Structural evolution of activated carbon supported nano-zero-valent iron and performance impacts on Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution

Xuejiao Liu,Beibei Pan,Zhiwei Li,Poonnawit Hanphaiboon,Yin Wang

Activated carbon supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI/AC) has been proved to be versatile for removing several kinds of contaminants from environmental matrix. The structural properties of NZVI/AC composites play a crucial role in determining both the decontamination efficiency and adsorption capacity of these materials. However, studies relevant to structural evolution and corresponding manipulation routes for AC-supported NZVI are still scarce. Herein, AC-supported NZVI were prepared under different synthesis conditions followed by characterizing them using several techniques and evaluating their reactivity toward heavy metal in aqueous solution. NZVI/AC synthesized under different molecular weight of PEG and m AC :m Fe possessed a similar removal efficiencies of Pb(II) from aqueous solution, meanwhile, NZVI/AC synthesized with a suitably prolonged time at n BH4 :n Fe = 8.0 exhibited obvious enhancement for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution. As for structural evolution of AC-supported NZVI, results show that the crystallization was more complete, the shape was converted from needle to sphere, the particle size was becoming smaller, the particle distribution was more homogeneous, the specific surface area was smaller, and the surface oxidation was lower as suitably increasing m AC :m Fe , n BH4 :n Fe , and reaction time. The size and density of iron precursor by complexation of PEG and Fe 2+ , and ratio of nuclei formation to growth values are essentially responsible for manipulating structure of AC-supported NZVI. Spherical AC-supported NZVI with higher iron content based on smaller particle size, uniform distribution, and lower surface oxidation in one is responsible for significant enhancement of Pb(II) removal rate and capacity thanks to higher surface reactivity, more accessible surface-active sites, and faster electron transfer from core to shell of iron. This study would provide a new insight into comprehending manipulation mechanism for the key structure of AC-supported NZVI composites for aquatic remediation.

Tunable coordination-responsive metal-phenolic membranes for selective and efficient Pb(II) remediation with low-chemical regenerant in actual wastewaters

Zhanqi Liu,Manyu Zhang,Shuo Wang,Hui Qiu,Yaran Song,Qina Sun,Tifeng Jiao,Qingrui Zhang

Heavy metal contamination in industrial wastewater, particularly lead (Pb(II)), poses significant environmental and health challenges. Conventional membrane technologies, like nanofiltration and ultrafiltration, struggle with selectivity and separation recovery in complex wastewater streams. To address this, we present an advanced metal-phenolic network (MPN) membrane that leverages the tunable coordination chemistry of Tannic Acid (TA) and metal complexes to address these limitations. The TA-MPN membrane demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving 6–15 times higher selectivity for Pb(II) than commercial polyamide membranes, even in the presence of competing ions such as Cd(II), Zn(II), Cr(VI) and Ni(II). In electroplating wastewater applications, the membrane reduces Pb(II) levels to below 0.1 mg/L with a capacity of 80 L/m 2 and removal efficiency exceeding 95 %, meeting stringent GB21900-2008 standards. Furthermore, the membrane exhibits outstanding regenerability, maintaining consistent performance over 10 regeneration cycles using extremely low doses of 0.1 % HCl. An economic analysis reveals a preparation cost of 22.6 USD/m 2 and a treatment cost of 0.227 USD per ton of wastewater, demonstrating its cost-effectiveness. The findings establish the TA-MPN membrane as a scientifically robust solution for selective and cost-effective Pb(II) remediation and recovery, effectively addressing the limitations of conventional membranes while advancing scalable and sustainable technologies for heavy metal treatment.

Facile colorimetric sensor using oxidase-like activity of octahedral Ag2O particles for highly selective detection of Pb(II) in water

Lian Xia,Feng Luo,Xiaojuan Niu,Yue Tang,Yuangen Wu

Pb(II) is a prevalent heavy metal ion classified as a 2B carcinogen. Excessive intake of Pb(II) in the human body can damage the central nervous system, kidneys, liver, and immune system, leading to permanent brain damage, anemia, and cancer. Colorimetry can be applied to rapidly determine Pb(II) residues, but there are still many challenges in the accuracy and sensitivity of detection. Based on the inhibitory impact of Pb(II) on the oxidase-like activity of octahedral silver oxide (Ag 2 O), a colorimetric sensor with smartphone-assisted analysis for the Pb(II) detection was first developed. Herein, it has been found that Pb(II) can adsorb onto the surface of octahedral Ag 2 O, hindering the production of O 2 − in the reaction system. This ultimately results in the suppression of oxidase-like activity, leading to a lighter purple appearance of the colorimetric reaction solution. The sensor exhibits a high degree of sensitivity and a limit of detection (LOD) for Pb(II) was calculated as 2.2 μg L −1 . Hence, the developed colorimetric sensor with high sensitivity, excellent specificity, and high tolerance to sodium ions is hopeful to have practical applications in Pb(II) detection in environmental water samples. Moreover, the sensor will provide a novel strategy for heavy metal ion detection and other substances.

