Chemotherapeutic treatments are indispensable in the treatment of breast cancer. However, the emergence of multidrug-resistance, strong cell toxicity, and poor targeting selection has inhibited their clinical application. In this study, two synergistic drugs, doxorubicin (DOX) and curcumin (CUR), were co-administered to overcome multidrug resistance (MDR). Based on the characteristics of the tumor microenvironment, we developed folic acid-modified nanoparticles ((DOX + CUR)-FA-NPs) based on a star-shaped polyester (FA-TRI-CL) to enhance the tumor targeting selectivity and drug loading (DL) capacity. The (DOX + CUR)-FA-NPs displayed a characteristic spheroid morphology with an ideal diameter (186.52 nm), polydispersity index (0.024), zeta potential (–18.87 mV), and good entrapment efficiency (97.64%/78.13%, DOX/CUR) and DL (20.27%/11.29%, DOX/CUR) values. In vitro pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic experiments demonstrated that the (DOX + CUR)-FA-NPs were gradually released, and they displayed the highest cell apoptosis and cellular uptake in MCF-7/ADR cells. Additionally, in vivo results illustrated that (DOX + CUR)-FA-NPs not only displayed significant tumor targeting and anticancer efficacy, but also induced less pathological damage to the normal tissue. In summary, co-administered DOX and CUR appeared to reverse MDR, and this targeted combinational nanoscale delivery system could thus be a promising carrier for tumor therapies in the future.

As a typical aerospace advanced resin-based material, the high brittleness and poor fire safety performance of bismaleimide resin (BMI) has been the key factor restricting its further development. Therefore, two star-shaped allyl functionalized phosphazene small molecules (HMACP, HECP) were designed and synthesized utilizing the nucleophilic substitution reaction between hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and allyl alcohol/eugenol for enhancing the flame retardant and toughness of BMI . It’s observed with the inclusion of HMACP and HECP, the heat and smoke release behavior of BMI/HMACP and BMI/HECP are effectively suppressed. The fire risk of BMI samples are evaluated by fire growth index (FGI) and fire performance index (FPI) calculated by cone calorimeter results. And with the addition of 5 wt% HMACP and HECP, the FGI of BMI/HMACP-5 and BMI/HECP-5 possess the lowest values of 1.51 and 1.04 kW/(m 2 s), respectively. Besides, the FPI of BMI/HMACP-5 and BMI/HECP-5 are highest and the values are 0.36 and 0.37 (m 2 s)/kW, respectively, which indicates that the fire safety performance of BMI/HMACP-5 and BMI/HECP-5 are significant improved. Meanwhile the impact strength of BMI/HMACP-5 and BMI/HECP-5 are increased by 117% and 195%, respectively, which means the toughness of BMI resin with the modification of HMACP and HECP is improved. The flame retardant mechanisms of BMI/HMACP and BMI/HECP are investigated systematically. Comparative analysis of the similarities and differences between BMI/HMACP and BMI/HECP are also conducted. Therefore, it can be drawn that the designed HMACP or HECP can effectively improve the toughness and fire safety performance of BMI.

Abstract A novel phosphoramidate salt fire retardant (FR) with high phosphorus–nitrogen (P–N) content, tris(2-aminoethyl)amine phosphoramidate salt (TAEAPA), was synthesized by a simple design philosophy. A three-arm star-like structure FR with a high level of P or N content was obtained. Phosphorus and nitrogen contents of TAEAPA increased up to 8.6 at% and 14.5 at%, respectively. Subsequently, TAEAPA was employed to finish lyocell fibers through the classical dip-dry-cure technique. Consequently, the thermal stability and fire retardancy of finished lyocell fibers were improved significantly, as evidenced by thermogravimetric and vertical flammability test. Finished lyocell fibers exhibited higher char residues (39.2 wt%) and lower degradation rate (0.6%/°C) under nitrogen atmosphere. Besides, lyocell fabrics finished by 300 g/L of TAEAPA finishing solution only had a char length of 53 mm when exposed to flame more than 60 s, and immediately extinguished after the removal of flame. Thermogravimetry-infrared and pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry coupled techniques confirmed that the high contents of P and N included in TAEAPA played a good synergistic effect on both condensed and gaseous phase during the thermal pyrolysis process of lyocell fibers. A four-armed anionic star-shaped block polymer, containing an anionic polymer poly(2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) as the core group and poly(2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDM) as the terminal group, was synthesized by using the Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) method. The (PAMPS50-PDM50)4 aqueous solution exhibited both polyelectrolyte and hydrophobic associative characteristics, that is, a low concentration of NaCl results in decreasing viscosity but a high concentration of NaCl results in increasing viscosity. The four-armed anionic block polymer shows a CO2-reversible property at high concentrations of brine. Viscosity, pH, and ζ potential demonstrate the switchability jointly; the values could be switched from relatively low to high cyclically. These transitions could actually be attributed to the protonation of tertiary amine groups in PDM blocks, and the mechanism was proved by 1H NMR.

