For the first time, novel multifunctional superparamagnetic PANI–Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO core–shell composite photocatalysts with different PANI: ZnO ratios were synthesized by Pickering emulsion route in one step in the presence of ZnO nanoparticles. PANI–Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO core–shell microspheres consist of PANI core which embedded with Fe 3 O 4 -OA (oleic acid modified Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles and tunable ZnO shell thickness. The resulting samples were thoroughly studied by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The catalytic activity of the as-prepared PANI–Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO core–shell microspheres is investigated by the degradation of MB under visible light irradiation. As expected, the as prepared PANI–Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO photocatalysts exhibit highly enhanced photocatalytic activities in the degradation of MB under visible light irradiation owing to fast separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. Significantly, the PANI–Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO catalysts can be separated from the reaction media by applying an external magnet, and can be reused for seven cycles without change in stability and degradation efficiency.

With the aid of polyaniline (PANI), multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were vertically arrayed on electrode surface by Langmuir–Blodgett technology, which was a novel preparation strategy of vertically aligned MWCNTs modified electrode . The proposed method was applied to design a sensitive voltammetric sensor for the determination of daidzein . Compared to the randomly dispersed MWCNTs modified electrode, a lower detection limit (8 × 10 −8 mol L −1 ) and wider linear range (1.0 × 10 −7 –9.0 × 10 −6 mol L −1 ) were achieved by the proposed sensor. The results indicated that the aligned morphology of MWCNTs could effectively facilitate the transportation of electrons and electrolyte ions .

With the continuous advancement of electronic devices, flexible thin films with both thermal management functions and excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties have received much attention. Hence, inspired by Janus, a CNF/MXene/ZnFe 2 O 4 @PANI composite film with an asymmetric gradient alternating structure was successfully prepared by adjusting the filler content of the conductive and magnetic layers using a vacuum-assisted filtration method. Benefiting from the magnetic resonance and hysteresis loss of ZnFe 2 O 4 @PANI, conductive loss and dipole polarization of MXene, as well as the exclusive “absorption-reflection-reabsorption” shielding feature in the alternating multilayered films, CM&CZFP-4G film has superior EMI shielding performance, with an EMI SE of up to 45.75 dB and shielding effectiveness of 99.99%. Surprisingly, the composite film maintains reliable EMI shielding properties even after prolonged erosion in harsh environments such as high/low temperatures, high humidity, acids and alkalis. Furthermore, the CM&CZFP-4G responded quickly within about 50 s and reached a maximum steady-state temperature of 235.8 °C at an applied voltage of 9.0 V, indicating the obtained film acquired outstanding and controllable Joule heating performance. This result was attributed to the homogeneous dispersion of MXene to build up a conductive network and endow the CNF/MXene with high conductivity. Meanwhile, the fire resistance of CM&CZFP-4G was significantly improved compared to pure CNF, which guaranteed fire safety during its application. Additionally, contributed by long fiber entanglement of CNF, extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions and multilayer structural design, the CM&CZFP-4G film exhibits excellent mechanical characteristics, with the tensile strength and fracture strain of 27.74 MPa and 6.21%, separately. This work offers a creative avenue to prepare multifunctional composite films with electromagnetic shielding and Joule heating for various application environments.

Solar-driven interfacial steam generation (SDIE) system has emerged as an innovative technology for fresh water production, especially in desalination. Therefore, efficient, reusable, and environmentally sustainable SDIE evaporators are being developed. In this study, a novel multi-layer interfacial evaporator was constructed by combining a polyaniline-modified (PANI-modified) membrane, a loofah sponge, and foam. In this system, the PANI-modified membrane, acting as a photothermal layer, was synthesized via in-situ polymerization on an electrospun nanofiber composite membrane composed of carbonized loofah (CL) powder and polyacrylonitrile (PAN), achieving higher efficiency for fresh water production. In addition, the loofah sponge served as a connecting layer due to its net-like structure, anchoring the upper photothermal layer to the lower foam supporting layer, thereby insulating them from each other. Finally, the support foam layer was formed in-situ with Polyamide 6 (PA6) doped with bamboo charcoal (BC) at the bottom of the connecting layer. The as obtained PA6-BC supporting layer provided functions such as structural support, heat insulation, and contaminant adsorption. This system achieved a deionized water evaporation rate of 1.799 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 sun illumination, and 1.675 kg m −2 h −1 in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Moreover, the system exhibited a high adsorption rate of methylene blue (MB) dye pollutant. The multi-layer interface evaporator also demonstrated excellent salt resistance and stability. These features showcase the novelty of the designed multi-layer interface evaporator and demonstrate the feasibility of applying a multi-layer interface evaporator in photothermal evaporation water treatment.

