Urine Metabolic Profiling for Rapid Lung Cancer Screening: A Strategy Combining Rh-Doped SrTiO3-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry and Machine Learning

Ke Jia,Yawei Wang,Lixia Jiang,Mi Lai,Wenlan Liu,Liping Wang,Huihui Liu,Xiaohua Cao,Yuze Li,Zongxiu Nie

Lung cancer ranks among the cancers with the highest global incidence rates and mortality. Swift and extensive screening is crucial for the early-stage diagnosis of lung cancer. Laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) possesses clear advantages over traditional analytical methods for large-scale analysis due to its unique features, such as simple sample processing, rapid speed, and high-throughput performance. As n-type semiconductors, titanate-based perovskite materials can generate charge carriers under ultraviolet light irradiation, providing the capability for use as an LDI-MS substrate. In this study, we employ Rh-doped SrTiO3 (STO/Rh)-assisted LDI-MS combined with machine learning to establish a method for urine-based lung cancer screening. We directly analyzed urine metabolites from lung cancer patients (LCs), pneumonia patients (PNs), and healthy controls (HCs) without employing any pretreatment. Through the integration of machine learning, LCs are successfully distinguished from HCs and PNs, achieving impressive area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.940 for LCs vs HCs and 0.864 for LCs vs PNs. Furthermore, we identified 10 metabolites with significantly altered levels in LCs, leading to the discovery of related pathways through metabolic enrichment analysis. These results suggest the potential of this method for rapidly distinguishing LCs in clinical applications and promoting precision medicine.

The BiOBr/PVDF film prepared by in situ deposition and phase transformation has high piezo-photocatalytic performance for efficient degradation of Rh B

Zhou Hengqing,Li Xiao,Gao Guoqi,Sun Huajun,Liu Xiaofang

BiOBr/PVDF composite films with different precursor doping amounts were successfully prepared by in situ deposition phase conversion technology. The physicochemical properties of the composite films were analyzed in detail, and their piezoelectric-photocatalytic performance was systematically investigated. The experimental results showed that BP-0.8 (with a doping amount of 0.8 mmol for the BiOBr precursor) exhibited the best catalytic performance. Under the synergistic effect of visible light irradiation and ultrasonic vibration, the degradation rate of BP-0.8 for 50 mL of 40 mg/L Rhodamine B (Rh B) solution within 60 min could reach 96.73%, and the apparent reaction rate constant (k) of this sample was 0.06198 min⁻ 1 . It was 3.81 times and 27.06 times that of photocatalysis alone and piezoelectric catalysis alone, respectively. The radical capture experiment proved that the main active groups involved in the reaction were h⁺ and ·OH, and the mechanism of piezoelectric photocatalysis of BiOBr/PVDF composite thin films was proposed. In addition, compared with powder catalysts, flexible BiOBr/PVDF membranes were easier to recycle, did not require complex treatment, and still maintained good catalytic activity after ten cycles of testing. This work demonstrated the contribution of the piezoelectric effect to photocatalytic water purification and provided a promising strategy to utilize solar and mechanical energy.

Mechanistic investigation of quercetin (an active component of RAS-RH) in modulating radiation-induced coronary microvascular dysfunction via the TCs-ECs crosstalk pathway

Jiang Hugang,Liu Ai,Guo Zeao,Ren Chunzhen,Lin Wenyan,Liu Kai,Zhao Xinke,Li Yingdong

Background Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction (CMVD), a prevalent comorbidity of various cardiovascular diseases, may contribute to myocardial cell ischemic necrosis. The loss of microvessels—driven by endothelial cells (ECs) apoptosis—is the core pathological hallmarks of CMVD. Our previous studies have established that RAS-RH ( Angelica sinensis and Astragalus membranaceus ultrafiltrate) promotes angiogenesis and improves cardiac perfusion. However, its underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Purpose This study aimed to elucidate the key mechanism by which quercetin, the primary active component of RAS-RH, modulates radiation-induced ECs apoptosis. Methods Through the integration of network pharmacology and transcriptomics, we identified potential active components of RAS-RH and their key targets involved in regulating the telocytes-endothelial cell (TCs-ECs) crosstalk pathway underlying CMVD. These predictions were further validated using in vitro cellular models via flow cytometry, western blot, wound-healing assays, in situ hybridization, immunofluorescence staining, and EdU proliferation assays. Results Consistent with our predictions, experimental results demonstrated that quercetin (the primary active component of RAS-RH) significantly upregulated the expression of HIF-1α and miRNA-126 in TCs ( P  < 0.01) and enhanced miRNA-126 paracrine secretion. Through this paracrine mechanism, quercetin downregulated the expression of Cypd, ANT, F1F0-ATPase, and VDAC in ECs ( P  < 0.01), inhibited the reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and ECs apoptosis induced by excessive mPTP opening. Collectively, these effects enhanced ECs proliferation, migration, and tube formation capacity, ultimately promoting angiogenesis. Conclusion These results collectively demonstrate that quercetin, the primary active component of RAS-RH, suppresses excessive mPTP activation and apoptosis while stimulating ECs migration and tube formation. This occurs via upregulating HIF-1α and miRNA-126 expression in TCs and enhancing miRNA-126 paracrine to ECs, positioning the TCs-ECs crosstalk mechanism as a promising novel therapeutic target for intervening in coronary microcirculation dysfunction.

