Wastewater is typically complicated with spilled oil, water soluble toxic dyes and microorganisms, making it hard to be processed and causing a significant threat to the environmental safety and human health. In this paper, we demonstrate a simple solution immersion method to obtain a multifunctional cellulose-based membrane (CBM) that possesses both superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 163° and superior functionalities including self-cleaning, oil–water separation, anti-biofouling, and photocatalytic degradation capabilities. The achievement of separation efficiency (96%), comparatively high flux (141 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and recyclable (7 times) oil/water separation performance is attributed to the robust superhydrophobicity enabled by the synergy of metal oxide (i.e., CuO) nanostructure coating and stearic acid (SA) modification. The superhydrophobic CBM also preferentially adsorbs organic dyes in aqueous solution, e.g., methylene blue (MB), promoting their efficient decomposition (about 70.3% of MB decomposed in 3 h) with high recyclability under UV irradiation. Most remarkably, the CBM exhibits superior anti-biofouling capability and persistently resists the algae adhesion in long duration (over 20 days), as a result of the self-cleaning ability as well as the antimicrobial property of CuO nanoparticles. Our finding here paves the way to use simple, cost-effective, environmentally safe, and reliable method to fabricate multifunctional materials for wastewater treatment in complex environments.

The thermal shrinkage of commercial polypropylene (PP) separator at high temperature seriously restricts the development of safe and stable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. To address such issue, herein, we present an interfacial engineering strategy by coating conductive polypyrrole (PPY) modified lithium-montmorillonite (PPY/Li-MMT) on the PP separator. The PPY/Li-MMT can service as an effective heat release layer to enhance the high-temperature stability of Li-S batteries. The engineered PP separator exhibits superior performance: it shows nearly no thermal shrinkage even up to 150 °C. Most importantly, the interface engineered separator has not be punctured during the hot piercing testing and the Li-S batteries deliver outstanding thermal stability even at 80 °C. In addition, the PPY/Li-MMT modified PP separator owns very high electrolyte uptake of 348.6%, large ionic conductivity of 3.63 mS cm −1 and stable performance over 600 cycles. This work provides an effective interfacial engineering strategy by coating PPY/Li-MMT interlayer to significantly improve the electrochemical performance and particularly the high-temperature stability of Li-S batteries.

Treatment of implant-associated infection is becoming more challenging, especially when bacterial biofilms form on the surface of the implants. Developing multi-mechanism antibacterial methods to combat bacterial biofilm infections by the synergistic effects are superior to those based on single modality due to avoiding the adverse effects arising from the latter. In this work, TiO 2 nanorod arrays in combination with irradiation with 808 near-infrared (NIR) light are proven to eradicate single specie biofilms by combining photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and physical killing of bacteria. The TiO 2 nanorod arrays possess efficient photothermal conversion ability and produce a small amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Physiologically, the combined actions of hyperthermia, ROS, and puncturing by nanorods give rise to excellent antibacterial properties on titanium requiring irradiation for only 15 min as demonstrated by our experiments conducted in vitro and in vivo . More importantly, bone biofilm infection is successfully treated efficiently by the synergistic antibacterial effects and at the same time, the TiO 2 nanorod arrays improve the new bone formation around implants. In this protocol, besides the biocompatible TiO 2 nanorod arrays, an extra photosensitizer is not needed and no other ions would be released. Our findings reveal a rapid bacteria-killing method based on the multiple synergetic antibacterial modalities with high biosafety that can be implemented in vivo and obviate the need for a second operation. The concept and antibacterial system described here have large clinical potential in orthopedic and dental applications.

