Highly Efficient Removal of Organic Pollutants with HCO3−-Enhanced Ru(III)/NaClO Process

Yuhan Zhang,Guilong Peng,Yuting Yan,Xukun Meng,Wenwen Gong

The design of efficient advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the presence of bicarbonate has long attracted considerable attention in the field of environmental catalysis. In this study, sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) as one of the most abundant substances in actual water, was introduced to a NaClO/Ru(III) system to enhance the removal of acid orange 7(AO7). NaHCO3could significantly improve the removal efficiency of the Ru(III)/NaClO process in HCO3−at a pH range of 6.9–10.0. Ru(V)=O was identified as a dominant reactive species involved in the degradation of pollutants in the NaHCO3/NaClO/Ru(III) system. HCO3−interacts with Ru(III) to generate Ru(III)-HCO3−, which enhances the activation performance of Ru(III) under neutral or alkaline conditions. The removal of AO7 was significantly enhanced with increasing NaHCO3concentration, and the rate constant increased more than 2-fold to 4-fold as NaHCO3concentrations increased from 0 to 100 mM at pH 6.9 and 8.5. This study proposed a novel strategy to enhance the Ru(III)/NaClO process with environmentally friendly inorganic ligands and highlights its potential applications in the removal of pollutants.

High stability of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution from Ru-WC/NC 0D-2D nanocomposites

Jindou Hu,Xiaoyan Lu,Guiling Ren,Xinhui Jiang,Junhong Li,Anjie Liu,Zhenjiang Lu,Jing Xie,Aize Hao,Yali Cao

Pt based noble metal catalysts are important and efficient electrocatalysts during hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the HER of Pt based noble metal catalysts have poor stability and high cost. Herein, Unique Ru loaded the tungsten carbide/nitrogen doped carbon (Ru-WC/NC) 0D-2D nanocomposites were fabricated by gas-phase reduction pyrolysis process to solve the problem of poor stability and high cost. Specifically, 0D WC-supported ultra-small Ru (∼2 nm) was anchored on nitrogen doped carbon nanosheets. Even with a remarkably low Ru loading of just 2.82 %, the developed catalyst achieves comparable high catalytic performance to that of a 20 % Pt/C catalyst and demonstrates superior stability. Under a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the Ru (2) -WC/NC catalyst shows an overpotential of 30 mV in acidic conditions and 51 mV in alkaline environments. Additionally, the overpotential of Ru (2) -WC/NC lower than that of commercially 20 % Pt/C at high current densities exceeding 50 mA cm −2 . The total potential of water splitting for the two-electrode system comprising Ru (2) -WC/NC with commercial ruthenium oxide was 1.56 V at 10mA cm −2 . Most importantly, the stability of Ru (2) -WC/NC is much better than that of Pt/C. Theoretical calculation results further revealed that the ΔG H* of Ru (2) -WC/NC catalyst could be reduced through synergistic interactions between Ru and WC, thereby optimizing the kinetics of HER. This study offers both theoretical insights and practical methodologies for the synthesis and evaluation of electrocatalysts modified with low loading of noble metals.

Highly Efficient Hydrogenation of Guaiacol over Ru/Al2O3-TiO2 Catalyst at Low Temperatures

Yumeng Song,Ping Chen,Hui Lou,Xiaoming Zheng,Xiangen Song

In this work, the highly efficient hydrogenation of guaiacol catalyzed by ruthenium supported on Al2O3-TiO2(Ru/Al2Ti1) at very mild conditions was carried out. At temperatures as low as 25 °C and 2 MPa H2, about 60% of guaiacol could be converted to 2-methoxycyclohexanol (MCH) with a selectivity as high as 94% on the Ru/Al2Ti1catalyst with an appropriate hydrogen pressure. At temperatures above 50 °C, almost all of the guaiacol could be converted with the catalyst of Ru/Al2Ti1, mainly into hydrogenated products such as MCH. The surprisingly efficient hydrogenation of guaiacol at low temperatures was most likely due to the ability of Ru particles loaded on the specific complex metal oxide carriers, particularly the reduction of the edge effect of Ru, to activate phenyl and hydrogen and reduce the competition of the dimethoxy process. These findings about the high activity of the Ru/Al2Ti1catalyst at nearly room temperature may be helpful to upgrading the industrial process of the pyrolysis bio-oils.

