Annealing atmosphere-mediated N-doped In2O3 homojunctions toward synergistic enhancement of NO2 gas sensing via oxygen vacancy engineering

Yuhang Du,Mengmeng Xie,Qingrui Hao,Xiuze Li,Zhaohui Liu,Hongyan Xu

In this work, In 2 O 3 nanosheets were fabricated on the surface of Al 2 O 3 ceramic tubes via an in-situ synthesis approach. The effects of three annealing atmospheres (O 2 , air, and N 2 ) on their micro-morphologies and gas-sensing properties were systematically investigated. The gas-sensing test results demonstrate that the In 2 O 3 nanosheet sensor annealed in N 2 atmosphere exhibits the optimal sensing performance towards 50 ppm NO 2 . At an operating temperature of 160 °C, its response value reaches 241.8, which is 4 times that of the sample annealed in oxygen and 1.5 times that of the sample annealed in air, respectively. Meanwhile, this sensor also exhibits a rapid response time of 15 s, along with excellent selectivity and repeatability. Combined characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that nitrogen atmosphere annealing enables In 2 O 3 nanosheets to generate abundant oxygen vacancies (with a content of 44.67%), while simultaneously facilitating the formation of homojunctions and N-doping. These defect structures can significantly enhance the adsorption energy between NO 2 and In 2 O 3 as well as the charge transfer efficiency, thereby achieving the optimization of gas-sensing performance.

High-Performance NO2 Gas Sensing via W6+-Doped ZnO Ultrathin Nanosheets through Morphological Control and Oxygen-Vacancy Synergy

Yang Liu,Yuanchao Xie,Yanjiao Dai,Jiayao Li,Maosen Hu,Hongtao Wang,Dan Han,Jianan Ma,Shengbo Sang

Doping with transition metal ions is an effective way to significantly enhance the performance of MOS-based gas sensors. Conventional doping strategies often lack control over morphological evolution and fail to elucidate the complex interactions between dopants and intrinsic defects. Herein, we demonstrated a rational defect-engineering approach by introducing W 6+ dopants into morphology-prefabricated layered ZnO hexagonal prisms, which triggered a controlled transformation into ultrathin nanosheets (15-20 nm thickness) while systematically changing oxygen vacancy and zinc vacancy concentrations. The concentration changes of intrinsic defect, as well as the formation energy, were confirmed through various characterization methods and DFT calculations. The gas sensitivity test results showed that the response has been significantly enhanced after doping W 6+ , which can reach 64 to 1 ppm of NO 2 , and the detection limit was as low as 200 ppb. At the same time, it has excellent stability and selectivity. Finally, the gas-sensing mechanism thoroughly explored the charge balance process caused by W 6+ doping, the functions of oxygen vacancy and zinc vacancy, and the NO 2 sensitization mechanism.

Double target co-sputtering preparation of Sb doped GaN film for room temperature detection of NO2 in darkness

Diancheng Zhu,Linyan Gu,Wenxi Zhang,Miao Cheng,Tao Wei,Qianqian Liu,Ruirui Wang,Wanfei Li,Ming Li,Bo Liu,Jing Hu

In this work, we present a room temperature (RT, 25 ± 3 °C) nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sensor based on antimony doped gallium nitride (Sb-GaN) thin film, fabricated using a multi-target co-sputtering method with a physical vapor deposition (PVD). The effects of Sb incorporation and sputtering power on gas-sensitive properties of the fabricated sensor were investigated. Intriguingly, the optimized Sb-GaN thin film demonstrated a substantial response ( S = 5.8) to 10 ppm NO 2 gas at 25 °C in darkness, with response/recovery times of 185/750 s and a detection limit (DL) as low as 1.64 ppb. Additionally, the sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, reproducibility and good stability in high humidity environment. The XPS study showed that the sensor’s stability deteriorates in 10 days due to the residual adsorption of oxygen ions on the film’s surface. In addition, the sensor’s response-recovery characteristics under six different light irradiations were compared, and red light was found to significantly accelerate the recovery process of the device. The sensing enhancement (4.5 times) of the Sb-GaN sensor is ascribed to the structure induced by Sb-doping and the augmented active sites. Importantly, these investigations offer a valuable reference for synthesis of reliable, eco-friendly, and energy-efficient sensing materials for gas detection in darkness.