Functional liquid crystal polymers have attracted much attention as new all-solid-state polymer electrolytes due to their ability of orientation. In this paper, a hyperbranched star liquid crystal polymer (HSLCP) electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is developed for the first time. This type of HSLCP bears a hyperbranched poly(glycidol) (HPG) as core, poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) and poly (4-cyano-biphenyl methylmethacrylate) ((LC) x ) compose the block arms of the HSLCP. (LC) x segments, one part of the arms, are assisted to promote transmission of Li-ion via orientation and PCL segments are used to dissociate lithium salt and efficiently migrate charge carriers. The good self-standing all-solid-state polymer electrolyte film composed of HSLCP and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide (LiTFSI) can be formed by solution casting method. It is demonstrated that such a HSLCP exhibits good thermal stability (368°C), the HSLCP-based electrolyte shows high ionic conductivity (5.98 × 10 −5 S cm −1 at 30°C), outstanding ion transference number (0.63), and wide electrochemical window (5.12 V). In addition, LiFePO 4 /Li batteries employing the electrolyte deliver good cycling performance and rate capability. Simultaneously, the corresponding half-cell can still power a LED lamp at room temperature . Thus, this is a great progress for liquid crystal-based polymer electrolytes to be applied to high energy LIBs.

Pentaerythritol (PER) was esterified with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide to synthesize a four-arm initiator 4Br-PER for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Star-shaped copolymers (P(AM- co -DMAEMA) 4 , CSP) were prepared via ATRP using dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and acrylamide (AM) as comonomers, while Br-PER and CuBr/2,2′-bipyridine (BPY) as the initiator and the catalyst, respectively. The resulting four-arm initiator and star-shaped polymer (CSP) were characterized with FT-IR, 1 H NMR and Ubbelohde viscometry. Alkaline clay (AC) was immobilized with CSPs to yield amino groups, and the cationic star polymer-immobilized alkaline clay (CSP-AC) was applied to remove Cr(VI) from the aqueous solution in batch experiments. Various influencing factors, including pH, contact time and immobilization amount of CSP on adsorption capacity of CSP-AC for Cr(VI) were also investigated. The results demonstrated that Cr(VI) adsorption was highly pH dependent. The optimized pH value was 4.0. The adsorption isotherms of the adsorbent fit the Langmuir model well, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 137.9 mg/g at 30 °C. The material should be a promising adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal, with the advantages of high adsorption capacity.

In this paper, a series of star-shaped poly(lactide-co-glycolide)s (sPLGA) with different block ratios were prepared by the ring-opening copolymerization of D,L-lactide (LA) and glycolide (GA) with multi-hydroxyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane core as an initiator and tin (II) 2-ethylhexanoate (Sn(Oct)2) as the catalyst. The products were characterized by NMR, FT-IR, GPC, XRD, DSC, TGA and viscosity measurements. The results show that the contents of PLA and PGA segments in sPLGA can be controlled by the feed ratios of the copolymerization. The glass transition temperature and crystallinity of sPLGA decrease and the crystalline sPLGA becomes amorphous with increasing the molar feed ratio between GA and LA from 10:90 to 50:50. The drug-loaded sPLGA microspheres were prepared by an emulsion solvent evaporation method. The morphology and the drug release property were investigated by SEM, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and ultraviolet spectrophotometry (UV). The results indicate that the sPLGA80 microsphere surface was smooth and the mean diameter was about 1.27μm. The sPLGA80 microspheres showed good drug loading and release properties.

Star polymers (CD-POEGMAs and CD-PNIPAMs), and pseudo-graft polymer (PADMA-(CD-POEGMAs) x ) formed from PADMA with adamantyl(Ad) pendants and CD-POEGMAs by host–guest inclusion complexation were prepared and characterized. This work compared the thermoresponsive and self-assembly mechanisms of the POEGMAs as branches to that of PNIPAMs branched cyclodextrin cored star polymers. In contrast to CD-PNIPAMs which behaved abrupt and intensive dehydration process near its LCST, CD-POEGMAs exhibited thermally induced aggregation process with consecutive conformation changes during the temperature increase process, and gradually self-assembled into cyclodextrin centered aggregates with hydrophobic methacrylate backbone and dehydrated POEGMAs side chains. Moreover, this work provided a supramolecular method controlling and adjusting the thermoresponsive properties of pseudo-graft PADMA-(CD-POEGMAs) x formed from CD-POEGMAs and PADMA via inclusion complexation, which underwent a reversible thermally induced transition from micelle to nano-aggregates. Pseudo-graft PADMA-(CD-POEGMAs) x behaved gradually conformation changes as temperature rising, and self-assembled into aggregates with hydrophobic methacrylate backbone, residual Ads, and dehydrated POEGMAs side chains.