Click functionalization of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microspheres with triazole-4-carboxylic acid for the effective adsorption of Pb(II) ions

Shaojun Yuan,Jing Zhang,Zhenyi Yang,Shengwei Tang,Bin Liang,Simo O. Pehkonen

Chelating 1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylic acids were successfully introduced onto the cross-linked PGMA microsphere surfaces by the combination of ring-opening reactions and the click chemistry process between the alkynyl groups of propiolic acid (PA) and the epoxy groups on the surfaces of the PGMA microspheres. The resultant PA-conjugated PGMA microspheres were found to be an effective adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. Success in each functionalization step was ascertained by ATR-FTIR, XPS and SEM characterization. Batch and column adsorption experiments were performed to determine the adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics of Pb(II) ions on the as-synthesized microspheres. The Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacity for Pb(II) ions was found to be 69.41 mg g−1 at a solution pH of 5.0, together with the adsorption equilibrium being achieved within 60 min. The thermodynamic studies demonstrated an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process of Pb(II) ions on the PA-conjugated PGMA microspheres. Column adsorption studies revealed the decrease in the adsorption capacities of the breakthrough and exhaustion points with increasing flow rate. The postulated adsorption mechanism was attributed to the electrostatic interactions from carboxylic groups and chelation or coordination of Pb(II) ions from the triazole moieties, which was facilitated to form a pluralistic potential trap for Pb(II) ions, as confirmed by XPS characterization.

Simultaneous remediation of As(V), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution and soil using Fe/Ca-modified biochar

Yan Zhou,Wenhui Liu,Dandan Chen,Bangwei Liu,Ping Lu,Yiwei Zhang

A novel Fe/Ca-modified biochar (BC) derived from corn stalk was prepared in this study for the simultaneous adsorption and immobilization of arsenic, cadmium and lead in aqueous solution and soil, respectively. The adsorption experiment in aqueous solution indicated that 1Ca-Fe@BC exhibited excellent removal efficiency (R, %) towards arsenic (46.3%), cadmium (76.3%) and lead (93.6%). The presence of cadmium and lead could enhance the adsorption efficiency of arsenic by facilitating the formation of ternary complexes with it. Moreover, both cooperative and competitive effects occurred between cadmium and lead adsorption. When the distribution coefficient of cadmium and lead was equimolar, cooperative adsorption prevailed. However, when the distribution coefficient deviated from this balance, competitive adsorption dominated with a higher affinity for lead. The soil culture experiment demonstrated that the utilization of 1Ca-Fe@BC could enhance the stability of arsenic, cadmium and lead in soil by enhancing soil cation exchange capacity and pH while reducing dissolved organic carbon. The competitive and cooperative effects of arsenic, cadmium and lead in soil were consistent with those found in aqueous solution. The results showed that 1Ca-Fe@BC exhibited an excellent remediation efficiency for both arsenic, cadmium and lead-contaminated aqueous solution and soil.

Mn-Modified Biochar Composite for Efficient Adsorption of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from Water: Synthesis, Characterization, and Mechanistic Insights

Waqas Ahmed,Yunting Wang,Sehrish Ali,Fengyue Qin,Babar Usman,Weidong Li,Sajid Mehmood

Heavy metal pollution in water threatens ecosystems and human health, necessitating efficient, low-cost, and sustainable remediation technologies. A manganese-modified bamboo biochar (Mn-BC) was synthesized via impregnation of raw biochar in KMnO4followed by pyrolysis at 500 °C, and its adsorption ability was systematically evaluated for Pb(II) and Cr(VI) removal through batch adsorption experiments investigating the effects of solution pH (2–9), adsorbent dosage (0.1–0.9 g in 20 mL), contact time (0–50 min), initial metal concentration (20–100 mg L−1), and temperature (25–50 °C). SEM/TEM-EDS and XRD confirmed successful Mn incorporation as MnOxphases, while textural analysis showed improved porosity after modification, with the BET surface area and total pore volume increasing from 77.28 m2g−1to 123.51 m2g−1and from 0.041 cm3g−1to 0.063 cm3g−1, respectively. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated strong pH dependence, with optimum removal at pH 8 for Pb(II) (91.87%) and pH 5 for Cr(VI) (88.2%). Adsorption was rapid within the first 30 min and reached equilibrium. A pseudo-second-order (PSO) model provided the best kinetic description (R2= 0.99) with calculated qevalues of 19.98 mg g−1for Pb(II) and 19.13 mg g−1for Cr(VI). Isotherm analysis yielded Langmuir monolayer capacities of 37.24 mg g−1(Pb(II)) and 16.39 mg g−1(Cr(VI)), with Pb(II) better described by Freundlich behavior and Cr(VI) closely fitting Langmuir assumptions. Thermodynamic results indicated endothermic adsorption (ΔH° = 41.98 and 29.67 kJ mol−1for Pb(II) and Cr(VI)) and increased interfacial randomness (ΔS°), with adsorption becoming more favorable at higher temperature (maximum removal at 50 °C: 93.21% Pb(II), 87.37% Cr(VI)). Mn-BC maintained >60% efficiency after five regeneration cycles. Mechanistically, Pb(II) removal was primarily governed by ion exchange and surface complexation, whereas Cr(VI) removal involved electrostatic attraction, partial reduction to Cr(III), and subsequent complexation on oxygenated and Mn–O sites. Overall, these findings demonstrate that Mn-BC is a practical, reusable, and competitive adsorbent for the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from wastewater, supporting sustainable water treatment strategies.

