High-efficient electrochemical sensing platform based on MOF-doped Au/PEDOT composites toward simultaneous detection of catechin and sunset yellow in tea beverage

Junhong Li,Danhua Zhu,Hui Huang,Shuqian Xie,Jingkun Xu,Ruirui Yue,Xuemin Duan

Herein, the electrochemical sensing platform has been proposed based on metal-organic framework doped Au/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) composites to simultaneously detect the catechin and sunset yellow in tea beverage. The characterization reveals that the Au nanoparticles distribute well on/in conducting PEDOT, and the relatively few UIO-66 particles as the dopant intersperse the Au/PEDOT composites. The electrochemical test has been used to study the sensing properties toward catechin and sunset yellow simultaneous detection. The results show that the Au/PEDOT/MWCNT-CONH-UIO-66 performs a wide range of 0.03∼60 µM and 0.3∼40 µM, low detection limit as 0.01 μM / 0.15 μM towards catechin and sunset yellow simultaneous detection, respectively. Furthermore, the Au/PEDOT/MWCNT-CONH-UIO-66 possesses a wide linear detection range and high sensitivity for catechin and sunset yellow detection. Moreover, the Au/PEDOT/MWCNT-CONH-UIO-66 composite also has great stability and anti-interference ability. Finally, the sensing platform was applied to detect catechin and sunset yellow in the tea beverage compared with the high-performance liquid chromatography method. To the best of our knowledge, our work first reported the electrochemical sensing materials for catechin and sunset yellow simultaneous detection in food, which will provide a certain theoretical analysis and experimental experience for the preparation of materials used for catechin and sunset yellow simultaneous detection in food.

PtNPs/Short MWCNT-PEDOT: PSS-Modified Microelectrode Array to Detect Neuronal Firing Patterns in the Dorsal Raphe Nucleus and Hippocampus of Insomnia Rats

Yun Wang,Mixia Wang,Yuchuan Dai,Yilin Song,Yiding Wang,Botao Lu,Yinghui Li,Xinxia Cai

Research on the intracerebral mechanism of insomnia induced by serotonin (5-HT) deficiency is indispensable. In order to explore the effect of 5-HT deficiency-induced insomnia on brain regions related to memory in rats, we designed and fabricated a microelectrode array that simultaneously detects the electrical activity of the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) and hippocampus in normal, insomnia and recovery rats in vivo. In the DRN and hippocampus of insomnia rats, our results showed that the spike amplitudes decreased by 40.16 and 57.92%, the spike repolarization slope decreased by 44.64 and 48.59%, and the spiking rate increased by 66.81 and 63.40%. On a mesoscopic scale, the increased firing rates of individual neurons led to an increased δ wave power. In the DRN and hippocampus of insomnia rats, the δ wave power increased by 57.57 and 67.75%. Furthermore, two segments’ δ wave slopes were also increased in two brain regions of the insomnia rats. Our findings suggest that 5-HT deficiency causes the hyperactivity of neurons in the hippocampus and DRN; the DRN’s firing rate and the hippocampal neuronal amplitude reflect insomnia in rats more effectively. Further studies on alleviating neurons affected by 5-HT deficiency and on achieving a highly effective treatment for insomnia by the microelectrode array are needed. Keywords:microelectrode array;insomnia;electrophysiology;dorsal raphe nucleus;serotonin

A highly sensitive molecularly-imprinted electrochemical sensor based on a conducting PEDOT/SA hydrogel for the detection of cortisol with exceptional antifouling properties

Jiasheng Wang,Luyu Sun,Yaxuan Zuo,Ni Hui

Electrochemical biosensors offer a cost-effective and noninvasive approach for continuously monitoring cortisol in complex bodily fluids like blood, sweat, or saliva. However, their high sensitivity makes them vulnerable to biological contamination when used with biological samples. In this study, an electrochemical sensor was developed using an antifouling molecularly-imprinted hydrogel that combines the antifouling properties of a conducting polymer hydrogel with the recognition capabilities of a molecularly-imprinted polymer (MIP). The conductive hydrogel, composed of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/sodium alginate (PEDOT/SA), was synthesized through an electrochemical gelation technique. This hydrogel displayed a well-connected structure at the macroscopic level, leading to an increased effective surface area for the resulting electrochemical sensor. The MIP electrochemical sensor effectively minimized non-specific adsorption and demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity in detecting trace amounts of cortisol in complex physiological fluids. Detection of the target analytes was accomplished using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, with a linear range spanning from 10 –12 to 10 –8 M and a detection limit of 0.314 pM, as well as chronocoulometry, with a linear range from 10 –12 to 10 –7 M and a detection limit of 0.131 pM. The sensor showed commendable performance in accurately detecting cortisol in diverse bodily fluids such as saliva, sweat, and serum. By combining the MIP with a conductive hydrogel that resists biofouling, the electrochemical sensor exhibited high specificity, sensitivity, and exceptional resistance to interference when used in practical biological applications.

Ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of ochratoxin A based on signal amplification by one-pot synthesized flower-like PEDOT–AuNFs supported on a graphene oxide sponge

Pengxiang Wang,Luyan Wang,Mei Ding,Meishan Pei,Wenjuan Guo

To enhance the sensitivity of an aptasensor, a novel strategy was designed to develop an electrochemical aptasensor based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene)–gold nanoflower (PEDOT–AuNF) composites supported on a three-dimensional graphene oxide sponge (GOS). GOS with a three-dimensional sponge-like porous structure, exhibiting excellent electrical conductivity and a large surface area, provided the first amplification of the electrochemical signal for ochratoxin A (OTA) detection. PEDOT–AuNFs, synthesized by an ionic liquid-assisted one-pot method, presented a peculiar hierarchical flower-like structure, a high electroactive surface area, and more binding sites for immobilizing the aptamer molecules by the Au–S bonds. When PEDOT–AuNFs were supported on the surface of GOS by the interaction of the π–π packing between PEDOT and graphene oxide, a synergistic effect was produced to provide the second amplification for the aptasensor. PEDOT–AuNFs/GOS provided an ultrasensitive detection technique by multiple signal amplification for the electrochemical sensing of OTA. Consequently, this strategy not only endowed the aptasensor with high sensitivity but also needed no complicated signal amplification. The electrochemical sensor was fabricated successfully on a glassy carbon electrode to detect OTA with a linear response in the range of 0.01–20 ng L−1 and a limit of detection of 4.9 pg L−1. Moreover, it displayed good specificity, reproducibility and stability. The utilization of the proposed aptasensor for the quantitative determination of OTA in wine indicates that it can find promising applications in detecting OTA and even other mycotoxins in foodstuffs.

Ziyang Lu,Zehui Yu,Jinbo Dong,Minshan Song,Yang Liu,Xinlin Liu,Zhongfei Ma,Hang Su,Yongsheng Yan,Pengwei Huo

The Z-scheme imprinted ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag/PEDOT was synthesized by the microwave polymerization method and surface imprinting technique, which possessed good partial hollow spherical structure, good light response ability, good magnetic separation performance, good photocatalytic stability and reproducibility. More importantly, due to the introduction of Ag/PEDOT into the surface imprinted layer, Z-scheme structure was formed to enhance the photocatalytic activity based on Ag acted as the mediator, meanwhile, owing to the existence of the imprinted cavity in the surface imprinted layer, the selectivity had been significantly improved, in a word, the as-prepared Z-scheme imprinted ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag/PEDOT achieved the goal for simultaneously improving the photocatalytic activity and selectivity. Z-scheme imprinted ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag/PEDOT possessed the highest photodegradation rate (71.77%) for degradation of tetracycline under the simulated sunlight irradiation of 120 min, which was approximately 4.74 times to that of ZnFe 2 O 4 , 1.42 times to that of Ag/PEDOT and 1.31 times to that of non-imprinted ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag/PEDOT, respectively. And the coefficient of selectivity of Z-scheme imprinted ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag/PEDOT relative to ZnFe 2 O 4 , Ag/PEDOT, non-imprinted ZnFe 2 O 4 /Ag/PEDOT was 1.84, 1.82, 1.79 in the single antibiotic solution and 1.78, 1.75, 1.67 in the binary antibiotic solution, respectively. This work provided a new synthesis strategy for the imprinted photocatalysts and also provided a new idea for the treatment of specific pollutants in the water environment.

Degradation of desphenyl chloridazon in a novel synergetic electrocatalytic system with Ni–Sb–SnO2/Ti anode and PEDOT/PSS-CNTs modified air diffusion cathode

