High sensitive humidity sensor based on PEDOT:PSS/CMC-Na coated polyester fabric with directional moisture transport performance

Lingli Shen,Wanqi Feng,Dan Yu,Wei Wang

Flexible humidity sensors with excellent flexibility and sensitivity have been widely used in various fields such as human and plant health monitoring and management, non-contact human-machine interaction, smart e-textiles, and industrial and agricultural production. However, many sensors are limited their application due to the problems of unbreathable and poor wear comfort. Herein, a highly sensitive humidity sensor based on flexible polyester fabric with directional moisture transport is proposed. The facile method of coating is conducted by the preparation of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC-Na) paste with adjustable content and applied to the polyester fabric. The difference of hydrophilicity between the two sides of the fabric caused by the coating helps to directional moisture transport, thus giving rapid sensitivity, while using PEDOT: PSS can obtain the changes of electrical conductivity coming from the humidity. and the addition of CMC-Na not only helps the coating, but also provides hydrophilic groups, which is conducive to humidity sensing and directional moisture transport. The combination of this moisture-sensitive coating and directional moisture transport gives the sensor a fast humidity response time of 0.35 s, a wide humidity detection range (0‐100%(0–100% RH) and sensitivity of 4.15. Furthermore, the sensor can maintain the humidity response time in milliseconds even after being subjected to water washing and friction, indicating its excellent durability and stability.

A simple preparation of ultrathin AuNWs-PEDOT:PSS bilayer Janus film for high performance chemiresistive ammonia gas sensor

Jianchun Jiang,Qingmeng Pi,Jiahang Zhou,Yixuan Du,Yunbo Li

Ammonia is increasingly deemed a significant, green sustainable fuel which requires a large number of detection devices. In this study, ultrathin AuNWs/PEDOT:PSS Janus films had been prepared with ultrathin AuNWs film treated with H 2 S which could integrate with PEDOT:PSS film closely. The resulting transparent and flexible Janus film sensor showed the good response and selectivity performance to ammonia gas. Moreover, the sensitivity of Janus film devices to ammonia was greatly improved and the conductivity of the Janus films was kept well with increasing thermal annealing temperature. The limit detection for NH 3 was 500 ppb concentration and the improvement mechanism of the sensing performance was attributed to the increased surface area of conductive polymer . This method provides a universal platform to integrate different materials into Janus films and prepare next-generation flexible detection sensors.

Ultra-long cycle life flexible quasi-solid-state alkaline zinc batteries enabled by PEDOT:PSS encapsulated Ni3S2 nanorods

Xinying Guo,Lian Wu,Longbin Li,Jingfei Zhang,Chen Wu,Liwen Wang,Yizhong chen,Wei Zeng

Alkaline nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) batteries are considered as one of the most promising rechargeable battery systems. However, the poor cycling stability of the Ni cathode limit their service life. Herein, a conductive polymer (PEDOT:PSS) encapsulated Ni 3 S 2 hollow nanorod structure via facile immersion is proposed. PEDOT:PSS coating layer can not only provide adhesion for Ni 3 S 2 nanorods to prevent Ni 3 S 2 from falling off the substrate during cycling, but also facilitate electron transfer via the complete conductive pathway. The hollow nanorods structure of Ni 3 S 2 is beneficial to mitigate the volume change and accelerate the rapid transport of ions. Besides, a gel electrolyte with double network porous structure in our battery system is well designed. The ionic association of sodium alginate on Zn 2+ can effectively reduce the activity of bound water molecules in the solvation sheath of Zn 2+ , inhibit the side reaction and dendrite generation through the ion-confinement effect, to achieve uniform deposition of zinc ions . As a consequence, the as-designed quasi-solid-state flexible Ni-Zn battery demonstrates a high specific capacity of 1.06 mAh cm −2 (276.04 mAh g −1 ) at 8 mA cm −2 and an ultra-long cycle stability over 10,000 cycles with a capacity retention of 88.96% at 30 mA cm −2 .

Stable and Dendrite-Free Zn Anode Enabled by a PEDOT:PSS Layer for High-Performance Zn-Ion Capacitors

Cuiqin Chao,Mengqi Man,Xingchao Wang,Yan Wu,Fei Zhang,Miaomiao Wu,Qian Xiang,Zhiqiang Luo,Ying Sun

Aqueous zinc-ion capacitors (ZICs) are expected to become a new generation of energy storage systems because of their unique advantages. However, the dendritic problem of the Zn anode is still a bottleneck for their large-scale applications. Herein, we introduce a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) layer on a Zn anode to tackle the dendrite issue. Benefiting from good adhesion and film-forming characteristics, PEDOT:PSS is evenly coated on a zinc anode surface by a simple coating strategy to form a dense artificial film. The well-ordered PEDOT:PSS layer can effectively regulate the deposition direction of zinc ions and effectively prevent water from the zinc surface, resulting in uniform Zn plating/stripping without dendrite growth. A symmetrical cell assembled with PEDOT:PSS@Zn exhibits dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping behavior with stable cycling over 2670 h at a current density of 0.5 mA cm–2 and can also operate correctly at 10 mA cm–2 for up to 420 h. In addition, this ultrastable anode is equipped with an AC cathode to enable a stable full capacitor with long cycle stability (10,000 cycles).

