Highly effective catalysts are of great importance for artificial nitrogen fixation. Inspired by the natural nitrogenase, we biomimetically designed an inorganic catalyst, Mo(IV)-doped FeS2, for electroreduction of dinitrogen to ammonia. The Mo(IV) ions favor the adsorption and activation of N2, while the FeS2 substrate depresses the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction, and the two factors jointly endow the catalyst with a high Faraday efficiency of 14.41% at −0.2 V versus RHE.

Cobalt-chrome-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloy possesses outstanding strength, wear, and corrosion resistance and is a good material candidate for making dental and orthopedic implants. Spherical Co-Cr-Mo powder for additive manufacturing is usually costly due to the high-temperature melting processes and low yield of the powder with desirable particle size in the conventional melt-atomization process. A novel process for making spherical Co-Cr-Mo alloy powder through a simple meltless granulation and sintering process is described herein. The results indicate that the compositional segregation problem can be overcome and high-temperature operation avoided. Segregation-free powder was obtained after sintering above 1200°C. The powder was purified during sintering in a hydrogen atmosphere. The hydrogen purification mechanism is discussed with the aid of thermodynamic modeling using HSC Chemistry software. The oxygen content in the final powder can be controlled to < 0.2 wt.% for powder with particle size < 107 µ m. The final powder retained good spherical morphology.

It is well-known that sluggish surface charge transfer on a cocatalyst-free hematite photoanode limits its solar conversion efficiency in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Here, Mo is used as a codopant synergistically with Sn in α-Fe2O3 to solve this problem. Besides causing a slight narrowing of bandgap, morphological change, and even sublimation loss of α-Fe2O3, Mo doping also imports low-valent Fe due to charge compensation with MoV/VI as indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Bader charge computation, which increases the densities of donor and surfaces states. Although rate law analysis demonstrates slight retardation of surface reaction kinetics, strongly inhibited charge recombination in surface states by Mo doping still contributes to improving the photocurrent density and reducing the onset potential of α-Fe2O3 and Sn–Fe2O3 photoanodes. An optimized Mo/Sn–Fe2O3 photoanode can realize a low onset potential of 0.68 V vs a reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE) and a photocurrent density of 1.97 mA cm–2 at 1.23 VRHE, enhanced by 58% and 20 times compared to Sn–Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3, respectively. It is demonstrated that Mo doping promotes charge transfer which differs from most traditional n-type dopants that facilitate charge separation but inhibit charge transfer. This report expands the n-type dopant family of α-Fe2O3 for efficient PEC water splitting.

Graphitic carbon nitride(g-C 3 N 4 ) microspheres supported α-FeO(OH) hybrids[α-FeO(OH)/g-C 3 N 4 ] were prepared by means of a self-assembly method in deionized water. By UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, it has been confirmed that α-FeO(OH)/g-C 3 N 4 has a wider absorption range than g-C 3 N 4 . The feature of α-FeO(OH)/g-C 3 N 4 can be attributed to the efficient separation of the electron-hole pairs with photoluminescence spectra. The degradation rate of methyl orange(MO) is up to 99% under the optimal conditions of 110 min, initial concentration of 30 mg/L, an α-FeO(OH)/g-C 3 N 4 dosage of 15 mg as well as visible light. The mechanism for this photocatalytic reaction was proposed, with hydroxyl radicals being a major active catalytic species.

In this study, magnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 @ HAP-Mo catalyst was successfully prepared and characterized. The activity of the as prepared γ-Fe 2 O 3 @ HAP-Mo catalyst was evaluated by the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with molecular oxygen. Some important reaction parameters were investigated and it was found that both the solvent and the reaction temperature showed great effect on HMF conversion and products selectivity. The highest HMF conversion of 95.8% was obtained in 4-chlorotoluene at the reaction temperature of 120 °C for 12 h, and the corresponding 2,5-diformylfuran, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid yields were 67.5, 19.6 and 8.7%, respectively. The γ-Fe 2 O 3 @ HAP-Mo catalyst could be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused several times without the loss of its catalytic activity.

SiC p /Hastelloy composites were fabricated by pressureless Ti-activated infiltration process. The wetting and infiltration behaviors of Hastelloy on the SiC substrates and the interfacial reaction between the SiC particles and Hastelloy were investigated by real-time observation system, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) system. The results demonstrated that the Hastelloy had a good wettability on SiC ceramic and could spontaneously infiltrate into the Ti-activated SiC preform. Moreover, intensive interfacial reaction similar to SiC/Ni system was found between the SiC particles and Hastelloy, which induced defects in the microstructure. In order to inhibit the interfacial reaction, Al 2 O 3 coating on SiC particles was adopted as a diffusion barrier, which effectively reduced the extent of the interfacial reactions.

