In-situ construction of Schottky junctions with synergistic interaction of oxygen vacancies in Mo@MoO3 nanosheets for efficient N2 photoreduction

Wenming Ding,Xiaoman Li,Senda Su,Shengbo Yuan,Zhenyu Liu,Yue Cao,Linghu Meng,Yang Yang,Min Luo

Defect engineering is a promising technique that can activate nitrogen by injecting electrons into the anti-bonding molecular orbital of nitrogen through anion vacancies. Moreover, compared to a single component, Schottky junctions can effectively overcome rapid electron recombination, thereby significantly enhancing photoelectron utilization efficiency. In this work, we prepared Mo modified MoO 3 nanosheets with abundant oxygen vacancies by a solvothermal method and investigated the effect of synergistic interactions between Schottky junctions and oxygen vacancies on the photocatalytic performance of N 2 reduction reaction (NRR). The photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance of Mo@MoO 3 nanosheets (MoO 3 -6) reached 50.78 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 without any scavenger, which was about 3 times that of commercial MoO 3 . The Schottky barrier creates a built-in electric field generating charge transfer channels during the photocatalytic reaction, while the oxygen vacancies trap electrons to activate N 2 , and together with Mo, broaden the light absorption range of the catalyst, facilitating more efficient transfer of excited electrons to the active site. The synergetic advantages of Schottky junctions and oxygen vacancies are exploited in advancing the photocatalytic effect, providing new opportunities and challenges for the development of metal oxide-based materials.

Depolymerization of Kraft lignin to liquid fuels with MoS2 derived oxygen-vacancy-enriched MoO3 in a hydrogen-donor solvent system

Bingyue Tang,Wenzhi Li,Xia Zhang,Baikai Zhang,Hao Zhang,Cunshuo Li

Depolymerization of Kraft lignin represents an attractive strategy to obtain alternatives to fossil fuels. In this work, via the controlled oxidation of MoS 2 precursor, an oxygen-vacancy-enriched MoO 3 was synthesized and employed to catalyze the depolymerization of Kraft lignin in a new solvent system without external H 2 gas. Systematic characterizations exemplified that the calcination temperature significantly affected the morphology and concentration of oxygen vacancy of prepared MoO 3 , and the appropriate temperature in this work was proved to be 350 °C. In the optimized hydrogen-donor solvent system that contained 20 mL 1, 4-dioxane, 20 mL isopropanol and 5 mL methanol, MoO 3 -350 catalyst gave a 87 wt% yield of petroleum ether soluble products, and the higher heating value (HHV) of liquid fuels (33.4 MJ/kg) was dramatically increased compared with the original Kraft lignin (25.23 MJ/kg). Methanol and isopropanol were analyzed to be capable of promoting the solubility of Kraft lignin and supplying hydrogen in the reaction system, respectively. Underpinned by characterizations and products analysis, the schematic representation of possible reaction pathway was given.

Differential effects of MoO3 and MoO2 sacrificial layers on the J–V performance of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 solar cells

Jinhui Zhang,Chuanhe Ma,Haixuan Gao,Jinchun Jiang,Hailong Wang

An over-thick MoSe2 layer and numerous voids at the absorbing layer inside and backside lead to a relatively low Jsc and PCE of CZTSSe solar cells. In previous studies, MoO2 and MoO3 sacrificial layers have been commonly used to eliminate those voids and reduce the thickness of MoSe2 layers. However, there is still no clarity about which one is more effective. In this work, we prepared MoO2 and MoO3 sacrificial layers on the surface of Mo-coated SLG substrates by air annealing and ammonia (NH3·H2O) etching, respectively. J–V testing shows that both MoO2 and MoO3 can effectively improve the Jsc and PCE of CZTSSe solar cells, wherein MoO3 is more effective. Comparative analysis shows that the electrical mechanism of Jsc and PCE improvement lies in the significant reduction of device series resistance (Rs). SEM images and XRD pattern results indicate that the reason for Rs decreasing is void elimination and MoSe2 layer thickness reduction from 600 nm to 270 nm after applying MoO3. With the aid of the MoO3 sacrificial layer, the PCE of the CZTSSe device increases from 7.51% to 9.58% (total area 0.21 cm2) without the MgF2 anti-reflection layer.

