In this work, a sensitive DNAzyme-based electrochemical sensor had been developed for Pb 2+ detection with platinum nanoparticles decorated TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 composite as signal labels. The morphological and compositional properties of the PtNPs/TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 were examined by using transmission electron microscopy , X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The result showed that the shape of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanocrystals were the cubic, the average length ranged from 150 to 300 nm, and the PtNPs with about 3–4 nm in diameter were well dispersed on the surface of TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 . TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 were used as a “carrier” to load the PtNPs tracers as well as for Apt3 immobilization. In turn, the DNAzyme structure of Apt1 and Apt2 was immobilized on the gold electrode surface as the capture probes. Subsequently, DNAzyme modified electrodes reacted with target Pb 2+ and the Apt3/PtNPs/TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 composite were deposited on the electrode surface. The performance of the DNAzyme-based electrochemical sensor was tested by recording the electrocatalytic reduction current toward H 2 O 2 . Enhanced sensitivity was achieved by TiO 2 /α-Fe 2 O 3 nanocomposites as a nanocarrier in order to PtNPs at a high ratio. The DNAzyme-based electrochemical sensor described here exhibited excellent sensitivity and specificity for target ion. This work represented a promising potential for on-site testing Pb 2+ in real drinking water and serum sample analysis.

This study reported the development of a p–n heterojunction photoelectrochemical biosensor using a G-quadruplex as the recognition system. The n-type ZnO nanorods and p-type BiOI nanoflakes were combined to form the heterostructure by in situ growth of BiOI attributed to a simple impregnating-hydroxylation method. This simple p–n heterojunction fabrication method could facilitate the development of rapid and sensitive visible light activated PEC sensors. In this study, the ZnO/BiOI photoelectrode showed a rapid photocurrent decrease in the presence of Pb2+ due to the electron withdrawing effect of hemin which bound with the G-quadruplex/Pb2+ complex. This PEC biosensor exhibited a good response following the concentration of Pb2+ in the range from 10 to 100 μM.

The protective capacity of Se-containing protein hydrolysates with molecular weight below 1 kDa (SPHs-3), against Pb 2+ -induced damage in PC12 and RAW264.7 cells, was investigated in this study. The cell viability, levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) in cell were analyzed. Results showed that 100 μg/ml of SPHs-3 pretreatment could significantly increase cell viability by 24.9% and 23.0% in Pb 2+ -treated PC12 and RAW264.7 cells, respectively ( P < 0.01). The levels of ROS, NO, LDH and MDA were reduced by 32.2%, 68.2%, 79.7% and 73.7% in 100 μg/ml SPHs-3 pretreated PC12 cells, respectively ( P < 0.01). SPHs-3 pretreatment was also associated with increases of SOD activity and GSH content in cells. In conclusion, SPHs-3 could protect cells against Pb 2+ -induced cytotoxicity, suggesting that Se-enriched rice may be a feasible candidate to improve health standard of the Pb 2+ -pollution population.

This study aimed to investigate the protection mechanism of Se-containing protein hydrolysates (SPH) from Se-enriched rice on Pb 2+ -induced apoptosis in PC12 and RAW264.7 cells. Results showed that SPHs could alleviate Pb 2+ -induced morphological changes of apoptosis and the loss of mitochondrial transmembrane potential in both cell types. Besides this, SPHs could significantly reduce the activation of caspase-3, -8, -9 induced by Pb 2+ , reverse the Pb 2+ -induced upregulation of Bax and release of cytochrome C, and downregulate Bcl-2 in cells. HPLC-ICP-MS and SEC-HPLC assays showed that SPHs were low molecular weight peptides (229.4–534.9 Da), and the major Se species found in SPHs was SeMet. Taken together, these findings suggested that SPHs could possibly protect the cells against Pb 2+ -induced apoptosis via a caspase-dependent mitochondrial pathway, and the primary effective constituents in SPHs were SeMet and Se-containing peptides, suggesting that SPHs might be a novel potential candidate to improve the health of people with Se deficiency or in Pb-contaminated areas.