Salicylic acid-modified defective NH2-MIL-125/sodium alginate composite aerogel beads for enhanced Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal

Bihe Chen,Ruoshan Yang,Mengyang Li,Yajing Niu,Jinyao Hu,Yingying Wang,Wenzhi Tang,Jingbo Zhou,Zhonghong Li

The threat of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in water demands advanced adsorbents. While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated great potential for heavy metal ions adsorption, their microporous nature and powdery form limit practicality. Thus, we engineered a sodium alginate composite aerogel bead loaded with salicylic acid-modified defective NH 2 -MIL-125, for the efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. By adjusting the solvent volume ratio to regulate the crystal morphology and introducing salicylic acid as a fragmented ligand to compete with NH 2 -BDC to coordinate with Ti-oxo clusters, a defective Ti-MOFs with mesoporous structure (pore size increased from 2.30 to 8.93 nm) and abundant active sites was successfully developed. Further integration with sodium alginate formed millimeter-scale aerogel beads, improving the reusability and enhancing adsorption performance: the maximum adsorption capacities of 428.01 mg g −1 for Pb(II) and 179.67 mg g −1 for Cd(II), respectively. The adsorption process, described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Sips isotherm models, is driven by multilayer chemical adsorption via electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and coordination reactions with −COOH, −NH 2 and −OH groups. The beads also exhibit excellent selectivity and reusability, maintaining high efficiency of ∼97 % for Pb(II) over 5 cycles. This work provides a promising strategy for designing high-performance and recyclable adsorbents for adsorbing heavy metal ions from water.

Co-transport of Pb(II) and oxygen-content-controllable graphene oxide from electron-beam-irradiated graphite in saturated porous media

Yanji Jiang,Xianqiang Yin,Duo Guan,Tao Jing,Huimin Sun,Nong Wang,Jing Bai

It is essential to investigate the role of the surface oxygen content of graphene oxide (GO) in transport processes. In this study, GO was prepared using flake graphite with different radiation doses. The effects of the flow rate and ionic strength (IS) on the migration and co-transport of GO and Pb(II) ions were investigated via laboratory packed-column experiments. The experimental results showed that the mobility of GO in saturated porous media decreased with increasing flow rate. Further, the mobility of GO with a radiation dose of 18 kGy was lower than that of GOs with other radiation doses for an IS below 0.01 M. Regarding the co-transport of irradiated GO and Pb(II) in porous media, the greater the radiation dose, the stronger was the ability of GO to promote Pb(II) transport. The surface oxygen content promoted the ability of GO to remove Pb(II). However, radiation doses exceeding a certain range inhibited the release of Pb(II). The transport of GO in saturated porous media was successfully simulated with the advection–dispersion–reaction (ADR) equation. This study is expected to provide a new perspective on the potential risks of GO due to surface changes during its transport in the environment.

A “turn-on” fluorometric aptasensor for simultaneous detection of Hg(II) and Pb(II) in fruits and vegetables after digestion

