Robust antifogging films have significant potential for a wide range of applications on the surfaces of transparent materials. Nevertheless, currently either their preparation methods are complex or their mechanical properties such as hardness, wear, scrub and water resistance are yet to be improved before they can be applied in practical applications. In this work, we have developed a facile room temperature approach to fabricating free-standing films of excellent antifogging properties and mechanical robustness. Glutaraldehyde (GA) was used to cross-link polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and ultraviolet (UV) light was applied to initiate polymerization of poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), leading to robust interpenetrating networks (IPN). The films also had excellent mechanical properties with pencil hardness up to 8H, Taber wear-resistance up to 10,000 cycles, and sponge scrub resistance up to 300 cycles. The tensile strength and tearing strength of films reached as high as 100 MPa and 700 kN/m, respectively, much higher than those of free-standing films reported so far. This approach may hold great potential for broad application on various substrates, particularly those with low glass transition temperatures (e.g., transparent plastic films). It may expand the possibilities for future applications of free-standing antifogging films for screens, optical lenses and so on.

With the rapid expansion of the new energy industry and electronics market, the demand for lithium is growing rapidly, leading to a significant increase in the price of the metal. There has been great interest in lithium extraction from salt lakes. The powdered lithium ion-sieve (LIS) suffers from poor dispersion and difficult recovery. Composite polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber mats with H 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 (HMO) were prepared by electrostatic spinning and radiation induced cross-linking. HMO was immobilized in the nanofiber mats by covalent attachment, cross-linking and entrapment. Hydrophilicity of PVA, high porosity of nanofiber and cross-linked 3D network endow the HMO/PVA nanofiber mats good mechanical strength, excellent Li + adsorption performance and long service life. 1/1-HMO/PVA nanofiber mats exhibit Li + adsorption capacity of 30.1 mg/g in salt-lake brine, which was superior to most LIS-containing adsorbents. Even in real salt-lake water with very low Li concentration of 15.45 mg/L and high Mg/Li ratio of 1260/1, the nanofiber mats have an excellent adsorption capacity of 24.2 mg/g and high distribution coefficient of 9713.34 mL/g, which was close to that of HMO powder. After ten adsorption and elution repetitions Li + adsorption capacity decreased less than 10%, which indicates the long-term stability of the HMO/PVA nanofiber mats. The loss rate of Mn is less than 5% and gradually decreases with the increase of the number of cycles. The present study demonstrates the potential application of HMO/PVA nanofiber mats for direct recovery of Li + from salt-lake especially in low-grade high Mg/Li ratio liquid lithium ore where holds a large proportion of the typical salt-lakes in China.

Polyelectrolyte hydrogels have great potential as gel-polymer electrolytes (GPE) because of their low-cost and environmental benefits. Here a polyelectrolyte hydrogel of high ionic conductivities and mechanical properties was developed via the formation of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (s-IPN) GPE, which consists of Poly (2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid) (PAMPS), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium montmorillonite(MMT). The additions of MMT and PVA can both increase the ionic conductivities and the tensile strength of PAMPS. PAMPS/PVA/MMT s-IPN GPE show excellent overall performance of ionic conductivity of 6.4×10 -2 S cm -1 and tensile strength of 24.3 MPa when the ratio of PVA/AMPS is at 0.8:1 and MMT is at 7wt%. When PAMPS/PVA/MMT s-IPN is used as a GPE in supercapacitors, it exhibits good electrolyte behavior with its specific capacitance of 208 F g -1 , close to that of using 4M KOH aqueous solution electrolyte.

A flexible ternary composite film based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyaniline (PANI) and WS2 was prepared via the electropolymerization of the prefabricated PVA/aniline/WS2 hydrogel. As-prepared PVA/PANI/WS2 composite film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and electrochemical technologies. The PVA/PANI/WS2 film had a specific capacitance of 2437 mF cm -2 at 2 mV s -1 in H2SO4 solution (1.0 M). After 5000 cycles, the capacitance retention reached 70% of initial specific capacitance. The high electrochemical behavior of composite film was mainly attributed to the ionic conductivity of PVA and the integration of pseudocapacitance of PANI and WS2. This flexible PVA/PANI/WS2 film provided a potential application in flexible supercapacitor.

