Localized Electron Redistribution in Methanol Molecules over the Sea Urchin-like Tricobalt Tetroxide/Copper Oxide Nanostructures for Fast Hydrogen Release

Jinyun Liao,Yuanzhong Li,Yufa Feng,Junhao Li,Youxiang Shao,Xiaodong Chen,Quanbing Liu,Hao Li

Catalytic methanolysis of ammonia borane (NH3BH3) is a prospective technology in the field of hydrogen energy in which hydrogen production and hydrogen storage can be integrated together. The splitting of the O–H bond is identified as the rate-determining step (RDS) in this reaction. Thus, a deep understanding of the relationship between the electronic structure of the catalyst, especially the localized electron density of active sites, and the breaking behaviors of the O–H bond is of extreme importance for the rational design of robust catalysts for the reaction. In this work, sea urchin-like tricobalt tetroxide/copper oxide (Co3O4/CuO) nanostructures with rich oxygen vacancies (Ov) were fabricated by a simple synthetic route. In NH3BH3 methanolysis, the optimal Co3O4/CuO sample exhibited ultrahigh catalytic activity with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 87.5 min–1. Interestingly, when NH3BH3 methanolysis was carried out under visible-light illumination, the TOF further increased to 116.4 min–1, which is the highest TOF value among those of the noble-metal-free catalysts ever documented in the literature. Theoretical calculation results evidenced that the Cu site in the Co3O4/CuO sample was in charge of the adsorption and activation of methanol molecules. Both the Ov and visible-light illumination can help electrons on the Cu site flow to the adsorbed methanol molecule, thus leading to localized electron redistribution of the methanol molecule and the extension of the O–H bond. The cooperation of Ov and visible light makes splitting of the O–H bond easier, which is favorable for fast hydrogen release from NH3BH3 methanolysis. This study helps us to gain an insight into the influence of localized electron redistribution of methanol molecules on the RDS, which conduces to the rational design of highly effective nanocatalysts. Moreover, the coinduction strategy for localized electron redistribution with oxygen vacancy engineering and visible-light illumination opens up a route to boost catalytic activity in NH3BH3 methanolysis.

Innovative Catalyst Design of Sea-Urchin-like NiCoP Nanoneedle Arrays Supported on N-Doped Carbon Nanospheres for Enhanced HER Performance

Xupeng Zhang,Jiabo Wang,Yiyang Bi,Ying Wang,Qun Liu,Yu Zhang,Li Chen

Hydrogen (H2) stands as a clean energy alternative to fossil fuels, especially within the domain of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), offering prospective solutions to mitigate both environmental and energy-related challenges. In this work, we successfully synthesized a sea-urchin-like catalyst, specifically a nickel–cobalt phosphide nanoneedle array on N-doped carbon nanospheres (Ni0.5Co1.5P@NCSs), for efficient HER by a sequential hydrothermal and low-temperature phosphating process. The catalyst exhibits sea-urchin-like structures, offering a specific surface area of 298 m2 g–1 and consequently furnishing a greater abundance of active sites. Comparing with non-sea-urchin-like Ni0.5Co1.5P@CN catalysts, the Ni0.5Co1.5P@NCSs exhibit an overpotential of 163 mV at 10 mA cm–2, a Tafel slope of 60 mV dec–1, and a maintained current density of approximately 90% during 50 h of continuous electrolysis. Experiments demonstrate that the outstanding electrochemical properties of the Ni0.5Co1.5P@NCSs originate from nitrogen doping of carbon spheres, the distinctive morphology of sea-urchin-like nanoneedle arrays, and simultaneous enhancements in intermediate adsorption energy, charge transfer, and electrolyte diffusion channel shortening. This work emphasizes a preparation strategy for synthesizing an attractive electrocatalyst with a low cost and efficient HER performance.

Sustainable deep eutectic solvents preparation and their efficiency in extraction and enrichment of main bioactive flavonoids from sea buckthorn leaves

Qi Cui,Ju-Zhao Liu,Li-Tao Wang,Yu-Fei Kang,Yao Meng,Jiao Jiao,Yu-Jie Fu

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have naturally emerged as an alternative for traditional organic solvents for their efficiency on extracting natural products from plant materials. In the present study, 12 kinds of DESs (choline chloride as the hydrogen bond acceptor) were firstly prepared and applied to extract five main flavonoids (namely rutin, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin) from sea buckthorn leaves (SBL) combined with microwave-assisted extraction. The results showed that the extraction efficiencies of target flavonoids by DES were significantly superior to 70% ethanol. Aiming at obtaining the optimal procedure, the extraction conditions were statistically investigated. Under the optimal conditions in pilot-scale application, the total maximum extraction yields of five main flavonoids reached to 20.820 mg/g, which was 1.321–2.400 folds to those by the traditional extraction methods. Meanwhile, the following enrichment of targets compounds from DES extraction solution exhibited excellent recoveries in the range of 72.36–84.99% were achieved by macroporous resin AB-8. In addition, the enriched flavonoids by AB-8 resin exhibited better antioxidant activities as compared with those unenriched. The results indicated that the potential of the developed method as a promising safe and sustainable alternative for selectively extraction and separation of bioactive substances from plant materials.