Facile Synthesis of a Novel Heterogeneous Rh/COF Catalyst and Its Application in Tandem Selective Transfer Hydrogenation and Monomethylation of Nitro Compounds with Methanol

Mingyue Zhang,Jianguo Liu,Bo Yang,Longlong Ma,Nan Wang,Xiuzhi Wei

The development of transition-metal heterogeneous catalysts for economical and effective synthesis of N-methylamine, especially for the monomethylation of amines, is still challenging. Herein, two Rh-supported covalent organic framework (COF) heterogeneous catalysts Rh/MelCOF were facile-synthesized by a Schiff base reaction using melamine as a precursor, and, for the first time, it was successfully applied to the effective and high selective tandem reaction of transfer hydrogenation and monomethylation of nitroaromatic hydrocarbons, with methanol as a C1 and hydrogenation source. A series of nitroaromatic hydrocarbons, including heterocyclic or sterically hindered derivatives, can be well tolerated, and the catalyst could also be reused four times without losing significant reactivity. At the same time, the study of the Rh/MelCOF mechanism supports the hydrogen-borrowing mechanism and puts forward the reaction pathway of azobenzene as an intermediate, which is better than the hydrogen-transfer pathway from N-phenylhydroxylamine to aniline directly. This work expands the application of COF catalysts and provides an effective way to obtain mono-N-methylated amines from nitroaromatic hydrocarbons, as well as the detailed mechanism of Rh/COF-catalyzed tandem transfer hydrogenation and monomethylation of amines.

Successive preconcentration and mechanistic investigation of Au(III), Pd(II), Pt(IV) and Rh(III) via cloud point extraction using a functionalised ionic liquid

Qi Wu,Changfeng Zhao,Qinzhong Wang,Jing Liu

This study proposes the efficient separation of Au(III)/Pd(II)/Pt(IV)/Rh(III) through the 2-mercaptobenzothiazole-functionalised ionic liquid ([C6mim][2MBT]) using a cloud point extraction system. Direct cloud point extraction of Au(III) (about 99.9%) was realised without involving any functionalised ionic liquids. A significant enhancement of the Pd(II) extraction performance was found by adding rationally constructed [C6mim][2MBT]. Consequently, a fairly high extraction percentage of about 99.4% was obtained. However, further advancement of the proposed cloud point extraction showed that it could not be applied for the preconcentration of Pt(IV) and Rh(III) without adding stannous chloride, which plays a critical role in the segregation and could be adjusted by changing the hydrochloric acid concentration. Under the optimised conditions, the Rh(III) extraction process shows a high yield percentage (ca. 83.0%), where the majority of Pt(IV) was enriched in the aqueous phase. In addition, the underlying possible extraction mechanism was investigated using UV-vis, FT-IR and TEM measurements, which indicated that TX-114 acted as a solvent for the extracted metals. The developed procedure reveals efficient direct Au(III)/Pd(II)/Pt(IV)/Rh(III) separation using [C6mim][2MBT] via cloud point extraction.

Efficient detection of nitrite in water based on an Au/NiO/Rh trimetallic composite modified laser-induced graphene electrode prepared by one-step electrodeposition