Kinetics insights into structure sensitivity of Ru catalyzed L-alanine hydrogenation to alaninol

Rui Song,Chang Yao,Wenhua Li,Nihong An,Yafeng Shen,Nina Fei,Xiaohu Ge,Yueqiang Cao,Xuezhi Duan,Xing-Gui Zhou

Hydrogenations achieved on supported metal catalysts are normally structure sensitive, and comprehensive understandings on such sensitivity are pivotal for gaining insights into the active sites as well as the design of catalysts. Herein, a serials of differently sized Ru nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotube (CNT) were prepared and employed as catalysts for L-alanine hydrogenation to examine the structure sensitivity of amino acid hydrogenation. The reaction rates for L-alanine conversion and the formation of alaninol are demonstrated to be strongly dependent on the sizes of Ru nanoparticles, highlighting the structure sensitivity of the L-alanine hydrogenation. The activation energies extracted from kinetics studies are insensitive to the sizes of Ru nanoparticles on the Ru catalysts sized ≥1.3 nm with similar electronic properties, pointing to a predominant type of active site for L-alanine hydrogenation. By further combining model calculations with the shape of Ru nanoparticles determined by transmission electron microscopy, the Ru(101) sites are identified as the dominant active sites for L-alanine conversion and alaninol formation, which is further rationalized by density functional theory calculations. The kinetics insights into such structure sensitivity are believed to be important for the design and optimization of catalysts for the reaction.

Na-Ru bimetallic functional sites promote photo-driven CO2 directed conversion into CH4

Yanduo Liu,Mengwei Li,Jianing Guo,Ge Jin,Yue Yin,Yu Cui,Tong Sun

Recently, there has been a significant increase in interest in using photocatalysis for the energy conversion of polluting gases. In this research, sodium and ruthenium bimetallic functional sites co-modified bismuth tungstate (Ru/Na-Bi 2 WO 6 ) nanoflower photocatalyst was synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The CO 2 reduction products on the Bi 2 WO 6 substrate were CO (1.66 μmol/g/h, 68 %) and CH 4 (0.78 μmol/g/h, 32 %). After optimization, a significant change in the CO 2 products of the Bi 2 WO 6 -based composite material was observed, with CO (0.61 μmol/g/h, 3.6 %) and CH 4 (16.1 μmol/g/h, 96.4 %). Results showed that the dominance of CH 4 as the main product in the Ru/Na-BWO system is attributed to the effective doping of Na, which generates impurity energy levels composed of oxygen vacancies, lowering the conduction band position of Bi 2 WO 6 , thereby suppressing CO generation, and enhancing CH 4 selectivity by changing the CO 2 activation pathway. The remarkable performance is ascribed to the synergized adsorption and activation of CO 2 by the tandem Na + sites and Ru 0 sites. Specifically, the doped Na + sites play a major role in promoting the adsorption CO 2 molecules, while the Ru 0 sites play a dominant role in facilitating the activation of the intermediates.

Crystal phase dependent hydrogen spillover effect in Ru/WO3 for hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis

Jiayu Xu,Fulin Yang,Xia Guo,Shuli Wang,Ligang Feng

Supported Ru nanoparticles with high utilization are promising for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but the effect of the crystal phase engineering of supports on their performance remains unclear. Here, the impact of the crystal phase of the support on the catalytic activity of Ru was probed by anchoring Ru nanoparticles onto precisely synthesized hexagonal (WO 3 -H), orthorhombic (WO 3 -O), and monoclinic (WO 3 -M) supports followed by thorough evaluation for HER. Among them, WO 3 -H demonstrated superior performance by providing enhanced Ru anchoring and uniform dispersion, maximizing active site availability. A critical finding is the small work function difference (Δ W F ) between Ru and WO 3 -H, which minimizes interfacial charge accumulation and facilitates efficient hydrogen spillover, thereby accelerating HER kinetics. In contrast, WO 3 -O and WO 3 -M exhibited larger Δ W F and less effective Ru dispersion, resulting in a larger hydrogen spillover barrier and suboptimal hydrogen adsorption/desorption dynamics. As a result, Ru/WO 3 -H exhibited the best performance, achieving an overpotential of 43.8 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 49.1 mV dec −1 . This work highlights the critical role of the crystal phase in optimizing the intrinsic catalytic activity of catalysts, offering new insights for designing efficient HER catalysts.