Collaborative electrospinning and ice-templating for sea urchin-inspired aerogel microsphere: Unraveling functional mechanisms in thermally conductive phase change composites

Jingjing Zhang,Jialin Zhang,Daoqing Liu,Jianhui Zeng,Zhenqiang Ye,Meng Han,Shuye Zhang,Yimin Yao,Rong Sun

With the increased integration of electronic devices, effective heat management becomes imperative. Thermally conductive phase change composites play a vital role by efficiently conducting heat and utilizing matrix phase change for heat storage. Conventional materials encounter difficulties such as low thermal conductivity, restricted heat storage density, and vulnerability to leakage. This study presents a novel method combining electrospinning and ice-templating method to produce aerogel microspheres with sea urchin-like structures, resolving mentioned issues. The microspheres exhibit a radial microstructure and controllable size, serving as efficient fillers for the easy production of high-performance phase change materials. The microspheres are able to create an efficient interlocking mechanism with surface spike structures, forming a continuous thermal conduction and spatially confined network in the composite material. At a filler content of 43.9 vol%, the thermal conductivity of the Al aerogel microsphere/paraffin composite reaches a peak value of 3.2 W/mK, accompanied by a contact thermal resistance of 1.2 × 10 −6  Km 2 /W. Subjecting the composite to elevated temperatures well above the matrix's phase change temperature preserves its structural stability. This work reports a new structured filler moulding method that supports the development of high performance thermally conductive phase change composites.

Bacteria imprinted electrochemical sensor based on bimetallic silver-gold sea urchin-like hollow nanoparticles for ultrasensitive detection of Listeria monocytogenes

Yating Li,Miao Zhang,Xingbo Shi,Zhihui Wu

Food safety problems caused by foodborne pathogens pose a serious threat to human health and its sensitive detection is an urgent issue. Herein, a polydopamine film-based electrochemical biosensor was constructed for ultrasensitive detection of Listeria monocytogenes ( L. monocytogenes ). Bimetallic silver-gold sea urchin-like hollow nanoparticles (BUHNPs) were first synthesized and loaded on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode, and then aptamers (apt) were modified on the BUHNPs , followed by depositing of dopamine to form polydopamine of bacterial imprinted polymers (PDA BIPs) film, and finally three-dimensional molecularly imprinted films with cavities were achieved after template elution. The presence of L. monocytogenes resulted in a change in the current signal, indicating that the bacteria had entered the cavity. The biosensor was able to detect L.monocytogenes at 10 1 -10 6 CFU·mL −1 with a detection limit of 1.0 CFU·mL −1 . The sensor can achieve rapid detection within 7 min, and the synergistic effect of BIP and aptamer enhances the recognition of the target, showing a great potential for the detection of L. monocytogenes in real food samples.

The Phylogeny and Metabolic Potentials of a Lignocellulosic Material-Degrading Aliiglaciecola Bacterium Isolated from Intertidal Seawater in East China Sea

Hongcai Zhang,Zekai Wang,Xi Yu,Junwei Cao,Tianqiang Bao,Jie Liu,Chengwen Sun,Jiahua Wang,Jiasong Fang

Lignocellulosic materials are composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin and are one of the most abundant biopolymers in marine environments. The extent of the involvement of marine microorganisms in lignin degradation and their contribution to the oceanic carbon cycle remains elusive. In this study, a novel lignin-degrading bacterial strain, LCG003, was isolated from intertidal seawater in Lu Chao Harbor, East China Sea. Phylogenetically, strain LCG003 was affiliated with the genusAliiglaciecolawithin the familyAlteromonadaceae. Metabolically, strain LCG003 contains various extracellular (signal-fused) glycoside hydrolase genes and carbohydrate transporter genes and can grow with various carbohydrates as the sole carbon source, including glucose, fructose, sucrose, rhamnose, maltose, stachyose and cellulose. Moreover, strain LCG003 contains many genes of amino acid and oligopeptide transporters and extracellular peptidases and can grow with peptone as the sole carbon and nitrogen source, indicating a proteolytic lifestyle. Notably, strain LCG003 contains a gene of dyp-type peroxidase and strain-specific genes involved in the degradation of 4-hydroxy-benzoate and vanillate. We further confirmed that it can decolorize aniline blue and grow with lignin as the sole carbon source. Our results indicate that theAliiglaciecolaspecies can depolymerize and mineralize lignocellulosic materials and potentially play an important role in the marine carbon cycle.