Zeyu Liu,Xiaohan Shan,Qiang Xue,Yao Liu,Lin He,Haijiao Xie

In this study, we employed a straightforward and rapid one-step electrodeposition method to enhance modify an Au/NiO/Rh composite on laser-induced graphene (LIG) for nitrite (NO 2 – ) detection. We extensively characterized and tested the morphological composition and electrochemical properties of the electrode using scanning electron microscopy and other characterization techniques. To compare the electrochemical active surface areas of the electrode before and after modification, we conducted cyclic voltammetry experiments. Additionally, we confirmed the changes in electron transfer performance and adsorption energy of the modified electrode through by density functional theory calculations. The experimental results demonstrate that the combined modification of LIG with rhodium nanoparticles (RhNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) improves electron transport ability at the electrode interface and enhances the electrode's electrocatalytic performance. The incorporation of nickel oxide (NiO) also provides a larger reaction area and more active sites for NO 2 – detection. The synergistic effects of these three modified components significantly enhance NO 2 – detection at the electrode, surpassing the performance of the bimetallic modified electrode. Under optimized experimental conditions, the sensor exhibits a linear range of 1 μmol/L to 1 mmol/L and a detection limit of 0.3 μmol/L. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates excellent anti-interference and repeatability properties. We successfully applied the sensor for determination of NO 2 – in tap water, yielding satisfactory results. This research presents a promising strategy for the portable, sensitive, and in-situ detection of NO 2 – in water environments using metal-based electrochemical sensors.

Separation of Pt(IV), Pd(II), Ru(III), and Rh(III) from chloride medium using liquid–liquid extraction with mixed imidazolium-based ionic liquids

Yan Yan,Qi Wang,Zeyang Xiang,Yanzhao Yang

A reasonable project was presented for the extraction and separation of Pt(IV), Pd(II), Ru(III), and Rh(III) from the mixed imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) [C6mim]Cl, [C6mim][NTf2], and [C6mim][DDTC]. Pt(IV) was first separated from other three platinum group metals with a mixture of [C6mim]Cl and [C6mim][NTf2]. Then, separation of Pd(II) and Ru(III) from Rh(III) was realized by changing the concentration of [C6mim][DDTC]. Back-extraction of Pt(IV), Pd(II), and Ru(III) from loaded hydrophobic phase and the recovery of Rh(III) in aqueous phase were also investigated. Mechanisms between Pd(II)/Ru(III) and [C6mim][DDTC] were further explored using ultraviolet spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), the method of continuous variations, ab initio quantum chemical studies, and X-ray crystallographic analysis. The results afford more directions for extracting and separating metals by introducing devisable functionalized group into ILs.

Balancing the galvanic replacement and reduction kinetics for the general formation of bimetallic CuM (M = Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt) hollow nanostructures

Lin Han,Pengfei Wang,Hui Liu,Qiangqiang Tan,Jun Yang

Tailoring the internal structure and chemical composition of nanomaterials is an effective way to enhance their performance for a given application. Herein, we report a general wet-chemistry approach to produce copper (Cu)-based binary hollow nanostructures with well defined architectures and investigate their catalytic properties in electrochemical reactions. This strategy relies on the galvanic replacement between Cu seeds and noble metal precursors including ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), osmium (Os), iridium (Ir), and platinum (Pt) in oleylamine at an appropriate temperature, which is essential to balance the reduction kinetics of the noble metal precursors by oleylamine during their galvanic replacement with Cu seed particles. Typically, the bimetallic CuPt hollow nanostructures with polyhedral morphologies exhibit enhanced catalytic properties for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), while their spherical counterparts obtained at a relatively low temperature show high activity for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). In particular, we will also demonstrate a unique application of the CuRu hollow nanostructures in supercapacitors after converting them into binary metal oxides at elevated temperatures in air.

Promoted effect of alkalization on the catalytic performance of Rh/alk-Ti3C2X2 (XO, F) for the hydrodechlorination of chlorophenols in base-free aqueous medium

Mei Ming,Yanlin Ren,Min Hu,Yun Zhang,Ting Sun,Yuling Ma,Xiaojing Li,Weidong Jiang,Daojiang Gao,Jian Bi,Guangyin Fan

Exploring MXenes as supports for synthesis of highly efficient catalysts are extremely important for hydrodechlorination of chlorophenols because of the acute toxicity and strong potential bioaccumulation of chlorophenols. We reported a facile strategy to synthesize Rh nanoparticles deposited on 2D alk-Ti 3 C 2 X 2 (X   =   O, F) (alk-Ti 3 C 2 X 2 for short) MXene, which was prepared through the removal of the Al layers of Ti 3 AlC 2 and post-treatment by alkalization. Modifying the Ti 3 C 2 X 2 support by alkalization triggered the substitution of surface fluorine groups with surface oxygen species. The changes in the surface chemistry of alk-Ti 3 C 2 X 2 effectively prevented particle aggregation to form well-dispersed Rh nanoparticles in small sizes with relative high metal dispersion, thereafter improving the hydrogen uptake capacity of the catalyst. Consequently, the Rh/alk-Ti 3 C 2 X 2 catalyst significantly enhanced the catalytic performance for the HDC reaction, which could be assigned to the large number of active components from small Rh nanoparticles. This strategy provides a basis for investigating the use of MXenes as supports to synthesize well-defined metal nanoparticles in 2D layered structures for potential applications.