To minimize the pesticide loss and enhance the efficiency of active ingredient utilization, the pH-responsive controlled-release pesticide with easy operation has been widely applied despite for its potential on bothering the non-target organisms while using acid or alkaline alone. To overcome that obstacle, we developed an environmentally safe herbicide particle with a smart wetting surface that can be regulated through consecutive base-acid stimuli to maintain stable pH levels. Herein, attapulgite (ATP) is mixed with glyphosate (Gly) initially and the resultants are coated by suspensions of phenylamine-modified ATP (ph-ATP) and amino silicon oil (ASO), ultimately the outmost polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) are constructed to acquire the smart herbicide (AG@ph-AA@PVP). The base may destroy the outmost PVP membrane, and the later acid treatment turns ph-AA layer gradually from hydrophobic to hydrophilic due to protonation of aniline groups, both of which allow water to invade further and promote Gly release. Therefore, the AG@ph-AA@PVP appears with excellent base-acid sensitivity and controlled-release performance, being demonstrating by the burst Gly release in water and significant weeds control efficiency in pot experiments. The interaction of the materials and the surface wettability were analyzed for explaining the controlled-release mechanism. Besides, AG@ph-AA@PVP possesses high environmental stability and good biosafety. This work develops a simple and feasible technology for environmental-safe and on-demand Gly delivery, assisting for advancement of sustainable and green agriculture.

Chemotherapy is the standard of care for bladder cancer after transurethral resection of the tumor. However, the rapid excretion of clinically used formulations of anticancer drugs make the common intravesical instillation chemotherapy far from efficient. Therefore, improving the muco-adhesion and penetrability of chemotherapeutic drugs became the key factors in the post-surgery treatment of superficial bladder cancers. Here, a reduction sensitive vehicle was developed to deliver the reactive oxygen species activated prodrug of gambogic acid for treatment of orthotopic bladder cancer. The positively charged chitosan can significantly enhance the adhesion and permeability of prodrug within the bladder wall. Moreover, by utilizing the different glutathione and ROS level between cancer cells and normal cells, the dual responsive nanoparticle can selectively and rapidly deliver drug in bladder cancer cells, and thus can significantly inhibit the proliferation of bladder cancer cells in an orthotopic superficial bladder cancer model without causing damage to normal cells. This work demonstrates that the smart prodrug nanomedicine may act as a promising drug-delivery system for local chemotherapy of bladder cancer with unprecedented clinical benefits.

Background: Oral insulin delivery is considered a revolutionary alternative to daily subcutaneous injection. However, the oral bioavailability of insulin is very low due to the poor oral absorption into blood circulation. Methods: To promote penetration across the intestinal epithelium and achieve enhanced and safe glucose-responsive oral insulin delivery, pH and H 2 O 2 dual-sensitive nanoparticles (NPs) were constructed. The NPs were loaded of glucose oxidase (GOx) and insulin by pH and H 2 O 2 dual-sensitive amphiphilic polymer incorporated with phenylboronic ester-conjugated poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and poly(carboxybetaine) (PCB). The dual-sensitive NPs were utilized for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) after oral administration. Results: The dual-sensitive NPs could enhance the transport of insulin across the intestinal epithelium into blood facilitated by zwitterionic PCB. By virtue of the generated low pH and high H 2 O 2 with GOx in hyperglycemic environment, the pH and H 2 O 2 dual-sensitive NPs were disassembled to achieve rapid and sustained release of insulin. After oral administration of the dual-sensitive NPs in enteric capsules into T1DM mouse model, the oral bioavailability of insulin reached 20.24%, and the NPs achieved hypoglycemic effect for a few hours longer than subcutaneously injected insulin. Importantly, the pH and H 2 O 2 dual-sensitive NPs could ameliorate the local decline of pH and rise of H 2 O 2 to avoid the toxic side effect. Conclusion: Therefore, this work would provide a promising platform for the enhanced and safe treatment of diabetes mellitus.