Tailor-made star polymers comprised of cross-linked cores containing polymeric pseudo-crown ether cavities and linear poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) arms are designed via cation template-assisted cyclopolymerization. The pseudo-crown ether cavities in cross-linked cores can coordinate with alkali metal cations and offer more cation diffusion channels. Moreover, the functional linear PEO arms are beneficial to the conductivity of cations and increase the compatibility with the PEO matrix. By selecting monomers with different chain lengths and cation templates, the tailor-made star polymers can be employed as efficient conductors for lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and potassium-ion batteries. The lithium-ion conductivity of the solid-state polymer electrolytes obtained from a potassium cation template and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA750) monomer (K-SPE750-Li) is 2.82 × 10 -5 S cm -1 at 20 °C. Furthermore, the cell of Li|K-SPE750-Li|LiFePO 4 shows stable cycling performance and a good rate property.

Hyperbranched star copolymers are important soft materials that have been employed for aqueous self-assembly and bioapplication, but their one-pot one-batch synthesis strategy and relevant topology are rarely discussed. In this contribution, we produce hyperbranched star poly(vinyl ether ester)s (mPEG- hb -PVEEs) amphiphiles with multimodal molecular weight distribution via one-pot one-batch Am+Bn+C1 (m ≥ 2, n ≥ 3) step-growth polymerization. Based on the topological analysis of these hyperbranched star copolymers, a convenient expression of the number ratio of monomeric structural units (N A /N B ) is deduced to describe the cyclic defect of intramolecular cyclization only by using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The introduction of long-chain terminators and the change in the molar feed ratio of A 2 :B 3 :C 1 considerably affect the N A /N B so as to give rise to increased influence of number of macromolecules and decreased influence of intramolecular cyclization, which are then responsible for an aqueous self-assembly behavior of mPEG- hb -PVEEs amphiphiles. Overall, this study opens new possibilities for the precise description of intramolecular cyclization and controllable synthesis of hyperbranched star copolymers via one-pot Am+Bn+C1 step-growth polymerization.

Star-shaped polymeric ionic liquids (PIL-3 and PIL-4) based on poly(2-(dimethyl-ethyl-amino)ethyl methacrylate) bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (P(EtDMAEMA-TFSI)) with three-arm and four-arm architectures were prepared through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and ion exchange. Subsequently, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) comprising PIL host, N,N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)ammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (DEME-TFSI) ionic liquid (IL) plasticizer with the same anion unit and LiTFSI salt were obtained. Compared with the linear PIL possessing the same elements, the increase of branches for PIL decreases the crystallity and glass transition temperature (T g ) of the corresponding GPEs. Accordingly, the ionic conductivity , electrochemical window and ion transport number of three-arm and four-arm PILs based GPEs (PIL-GPE-3 and PIL-GPE-4) are obviously superior to the linear contrastive sample. Among lithium metal batteries assembled by linear, three-arm and four-arm PILs based GPEs, Li/PIL-GPE-4/LiFePO 4 presents the best performance. The specific discharge capacity attains 151 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C, the capacity retention ratio achieves 93.6% after 100 cycles at 60 °C, and the coulombic efficiency is around 99%. The outstanding compatibility between PIL-4 and IL and the resulted interfacial stability between PIL-GPE-4 and electrodes both contribute to the excellent performance.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid electrolytes are pivotal for enabling high-safety and high-energy-density all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) yet remain fundamentally constrained by the inherent trade-off between ionic conductivity and mechanical robustness. Herein, we report a supramolecularly expanded polymer electrolyte engineered via a star boron-cored poly(ethylene glycol) (BPEG) macromolecule. The BPEG architecture incorporates a Lewis acidic boron core that promotes salt dissociation through anion-trapping, along with three flexible PEG arms that are intrinsically ion-conductive and structurally homologous to the PEO matrix. Critically, these PEG arms mediate the formation of a dynamic multiscale hydrogen-bond network between the PEO chains. This unique architecture, which disrupts PEO crystallization to unlock segmental motion, operates on a sequential relaxation mechanism: labile weak hydrogen bonds dissociate preferentially to facilitate Li+ transport, while robust strong hydrogen bonds persist to maintain mechanical integrity. Such design yields a robust yet adaptive supramolecular network that concurrently establishes continuous ion-conduction pathways and enhances structural robustness. As a result, the SEPE demonstrates high ionic conductivity, improved mechanical strength, and stable interfacial compatibility with lithium metal, enabling highly stable Li plating/stripping and delivering excellent performances in high-loading practical ASSLMBs. This work introduces a feasible multiscale relaxation supramolecular strategy for high-performance polymer electrolytes.