Dinuclear Tridentate Ru(II) Complex with Strong Near-Infrared Light-Triggered Anticancer Activity

Li Wei,Rajesh Kushwaha,Tumpa Sadhukhan,Haorui Wu,Anyi Dao,Zhishang Zhang,Haotu Zhu,Qiufang Gong,Jiaxi Ru,Chao Liang,Pingyu Zhang,Samya Banerjee,Huaiyi Huang

The design of the dinuclear Ru(II) complex (Ru2) with strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption properties has been reported for efficient anticancer phototherapy. Under 700 nm LED light excitation, Ru2 exhibited remarkable synergistic type I/II photosensitization ability and photocatalytic activity toward intracellular biomolecules. Ru2 showed impressive 700 nm light-triggered anticancer activity under normoxia and hypoxia compared with the clinically used photosensitizer Chlorin e6. The mechanistic studies showed that Ru2 induced intracellular redox imbalance and perturbed the energy metabolism and biosynthesis in A549 cancer cells. Overall, this work provides a new strategy for developing efficient metal-based complexes for anticancer phototherapy under NIR light.

Atomically dispersed Ru on flower-like In2O3 to boost CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

Mengyao Xu,Fei Liu,Shike Liu,Jun Ma,Mengqin Yao,Xiaodan Wang,Jianxin Cao

Metal-based catalysts are prevalent in the CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol owing to their remarkable catalytic activity. Herein, Ru/In 2 O 3 catalysts with different morphologies obtained by doping Ru into In 2 O 3 with irregular, rod-like, and flower-like morphologies are used for catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. Results indicate that the flower-like Ru/In 2 O 3 (Ru/In 2 O 3 -F) exhibits higher catalytic performance than Ru/In 2 O 3 with other morphologies, achieving a 12.9% CO 2 conversion, 74.02% methanol selectivity, and 671.36 mg MeOH ·h −1 ·g cat −1 methanol spatiotemporal yield. Furthermore, Ru/In 2 O 3 -F maintains its catalytic stability over 200 h at 5 MPa and 290 °C. The promotional effect mainly stems from the fact that electronic structure of Ru can be effectively adjusted by modulating the morphology of In 2 O 3 . The strong interaction between atomically dispersed Ru and In 2 O 3 -F enhances the structural stability of Ru, inhibiting the agglomeration of the catalyst during the reaction process. Furthermore, density-functional theory calculations reveal that highly dispersed Ru atoms not only perform efficient and rapid electronic gain and loss processes, facilitating the catalytic activation of H 2 into H intermediates. It also enables the generated reactive H to rapidly overflow to the surrounding In sites to participate in CO 2 reduction. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the development of high-performance catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation.

Electrochemiluminescence immunosensor for α-fetoprotein using Ru(bpy)32+-encapsulated liposome as labels

Haiyan Wang,Dongyan Sun,Zhian Tan,Wu Gong,Lun Wang

In this work, an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor for ultrasensitive detection of α-fetoprotein (AFP) was fabricated using Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -encapsulated liposome as the label and electrodeposited gold nanoparticles (GNPs) as the immobilizing support. Great signal amplification was achieved since liposome could encapsulate large amount of reporter molecules and GNPs could provide large active surface. Under optimized conditions, with sandwich type format, a linear range of AFP from 0.005 to 0.2   pg/mL and an extremely low detection limit of 0.001   pg/mL was obtained, much lower than that in previous reports. The proposed ECL immnuosensor showed high sensitivity, specificity, and good stability, which may open a new door to ultrasensitive detection of proteins in clinical analysis.