Agrochemicals play an irreplaceable role in the process of agricultural production. However, unreasonable use of agrochemicals can cause serious harm to the environment. Therefore, the controlled release of agrochemicals is critical in the sustainable development of agriculture and benefiting the environment. In this work, a composite hydrogel was prepared from dialdehyde cellulose and reinforced by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) while cysteamine dihydrochloride acted as a cross-linking agent to render the hydrogel pH and redox-responsive for the controlled release of a model agrochemical, i.e., salicylic acid (SA). The aldehyde content in the modified cellulose reached 10.65 mmol/g while the yield of oxidized cellulose was 55%. The structure, morphology and properties of the composite hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the release behavior of SA loaded in the hydrogels under various different conditions was also studied. The results showed that the addition of PVA could improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels, and the cumulative release of SA could be modulated by varying release conditions or environmental stimuli; and the release kinetics was well fitted with the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. Moreover, the release of SA could be promoted under acidic conditions and in the presence of reducing agent glutathione (GSH). The findings from this work particularly benefit the agricultural production.

Biomass-based aerogel fibers have attracted increasing attention due to their renewable nature. However, their disadvantages, such as low mechanical strength, poor long-range order, and easy combustion, are still significant challenges. Herein, a directed freezing-assisted forced stretching strategy is developed to fabricate sheath-core structured Ca-alginate/polyvinyl alcohol (Ca-A/PVA) aerogel fibers with Long-range-ordered pores. The Ca-A/PVA aerogel fibers (3:2 m/m) exhibit the best comprehensive mechanical properties in terms of low thermal conductivity of 0.0524 W·m −1 ·K −1 , a density of 0.1614 g·cm −3 , a porosity of 89.9 %, a tensile strength of 8.72 MPa, a tensile modulus of 249.7 MPa, a toughness of 1.98 MJ∙m −3 , and a self-extinguishing time from the fire of <1.2 s. The Ca-A/PVA fabrics showed a maximum absolute temperature difference of 11.4 °C at −20 °C and 14.0 °C at 60 °C compared to the plate temperature. The presented strategy is generalizable to other alginate-based aerogel fibers (e.g., alginate/guar gum).

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, a large number of disposable protective masks have been manufactured and used, and the abandonment of masks has caused enormous pollution. In this paper the chitosan (CS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and water were used as raw materials and the nanofiber membranes were prepared by electrostatic spinning. The CS/PVA fiber membranes were crosslinked by glutaraldehyde hydrochloric acid vapour. The fiber morphology, hydrolysis resistance, antibacterial properties, chemical structure, thermal stability and filtration performance of nanofiber membranes were characterized. Results shows that the antibacterial performance of the crosslinked composite nanofibers exceeds 97%, the thermal stability is improved, and the fiber morphology is not destroyed. The hybridized fiber membrane has high filtration performance, excellent antibacterial and hydrolysis resistance, which broadening the PVA fiber membrane application. It is expected to replace traditional protective materials and relieve environmental pressure.

Plasma treatment is considered a straightforward, cost-effective, and environmental-friendly technique for surface modification of film materials. In this study, air plasma treatment was applied for performance improvement of pure PVA, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)/PVA, and CNC/oxalic acid (OA)/PVA films. Compared with the original performance of pure PVA, the mechanical properties and water resistance of air plasma treated films were greatly improved. Among them, the CNC/OA/PVA film treated by three minutes of air plasma irradiation exhibits the most remarkable performance in mechanical properties (tensile strength: 132.7 MPa; Young’s modulus: 5379.9 MPa) and water resistance (degree of swelling: 47.5%; solubility: 6.0%). By means of various modern characterization methods, the wettability, surface chemical structure, surface roughness, and thermal stability of different films before and after air plasma treatment were further revealed. Based on the results obtained, the air plasma treatment only changed the surface chemical structure, surface roughness, and hydrophobicity, while keeping the inner structure of films intact. Keywords:air plasma;PVA film;surface modification;water resistance;crosslinking

The self-healing ability of articular cartilage is poor, and hydrogel materials are expected to be used for cartilage replacement due to their high-water content and good biocompatibility. Here, the polyvinyl alcohol-acrylamide-agarose multi-network hydrogel was proposed. The hydrogel has a compressive modulus of 1.19 MPa and a compressive strength limit of 8.87 MPa, as well as a tensile modulus of 0.63 MPa and a tensile strength limit of 1.08 MPa. The mechanical properties of hydrogel meet the requirement for cartilage replacement materials. The in vitro cell experiments indicate that the introduction of agarose improves the cell adhesion of the hydrogel, which is expected to be beneficial in the field of biomedicine.