Recently, many scientists have focused on the development of green industrial technology. However, the process of synthesizing vinyl chloride faces the problem of Hg pollution. Via a novel approach, we used two elements Mo and Ti to prepare an inexpensive and green binary transition metal nitride (BTMN) as the active ingredient in a catalyst with nano-sized particles and an excellent degree of activation, which was supported on activated carbon. When the Mo/Ti mole ratio was 3:1, the conversion of acetylene reached 89% and the selectivity exceeded 98.5%. The doping of Ti in Mo-based catalysts reduced the capacity of adsorption for acetylene and also increased the adsorption of hydrogen chloride. Most importantly, the performance of the BTMN excelled those of the individual transition metal nitrides, due to the synergistic activity between Mo and Ti. This will expand the new epoch of the employment of transition metal nitrides as catalysts in the hydrochlorination of acetylene reaction. Keywords:binary transition metal nitride;acetylene hydrochlorination

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is considered to be one of the most promising strategies to create hydrogen. Recently, searching high-efficient, stable, and earth-abundant electrocatalysts to replace precious metals for practical utilizations of HER is attracting more and more attentions. Herein, novel molybdenum carbide nanobelts containing Mo of high-valence state derived from MoO 3 -ethylenediamine inorganic/organic hybrid precursors are successfully synthesized via a facile one-pot pyrolysis method. The molybdenum carbide nanobelts are characterized using XRD , SEM, TEM and XPS . Moreover, the high-valence state Mo and their relative content in the molybdenum carbide nanobelts can be identified by XPS. The high-resolution XPS spectra of Mo 3d indicates in the molybdenum carbide nanobelts the proportion of high-valence state Mo in active Mo components is 51.3%. More importantly, the as-synthesized products exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for HER with a low onset overpotential of 50 mV and a small Tafel slope of 49.6 mV dec −1 in acidic medium (0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ). Besides, the catalysts require only overpotentials of 143 and 234 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 220 mA cm −2 , respectively. Furthermore, they also exhibit good durability after 2000 cycles and constant current density test. Such excellent electrocatalytic HER performance can be ascribed to the high intrinsic activity of high-valence state Mo in Molybdenum Carbide. Synthesizing molybdenum carbide with high-valence state Mo electrocatalysts for HER will open up an exciting alternative avenue to acquire outstanding HER electrocatalytic activity.

A CdS–MoS2 photoelectrode with a double-layer core–shell structure was prepared using a simple electrodeposition–in situ sulfurization method on a Mo substrate. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared electrodes was evaluated using a photoelectrochemical H2-generation experiment. The photocurrent and photon–electron conversion efficiency of the CdS–MoS2 photoelectrode were nearly double those of a CdS photoanode prepared on FTO glass. The high activity of the CdS–MoS2 photoelectrode was due to the higher separation efficiency of carriers caused by the formed CdS–MoS2 Janus heterojunction structure, which made directional transmission and electron–hole separation possible. Our experiments show that, in addition to being a good co-catalyst in powder material for photocatalytic hydrogen production, MoS2 can also be used as an electron acceptor layer to enhance electron–hole separation.

The modification of petroleum resin (PR) by catalytic hydrogenation is an upgrading technology for producing high-value-added hydrogenated petroleum resin (HPR) from of pyrolysis petroleum by-product. This research employed alumina supports with different pore size distributions to prepare supported Mo-Ni type catalysts and investigated their catalytic hydrogenation performance on C 9 petroleum resin. Catalysts prepared with bimodal pore alumina (BPA) supports effectively overcome the limitations of internal diffusion and increase the quantity of active sites, thus increasing the catalytic activity for hydrogenation. The experimental results demonstrated that MoNi/BPA achieved a hydrogenation degree of 99.94% for HC 9 PR, with the hydrogenated product having a Pt–Co colour of 2.37 Hazen. After 140 h of reaction, the hydrogenation degree of HC 9 PR remained at 96.51%, and the Pt–Co colour value was lower than 40 Hazen. This investigation confirms that solving the mass transfer issues of petroleum resin molecules in the pores of supported catalysts is key to designing efficient hydrogenation catalysts for petroleum resin. The ideal mechanical performances of in-situ synthesized graphene/Ni composite have not been obtained due to the weak interfacial bonding. To realize the high strengthening efficiency of graphene, this paper proposed a Mo microalloying strategy. The influences of Mo concentration on the microstructures, interfacial bonding characteristics, and quasi-static tensile behavior of the composite were investigated. The results showed an appropriate Mo concentration (0.2 wt%) not only enabled a strong interfacial bonding but also reduced the stacking fault energy of the Ni matrix, generating the twinning and further altering the strength and plasticity. The yield and tensile strength of the composite were increased by 215.3 % and 20.3 %, respectively, but no significant reduction in plasticity was observed. The strengthening of the composite was ascribed to the effective load transfer, twinning, and dislocation strengthening, whereas the critical role of large-area graphene nanosheets and deformation twinning in suppressing the crack propagation ensured a high toughness.

In the present study, we developed Mo- and Zr-added W-Y2O3 composites, and investigated their surface damage, including commercially available W induced by He and D as well as He and D mixture plasmas. Blistering was not observed in the D-plasma-irradiated W and W composites. The thickness of the damaged surface layer due to He plasma exposure of the W-Mo-Y2O3 composite was similar to that of W. However, the thickness of the damaged surface layer of the W-Y2O3 composite was half that of W. In addition, the thickness of the damaged surface layer of the W-Zr-Y2O3 composite was further improved by 5 times. Y2O3 nanoparticles, especially refined Zr-Y-O nanoparticles, act as He trap sites to suppress the formation and growth of He bubbles. Furthermore, the W-O-Y and W-O-Zr-Y nanoparticles increased the solubility of He and delayed He diffusion, hindering the formation of He bubbles.