Jiangxiong Zhu,Hao Yin,Yidong Xin,Lumei Wang,Xueqing Geng,Haiyun Zhao,Yun Deng

A novel structure-switching “turn-on” fluorometric aptasensor was developed for simultaneous detection of Hg(II) and Pb(II) in grapes, broccoli, and cabbage. The sensing mechanism utilizes fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between a FAM-labeled aptamer (FAM-Apt) and a BHQ1-labeled complementary strand (CS-BHQ1). In the absence of target ions, FAM-Apt and CS- BHQ1 bind through complementary base pairing, bringing FAM and BHQ1 into close proximity, which induces FRET and quenches FAM’s fluorescence. Target ion binding induces a conformational change in the FAM-Apt, disrupting FRET and restoring fluorescence. Optimized parameters include reagent addition sequence, Apt and CS concentrations, incubation times, buffer conditions, and salt concentrations. Under optimized conditions, the aptasensor achieved limits of detection (LODs) of 2.29   μg/L for Hg(II) and 0.24   μg/L for Pb(II), much lower than the regulatory limits for fruits and vegetables, and the limits of quantification (LOQ) for food samples were 6.02   μg/kg and 2.07   μg/kg, respectively. Furthermore, the constructed aptasensor could rapidly complete detection within 22.5   min and demonstrated high selectivity against interfering ions. Spiked sample recoveries ranged from 98.07-104.12% for Hg(II) and 89.23-105.46% for Pb(II), with relative standard deviations of 0.95-5.64% and 1.21-14.53%, respectively. This aptasensor provides a sensitive, rapid, and cost-effective alternative to conventional detection methods.

Characterization of cellulose-based electrospun nanofiber membrane and its adsorptive behaviours using Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) as models

Xiang Ting,Zhang ZuLei,Liu HaiQing,Yin ZhengZhi,Li Lei,Liu XiaoMing

Nanofiber membranes from the composite of cellulose acetate/polyvinylpyrrolidone were prepared using electrospinning technique. After treated with water and alcoholic KOH to remove partially polyvinylpyrrolidone and deacetylate the cellulose acetate, the membranes were further functionalized with thiol groups using thioglycolic acid. Related materials were characterized using infrared and thermogravimetric analysis. And the results showed that the membranes were success of functionalisation. Then the nanofiber membranes were used in the sorption-desorption process. The effects of pH, contacting time and adsorption capacity of nanofiber membranes were studied against Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. And the maximum adsorption capacities of Pb (II), Cu (II), and Cd (II) ions were estimated at 30.96, 19.63, 34.70 mg g −1 . Our results suggested that the adsorption behaviour of metal ions could be described using Langmuir model. Their adsorption kinetics was in agreement with the model of pseudo-second order, suggesting chemical adsorption as the rate-limiting step of the adsorption mechanism. The durability of the thiol-functionalized cellulose nanofiber membranes was also evaluated by repetitive adsorption-desorption.

Sulfhydryl-Functionalized Amino Group Polymer Microcomposites toward Efficient Adsorption of Aqueous Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II)

Yueyang Wang,Weiwei Lu,Fangfen Jing,Mingzhu Jin,Xinyang He,Yuchen Xue,Yajun Hu,Rongtai Yu

The development of efficient adsorbents for heavy metal pollution, especially five toxic heavy metals, has attracted great research interest. Polymer-based adsorbents have aroused research value for their abundant functional groups and high porosity to the ability to capture metal ions. We designed a sulfhydryl-functionalized polymer microcomposite to take up Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II). The adsorption capacity achieved was 64.2 mg g–1 for Cr(VI), 44.9 mg g–1 for As(III), 35.5 mg g–1 for Cd(II), and 18.2 mg g–1 for Pb(II). Langmuir and Sips isotherm model is dominant for As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) adsorption. Pseudo-second-order kinetic models can better describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI), implying that chemisorption is accompanied by Cr(VI) adsorption. Cr(VI) simultaneous reduction to Cr(III) through the benzenoid amine oxidate pathway was the dominant mechanism, precipitation for Cd(II) adsorption was convinced, and chelation between As(III)/Pb(II) and─SH group and complexation between Pb(II) and C═O or benzene hydroxyl were a plausible mechanism for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption.

Recognizing adsorption of aqueous Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions by amino groups hollow polymer adsorbent

Yueyang Wang,Mingzhu Jin,Weiwei Lu,Fangfen Jing,Xinyang He,Jianchao Xie,Rongtai Yu

The mechanism from the molecular level and the selectivity for the removal of metal ions from aqueous has become a hotspot in current water treatment . In this study, a sulphydryl-modified hollow polymer adsorbent was designed with intrinsic amine and grafted sulphydryl groups for efficient uptake of Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) by taking advantage of their properties of abundant functional groups, discrete hollow chambers, and high porosity. Interestingly, the benzenoid amine/quinoid imine functional groups have a stronger affinity for Cr(VI) than Cd(II) or As(III) and Pb(II). The formation of approximately 65.7% Cr(III) indicates the redox reaction from Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The electron-donating comes from benzenoid amine and oxidized to quinoid imine or protonated oxidized nitrogen units (-N =  + ) with Cr(VI) reduced to Cr(III) for the increase of more than double of quinoid imine and a new functional group of -N =  + . Ion exchange between –COO - groups and As(III)/Cd(II), the chelation of –SH groups for Pb(II)/As(III) are plausible mechanisms.