The efficient integration of photovoltaic conversion and energy storage technologies is critical to overcoming constraints in solar energy utilization. Solar rechargeable flow batteries (SRFBs) integrate solar energy conversion and storage via photoelectrode-driven redox processes, enabling economically viable pathways for sustainable solar energy storage. However, SRFB development faces limitations of thermodynamic voltage ceilings imposed by photoelectrode/redox couple energy level mismatches and the long-term durability of photoelectrodes. In this study, a PANI/BiVO 4 (PBVO) photoelectrode was fabricated, effectively preventing direct contact between BiVO 4 (BVO) and the electrolyte, thereby suppressing the photocorrosion issues. Meanwhile, [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3- /[Fe(CN) 6 ] 4- and Br - /Br 3- (Fe-Br) redox pairs with high redox reversibility were used in the SRFB system. The designed PBVO Fe-Br SRFB achieved ultra-long stability and a sustained photocurrent for up to 50 h. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the charge transfer pathway in the PBVO electrode within the Fe-Br SRFB was verified, providing insights into the design of SRFBs.

In answer to the need for materials that absorb electromagnetic waves with great efficiency, this study reports the design and synthesis of a core–shell structured GM@NiFe-LDH@PANI composite. The material exhibits outstanding electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance through multi-component synergy and multi-mechanism coupling. XRD and XPS analyses confirmed the material’s crystalline structure and chemical composition, while SEM images revealed the core–shell morphology, showing NiFe-LDH nanosheets uniformly anchored on glass microspheres (GM) surfaces, forming a hydrangea-like structure. Subsequent incorporation of polyaniline (PANI) further increased the heterojunction interface. Electromagnetic property measurements demonstrated that GNP-2 achieved optimal impedance matching at a thickness of 1.71 mm, resulting in a strong reflection loss of −52.86 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.72 GHz. The hydrangea-like NiFe-LDH structure enhances magnetic loss and promotes scattering and reflection through its porous framework, intensifying interfacial polarization effects. The conductive PANI shell, with its exposed active sites, facilitates EMW absorption through dipole polarization and conductive loss mechanisms. This core–shell porous design synergistically optimizes dielectric and magnetic losses. This composite material demonstrates considerable potential for electromagnetic compatibility applications in radar stealth, modern communication systems, and renewable energy devices.

In this work, we report a novel sandwich-type electrochemical aptasensor for sensitive and selective detection of antibiotic kanamycin. This aptasensor was constructed by assembling graphene–polyaniline (GR–PANI) and polyamidoamine dendrimer–Au nanoparticle (PAMAM–Au) nanocomposites on the surfaces of a glass carbon electrode, which as electrode materials exhibited excellent charge-transport property and loading capacity of biomolecules. Followed by the sandwich-type specific identification, kanamycin detection was realized by outputting a redox current from electro-reduction reaction of H2O2 catalyzed by HRP. It was demonstrated that the developed strategy had a wide linear response range from 5 × 10−6 to 4 × 10−2 μg mL−1 and a low detection limit of 4.6 × 10−6 μg mL−1. Additionally, this aptasensor had the advantages in its low cost, high sensitivity, and superb specificity. Thus, it might provide a useful tool for kanamycin determination and related food safety analysis and clinical diagnosis.

A new approach is employed to boost the electrochemical kinetics and stability of vanadium oxygen hydrate (VOH, V2O5·nH2O) employed for aqueous zinc-ion battery (ZIB) cathodes. The methodology is based on electrically conductive polyaniline (PANI) intercalated–exfoliated VOH, achieved by preintercalation of an aniline monomer and its in situ polymerization within the oxide interlayers. The resulting graphene-like PANI–VOH nanosheets possess a greatly boosted reaction-controlled contribution to the total charge storage capacity, resulting in more material undergoing the reversible V5+ to V3+ redox reaction. The PANI–VOH electrode obtains an impressive capacity of 323 mAh g–1 at 1 A g–1, and state-of-the-art cycling stability at 80% capacity retention after 800 cycles. Because of the facile redox kinetics, the PANI–VOH ZIB obtains uniquely promising specific energy–specific power combinations: an energy of 216 Wh kg–1 is achieved at 252 W kg–1, while 150 Wh kg–1 is achieved at 3900 W kg–1. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) analyses indicate that with PANI–VOH nanosheets, there is a simultaneous decrease in the charge transfer resistance and a boost in the diffusion coefficient of Zn2+ (by a factor of 10–100) vs the VOH baseline. The strategy of employing PANI for combined intercalation–exfoliation may provide a broadly applicable approach for improving the performance in a range of oxide-based energy storage materials.