The Nitro-Modified NO2-MIL-53(Fe) Activating Persulfate for the Efficient Degradation of Tetracycline: Performance and Mechanism

Bai Yizhuo,Zhang Shiyu,Zhang Kaifan,Li Jiali,Zhang Jiehe,Hao Mingxu,Tao Haisheng

Nitro-functionalized NO 2 -MIL-53(Fe) was synthesized by modifying MIL-53(Fe) to enhance persulfate activation for the degradation of tetracycline (TCN). Comparative studies with NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe) and pristine MIL-53(Fe), it was found that NO 2 -MIL-53(Fe) is categorized as an ideal type I isotherm, without observable hysteresis loop. The introduction of nitro-group incorporation significantly increased specific surface area clocking in at 298.3 m 2 /g and an average pore diameter of 3.3 nm, created uniform micropores, and improved adsorption capacity. Structural characterization confirmed Fe(II) generation and electron transfer in NO 2 -MIL-53(Fe), enabling 82.1% TCN removal within 30 min. Radical (SO 4 ·− , ·OH, O 2 ·⁻ ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 , charge transfer) pathways synergistically drove degradation, as evidenced by quenching experiments and EPR analysis. ESI-Q-TOF MS identified key intermediates, proposing plausible TCN degradation pathways. This study highlights the potential of nitro-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in advanced oxidation processes, emphasizing their enhanced catalytic activity and performance mechanisms, and provides new ideas for the remediation of pollutants in water bodies. Heteroatoms-doped Transition Metal Dichalcogenides Confined in Mesoporous Nitrogen-doped Carbon Microspheres With Radial Pores for NO2 Sensing

Rui Ma,Yuan Ren,Zhenliang Li,Yujian Rao,Xueqiong Cui,Tuo Zhang,Zejun Han,Qiongfeng Shi,Yonghui Deng,Li Tao

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted significant attention in electronic devices, energy storage, and catalysis owing to their distinctive electronic properties and abundant active sites. Introducing mesoporosity into TMDs is extremely favorable to enhance the host-guest interactions and improve their performance, but very challenging. Herein, we report a universal electrostatic assembly strategy for the synthesis of mesoporous carbon/heteroatom-doped TMDs microspheres with radially oriented pores, using polydopamine (PDA) and polyoxometalates (POMs) clusters as interactive precursors. By employing POMs (e.g., H 3 PW 12 O 40 ) as metal sources and mesoporous PDA microspheres as templates, we successfully synthesized a series of mesoporous C/heteroatom-doped TMDs microspheres (TMDs = P-WS 2 , Si-WS 2 , P-MoS 2 , Si-MoS 2 ). The resulting hybrid microspheres feature an open porous architecture, high charge-carrier mobility, and abundant active sites, benefiting from their high crystallinity and in situ heteroatom doping. When employed in chemiresistive gas sensors, these C/TMDs microspheres demonstrate exceptional room-temperature NO 2 sensing performance, including high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and rapid response. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that heteroatom doping (e.g., P) can enhance the structural stability of adsorbed NO 2 , strengthen orbital hybridization with TMDs, and facilitate efficient charge transfer, thereby dramatically improving sensing performances.

Effect of water vapor on NH3–NO/NO2 SCR performance of fresh and aged MnOx–NbOx–CeO2 catalysts

Lei Chen,Zhichun Si,Xiaodong Wu,Duan Weng,Zhenwei Wu

A MnO x –NbO x –CeO 2 catalyst for low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x with NH 3 was prepared by a sol–gel method, and characterized by NH 3 –NO/NO 2 SCR catalytic activity , NO/NH 3 oxidation activity, NO x /NH 3 TPD , XRD , BET, H 2 -TPR and in-situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results indicate that the MnO x –NbO x –CeO 2 catalyst shows excellent low temperature NH 3 -SCR activity in the temperature range of 150–300°C. Water vapor inhibits the low temperature activity of the catalyst in standard SCR due to the inhibition of NO x adsorption. As the NO 2 content increases in the feed, water vapor does not affect the activity in NO 2 SCR. Meanwhile, water vapor significantly enhances the N 2 selectivity of the fresh and the aged catalysts due to its inhibition of the decomposition of NH 4 NO 3 into N 2 O.

