Camphor leaf (CL) was widely used to extract camphor oil and thus led to abundant forestry waste. In order to reduce pollution, the waste CL was used to prepare bio-adsorbent for Pb(II) removal after alkali treatment and functional modification. The effects of solution pH, initial Pb(II) concentration, contact time and solution temperature were investigated on adsorption process to evaluate the potential application in heavy metal ions’ removal. It was found that the massive hydroxyl groups released and plenty of micro-pores formed after the alkali treatment of CL bio-adsorbent, which obviously increased the Pb(II) adsorption. And the adsorption performance promoted continually after further functional modification by ionized 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA). The increase of pH was favourable for the adsorption even though the precipitation effect was deducted. Linear fitting method was more suitable to describe the adsorption process than nonlinear fitting method, including adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics research. The adsorption thermodynamics was better to be described by nonlinear fitting method due to its lower root mean square error ( RMSE ) value and higher R 2 value. Among which, the adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics were fitted well to Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The adsorption thermodynamics was exothermic in nature and the process was spontaneous at low solution temperature. The adsorption mechanism was revealed as the combination of dominant chemical adsorption and assistant physical adsorption.

In this study, a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for highly sensitive and selective detection of Pb(II) was developed based on Ru(bpy) 3 2+ encapsulated UiO66 metal-organic-framework (Ru(bpy) 3 2+ −UiO66 MOF) and −NH 2 group functionalized silica (NH 2 −SiO 2 ). The NH 2 −SiO 2 with large surface area provided an excellent platform for the ECL sensor. As numerous exposed carboxyl groups were present on UiO66 backbone, the Ru(bpy) 3 2+ −UiO66 could be steadily immobilized to NH 2 −SiO 2 by forming amide bonds. Meanwhile, the introduced UiO66 MOF which used for the encapsulation of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ , significantly enhanced the ECL efficiency of the proposed sensor, as it possessed a large specific surface area and porosity for the loading of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ . Moreover, a high quenching effect on ECL intensity was obtained in the presence of Pb(II) in the electrolyte. Under the optimal conditions, the quenched ECL intensity showed a good linear relationship within Pb(II) concentration in the range from 1.0×10 −6 to 1.0×10 2 μM, with a detection limit of 1.0×10 −7 μM ( S / N =3). The proposed sensor for Pb(II) detection was simple in operation, rapid in testing, stable in signal, and showed a good anti-interference ability to some other metal ions. Besides, its application for detecting Pb(II) in a real sample was also investigated here. This work provides a potential platform for metal ions detection in environmental monitoring field.

The application of sorbent in solving the water pollution induced by heavy metals or metalloids is severely hindered by poor sorption performance and high cost, especially in simultaneous removal. Design and synthesis of nanocomposites as effective sorbents has been widely considered as a promising approach to address this problem. Herein, graphene oxide supported organo-montmorillonite composite (GO-OM) was prepared through a facile ultrasonic-assisted method for the first time and exhibited excellent synergetic adsorption behavior for mixed pollutants in aqueous solutions. Unlike previous studies, the simultaneous removal process can be well-described by the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The sorption capacities of GO-OM are very high for both metal cations and oxyanionic groups, showing excellent potential in the removal of multiple contaminants. Our study also reveals that GO-OM has high recycling efficiency and good performance under a low level concentration. All results suggest that GO-OM can be used as effective and ecofriendly sorbents for the removal of combined pollutants in an aqueous environment. This work contributes to developing high-performance graphene materials with organic minerals and gives deep insight into simultaneous sorption of metal ions, which can be potentially extended to other multiple pollutants.

The development of efficient adsorbents for heavy metal pollution, especially five toxic heavy metals, has attracted great research interest. Polymer-based adsorbents have aroused research value for their abundant functional groups and high porosity to the ability to capture metal ions. We designed a sulfhydryl-functionalized polymer microcomposite to take up Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II). The adsorption capacity achieved was 64.2 mg g–1 for Cr(VI), 44.9 mg g–1 for As(III), 35.5 mg g–1 for Cd(II), and 18.2 mg g–1 for Pb(II). Langmuir and Sips isotherm model is dominant for As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) adsorption. Pseudo-second-order kinetic models can better describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI), implying that chemisorption is accompanied by Cr(VI) adsorption. Cr(VI) simultaneous reduction to Cr(III) through the benzenoid amine oxidate pathway was the dominant mechanism, precipitation for Cd(II) adsorption was convinced, and chelation between As(III)/Pb(II) and─SH group and complexation between Pb(II) and C═O or benzene hydroxyl were a plausible mechanism for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption.

