheets, both optical transmittance and electrical conductivity of MXene grid skeletons can be precisely manipulated. The resultant conductive grid exhibits an EMI shielding efficiency of 21.7 dB and fair transmittance simultaneously. Crucially, one-dimensional silver nanowires (AgNWs) are adopted to construct hierarchical structures for increasing electron transport channels and enhancing light penetration. The hierarchical MXene grid/AgNW film achieves a high transmittance of 81% and an excellent EMI shielding efficiency of 24.6 dB. The transparent, flexible and conductive MXene grid/AgNW film is suitable for transparent heaters and resistive touch panels. The integration of grid fabrication and the hierarchical structure design effectively balances the transparency and the conductivity, and is promising for producing multifunctional films with high transparency, high conductivity, and high EMI shielding efficiency.

Superhydrophobic flexible conductive PFDT/CB/MXene@Paper for high-efficiency EMI shielding and Joule heating applications

Qingtao Li,Wenke Yang,Kang Sun,Yan Guo,Hu Liu,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Flexible wearable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have attracted great attention with the development of portable electronic devices, and paper based EMI shielding materials turn to be ideal candidates due to their flexibility, biodegradability and low cost. In this study, conductive MXene nanosheet decorated paper was developed through a simple dip-coating technique, where the MXene nanosheets can be strongly adhered onto the surface of cellulose fiber to construct an effective conductive network. Meanwhile, a low surface energy and micro–nano-structured 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT)/carbon black (CB) layer was further introduced onto the surface to construct a superhydrophobic surface, avoiding the hygroexpansion of paper in water or moisture environments effectively. As a result, the prepared PFDT/CB/MXene@Paper exhibits reflection dominant EMI shielding performance, and a specific SE value of up to 3339.6 dB cm−2 g−1 was achieved. Importantly, the EMI shielding performance can be well maintained towards cyclic bending and in various acid, alkali, salt, and UV environments, which enhance the applicability of paper based functional materials significantly. Finally, its high conductivity also endows it with good Joule heating performance, improving the wearing comfort when used as a wearable EMI shielding material. This study will undoubtedly provide a high-efficiency design strategy for fabricating high-performance paper based EMI shielding materials.