Pressure-Temperature Dual-Parameter Flexible Sensors Based on Conformal Printing of Conducting Polymer PEDOT:PSS on Microstructured Substrate

Xiangyou Meng,Lixin Mo,Shaobo Han,Jing Zhao,Yaqin Pan,Fangdong Wang,Yi Fang,Luhai Li

Flexible sensors play an important role in collecting stimuli information and sending them to a central processing unit or cloud for analysis and decision-making. As much information is needed to be collected, the fabrication of multiparameter flexible sensors is becoming increasingly urgent. To this end, conducting polymer-based composites have been proven as promising materials for developing pressure-temperature dual-parameter sensors. However, fabrication of ideal dual-parameter sensors with fully decoupled pressure-temperature readings, good sensitivity, and a simple preparation process remain challenges. Here, a strategy of fabricating a pressure-temperature dual-parameter sensor based on conformal printing of conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) on the surface of microstructured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate is demonstrated. It is found that secondary doped PEDOT:PSS provides temperature-independent conductivity. Combined with the sea-island microstructured PDMS substrate, a screen-printed flexible sensor demonstrates fully decoupled pressure-temperature reading ability, competitive sensitivity, and good stability. The excellent sensing properties of the devices, with a maximum pressure sensitivity of 134.25 kPa −1 and linear response region over 300 kPa as well as highly sensitive temperature sensing for finger touch, together with their unique advantages of low-cost and large-area fabrication, make the printed flexible dual-parameter sensors promising applications in electric-skin (e-skin), human-machine interaction, and robotics.

High-Hardness, Water-Stable, and UV-Resistant Conductive Coatings Based on Waterborne PEDOT:PSS/Epoxy/(KH560/SiO2) Composite

Zhanqi Li,Ling Zhu,Xiaowen Xie,Meng Zhou,Changqing Fu,Shuai Chen

Despite the fact that PEDOT:PSS has been successfully used in the field of flexible electronics, some of its applications in the domain of rigid conductive coating have been limited by the pricey cost and subpar mechanical properties (hardness, adhesion, and moisture absorption) of the commercially available Clevios™ PH 1000, as well as the poor conductivity, film formation, and mechanical properties of the self-made PEDOT:PSS. In the process of investigating the low-cost preparation of PEDOT-based conductive polymer coatings, we discovered that self-made PEDOT:PSS, a waterborne epoxy resin, and a bio-based epoxy curing agent can be blended uniformly to produce good film-forming conductive coatings. Later, the addition of KH560-modified nano-SiO2further improved the coating’s hardness while ensuring a modest increase in conductivity. Meanwhile, the inadequacies of the epoxy resin, which are not UV-resistant, were considerably improved by the synergistic action of PEDOT:PSS and the modified SiO2. The result is a low-cost method designed for creating conductive coatings that are UV-resistant and may be utilized for electromagnetic, electrothermal, and antistatic shielding applications. Such a PEDOT:PSS/epoxy composite system and its design approach will broaden the scope of PEDOT:PSS’s application and will inspire future research in and practical implementations of PEDOT:PSS-based conducting coatings. Keywords:waterborne epoxy resin;PEDOT:PSS;high hardness;conductive coatings;bio-based;UV-resistant

Detection of xanthine in food samples with an electrochemical biosensor based on PEDOT:PSS and functionalized gold nanoparticles

M. Z. H. Khan,M. S. Ahommed,M. Daizy

An innovative biosensor assembly relying on glassy carbon electrodes modified with nanocomposites consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as a host matrix with functionalized gold nanoparticles (GCE/PEDOT:PSS-AuNPs) is presented for the selective and sensitive detection of xanthine (XA). The developed sensor was successfully applied for the quantification of XA in the presence of significant interferents like hypoxanthine (HXA) and uric acid (UA). Different spectroscopy and electron microscopy analyses were done to characterize the as-prepared nanocomposite. Calibration responses for the quantification of XA was linear from 5.0 × 10−8 to 1.0 × 10−5 M (R2 = 0.994), with a detection limit as low as 3.0 × 10−8 (S/N = 3). Finally, the proposed sensor was applied for the analyses of XA content in commercial fish and meat samples and satisfactory recovery percentage was obtained.