Highly-improved room-temperature ppb-level NO2 gas sensors with oxygen vacancy-dominated In2O3/SnO2 n-n heterojunctions

Zihan Lei,Zijun Lu,Bo Hong,Xi Chen,Rongkang Yang,Mingming Wei,Shi Qiu,Xinqing Wang

Porous tremella-like In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 microspheres possess abundant oxygen vacancies. • In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterojunction narrows bandgap and enhances interfacial charge transfer. • In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor shows ultra-sensitive ppb-level NO 2 detection performance at RT. • Superior RT NO 2 sensing performance stems from n-n heterojunction synergistic effects. • An intelligent sensing device based on the In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor was built. The growing demand for ultra-sensitive, power-efficient NO 2 sensors in wearable and portable electronics has driven intense research, yet achieving reliable ppb-level detection at room temperature (RT) remains a major unresolved challenge. The In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor overcomes this limitation through multiple synergistic effects arising from n-n heterojunction construction. The In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterojunction features a hierarchically porous morphology with larger specific surface area, enriched oxygen species and reduced E g . The In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor displays outstanding NO 2 sensing performance with a response of 2209.77 toward 4 ppm NO 2 at RT, which is 250.82 times greater than that of the pristine In 2 O 3 sensor (8.81). More remarkably, the sensor realized an ultra-low theoretical limit of detection of 0.03 ppb, while still retaining a high response of 59.52 exposed to 500 ppb NO 2 . Moreover, the sensor demonstrated fast response/recovery kinetics, excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and remarkable humidity resistance. The superior performance is attributed to the multiple synergistic effects on morphological reconfiguration, bandgap narrowing, oxygen species enrichment, and vacancy-dominated unconventional charge transfer. An intelligent sensing device based on the In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor was built with an innovative humidity compensation-based alarm logic, effectively reducing false alarms caused by humidity. This work provides new insights for the rational design of high-performance RT NO 2 sensors for practical applications. Download: Download high-res image (212KB) Download: Download full-size image

Ppb-level fuel cell type NO2 sensor based on Nafion proton membrane and Au-Ni/CF sensitive electrode

Sitong Feng,Lingchu Huang,Qi Lu,Tong Wang,Rui Han,Xiaoyong Sun,Xishuang Liang,Fengmin Liu,Fangmeng Liu,Geyu Lu

The fuel cell type gas sensor has attracted wide attention due to its advantages of operating at room temperature, low power consumption and good stability. In this study, a new sensitive electrode material Au-Ni/CF was developed for the detection of NO 2 . Through XRD , SEM and TEM characterization, it has been demonstrated that the electrode material exhibits improved crystallinity after being sintered at high temperatures. This leads to a reduction in charge transfer impedance. Additionally, XPS testing and TEM characterization have confirmed that high temperature sintering results in the reduction of more metal elements, leading to an increase in the electrochemical surface area and effectively improving sensor sensitivity. Furthermore, adjusting the mass ratio of gold to nickel can alter the surface lattice arrangement and electronic structure of the electrode material, subsequently impacting its resistance and catalytic ability towards NO 2 , ultimately enhancing sensor sensitivity. The sensitivity of the sensor using Au 5 Ni 2 /CF as the electrode material for detecting 0.05–10 ppm NO 2 was found to be 47.88 nA/ppm with response and recovery times of 35 s and 25 s respectively when exposed to 2 ppm NO 2 . Furthermore, it exhibited good selectivity and stability, indicating promising potential for application in room temperature atmospheric environment monitoring.

Formation processes of nitrogen-containing organic compounds from heterogeneous reactions of C3H6/NO2/O3 with α-Fe2O3 particles

Xi Xi,Xiang He,Zhi-Cheng Ma,Hui-Qing Ma,Peng-Cheng Liao

Formation processes of nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) are important from heterogeneous reactions between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and mineral oxides under various environmental factors. In this study, reaction processes of C 3 H 6 /O 3 /NO 2 with α-Fe 2 O 3 particles were studied by using a gas-flow system with diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results show that the appearance of R–ONO 2 bands at ∼1648 and 1286 cm −1 represents the formation of NOCs. In the dark condition, the presence of O 3 leads to the rapid formation of nitrate radical (NO 3 ) which can react with C 3 H 6 to form NOCs on particle surface. Under the simulated sunlight irradiation, the α-Fe 2 O 3 can be excited to produce additional hydroxyl which promotes the formation of RO 2 . Meanwhile, formed NO from the photolysis of NO 2 can react with RO 2 to produce more NOCs. Moreover, the presence of water vapor plays a negative role in the NOCs formation processes. The value of uptake coefficient for the NO 2 in the initial stage at 0% relative humidity (RH) is about 10 times higher than that at 76.3% RH during the heterogeneous reactions. The R–ONO 2 group hydrolyzes to nitric acid and R–OH under the humid condition. Our results lay the foundation on the effects of light irradiation and RH for the converting VOCs into NOCs on mineral dust and help to understand the formation processes of NOCs under combined atmospheric environment.