In situ growth of Rh nanoparticles with controlled sizes and dispersions on the cross-linked PVA–PEI nanofibers and their electrocatalytic properties towards H2O2

Han Zhu,Ming Zhang,ShengYing Cai,YingTing Cai,Pan Wang,ShiYong Bao,MeiLing Zou,MingLiang Du

A facile approach for the synthesis of uniform, small size and well-dispersed rhodium nanoparticles (RhNPs) on cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol–polyethyleneimine (PVA–PEI) nanofibers has been demonstrated. Various methods were firstly employed to cross-link PVA nanofibers and the cross-linked PVA–PEI nanofibers exhibited good water stability and porous structures after immersing in water for 72 h. Because of the strong chelate effects among the amine groups, hydroxyl groups and Rh3+ ions, uniform RhNPs with an average diameter of about 2.5 ± 0.2 nm can evenly and densely grow throughout the PVA–PEI nanofibers via an in situ reduction. Meanwhile, the better dispersion and smaller size of the RhNPs grown on the nanofibers in comparison with the pre-synthesized RhNPs directly deposited on the nanofibers exhibit the advantages of in situ reduction for size and dispersion control. The successful fabrication of the RhNPs/(PVA–PEI) nanofibers with various densities of well-dispersed RhNPs demonstrates that the strong chelate effects and stabilization of the PVA–PEI nanofibers also play an essential role in the size and dispersion control of RhNPs. The crystal structures, chemical bonding and interactions of the prepared nanofibers were verified using XPS and FTIR spectra and XRD patterns. These novel nanomaterials were fabricated as non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors and exhibit highly electrocatalytic activity towards H2O2.

Identifying the Metallic State of Rh Catalyst on Boron Nitride during Partial Oxidation of Methane by Using the Product Molecule as the Infrared Probe

Jikang Yao,Yuanjie Xu,Hua Yang,Zhuangzhuang Ren,Lizhi Wu,Yu Tang

The partial oxidation of methane (POM) is a promising method for converting methane to syngas. The transition metal supported on boron nitride (BN) has recently been studied as part of a catalog of emerging catalysts. However, the chemical state of the metal supported on BN during methane reforming is still in debate. In this work, we report a rhodium catalyst on boron nitride (Rh/BN) for the POM, with exceptional activity and long-term stability at 600 °C for 230 h. The Rh/BN catalyst was investigated by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformed spectroscopy (DRIFTS). As revealed by in situ DRIFTS, the infrared band (2020 cm−1) of the product molecule, CO, adsorbed on the Rh, as the probe confirms the metallic state of Rh during the POM reaction. In addition, the results of in situ DRIFTS indicate that the reactive gaseous environment would react with the catalyst to form B-OH and B-H, which synergistically boost the POM activity. Keywords:partial oxidation of methane;syngas;boron nitride;rhodium;DRIFTS

Construction of PVA hydrogel-based solar-driven interfacial distillation device and its performance research in selective adsorption of organic solvents and removal of Rh B

Yuzhe Cao,Xunkai Zhu,Zejuan Ni,Bo Ge,Wei Li,Guina Ren,Xiao Miao,Xin Shao,Cancan Liu

Freshwater has become a rare resource on account of population increase and environmental pollution. At present, most the solar-driven interfacial evaporators used for water polluted by organic solvents and dyes have an outstanding nature of clean water production due to their special design. However, its downside is that contaminants remaining in the residual polluted water cannot be removed. Herein, a device applied to water polluted by organic solvents and dyes is formed by a hydrogel-based interfacial evaporator (PVA hydrogel/CNTs) and non-wetting fabric. The photodegradation efficiency of the non-wetting fabric is 95.7% for Rh B dye after five cycles. Meanwhile, the organic solvents including toluene, cyclohexane and so on are cleared through the non-wetting fabric. Importantly, the device presents a clean water production rate of 1.73 kg·m −2 ·h −1 under 1 sun illumination and it has a freshwater produce rate of 1.63 kg·m −2 ·h −1 after 6 h of desalination experiments. Furthermore, the device displays the performance of salt resistance in a 3 h NaCl dissolution experiment. A new strategy is provided for interfacial water evaporation technology used for water dyed by organic solvents and dyes purification and has a great application potential.