Dual-plasma enhanced 2D/2D/2D g-C3N4/Pd/MoO3-x S-scheme heterojunction for high-selectivity photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Huijie Wang,Qi Liu,Mengyang Xu,Chenlong Yan,Xianghai Song,Xin Liu,Huiqin Wang,Weiqiang Zhou,Pengwei Huo

The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect has shown significant progress in enhancing the efficiency of light absorption and separating photogenerated carriers. Herein, the dual-plasma enhanced 2D/2D/2D g-C 3 N 4 /Pd/MoO 3-x (CPM) S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized using the method of hydrothermal and electrostatic self-assembly for high-selectivity photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to produce CO. The dual LSPR effect of MoO 3-x and ultrathin Pd nanosheets synergistically broadened the optical response range of the CPM composites and successfully improved the photocatalytic activity and near-infrared (NIR) performance. The optimized CPM-30 photocatalysts exhibited CO yields of 18.55 μmol g −1 with a selectivity of 96.3%. In addition, the CO yield reached 3.92 μmol g −1 after 4 h of NIR light photoirradiation. The electron spin resonance (ESR) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) tests showed that the S-scheme heterojunctions were constructed by coupling g-C 3 N 4 /Pd nanosheets and MoO 3-x . This work will provide a reference for improving product selectivity through the design of two-dimensional composites and the utilization of plasma materials.

Construction of MoS2 nanoarrays and MoO3 nanobelts: Two efficient adsorbents for removal of Pb(II), Au(III) and Methylene Blue

Wen Zhou,Jiale Deng,Zhen Qin,Ruihua Huang,Yi Wang,Shanshan Tong

Toxic heavy metal ions, valuable noble metal ions and organic dyes are significant concerns in wastewater treatment. In this work, MoO 3 nanobelts (MoO 3 NBs) prepared by solvothermal method and MoS 2 nanoarrays (MoS 2 NAs) constructed using MoO 3 NBs precursor were proposed to effectively remove heavy/noble metal ions and organic dyes, such as Pb (II) , Au (III) and Methylene Blue (MB). The two adsorbents exhibited the excellent adsorption capacity towards Pb (II) , Au (III) and MB. The maximum removal capacity of Pb (II) and MB on MoO 3 NBs was 684.93 mg/g and 1408 mg/g, respectively, whereas that of Au (III) and MB on MoS 2 NAs was 1280.2 mg/g and 768 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters were calculated from the temperature-dependent curves, suggesting that the removal of Pb (II) and Au (III) on both adsorbents was spontaneous and endothermic. The new adsorbents introduced here were high adsorption activity, ease of fabrication, high scalability, good chemical stability, great repeatability and abundant and cheap supply, which were highly attractive for wastewater treatment.

One-pot synthesis of PEGylated plasmonic MoO3–x hollow nanospheres for photoacoustic imaging guided chemo-photothermal combinational therapy of cancer

Tao Bao,Wenyan Yin,Xiaopeng Zheng,Xiao Zhang,Jie Yu,Xinghua Dong,Yuan Yong,Fuping Gao,Liang Yan,Zhanjun Gu,Yuliang Zhao

Engineering design of plasmonic nanomaterials as on-demand theranostic nanoagents with imaging, drug carrier, and photothermal therapy (PTT) functions have profound impact on treatment of cancer. Here, a facile ‘one-pot’ template-free hydrothermal route was firstly developed for synthesis of plasmonic oxygen deficiency molybdenum oxide hollow nanospheres functionalized by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-MoO 3–x HNSs). The as-prepared PEG-MoO 3–x HNSs not only have good biocompatibility but also exhibit obvious localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region. Especially, due to its intrinsic mesoporous properties and effective photothermal conversion efficiency upon 808-nm NIR laser irradiation, the PEG-MoO 3–x HNSs can be applied as a pH/NIR laser dual-responsive camptothecin (CPT) drug delivery nanoplatform for chemotherapy as well as PTT to cancer cells. A remarkably improved synergistic therapeutic effect to pancreatic (PANC-1) tumor-bearing mice was obtained compared to the result of chemotherapy or PTT alone. Apart from its application for drug delivery, the PEG-MoO 3–x HNSs can also be employed as an effective contrast nanoagent for photoacoustic (PAT) imaging because of its high NIR absorption , making it promising as a theranostic nanoagent for PAT imaging-guided chemo-photothermal combinational cancer therapy in the nanomedicine field.

Aim and shoot: molecule-imprinting polymer coated MoO3 for selective SERS detection and photocatalytic destruction of low-level organic contaminants