Hybrid 1D/3D-Structured Perovskite as a Highly Selective and Stable Sensor for NO2 Detection at Room Temperature

Anqi Cheng,Jinru Zhao,Xi-Ao Wang,Zhen Lu,Yan Qi,Jiankun Sun

To exploit high-performance and stable sensing materials with a room working temperature is pivotal for portable and mobile sensor devices. However, the common sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors usually need a higher working temperature (usually above 300 °C) to achieve a good response toward gas detection. Currently, metal halide perovskites have begun to rise as a promising candidate for gas monitoring at room temperature but suffer phase instability. Herein, we construct 1D/3D PyPbI3/FA0.83Cs0.17PbI3(denoted by PyPbI3/FACs) bilayer perovskite by post-processing spin-coating Pyrrolidinium hydroiodide (PyI) salt on top of 3D FACs film. Benefitting from the 1D PyPbI3coating layer, the phase stability of 1D/3D PyPbI3/FACs significantly improves. Simultaneously, the gas sensor based on the 1D/3D PyPbI3/FACs bilayer perovskite presents a superior selectivity and sensitivity toward NO2detection at room temperature, with a low detection limit of 220 ppb. Exposed to a 50 ± 3% relative humidity (RH) level environment for a consecutive six days, the 1D/3D PyPbI3/FACs perovskite-based sensor toward 10 ppm NO2can still maintain a rapid response with a slight attenuation. Gas sensors based on hybrid 1D/3D-structured perovskite in this work may provide a new pathway for highly sensitive and stable gas sensors in room working temperature, accelerating its practical application and portable device. Keywords:gas sensor;NO2detection;1D/3D hybrid-structured perovskite;room temperature;stability

UV-activated CuO nanospheres modified with rGO nanosheets for ppb-level detection of NO2 gas at room temperature

Haineng Bai,Cheng Feng,Hui Guo,Xiaoli Li,Weifeng Liu,Yamin Feng,Kuili Liu,Dunjun Chen,Youdou Zheng,Fuqiang Guo

Monitoring and reducing NO 2 pollution at room temperature is indispensable for human survival. Thus, we propose a light-activated route (UV light, 100 mW/cm 2 ) to realize a high-performance NO 2 detection based on CuO/rGO gas sensor. The CuO/rGO sensor under UV light illumination exhibits a high response of 22.18–100 ppm NO 2 at 23 ℃, which is approximately 1.36 times of the CuO/rGO sensor and 2.31 times of the CuO sensor under dark, respectively. Meanwhile, under UV light illumination, the CuO/rGO sensor has a fast response/recovery speed of 10.9/30.9 s to 20 ppm NO 2 at 23 ℃, which is obviously better than that under dark. Moreover, the light-activated CuO/rGO sensor has excellent repeatability, selectivity, ultra-low detection limit (50 ppb) and long-term stability. The significantly appealing gas-sensing performance of CuO/rGO sensor is mainly ascribed to the mesoporous structure, high specific surface area and plentiful oxygen vacancy of CuO/rGO nanocomposites . More attractively, the photo-generated carriers and formed heterojunction also greatly improve the carrier migration in the context of the NO 2 /CuO/rGO interaction, enhancing the gas-sensing performance of gas sensor. Our work will provide insight in utilizing light illumination to realize ultrasensitive and room-temperature detection of ppb-level NO 2 gas.

One-step green synthesis of Cu2O/CuO@rGO composites for ppt level detection of NO2 at room temperature

Jinjuan Li,Jing Hu,Nan Li,Miao Cheng,Tao Wei,Qianqian Liu,Ruirui Wang,Wanfei Li,Yun Ling,Yafei Zhang,Bo Liu

Conventional metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors often suffer from high operating temperatures, low selectivity, and complex synthesis processes for NO2 detection. In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets are coated on NaOH-etched Cu2O/CuO urchin-like spheres to form Cu2O/CuO@rGO composites via a one-step green synthesis method at room temperature (RT). The gas sensor based on this material has been utilized for detecting NO2 at RT (25 °C), and the effects of Cu2O addition and reaction time on the morphology as well as gas-sensing properties of the as-prepared sensor are investigated. Of interest, the sensor based on the 550Cu2O/CuO@rGO-5 composite has an ultra-high response (S = 871) to 5 ppm NO2 gas at RT with a response/recovery time of 32/73 s, and the detection limit is as low as 90.6 ppt. In addition, the gas sensor shows excellent selectivity and repeatability. The excellent sensing performance of the as-prepared 550Cu2O/CuO@rGO sensor is attributed to the framework structure of Cu2O/CuO@rGO, the urchin-like hierarchical structure of the Cu2O/CuO and the synergistic effect of the p–p (Cu2O–CuO) heterojunction. This exploration of the present work offers a good reference for mass, green, and low-power sensing material preparation.