The development of modern microelectronic devices and chip integration cause electronics devices to generate excessive heat. To overcome such challenges in the near future, designing thermally conductive composites with improved stability, conductivity, and excellent electric insulation properties is critical. In this study, a novel strategy was proposed to construct superior thermally conductive networks with boron nitride nanosheets-Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (BNNS-MWCNT)/ poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposites through the electrospinning technique and hot-pressing process. BNNS and MWCNT are aligned along with the fiber orientation , and MWCNT, with high length-to-diameter ratio characteristics, can act as a bridging point for uncontacted BNNS. Interestingly, when the mass fraction of BNNS-MWCNT was 20 % and the mass ratio between the BNNS: MWCNT was maintained as 9:1, the resultant BNNS-MWCNT/PVA nanocomposites exhibited an excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 11.49 W/(m·K) and observed a tremendous heat dissipation capacity than PVA and BNNS/PVA composites. Moreover, the BNNS-MWCNT/PVA recorded excellent electrical insulation properties. The present work provides inspiration for the preparation of composites with low fillers and high thermal conductivity.

Ti3C2TxMXene has attracted considerable interest as a new emerging two-dimensional material for environmental remediation due to its high adsorption capacity. However, its use is greatly limited by its poor mechanical properties, low processability and recyclability, and the low dispersity of such powder materials. In this work, a porous adsorbent (C–CMP) containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), Ti3C2TxMXene and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was prepared by a simple and environmentally-friendly foaming method. Glutaraldehyde was used as crosslinker to improve the mechanical properties and boost the adsorption efficiency of methylene blue (MB) molecules. Fourier transform infrared (FT–IR), elemental analysis (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) further confirmed that the preparation of the C–CMP foam and cross-linking reaction were successful. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicated that the macropores were distributed homogeneously. The adsorption experiment showed that maximum adsorption capacity of MB can reach 239.92 mg·g−1which was much higher than anionic dye (methyl orange, 45.25 mg·g−1). The adsorption behavior fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Based on FT–IR, EDX and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, the adsorption mechanism between C–CMP and MB molecules was attributed to electrostatic interaction.Keywords:foam;Ti3C2TxMXene;polyvinyl alcohol;cellulose nanocrystals;methylene blue;adsorption

To eliminate the interfacial defects between polymeric matrix and inorganic fillers in hybrid membranes, various strategies have been proposed by modifying membrane materials or optimizing membrane formation process. In this work, a ternary cross-linked PVA-APTES-ZIF-90 (PVA, poly(vinyl alcohol); APTES, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane; ZIF-90, zeolitic imidazolate framework-90) membrane was developed to eliminate interfacial defects between PVA and ZIF-90 for enhanced ethanol dehydration performance, where APTES served as a covalently linked bridge to cross-link PVA and ZIF-90 simultaneously. The morphologies and physicochemical properties of the resultant membranes were characterized by various characterization techniques. Moreover, we also explored the effects of [ZIF-90]/[APTES] mole ratio and [ZIF-90]/[APTES] loading on the separation performance of the trinity membranes. The results indicated that ZIF-90 particles showed better dispersion and compatibility in PVA-APTES-ZIF-90 trinity membranes than in PVA/ZIF-90 hybrid membrane, attributed to the ternary cross-linking among PVA, APTES, and ZIF-90. Compared with pristine PVA membrane, PVA-APTES-ZIF-90 trinity membranes showed stronger anti-swelling and mechanical properties, as well as more excellent separation performance, which resulted from the incorporation of cross-linker APTES and ZIF-90 particles. The separation factor of the optimal PVA-APTES-ZIF-90 trinity membrane was improved by 215.4%, up to 552, accompanied by a total flux of 82 g/m 2 h. Ternary cross-linking among cross-linker, inorganic filler, and polymeric chain is therefore believed to be a feasible strategy in preparing polymeric-based hybrid membranes with high separation performance. Graphical abstract Summary: A novel ternary cross-linked hybrid membrane with APTES as co-cross-linkers of ZIF-90 and PVA for efficient ethanol dehydration