A PVA-PAA hydrogel encapsulates microemulsions for non-invasive mural smoke removal. • PVA:PAA 7:3 hydrogel has high strength (0.66 MPa, 700%) and 67% liquid retention. • This hydrogel restores mural shape and color, enabling non-destructive cleaning. As a significant heritage of human civilization, murals often develop hydrophobic smoke deposits on their surfaces due to the combustion of incense, candles, and Yak butter, posing a serious threat to their long-term preservation. Traditional cleaning methods fail to meet the stringent requirements of cultural relic conservation, particularly with regard to safety, controllability, and non-destructiveness, thereby highlighting the urgent need for a gentle, safe, and controllable cleaning strategy. To address this challenge, this study developed a polyvinyl alcohol-polyacrylic acid (PVA-PAA) double-network hydrogel loaded with an oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsion (composed of AEO-9, SDBS, n-pentanol, liquid paraffin, and water) via a solvent displacement method. The hydrogel forms a three-dimensional network through the synergistic interaction between PVA and PAA, achieving stable cross-linking primarily through hydrogen bonding. The influence of varying PVA:PAA mass ratios on hydrogel performance was systematically investigated. Results demonstrated that the hydrogel with a mass ratio of 7:3 exhibited optimal mechanical properties(the tensile stress is 0.66 MPa and the strain is 700%.), swelling capacity(110%), and liquid retention(the water retention rate is 67% after working at 60 degrees celsius for 4 h.). The cleaning evaluation demonstrates that following treatment with the system, the surface morphology, color difference, and contact angle of the simulated mural samples with smoke deposits mural closely resemble those of the original sample. This indicates that the system can gently penetrate the contamination layer, effectively promote the emulsification and dispersion of pollutants, and preserve the structural integrity of the underlying mural substrate. This research presents a novel, controllable, and non–destructive cleaning strategy for the removal of complex hydrophobic contaminants from cultural relic surfaces, offering strong potential for practical application.

The poor thermal stability of commercial polyethylene (PE) separators hinders the further application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), yet previous modifications struggle to balance between safety and electrochemical performance. This study proposes an interface modification strategy by forming a poly(melamine terephthalamide) (PTM) coating on the PE separator surface, constructing a “thermal–mechanical–electrochemical synergistic barrier”. The PTMs@PE separator achieves synergistic improvements in thermal shutdown behavior, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and electrochemical compatibility by taking advantage of the temperature-sensitive response of the PE separator, the flame-retardants of the rigid conjugated skeleton with the high nitrogen of PTM, and the electrolyte-affinity of its functional groups. Importantly, the principles between the molecular structure of the PTM coating and the thermal behavior is verified. The results demonstrate that PTM participates in the decomposition process of the PE separator and slows down the degradation rate of the PE chain structure, thereby resulting in a wide-temperature-range thermal shutdown temperature. The PTMs@PE effectively reduces the risk of runaway. The PTMs@PE separator achieves outstanding electrochemical compatibility, achieving a capacity retention rate of 99.27% at 2 C for 500 cycles. Notably, the separator shows high potential for scalable fabrication. This work provides a novel material system and technical pathway for developing highly safe and high-performance LIB separators.

The practical application of semisolid lithium metal batteries is impeded by inadequate ionic conductivity, suboptimal oxidation/reduction stability, and safety concerns of the electrolyte. Herein, a versatile molecular engineering strategy is proposed to construct a robust polymer framework for semisolid electrolytes, which creates highly compatible cross-linked networks by the in situ gelation of concentrated succinonitrile-based plastic crystal electrolytes and multifunctional nitrogen- and fluorine-rich monomers. This strategy allows the electrolyte to promote rapid Li-ion transpsort through weak coordination with the polymer segments. Meanwhile, the strong interactions between the polymer matrix and succinonitrile enhance their mutual solubility, reduce the crystallinity of succinonitrile, and establish fast ion-conductive pathways. The resultant electrolyte induces the formation of LiF/Li3N-rich solid electrolyte interphases and achieves uniform lithium deposition behaviors. Moreover, it mitigates fire risks by cothermally decomposing to produce fire-extinguishing gases (CO2 and NH3) and leveraging the nonflammability of succinonitrile. Significant improvements in electrochemical performance have been observed in Li symmetric, Li||LiFePO4, and Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells both at room temperature and high temperature (60 °C). As a demonstration model, this molecular engineering strategy has been successfully applied to enhance thermal stability and safety in Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 pouch cells, offering a promising solution for semisolid lithium metal batteries under extreme conditions.