Jingyun Zhao,Zexu Chi,Heng Dong,Changfu Sun,Han Yu,Hongbing Yu

This study explored the depth treatment of desphenly chloridazon (DPC) wastewater by a novel synergetic dual-electrodes electrocatalytic (SDEs) system which consisted of Ni–Sb–SnO 2 /Ti anode (NSSTA) and PEDOT/PSS-CNTs modified activated carbon air diffusion cathode (PP-CNTs AC ADC). NSSTA exhibited an enhanced capability to produce reactive oxygen species (·OH and O 3 ), its O 3 production increased to 6.54 mg/L. PP-CNTs AC ADC was observed to have improved activity of catalyzing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with 648.23 mg/L H 2 O 2 generated. Owing to the synergetic effect of O 3 and H 2 O 2 , additional ·OH was obtained in SDEs system through the electro-peroxone reaction. Compared with the single-electrode electrocatalytic (SE) systems, the SDEs system showed superior pesticide degradation performance , higher mineralization current efficiency (MCE) and lower energy consumption (EC). In the SDEs system, the optimal 91.7% of DPC removal efficiency and 90.7% of DPC mineralization efficiency were obtained within 150 min by electrocatalytic oxidation of 17.5 ppm and 25 ppm pesticide wastewater at the current density of 11.94 mA/cm 2 , respectively. The treated water showed reduced acute toxicity than that of the raw wastewater, which suggested that the SDEs system is a promising technology for depth treatment of the pesticide industry effluent with simultaneous decontamination and detoxification realized.

Influences of solvents and monomer concentrations on the electrochemical performance and structural properties of electrodeposited PEDOT films: a comparative study in water and acetonitrile

Yang Zhang,Linze Li,Bingwei He

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) has emerged as a promising coating for neural electrodes especially through convenient electrodeposition methods. To investigate the influences of solvents and EDOT monomer concentrations on the electrochemical performance and structural characteristics of PEDOT, both aqueous and acetonitrile solutions were employed with varying monomer concentrations during deposition. The prepared PEDOT films were examined for the surface morphology, electrochemical performance, and chemical structures. The results showed that an increase in EDOT concentration in either solvent led to PEDOT films with improved charge storage capacity and reduced impedance magnitude. At equivalent monomer concentrations, PEDOT films generated in acetonitrile exhibited a rougher surface texture and better electrochemical performance. Notably, the growth rate of charge storage capacity of PEDOT prepared in acetonitrile relative to the deposited charge density was 2.5 times that of PEDOT prepared in water. These findings could help to the optimization of PEDOT coating preparation to enhance electrode performance.

Block-designed hydrogel with segregated CNTs/MXene networks and PEDOT interfacial engineering for neuro-skin applications: Multimodal sensing, nerve regeneration and self-powered energy harvesting

Yi Wu,Jiyuan Li,Shanfeng Zhang,Shengpu Chang,Wanqi Sun,Peng Wang,Xia Huang

Conductive hydrogels typically encounter intrinsic trade-offs among sensitivity, mechanical robustness, and multifunctional integration. In this study, a block-structured hydrogel addresses these limitations by spatially segregating one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and two-dimensional (2D) MXene within a semi-interpenetrating polyacrylamide/sodium alginate (PAM/SA) network. To further enhance interfacial conductivity, MXene-rich regions are coated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), achieving a conductivity of 16.2 S m −1 . This bioinspired structure realizes strain-dependent and strain-independent conductive pathways while suppressing phase separation, enabling ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor = 36.6 at 600–800 % strain) and wide pressure detection (0.1–21.7 kPa). This multifunctional hydrogel-based sensor features motion monitoring, temperature sensing, and Morse code encryption capabilities. The hydrogel mitigates the stress-masking effect through a biomimetic modulus design and, in synergy with the SA/MXene components, effectively reduces inflammatory factor levels. Simultaneously, the three-dimensional conductive network enhances electrical signal transmission, facilitating the functional recovery of neural tissues and promoting sciatic nerve regeneration in mice. Furthermore, the integrated friction-based nanogenerator demonstrates efficient energy harvesting capabilities, achieving a peak power density of 3.2 W m −2 . By seamlessly integrating sensing, nerve regeneration, and energy autonomy, this conductive hydrogel establishes a pioneering “neuroskin” platform, enabling a closed-loop “sense-repair-power” interface for next-generation bioelectronic systems.

Compatible and high-efficiency quasi-solid-state integrated photocapacitor based on the synergism of PEDOT/RGO electrode and gel electrolyte to improve the carrier migration

Yuanduo Qu,Siqi Liao,Liangyi Wu,Junkai Wang,Lianfeng Duan,Xia He,Fushen Lu

An integrated photocapacitor (IPC) is a light-driven self-charging capacitor, which can overcome the impact of solar energy fluctuations by converting the solar radiation to electrochemical energy and store it simultaneously. However, current IPCs suffer from incompatibility problems, device packing, serious carrier recombination, and long-range electron transmission path, which lead to low conversion efficiency and cycling performance. To address these issues, we propose a three-electrode quasi-solid-state IPC based on a charge-separated transition mechanism of PEDOT/RGO compatible electrode and BMIMBF4 ion gel electrolyte to accelerate carrier migration. The overall conversion efficiency of this IPC reached 5.8% and the energy storage efficiency could be maintained at 84.57%. Besides that, this bendable free-standing electrode can be applied in flexible and high-voltage IPCs as a reliable off-grid systems to supply next-generation electronics.