The Sea-Island Structured EPDM/PP TPV With Shape Memory Performance In Situ Compatibilized by Magnesium Maleic and Maleic Anhydride

Mengmeng Xu,Chengzhong Zong

It is challengeable to obtain shape memory effect in the traditional thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) with sea-island microstructure. Herein, we successfully achieved shape memory behavior in the type of ethylene propylene diene monomer/polypropylene thermoplastic vulcanizate (EPDM/PP TPV) compatibilized by the graft products of magnesium maleic (MgMA) and maleic anhydride (MAH) on the interface of EPDM/PP. MgMA and MAH derived from the in situ neutralization reaction of maleic acid (MA) with magnesium oxide (MgO) and the dehydration reaction of MA respectively. In this paper, the mole ratio of MA and MgO on the performance of EPDM/PP TPV was studied. With the incorporation of MA and MgO, the mechanical property and shape memory performance were improved. The result of DMA, FTIR, and SEM verified the successful graft reaction of MgMA and MAH on the polymer chains. The compatibilized EPDM/PP TPV achieved the improved mechanical property of tensile strength (12.9 MPa) and elongation at break (583.5%), the increased R f of 96.2% and R r of 86.7% at the tailoring mole ratio of MA:MgO (1:1.5).

Purification and Structural Analyses of Sulfated Polysaccharides from Low-Value Sea Cucumber Stichopus naso and Anticoagulant Activities of Its Oligosaccharides

Lige Cui,Huifang Sun,Xiaolei Shang,Jing Wen,Pengfei Li,Shengtao Yang,Linxia Chen,Xiangyang Huang,Haoyang Li,Ronghua Yin,Jinhua Zhao

Three polysaccharides (SnNG, SnFS and SnFG) were purified from the body wall ofStichopus naso. The physicochemical properties, including monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, sulfate content, and optical rotation, were analyzed, confirming that SnFS and SnFG are sulfated polysaccharides commonly found in sea cucumbers. The highly regular structure {3)-L-Fuc2S-(α1,}nof SnFS was determined via a detailed NMR analysis of its oxidative degradation product. By employing β-elimination depolymerization of SnFG, tri-, penta-, octa-, hendeca-, tetradeca-, and heptadeca-saccharides were obtained from the low-molecular-weight product. Their well-defined structures confirmed that SnFG possessed the backbone of {D-GalNAc4S6S-β(1,4)-D-GlcA}, and each GlcA residue was branched with Fuc2S4S. SnFS and SnFG are both structurally the simplest version of natural fucan sulfate and fucosylated glycosaminoglycan, facilitating the application of low-value sea cucumbersS. naso. Bioactivity assays showed that SnFG and its derived oligosaccharides exhibited potent anticoagulation and intrinsic factor Xase (iXase) inhibition. Moreover, a comparative analysis with the series of oligosaccharides solely branched with Fuc3S4Sshowed that in oligosaccharides with lower degrees of polymerization, such as octasaccharides, Fuc2S4Sled to a greater increase in APTT prolongation and iXase inhibition. As the degree of polymerization increases, the influence from the sulfation pattern diminishes, until it is overshadowed by the effects of molecular weight.

Occurrence and ecological risks of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in three National Aquatic Germplasm Resources Reserves in the South China Sea

Chong Chen,Huadong Yi,Shaopeng Xu,Yutong Zhang,Qihui Zhao,Ruolan Jia,Chengcheng Bu,Xian Qin,Sheng Bi,Limin Ma,Guifeng Li,Kenneth Mei Yee Leung,Yuefei Ruan

National Aquatic Germplasm Resources Reserves (NAGRRs) are pivotal protected areas in delivering ecological and socio-economic advantages. This study focuses on three NAGRRs in the South China Sea, meticulously examining the pollution levels of 31 common endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) within these protected areas and their surrounding coastal areas. The highest cumulative concentrations in the dissolved phase, suspended particulate matter (SPM) phase, and surface sediment were recorded at 280.59 ng/L in the dry season, 192.89 ng/L in the wet season, and 411.89 ng/g dry weight in the dry season, respectively. The log K D − SED (2.17−5.49 in the wet season and 2.51−5.50 in the dry season) were relatively lower than log K D − SPM (3.21−6.09 during the wet season and 3.79−5.75 during the dry season), suggesting a higher likelihood of EDC distribution to the SPM than surface sediment. The sum of five estradiol equivalent concentrations in the waters of the coastal and protected areas significantly surpassed the threshold for endocrine-disrupting activity, suggesting that the targeted estrogens in these regions may potentially disrupt the endocrine systems of aquatic organisms. Norgestrel, 17 α -ethinylestradiol, 4- tert -octylphenol, bisphenol A, bisphenol B, and bisphenol F were pinpointed as pollutants necessitating urgent concern due to their ecological risks and detection frequencies. These research findings provided valuable insights into the effective management and remediation of emerging pollutants within NAGRRs, thereby contributing to strengthening their protection and biodiversity conservation.