Efficient and Air-Stable Planar Perovskite Solar Cells Formed on Graphene-Oxide-Modified PEDOT:PSS Hole Transport Layer

Luo Hui,Lin Xuanhuai,Hou Xian,Pan Likun,Huang Sumei,Chen Xiaohong

As a hole transport layer, PEDOT:PSS usually limits the stability and efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its hygroscopic nature and inability to block electrons. Here, a graphene-oxide (GO)-modified PEDOT:PSS hole transport layer was fabricated by spin-coating a GO solution onto the PEDOT:PSS surface. PSCs fabricated on a GO-modified PEDOT:PSS layer exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.34%, which is higher than 11.90% of PSCs with the PEDOT:PSS layer. Furthermore, the stability of the PSCs was significantly improved, with the PCE remaining at 83.5% of the initial PCE values after aging for 39 days in air. The hygroscopic PSS material at the PEDOT:PSS surface was partly removed during spin-coating with the GO solution, which improves the moisture resistance and decreases the contact barrier between the hole transport layer and perovskite layer. The scattered distribution of the GO at the PEDOT:PSS surface exhibits superior wettability, which helps to form a high-quality perovskite layer with better crystallinity and fewer pin holes. Furthermore, the hole extraction selectivity of the GO further inhibits the carrier recombination at the interface between the perovskite and PEDOT:PSS layers. Therefore, the cooperative interactions of these factors greatly improve the light absorption of the perovskite layer, the carrier transport and collection abilities of the PSCs, and especially the stability of the cells.

Effects of carbon nanomaterials hybridization of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) on thermoelectric performance

Yihan Wang,Siqi Wu,Rui Zhang,Kai Du,Qiang Yin,Bo Jiang,Qinjian Yin,Kun Zhang

The influence of multiple dimensional carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene quantum dots (GQD), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and graphene sheets (GNS) of the thermoelectric properties in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS)-based hybrids have been investigated. PEDOT: PSS matrix was successfully used to prepare PEDOT: PSS/GQDs (PGQD), PEDOT: PSS/MWCNT (PCNT) and PEDOT: PSS/GNS (PGNS) composite films. According to structural characteristics, strong π–π interactions existed between carbon materials and PEDOT: PSS, and PEDOT: PSS layers with organized and arranged morphology were easier templated by GNS than GQD or MWCNT. It was found that besides energy filtering effect, hole-phonon interaction occurred with further addition of GNS and GQDs in PGNS and PGQD composite films. The optimal power factor (PF) of approximately 580 and 103 μW m−1 K−2 at 363 K were acquired in PGNS composite films at 5 wt% GNS and PGQD films with 1 wt% GQD filling, respectively. Unlike PGNS and PGQD films, electrical conductivity of PCNT reduced upon the addition of MWCNT, while the Seebeck coefficient decreased firstly, and then increased and reached to the highest value at 10 wt% MWCNT. The optimal PF of 381.8 μW m−1 K−2 at 363 K was obtained with weight fraction of 0.1 wt% in PCNT films.

Scalable fabrication of highly crosslinked conductive nanofibrous films and their applications in energy storage and electromagnetic interference shielding

Haoran Lai,Wenyue Li,Ling Xu,Xiaoming Wang,Huan Jiao,Zhaoyang Fan,Zhongli Lei,Ye Yuan

With their unique properties and potentials in several critical applications, highly crosslinked and conductive nanofibrous films (HCC-NFs) have attracted broad attentions recently. However, it is still a great challenge to produce high-performance and uniform HCC-NFs with controllable thickness on a large-scale. Electrospinning could be used to fabricate nanofiber films, but it falls short in creating intimate mechanical and electrical joints between adjacent nanofibers for crosslink. Herein, a new strategy inspired by the fabric shrinking when drying was applied to produce HCC-NFs. Hydrophilically-engineered electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber film was dip-coated in a water solution of PEDOT:PSS, and was then dried naturally. By preventing contraction of the film in its lateral plane while allowing its thickness shrinking, the capillary effect during water evaporation resulted in collapse of the large pore volume in the film and the subsequent joint formations between PEDOT:PSS-coated PAN nanofibers, which are further cemented together by the conductive polymer coating. The electrochemical, electrical and mechanical properties of such fabricated HCC-NFs were studied, and they were successfully applied as electrodes to demonstrate high-rate supercapacitors and as a flexible porous material for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. The studies suggest HCC-NFs produced by this facile method have promising prospects in several applications.

Wearable supercapacitors based on conductive cotton yarns

Ma Yun,Wang Qiufan,Liang Xiao,Zhang Daohong,Miao Menghe

High-performance fiber- and yarn-shaped supercapacitors based on commonly available fiber materials and production technologies are needed to meet the fast developing electronic textile market. In this investigation, natural cotton and stainless steel fibers (SSFs) are blended to form a conductive yarn for constructing novel high-performance two-ply yarn supercapacitors. The supercapacitors show very high areal capacitance, energy density, flexibility and electrochemical stability. The excellent performance is attributed to the high porosity, high conductivity and distributive metal fiber network formed in the blended yarn, coupled with the high electrochemical efficiency of the nanostructured polypyrrole (PPy) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) pseudocapacitance materials. The SSF-cotton blended yarn is economic to produce and retains the flexibility of a normal cotton yarn that is commonly used in apparel textiles. This greatly facilitates the integration of the two-ply yarn supercapacitor into electronic textiles.