Hierarchical electrochemical sensors with specific recognition function have been widely applied for trace amounts detection of metal ions, showing great significance for monitoring environmental quality. Herein, a novel flower-like ytterbium benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate metal-organic framework (Yb-MOF-1) was prepared by a one-step solvothermal method, which was then cast on a glassy carbon electrode to construct a sensing platform. Compared to the traditional rod-like Yb-MOF-2 prepared at a lower pH (pH = 4.26), the Yb-MOF-1 assembled from ultrathin nanosheets has a large surface area (462.356 m²/g), showing simultaneous electrochemical detection performance towards Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ in aqueous solution with detection limits of 9.22, 1.69, 15.15 nM, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate its good anti-interference and repeatability. The reliable practical application of Yb-MOF-1 for Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ detection in real water samples shows good recovery rates ranging from 95.8 % to 103.5 %, proving the effective strategy in exploring efficient electrochemical sensing materials.

Surface engineering is an indispensable basic means to improve the properties of carbon nanomaterials and expand their application fields. Herein, tea residue was used as raw material to produce nano-biochar (NBC) by thermal decomposition method. Then the NBC was reshaped in situ on electrode surface to obtain electroreduced NBC (ErNBC) by cyclic voltammetry. After related material characterization, it is found that the properties of NBC are ideally reshaped after in situ electrochemical reduction, the size of NBC is reduced, the content of O element is increased, the hydrophilicity of NBC is enhanced, and the conductivity of NBC is improved. A model was constructed synchronously, and theoretical calculations were conducted to verify the changes in the material’s energy gap. Meanwhile, utilizing the structural properties of ErNBC, we develop an electrochemical sensor combined with machine learning for selective detection of Pb 2+ in actual water samples with a satisfactory recovery rate.

Aptamer conformations are susceptible to environmental conditions, which makes it difficult to achieve stable targets detection in complex environments with aptasensors. Imprinting strategy was proposed to immobilize the specific conformation of aptamers, aiming to enhance their recognition anti-interference. However, it is mechanistically unclear how the imprinted polymers affect aptamers' recognition, which limits application of the strategy. Herein, MD simulation was applied to explore the structural reason why nanogel imprinting improves binding affinity and selectivity of T30695 aptamer to Pb 2+ observed experimentally. Results show the imprinted polymers stabilize the domain-limited T30695 by noncovalent interactions. The coating process undergoes three evolution stages, finally achieving a polymer-aptamer-polymer sandwich-shaped conformation. Notably, it was found the polymers provide additional non-specific binding of Pb 2+ at acylamine group of acrylamide monomers, which accounts for the improved binding affinity with association constant K a 2.5 times larger. More importantly, imprinting enhances selectivity of aptamer to Pb 2+ by changing coordination mode of interfering ions (Ca 2+ , K + , Mg 2+ , NH 4 + and Cu 2+ ), which significantly destroys G-quadruplex conformation and thus its binding ability. This work revealed mechanistic effects of imprinting strategy on aptamers recognition at molecular level, which can guide rational design of high-performance aptamer-based biosensors applied in various detection areas.

Polydopamine (PDA) and MnO 2 have been proven to be promising adsorbents to capture Pb 2+ from wastewater. In this study, MnO 2 was in-situ loaded onto flexible electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers by the assistance of polydopamine coating (MnO 2 /PDA/PAN fibers) and the as-obtained MnO 2 /PDA/PAN fibers were utilized for the removal of Pb 2+ from water. The structure and chemical composition of MnO 2 /PDA/PAN fibers were characterized in detail. The results indicated that the PDA coating onto PAN fibers can’t be neglected for loading MnO 2 . This preparation of MnO 2 /PDA/PAN fibers could avoid the agglomeration of MnO 2 particles and make the adsorbent separate easily from the adsorption solution. The adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process toward Pb 2+ by MnO 2 /PDA/PAN fibers followed pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. In comparison with PDA/PAN fibers and MnO 2 /PAN fibers, MnO 2 /PDA/PAN fibers showed higher Pb 2+ adsorption capacity. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir model was 185.19 mg/g, which is higher than most of the reported PDA or MnO 2 based Pb 2+ adsorbents. The adsorption toward Pb 2+ by MnO 2 /PDA/PAN fibers still maintained stability after five adsorption/desorption cycles. In addition, the fiber adsorbent could also adsorb Pb 2+ from real industrial effluent with removal efficiency above 95%. This work indicates that MnO 2 /PDA/PAN fibers have great potential to be used as effective adsorbents for practical Pb 2+ removal.