Lingzhi Wang,Yin Xu,Xianjun Tan,Sen Tapas,Jinlong Zhang

A sensitive and selective SERS sensor with easy and excellent recyclability is highly demanded because of its great potential application in complex detection environments. Here, using methylene blue (MB) as a model target, a semiconductor-based SERS substrate composed of a MoO3 nanorod core and a uniform molecule-imprinting polymethacrylic acid shell (MIP) with a thickness of 4 nm was designed and fabricated (MoO3@MIP) to achieve selective detection. The key to the successful coating of the ultrathin uniform MIP shell lies in the pretreatment of a MoO3 core with nitric acid, providing sufficient surficial hydroxyls for the anchoring of a polymer precursor. The molecule-imprinted voids for MB were formed simply via light irradiation as a result of photocatalytic degradation by a MoO3 semiconductor. This core–shell MIP composite shows a high SERS selectivity towards low-level MB in a mixed MB/CV solution. The enhanced factor (EF) is high, at 1.6 × 104. More importantly, the selective detection allows the further photocatalytic recycling of MoO3@MIP in an “aim-and-shoot” way, which well preserves the detection selectivity and sensitivity towards MB at least for 4 cycles. Based on decreased sensitivity with the increasing shell thickness (10–24 nm), a MIP-gating charge transfer mechanism is proposed to demonstrate the high EF instead of the molecule-enrichment effect. This “aim-and-shoot” strategy is expected to push forward the prosperous application of selective SERS for trace detection in versatile environments.

Oriented MoS2 Nanoflakes on N-Doped Carbon Nanosheets Derived from Dodecylamine-Intercalated MoO3 for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anodes

Zhenhua Liao,Qingwei Li,Jiabao Zhang,Juan Xu,Biao Gao,Paul K. Chu,Kaifu Huo

Graphical Stand up straight : Vertically oriented MoS 2 nanoflakes on N-doped carbon nanosheets (MoS 2 /NC) are produced, which serve as the large-capacity, high-rate, and long-life anodes for lithium-ion batteries. The MoS 2 /NC electrode shows excellent cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 722 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after 100 cycles as well as a rate performance of 554 mAh g −1 at 2000 mA g −1 . MoS 2 is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its layered structure, analogous to that of graphite, and high lithium storage capacity of 670 mAh g −1 . However, its practical implementation in LIBs is hindered by poor conductivity, large volume change, and possible polysulfide shuttling during cycling. In this work, oriented MoS 2 nanoflakes grown on N-doped carbon nanosheets (MoS 2 /NC) are investigated as high-performance anodes in LIBs. The materials are prepared by annealing dodecylamine-intercalated MoO 3 nanosheets under Ar at 400 °C, followed by a hydrothermal treatment in the thiourea (CH 4 N 2 S) solution at 220 °C for 30 h. In the MoS 2 /NC structure, the NC nanosheets constitute a long-range conductive network for fast electron transfer, whereas the oriented MoS 2 nanoflakes provide sufficient active sites for Li + storage and fast Li + diffusion along the a – b plane. Consequently, the MoS 2 /NC electrode shows a remarkable capacity of 803 mAh g −1 at a current density of 100 mA g −1 , a high rate capability of 554 mAh g −1 at 2000 mA g −1 , and excellent cycle stability. Our results reveal a facile and general method to produce high-performance heterostructured MoS 2 /NC anodes and the process can be extended to other metal dichalcogenides for future high-performance LIBs.

Evidence of the (110), (040), and (021) Plane Tuning in the MoO3 Crystal Structure via Facile Rapid Vapor Synthesis in Air

Bala Ismail Adamu,Shafia Mukhtar Ibrahim,Mukhtar Lawan Adam,Adamu Ismail Adamu,Ibrahim Murtala Musa,Peipei Chen,Mokhotjwa Simon Dhlamini,Weiguo Chu,Lingxiang Jiang

The (110), (040), and (021) planes of α-MoO3 are commonly observed in X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns between 2θ = 20° and 30°, exhibiting varying relative amplitudes under different synthesis techniques. Although prior studies have noted these variations, their specific impact on structural properties remains unexplored. This study investigates how the relative amplitude of the (110), (040), and (021) is modulated via the modified rapid vapor synthesis of α-MoO3 in air, influencing morphological and structural properties. XRD analysis revealed an 18-fold enhancement in the amplitude of the (040) upon annealing at 750 °C, annihilating the (110) and (021) planes. Therefore, the (110), (040), and (021) amplitude tuning characteristics can be categorized as (i) tensile strain (T ≤ 600 °C) and (ii) compressive strain (T ≥ 650 °C), driven by lattice volume expansion (oxygen loss) and lattice oxygen replenishment, respectively. Overall, elevated temperatures drive systematic exponential decay and growth in the valence band (EVB = 1.95 to 1.83 eV, 1.82–1.72 eV) and conduction band (ECB −1.15 to −1.03 eV, −1.02 to −0.92 eV), corroborating the red-shift in both the direct and indirect band gaps. MoO3@500 °C exhibited superior optical stability and sensing capability in aqueous acetone and ethanol. Upon exposure to acetone, the optical peak intensity increased and shifted from 295 to 299 nm, while ethanol quenched both absorption peaks. This work provides novel insights into crystallographic control for advanced applications and complements the existing understanding of MoO3.