Ammonium alginate and cellulose nanofiber-based sea anemone tentacle-inspired colorimetric gas-sensitive aerogel enabling ultra-sensitive ammonia visual detection

Yanghang Liu,Lizhi Wang,Zirun Zhan,Yu Jiang,Xun Zhang,Yunhe Li,Xin Zhong,Dan Yu,Wei Wang

Real-time visual detection of ammonia (NH₃) is crucial for environmental safety and food quality, yet traditional sensors often suffer from slow response, poor selectivity, and limited adaptability. Here, we innovatively report an ammonium alginate (AL) and cellulose nanofiber-based colorimetric aerogel (APPC aerogel) with a sea anemone-inspired structure for rapid, sensitive, and reversible NH₃ detection. The aerogel is prepared by embedding a sulfonated indole photoacid (PMU H) into a matrix of AL, cellulose nanofibers (CNF), and phytic acid (PA), cast into a 3D-printed template, and directionally frozen to form an ordered porous bionic structure. Upon NH₃ exposure, PMU-H undergoes fast, reversible proton transfer and enol-keto tautomerization, producing a color change from yellow to purplish-red within 5 s. The aerogel shows a detection limit of 0.65 ppm, a linear range of 1–250 ppm, and maintains performance over 50 cycles. FTIR and DFT analyses reveal the sensing mechanism. The material remains stable under humidity, temperature variations, and complex gases, enabling effective visual monitoring of NH₃ during seafood spoilage and offering promise for food packaging, environmental monitoring, and safety applications.

Integration of untargeted lipidomics and targeted metabolomics revealed the mechanism of flavor formation in lightly cured sea bass driven via salt

Zi-Chun Zhang,Ji Wang,Meng Dong,Shuang Cui,Xu-Hui Huang,Lei Qin

Salt enhances flavor and salinity in Chinese curing; however, excessive use can pose health risks, while reducing NaCl may harm taste. This study utilized targeted and untargeted metabolomics to investigate the intrinsic molecular mechanisms that drive flavor formation in cured sea bass subjected to salt. Glycine, succinic acid, lactic acid and uridine significantly contributed to the taste profile of the cured sea bass. A total of 668 lipid molecules were annotated in the samples, of which 60 were classified as differential lipids. Non-targeted lipidomic analysis identified phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine as the major flavor precursors, constituting 40.12 % of the total. Elevated salt concentrations significantly enhanced the production and accumulation of key differential volatile flavor components, including 1-octen-3-ol, 2-undecanone and 2-pentylfuran. Thus, salt facilitated the degradation and oxidation of lipids, leading to the formation of key flavor compounds that contribute to the enhancement of the flavor profile of cured sea bass.

Synergistic effect of kojic acid and tea polyphenols on bacterial inhibition and quality maintenance of refrigerated sea bass (Lateolabrax japonicus) fillets

Ruifei Wang,Xinyi Hu,Addo Keren Agyekumwaa,Xiaofeng Li,Xinglong Xiao,Yigang Yu

Fresh fish are highly perishable because their high content of protein and unsaturated fatty acids are easily oxidized and/or degraded under the influence of bacteria and the external environment. In this study, four natural preservatives (phenyllactic acid, kojic acid , tea polyphenols and thymol) were initially screened for antimicrobial activity against spoilage bacteria commonly found in fish by in vitro antibacterial tests. The results suggested that kojic acid (KA) and tea polyphenols (TP) exhibited a strong synergistic antibacterial effect against spoilage bacteria. Hence, the effects of KA and/or TP on the preservation of refrigerated sea bass ( Lateolabrax japonicus ) fillets after soaking treatments were determined. Changes in physicochemical parameters, indexes of fish freshness and microbial enumeration were examined. KA, TP and KA-TP treatments were effective in inhibiting bacterial growth and delaying lipid oxidation in fish flesh, resulting in lower TVB-N and TBARS than the control. Meanwhile, the freshness and physical qualities (color and texture) of fish fillets were also stabilized by the three treatments. Moreover, the KA-TP treatment showed the best effect on refrigerated fish preservation among the three treatments and extended the shelf-life by 5–6 days, suggesting that KA-TP have the potential to become a compound preservative for aquatic products.