Heavy metal pollution, particularly Pb 2+ , poses a severe threat to human survival and ecosystem health due to its detrimental effects on organisms. Therefore, evaluating the concentration of Pb 2+ in the environment can help mitigate these risks in advance. In this study, Cu nanoparticles (Cu NPs) modified 2D Cu-Metal-organic frameworks (Cu(NPs)/Cu-MOFs@ITO) are prepared and loaded onto indium tin oxide (ITO) glass by an electrophoretic method to produce an electrochemical sensor (ECS) for Pb 2+ . Cu(NPs)/Cu-MOF-B was synthesized by a simple solvothermal method and characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM , Raman, FT-IR and other methods to analyze the crystal structure, molecular structure and microstructure. The Cu NPs improve the electron transfer ability, and the abundant surface amino groups of Cu-MOF can be used to bind Pb 2+ characterized by CVs and EISs. The excellent energy positions of valence and conduction bands of Cu(NPs)/Cu-MOF facilitate the electron migration in oxidation and reduction of Pb 2+ analyzed by XPS, Mott-Schottky and UV–vis absorption curves. The limit of detection (LOD) reaches 0.065 μM and the sensitivity reaches 99.04 μA μM -1 cm -2 . The Cu(NPs)/Cu-MOFs@ITO ECS can be successfully applied to detect Pb 2+ in water environments with high sensitivity, selectivity and reproducibility, which provides a feasible method for detecting Pb 2+ .

The resource of trace lead (Pb 2+ ) from wastewater bearing intricate components is imperative for sustainable progression of the lead-acid battery industry. Herein, we fabricated a tannic acid-based covalent polymeric hydrogel (TA@PMAM) with antimicrobial properties and stability via facile Michael addition reaction. The incorporation of tannic acid (TA) through robust covalent bond leads to a stable porous 3D covalent polymer network with almost no loss of mechanical properties even after 20 compression cycles. Batch adsorption experiments of TA@PMAM revealed an extraordinary adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ (Qe =196.6 mg/g), achieving 87.2 % of Pb 2+ adsorption within the first 5 min owing to porous structure, numerous adsorption sites and good hydrophilicity. Moreover, TA@PMAM demonstrated a strong affinity for Pb 2+ in the presence of the interfere metal ions (Cu 2+ , Co 2+ , Mn 2+ etc .) due to the carbonyl and phenolic hydroxyl that can specifically pair with Pb 2+ . Stable adsorption properties of TA@PMAM were confirmed in fixed bed column adsorption experiment using lead-acid batteries wastewater, retaining 79.56 % of initial adsorption capacity even after 10 times’ reuse. Besides, TA@PMAM possesses a broad spectrum of antimicrobial properties. This study sheds novel light on the design and fabrication of adsorbent, which holds great potential for commercialization in recovering lead from battery industrial wastewater.

Electronic-grade isopropyl alcohol is widely utilized in the cleaning of semiconductors and microelectronic components. Removing ions like Pb2+ is crucial since the presence of impurities may cause degradation of electronics, increased failure rates, and short circuits. Membrane materials offer a number of advantages in the field of adsorption separation; however, the lack of adsorption sites results in limited adsorption capacity. In the current work, guanidino-grafted NH2-MIL-101(Fe) was incorporated into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to prepare MOF/PVDF mixed matrix membranes (NM/PVDF) for the removal of Pb2+ from isopropanol. Benefiting from the larger specific surface area and more lone electron pairs in the guanidine group, the Pb2+ adsorption capacity of the as-prepared NM/PVDF membrane was 29.4458 mg/g, which was higher than that of the NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/PVDF membrane (20.9306 mg/g) and the pure PVDF membrane (6.7324 mg/g). The NM/PVDF membrane was able to reduce the concentration of Pb2+ from 500 to 86.73 ppb. This work highlights the potential of guanidine-grafted Fe-based MOFs/PVDF membranes as adsorbents for acquisition of electronic-grade solvents.