The mechanism from the molecular level and the selectivity for the removal of metal ions from aqueous has become a hotspot in current water treatment . In this study, a sulphydryl-modified hollow polymer adsorbent was designed with intrinsic amine and grafted sulphydryl groups for efficient uptake of Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) by taking advantage of their properties of abundant functional groups, discrete hollow chambers, and high porosity. Interestingly, the benzenoid amine/quinoid imine functional groups have a stronger affinity for Cr(VI) than Cd(II) or As(III) and Pb(II). The formation of approximately 65.7% Cr(III) indicates the redox reaction from Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The electron-donating comes from benzenoid amine and oxidized to quinoid imine or protonated oxidized nitrogen units (-N = + ) with Cr(VI) reduced to Cr(III) for the increase of more than double of quinoid imine and a new functional group of -N = + . Ion exchange between –COO - groups and As(III)/Cd(II), the chelation of –SH groups for Pb(II)/As(III) are plausible mechanisms.

In this study, a new metal-organic framework adsorbent (UIO-66-NH 2 @TA) which can efficiently and selectively capture lead ions was developed by functionalizing UIO-66-NH 2 with tannic acid (TA) by Michael addition reaction. The structural and morphological properties of the produced adsorbent, as well as its adsorption mechanism for Pb (II) were discussed. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb (II) was 475.78 mg/g at pH 5.0, which was significantly higher than the adsorption capacity of many adsorbents reported in the literature. In addition, the adsorption isotherms and kinetics conformed to the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model , respectively. The results indicated that the adsorptive behavior of the adsorbent mainly depended on the active sites on the surface of the adsorbents. The UIO-66-NH 2 @TA showed favorable selectivity toward Pb (II) against the interference of coexisting metal ions . It was found that the excellent Pb (II) removal performance of UIO-66-NH 2 @TA was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of physical adsorption and chemisorption . Moreover, the UIO-66-NH 2 @TA showed extraction efficiencies of 88.01%, 82.44%, 80.20% and 74.99% for Pb (II) with initial concentration of 100 mg/L in river water, sea water, peach juice drink, and grape juice, respectively. This work proved that the UIO-66-NH 2 @TA had a wide application prospect in the field of Pb (II) treatment.

Herein, a three-dimensional porous nanomaterials AuNPs-decorated polyaniline nanowire arrays/carbon nanotube (Au-PANI-array@CNT) was constructed by modified dilute polymerization and redox reaction. The Au-PANI-array@CNT exhibited a larger specific surface area (50.03 m 2 g −1 ) and abundant mesopores (average pore size: 19.6 nm), due to the vertical growth of PANI nanowire arrays on CNT. The Au-PANI-array@CNT composite with a three-dimensional interconnected porous structure exhibited abundant electroactive sites and high adsorption capacity, significantly enhancing the deposition and electrochemical reaction process of heavy metals. The AuNPs embedded on PANI nanowries can provide high catalytic activity and multidimensional electron transport channels, further improving the detection sensitivity. A sensing platform with ultra-high sensitivity (2091, 3890 μA μM −1 cm −2 ) and lower limit of detection (0.18, 0.15 nM) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) determination was developed based on the three-dimensional porous PANI composite. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism of Au-PANI-array@CNT with Cd(II) was explored by XPS and FTIR spectroscopy . The current response only decreased by 5% after being stored at room temperature for 2 months, indicating that the sensor has high reproducibility and stability. Finally, the analysis of drinking water samples verified the excellent practicability of the sensor for the simultaneous measurement of trace levels (nM) of Cd(II) and Pb(II).

Schiff base silica aerogels (SCA-X) were synthesized using amino-containing organosilanes and salicylic aldehyde as functional monomers with ethyl orthosilicate hydrolysis condensation as carrier. The influence of SCA-X on the adsorption of Pb (II) and Cu (II) under different adsorption conditions was evaluated, including the effect of solution pH, isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics and adsorption mechanism. The batch adsorption experiments showed that SCA2 had the optimum adsorption capacity for Pb (II) (357.1 mg/g) and Cu (II) (243.9 mg/g), leading to adsorption equilibrium within 120 min and 360 min, respectively. After six adsorption–desorption cycles, SCA2 still possessed satisfactory adsorption for Pb (II) and Cu (II), demonstrating the reusability of the SCA2 adsorbent material. Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process could be described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, adsorption isotherms were in accordance with the Langmuir model, indicative of monomolecular layer adsorption. Thermodynamics evaluation revealed the nature of the adsorption process was an endothermic spontaneous process. XPS analysis combined with DFT calculations confirmed that the interaction mechanism between SCA2 and Pb (II) occurred through the coordination between the nitrogen atom donor in the Schiff base and the oxygen atom donor in the benzene ring, while the interaction between SCA2 and Cu (II) occurred mainly through the coordination between the nitrogen atom in the Schiff base and Cu (II). Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was introduced to analyze the environmental impact of the SCA2 fabrication process and eco-friendly approaches were provided, which eventually provided theoretical evidence for the application of as-prepared material in the handling of heavy metal effluents.