Enhancement in Energy Release and Combustion Efficiency of Solid Propellants by Incorporation of MoO3–x Quantum Dots into Al@AP Composites

Xin Li,Yunlong Zhang,Ruixuan Xu,Qi-Long Yan,Hongqi Nie

The synergistic regulation of high energy output and low sensitivity has been a persistent research focus in solid propellant development. In this study, oxygen-deficient MoO3–x quantum dots (QDs)-modified Al@AP core–shell composites were fabricated via spray-drying, with a reference system containing fine AP (s-AP) serving as a control group. Systematic investigations were conducted on the interfacial modification effects and the incorporation of MoO3–x QDs on the energy release characteristics, ignition-combustion performance, and safety properties of HTPB-based composite propellants. The results indicate that SP4 with Al@AP/MoO3–x has significantly enhanced energy outputs compared with SP1 containing Al/AP, and the heat of reaction increased from 6270 to 6615 J·g–1 under identical loading densities. Meanwhile, the ignition delay time of SP4 was shortened from 25.76 to 16.38 ms, and the flame radiation intensity was increased from 1640.8 to 1944.2, indicating a significantly improved ignition property. Furthermore, the higher burning rate at low pressure and suppressed rate surges at high pressure of SP4 result in a reduced burning rate pressure exponent (from 0.57 to 0.39). Safety tests revealed lower impact sensitivity for Al@AP/MoO3–x versus Al/AP/s-AP systems based on the increased burning rate. Condensed combustion product (CCP) analyses demonstrated that the core–shell structure effectively mitigated Al agglomeration, evidenced by increased fine particles and decreased Al residues, indicating an enhanced combustion efficiency. MoO3–x QDs further optimized the CCP size distribution, reducing the dominant particle size from 44.7 to 22.3 μm.

Oxygen-vacancy-enriched MoO3 quantum dots anchored on sulfur-vacancy-rich Zn3In2S6 heterostructures for boosted hydrogen peroxide photosynthesis from pure water

Cheng-Jie Zheng,Ting Wang,Ren-Chang Zhang,Ke Xu,Zhi-Cai He,Jian Zhang,Guo-Bo Huang,Mingyuan Wang,Guiwu Liu,Wei Chen

The development of efficient photocatalytic systems for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production from pure water remains a huge challenge due to rapid charge recombination and insufficient redox capability in single-component photocatalysts. Herein, we successfully constructed the S-scheme oxygen-vacancy-enriched MoO 3 quantum dots (Ov-MoQDs)/sulfur-vacancy-rich Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (Sv-ZIS) heterostructures by coupling Sv-ZIS nanosheets with Ov-MoQDs. The optimized 3Ov-MoQDs/Sv-ZIS sample achieves an outstanding H 2 O 2 production rate of 85.8 ± 3.1 μM under visible light illumination for 1 h in the pure water, which is about 3.5 and 45.1 times higher than those of Sv-ZIS and Ov-MoQDs, respectively. Through comprehensive in situ and ex situ characterizations combined with theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that the enhanced activity stems from efficient charge separation and transfer across the heterogeneous interfaces via an S-scheme mechanism. Furthermore, the H 2 O 2 photosynthesis over Ov-MoQDs/Sv-ZIS heterostructures is found to proceed through a two-step single-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway. This work provides valuable insights into the rational design of advanced heterostructured photocatalysts for sustainable chemical synthesis.

Laser assisted self-assembly synthesis of porous hollow MoO3-x-doped MoS2 nanospheres sandwiched by graphene for flexible high-areal supercapacitors

Wei Li,Ting Luo,Chao Yang,Xiaopeng Yang,Shuhua Yang,Bingqiang Cao

Molybdenum disulphide (MoS 2 ) with two-dimensional (2D) “graphene-like” stacked structure has attracted widespread attention as a type of novel energy storage materials because of its unique electronic properties. However, it suffers from fast capacity fading, low cycling stability and low specific capacitance for flexible devices. This study describes a facile and novel laser irradiation approach to fabricate self-assembled porous hollow MoO 3-x -doped MoS 2 nanospheres sandwiched by graphene for binder-free flexible supercapacitors (SCs). Due to the one-step laser-induced fragmentation and self-assembly of MoS 2 nanoflakes with the photothermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO), the MoO 3-x -doped MoS 2 /graphene nanocomposites show enhanced conductivity, high surface area and increased electrochemical active sites for redox reactions . The symmetric flexible SCs deliver remarkable areal specific capacitance of 121.88 mF cm −2 under a current density of 0.6 mA cm −2 , excellent cycle performance of almost no loss after 4000 cycles and high energy density of 73.4 μWh cm −2 under a power density of 240 μW cm −2 . This simple and ultra-fast laser-induced self-assembly technique could open up a new avenue towards high-performance flexible energy storage.