Photo-thermal coupling to enhance CO2 hydrogenation toward CH4 over Ru/MnO/Mn3O4

Zhai Jianxin,Xia Zhanghui,Zhou Baowen,Wu Haihong,Xue Teng,Chen Xiao,Jiao Jiapeng,Jia Shuaiqiang,He Mingyuan,Han Buxing

Upcycling of CO 2 into fuels by virtually unlimited solar energy provides an ultimate solution for addressing the substantial challenges of energy crisis and climate change. In this work, we report an efficient nanostructured Ru/MnO x catalyst composed of well-defined Ru/MnO/Mn 3 O 4 for photo-thermal catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation to CH 4 , which is the result of a combination of external heating and irradiation. Remarkably, under relatively mild conditions of 200 °C, a considerable CH 4 production rate of 166.7 mmol g −1 h −1 was achieved with a superior selectivity of 99.5% at CO 2 conversion of 66.8%. The correlative spectroscopic and theoretical investigations suggest that the yield of CH 4 is enhanced by coordinating photon energy with thermal energy to reduce the activation energy of reaction and promote formation of key intermediate COOH* species over the catalyst. This work opens up a new strategy for CO 2 hydrogenation toward CH 4 .

Rationally constructing hollow N-doped carbon supported Ru catalysts for enhanced hydrogenation catalysis

Tiantian Liu,Jing Li,Xiaorui Yan,Kairui Li,Wenhua Wang,Haisheng Wei

The availability of catalytic sites for contact with reactants is a key issue to improve the performance of a catalyst, where constructing hollow structured nanomaterials has been considered as an effective strategy. Here, an N-doped carbon supported Ru catalyst with an interior cavity was synthesized by etching a MOF-derived core–shell precursor, in which metal Ru can be highly dispersed in the porous shell. This catalyst shows 98.7% conversion and >99% selectivity towards p-chloroaniline in the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene, which is better than the corresponding supported catalyst. Moreover, it also displays excellent stability with 5 cycle runs and good substrate universality for the hydrogenation of extensive substituted nitroarenes. Various characterization techniques and control experiments reveal the advantage of the unique structure to promote the mass transport and adsorption of reactant molecules on Ru sites. This work provides a novel strategy to design an efficient Ru-based catalyst for chemoselective hydrogenation.

Robust Ru/Ce@Co Catalyst with an Optimized Support Structure for Propane Oxidation

Aiyong Wang,Jiajia Ding,Mingqi Li,Peiyao Song,Zhiyuan Zhao,Yanglong Guo,Yun Guo,Li Wang,Qiguang Dai,Wangcheng Zhan

Short carbon chain alkanes, as typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs), have molecular structural stability and low molecular polarity, leading to an enormous challenge in the catalytic oxidation of propane. Although Ru-based catalysts exhibit a surprisingly high activity for the catalytic oxidation of propane to CO2 and H2O, active RuOx species are partially oxidized and sintered during the oxidation reaction, leading to a decrease in catalytic activity and significantly inhibiting their application in industrial processes. Herein, the Ru/Ce@Co catalyst is synthesized with a specific structure, in which cerium dioxide is dispersed in a thin layer on the surface of Co3O4, and Ru nanoparticles fall preferentially on cerium oxide with high dispersity. Compared with the Ru/CeO2 and Ru/Co3O4 catalysts, the Ru/Ce@Co catalyst demonstrates excellent catalytic activity and stability for the oxidation of propane, even under severe operating conditions, such as recycling reaction, high space velocity, a certain degree of moisture, and high temperature. Benefiting from this particular structure, the Ru/Ce@Co (5:95) catalyst with more Ce3+ species leads to the Ru species being anchored more firmly on the CeO2 surface with a low-valent state and has a strong potential for adsorption and activation of propane and oxygen, which is beneficial for RuOx species with high activity and stability. This work provides a novel strategy for designing high-efficiency Ru-based catalysts for the catalytic combustion of short carbon alkanes.