Electrochemical control of the morphological evolution of PEDOT on a Ni–Co(OH)2/carbon cloth surface to modulate the performance of wearable H2O2 sensors

Xinmeng Zhang,Mingyue Bai,Lei Ge,Yuanyuan Yao

The slow redox rate of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in neutral environments makes the H2O2 sensor inadequate for the detection of low levels of signalling molecules. The aim of this study is to fabricate a flexible sensing electrode by hydrothermally loading micro-nanometer Ni and Co(OH)2 on carbon cloth (CC) and electrochemically depositing poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on the surface of the electrode. The sensor presented high sensitivity (10.43 mA mM−1 cm−2), a wide detection range (0.033–120.848 mM), a low detection limit (0.92 nM), high stability, and excellent anti-interference performance in neutral solutions. Ni–Co(OH)2 provides abundant active sites while CC solves their agglomeration phenomenon and conductivity. The PEDOT film offers heightened conductivity, hydrophilicity, interfacial stability, and an electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). The side area of the chrysanthemum petal like PEDOT is 39 ± 7 times the bottom area, and PEDOT increases the ECSA of the composite to six times that of CC. Electrochemical precise control of PEDOT morphology to improve sensor performance provides a new strategy for the application of PEDOT in sensors.

Highly sensitive piezoresistive and thermally responsive fibrous networks from the in situ growth of PEDOT on MWCNT-decorated electrospun PU fibers for pressure and temperature sensing

Luo Yunyun,Zhao Libo,Luo Guoxi,Dong Linxi,Xia Yong,Li Min,Li Ziping,Wang Kaifei,Maeda Ryutaro,Jiang Zhuangde

Flexible electronics have demonstrated various strategies to enhance the sensory ability for tactile perception and wearable physiological monitoring. Fibrous microstructures have attracted much interest because of their excellent mechanical properties and fabricability. Herein, a structurally robust fibrous mat was first fabricated by electrospinning, followed by a sequential process of functionalization utilizing ultrasonication treatment and in situ polymerization growth. Electrospun polyurethane (PU) microfibers were anchored with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to form conductive paths along each fiber by a scalable ultrasonic cavitation treatment in an MWCNT suspension. After, a layer of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was grown on the surface of PU fibers decorated with MWCNTs to enhance the conductive conjunctions of MWCNTs. Due to the superior electromechanical behaviors and mechanical reinforcement of PEDOT, the PEDOT/MWCNT@PU mat-based device exhibits a wide working range (0–70 kPa), high sensitivity (1.6 kPa −1 ), and good mechanical robustness (over 18,000 cycles). The PEDOT/MWCNT@PU mat-based sensor also demonstrates a good linear response to different temperature variations because of the thermoelectricity of the PEDOT/MWCNT composite. This novel strategy for the fabrication of multifunctional fibrous mats provides a promising opportunity for future applications for high-performance wearable devices.

Carboxylated Cellulose as a Soft Template Combined with PEDOT Derivatives in [BMIM]Cl: A Competent Biosensor for Detection of Guanine and Uric Acid in the Blood

Huiying Liu,Ruxangul Jamal,Tursun Abdiryim,Rena Simayi,Lielie Liu,Yajun Liu

In this paper, carboxylated cellulose (CLC) dissolved in [BMIM]Cl as a soft template combined with the functional group (−NH2, −SH)-grafted poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivatives was synthesized by an in situ polymerization method. Structural analysis revealed that CLC increased the degree of conjugation of the polymers in the composites and also led to the formation of the fibrous and sheet structure of the composite. The results of the electrochemical performance measurements revealed that the electrode modified by PEDOT-MeNH2/CLC and PEDOT-MeSH/CLC had detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.38(0.1–380 μM) and 0.042(0.02–520 μM) for the detection of guanine (G), while for the detection of uric acid (UA), the corresponding detection limits (S/N = 3) were 0.255(5–400 μM) and 0.085(0.4–650 μM). The PEDOT-MeSH/CLC-based electrochemical sensor also possessed a wide linear response with the detection limits of 0.077(0.6–620 μM) and 0.144(0.2–460 μM) for the simultaneous detection of UA and G, respectively.