Heavy metal ions in water, cosmetics, and arable land have become a world-wide issue as they cause a variety of diseases and even death to humans and animals when a certain level is exceeded. Therefore, it is necessary to development a new kind of sensor material for the determination of heavy metal ions. In this paper, we present an electrochemical sensor based on composite material (thiol(–SH) grafted poly(3,4-proplenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT(MeSH)2)/ porous silicon spheres (Si) composite, denoted as PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si) from the incorporation of thiol(–SH) grafted poly(3,4-proplenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT(MeSH)2) with porous silicon spheres (Si) for the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions (Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II)). The PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si composite was synthesized via a chemical oxidative polymerization method. The structure and morphology of PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si composite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET). Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si was evaluated by detecting of Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II) ions using the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method. The relationship between structural properties and the electrochemical performance was systematically studied. The results showed that the entry of two thiol-based chains to the monomer unit resulted in an increase in electrochemical sensitivity in PProDOT(MeSH)2,which was related to the interaction between thiol group(-SH) and heavy metal ions. And, the combination of PProDOT(MeSH)2with Si could improve the electrocatalytic efficiency of the electrode material. The PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si/GCE exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity in the rage of 0.04 to 2.8, 0.024 to 2.8, and 0.16 to 3.2 μM with the detection limit of 0.00575, 0.0027, and 0.0017 µM toward Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II), respectively. The interference studies demonstrated that the PProDOT(MeSH)2@Si/GCE possessed a low mutual interference and high selectivity for simultaneous detection of Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II) ions. Keywords:thiol(–SH), poly(3,4-proplenedioxythiophene), porous silicon spheres;electrochemical sensor;heavy metal ions;simultaneous detection

The corn straw-converted hydrochar (HC), HC modified with H 3 PO 4 (H 3 PO 4 -HC), and HC modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) (PEI-HC) were prepared in this study for Pb(II) adsorption from an aqueous solution. SEM, TEM , XRD , Raman, FT-IR, BET and XPS analysis were carried out for the characterization of the as-obtained samples, and the Pb(II) adsorption capacities and mechanism onto them were analyzed. The results of SEM show that PEI loading on HC could cover the aggregates of the carbon spheres, altering the microscopic characteristic of HC. The lower I D / I G value of H 3 PO 4 -HC and no residual cellulose provided evidence to H 3 PO 4 -HC suffering a more thoroughly carbonization process than the original HC or PEI-HC. Both H 3 PO 4 -HC and PEI-HC exhibited excellent performance for Pb(II) adsorption with q max of 353.4 mg g −1 and 214.0 mg g −1 , respectively, which are significantly higher than the adsorption capacity (32.67 mg g −1 ) of the original HC. And the dominant Pb(II) adsorption process onto the as-fabricated HCs was attributed to chemical reaction revealed by the results of XPS analysis. After the adsorption process, the binding energies of C O and C O or NH / NH 2 and N in the as-prepared HCs have been shifted, confirming that the surface functional groups had taken part in the Pb(II) adsorption. The main adsorption mechanisms of Pb(II) on H 3 PO 4 -HC are the ions exchange and hydrogen bonding , and that of PEI-HC are the coordination bonding and hydrogen bonding. This study put forward in-depth views on the adsorption mechanism of the modified HCs. This facilitates the development of new and efficient adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals from water.

A new multifunctional β-cyclodextrin-sodium xanthogenate (β-CDX) was successfully synthesized by a one-step process and applied to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The characteristics and chelation mechanisms of β-CDX were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the influences of various operating parameters such as pH (lime dosage), the order of the additions, β-CDX dosage, and the initial concentration of Pb(II) on the removal capacity of β-CDX and the characteristics of the products were systematically evaluated. The results demonstrated that the optimal removal effect for Pb(II) was achieved when β-CDX was used rather than using lime alone. In addition, it was more effective to add β-CDX to the working solutions prior to adding the lime than adding β-CDX after the lime. The use of 0.05 g/L of β-CDX was effective for the removal of Pb(II) according to the residual concentration when the initial concentration was 100 mg/L at different pH values. The maximum removal rate of the Pb(II) ions was 98% for all initial concentrations and the products were larger (size = 137.9 μm) and looser ( D f = 1.73) at an optimum pH range from 9 to 12. The characterization results confirmed that the RC(S)SNa in the β-CDX was the main contributor to the chelation of the Pb(II). These properties of β-CDX make it a promising compound for the treatment of wastewater contaminated by hazardous metal ions.

This study quantified the complex stability constants of sulfamethazine (SMT) with cadmium (Cd 2+ ) and lead (Pb 2+ ) under different pH conditions. The UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used for acquiring the complexation data. Results showed that the complex stability constants of SMT with cadmium (Cd 2+ ) and lead (Pb 2+ ) increased as a function of the solution pH. In the investigated pH range, Cd 2+ showed stronger complex affinity with SMT than Pb 2+ . It appeared that cation - π interactions might dominate the complex between SMT with Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ at acid environment, and the covalent bonding might play a major role at neutral environment. Batch adsorption equilibrium experiment showed that the sorption capacity of Cd 2+ on goethite increased from 3.83 to 7.64 mg/g along with the addition of 1 mg/L SMT, indicating SMT can impede the transportation of Cd. In general, this study worked out the complexation constants and clarified the complexation mechanism between SMT with lead and cadmium, while sorption experiment indicated that sorption of Cd onto goethite was enhanced with SMT.