Utilizing surface polarization to improve the separation efficiency of photoinduced carriers is considered to be an effective strategy to enhance the photocatalytic activity. Herein, a novel nonprecious metal-based P-doped g-C3N4 (PCN)/polyaniline (PANI)/BaTiO3 (BTO) (PPB) ternary photocatalyst with a hollow architecture was rationally designed and prepared by a combined wet-chemical and thermal treatment strategy. Except for the Z-scheme involved in PCN and PANI, the vertical polarization provided by ferroelectric BTO further improved the separation efficiency of the photoinduced charge carrier, resulting in an enhanced visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of 602 μmol h−1 g−1, which was 21-fold higher than that of pristine g-C3N4, and an apparent quantum efficiency of 4.16% at 420 nm. In addition, benefitting from this ternary heterojunction, the photoinduced electrons were concentrated on the intermediate p-type PANI while holes were left on the lateral n-type PCN involved in the Z-scheme, resulting in the retention of high oxidation–reduction potentials. Moreover, this approach to enhance the photocatalytic activity by constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction and surface polarization could expand to other photosystems, which provides a new avenue for the rational design and the synthesis of novel photocatalysts.

A hierarchical composite based on the modified reduced graphene oxide with platinum-nickel decorated polyaniline nano-spheres (rGO/PANI@PtNi) was facilely prepared via microwave-assisted self-reduction for an application in nonenzymatic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection. Compared to the pristine rGO, the composite exhibited a much tougher surface due to the stacking of conductive PANI nano-spheres on rGO sheets, leading to good dispersion of PtNi nanoparticles and a large active area. Furthermore, the multi-valance Ni2+/3+in the PtNi particles effectively promoted the catalytic property of Pt sites and facilitated a superior electrochemical performance of PtNi alloy than that of neat Pt. Owing to the synergistic effect of the improved electrical conductivity and the promoted electrocatalytical property, the modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with rGO/PANI@PtNi nanocomposite displayed an outstanding electrochemical sensitivity towards H2O2with a fast response time (<2 s), a wide linear range (0.1–126.4 mM), a low detection limit (0.5 µM), as well as a long-life stability for one week without obvious degradation. This novel strategy opens a novel and promising approach to design high performance sensors for H2O2detection.

Detecting ammonia (NH 3 ) is crucial for both the atmospheric environment and human health. However, developing low-cost, high-sensitivity, and flexible sensors for NH 3 is a significant challenge. Herein, we report a flexible, electrode-free NH 3 sensor based on an ink of polyaniline-covered MXene and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MXene@PANI-MWCNTs), which was developed on cotton fabric using a dispensing print method. After optimizing the MXene@PANI-MWCNTs concentration, the number of sensor arms and the printed layers, the sensor exhibited a high response in the range of 0.5–25 ppm and can detect as low as 0.5 ppm NH 3 at 40% relative humidity (RH), room temperature (25°C). The response values were significantly higher than those for other interfering gases including H 2 , CO, H 2 S, and NO 2 . Furthermore, the sensor demonstrated excellent mechanical stability, with its response dropping by only 3.7% after 1000 bending cycles. When covered with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) film, the sensor showed stable performance in the ranging of 30%–90% RH at 25°C. Additionally, MXene@PANI-MWCNTs ink was printed on masks to detect NH 3 levels in breath, offering potential for medical diagnostics and personal health monitoring.

A self-supporting polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyaniline (PANI)/SnO 2 nanofiber membrane was fabricated. • The self-supporting structure endows the sensor with high mechanical reliability. • The p–n heterojunction constructed between PANI and SnO 2 enhances NH 3 adsorption and interfacial charge transfer. • Surface hydroxylation and the hydrogen-bond network promote the increase in the NH 3 response under high-humidity conditions. Flexible room-temperature ammonia (NH 3 ) sensors hold considerable promise for wearable environmental monitoring and industrial safety, yet their practical deployment remains constrained by insufficient sensing response, inadequate mechanical durability, and pronounced humidity interference. Herein, a flexible polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyaniline (PANI)/SnO 2 heterojunction sensor was fabricated. The sensor exhibited a response of 5.2 toward 100 ppm NH 3 at room temperature, approximately 2.3 times that of the pure PANI sensor, with response/recovery times of 126/296 s. Meanwhile, the sensor demonstrated excellent flexibility, with a bending-induced response variation of less than 5% and retained 95% of its initial response after 1000 folding cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that, compared with pristine PANI, PANI/SnO 2 showed stronger NH 3 adsorption and greater charge transfer. Experimentally, humidity was found to exert a two-stage regulatory effect on the NH 3 sensing performance of PANI and PANI/SnO 2 sensors. Combined with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, the results indicate that humidity plays a dual role in the sensing process: at low humidity, competitive adsorption dominates and leads to a decreased response, whereas at high humidity, hydrogen-bond-assisted interfacial regulation promotes response recovery. This work provides an effective strategy for developing flexible PANI-based NH 3 sensors and offers new insights into humidity-dependent sensing mechanisms.