The advancement of stimulus-responsive pesticide delivery systems offers a pivotal strategy for reconciling agricultural productivity with ecological sustainability. This study engineers a cellulose-functionalized vaterite calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanoplatform (Pro@CaCO3@HPC, PCH) endowed with pH/cellulase dual-responsive intelligence for targeted prochloraz delivery. The hierarchically porous vaterite architecture facilitates superior drug loading (12.4%, w/w), while demonstrating environmentally triggered release kinetics. Controlled liberation studies reveal 2.37-fold and 2.13-fold cumulative release enhancements under acidic conditions and cellulase exposure, respectively, compared to neutral environments—a response mechanism strategically aligned with the pathophysiological microenvironment of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum infection. The multifunctional nanoformulation exhibits threefold advantages: (1) enhanced antifungal performance, achieving 96.1% mycelial inhibition at 1 µg mL−1 compared to conventional formulations (72.7%); (2) reduced environmental footprint through 27.7% decreased soil mobility relative to free prochloraz; (3) improved biosafety profiles, maintaining crop germination rates 13.3% higher than commercial formulations while demonstrating attenuated cytotoxicity. This phytopathology-activated delivery system establishes a technological paradigm that synchronizes three critical agricultural requirements: pathogen-responsive precision, environmental persistence mitigation, and non-target organism protection. Therefore, this study provides an environmentally friendly, intelligent and efficient strategy, which shows great potential in the field of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum control.

With the development of flexible wearable electronic devices, energy storage equipment like supercapacitor with high energy density, good mechanical properties and safety has attracted more and more attention. However, the currently existing energy storage materials normally suffer from several drawbacks, such as poor flexibility, hidden danger, toxicity and especially low energy density, limiting their practical applications. Expanding the voltage window by employing the hydrogel electrolyte is regarded as an effective method to improve the energy density of supercapacitor. Herein, we employ a zwitterionic natural polymer hydrogel with excellent mechanical strength and flexibility as electrolyte to assemble a solid-state zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor (H-ZHS) with Zn foil and activated carbon electrode. The H-ZHS exhibits an amazingly wide and stable voltage window of 2.4 V, high maximum energy density of 286.6 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 220 W kg −1 and superior capacity retention of 95.4% after 2000 cycles at 2 A g −1 calculated based on mass of activated carbon electrode. The strategy in this work should provide a new insight in exploring zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor with high energy density for flexible wearable electronic devices.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a key solvent for Octogen (HMX) recrystallization, faces challenges in safe recovery and cyclic use due to thermal instability. This study has developed a Wiped Film Evaporator/Distillation coupled (WFE) technology to achieve efficient DMSO recovery from HMX-contaminated solutions. Compared to the conventional vacuum distillation, this technique could significantly increase the effective recycle time of DMSO. Optimal parameters (115°C jacket temperature, 0.005 MPa operational pressure, 6 mL/min feeding speed) were determined via Response Surface Methodology (RSM), yielding > 95.5 wt% DMSO purity with < 0.03 wt% decomposition. The method enabled at least 21 reuse cycles without compromising HMX recrystallization quality ( β -crystal structure confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), defect-free morphology via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)). The safety of the recovery process can be achieved through lower jacket temperatures. Thermal analysis (Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC)/ Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)) validated that no significant decomposition of DMSO and HMX was present at the jacket temperature of 115°C. This improvement is attributed to the lower pressure drop and higher heat transfer efficiency of the wiped film evaporator relative to conventional reboiler. This work provides a sustainable strategy for solvent recycling in energetic material industries, balancing efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
