Recently, perovskite/Si devices have attracted enormous interest as an ideal technology for tandem cells, particularly due to the attributes from perovskite cell including low temperature processibility, tunable optical bandgap, and high open circuit voltage. Although solution process is considered to be cost effective and more widely adoptable for perovskite subcell, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no successful demonstration for the resulting high performance two-terminal perovskite/Si cells. In this manuscript, solution process is employed to fabricate the key components in the two-terminal perovskite/Si tandem solar cell, including tunneling junction and the perovskite absorber. The current density match between both cells is thoroughly studied by varing the perovskite bandgap from ≈1.55 to 1.69 eV. It was also revealed that the photovoltage modulation in the device is primarily associated to the band alignment over the perovskite and the tunneling materials. Therefore, a reverse scanned power conversion efficiency over 20% is demonstrated, the most efficient two-terminal perovskite/Si device based on solution processed perovskite subcells.

The development of high-performance silicon/silicon oxide (Si/SiO x ) anodes has attracted great attention in the field of next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, preparing effective Si/SiO x composite materials to address issues such as poor cycling stability, subpar initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), and subpar interface compatibility remains a challenge. This work proposes a simple strategy for preparing Fe/Fe 3 C particle modified thin-layer carbon-coated Si/SiO x composite materials using a mixture of resorcinol formaldehyde (RF) precursor pyrolysis and ultrasonic treatment (referred to as C@Si/SiO x -Fe/Fe 3 C, abbreviated as CSSO-Fe/Fe 3 C). These composite materials are used as anodes for LIBs. Exploiting the benefits of its structure and composition, the CSSO-Fe/Fe 3 C anode offers a high ICE value of 68.7% and maintains a capacity of 563.2 mAh g −1 even after 1200 cycles at a current density of 2.5 A g −1 . Comprehensive characterization and electrochemical studies have elucidated the interface compatibility and structural stability mechanisms induced by the small amount of Fe/Fe 3 C doping and carbon coating, which explain the high capacity and stable cycling performance. Furthermore, when paired with LiCoO 2 cathode, the assembled LiCoO 2 ||CSSO-Fe/Fe 3 C coin-type full battery has a capacity of 80.7 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 76.6% after 200 cycles at 1.0 C. This synthesis approach offers valuable insights for designing high-performance Si/SiO x electrode materials.

This study systematically investigates the influence of preparation temperature on microstructure and generation mechanism of Si–Y–B-Yb ceramics as anti-corrosion matrix. Main phases of Si–Y–B-Yb ceramics are Y/YbB 4 , YSi 2 , and Si, where Y/YbB 4 is derived from the reaction between YSi 2 and YbB 6 . With increase in preparation temperature, open porosity of Si–Y–B-Yb ceramics gradually decreases, reaching 0.24 % at 1350 °C, and internal phases transform from a dispersed distribution to clearly defined boundary state. Based on this, high-temperature water-oxygen corrosion behavior of Si–Y–B-Yb ceramics is characterized in 50 vol% H 2 O+50 vol% O 2 environment at 1250 °C for 100 h. In this corrosive environment, silicate phase appears on the surface of Si–Y–B-Yb ceramics. With prolonged corrosion time, silicate phase gradually forms more complete protective layer, hindering further corrosion by water-oxygen environment. These results demonstrate the feasibility of proposed Si–Y–B-Yb materials for corrosion protection.

To preserve the structural and interfacial integrity of diamond, diamond/SiC composites were fabricated by Si infiltration under gas flow guidance. The characteristics of these materials are significantly affected by the interfacial reaction between Si and diamond. The interface formation was studied extensively by locally analyzing the microstructure of the interfacial regions via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results demonstrated that the extent of reactive erosion of diamond by Si weakened as the gas velocity increased during the infiltration process. Nanocrystalline Si 5 C 3 and β-SiC grains with an orientation relationship were observed at the diamond/SiC interface. Furthermore, by employing gas flow guidance, the diamond/SiC composites exhibited a better specific stiffness, measuring up to 183.3 × 10 6 m 2 s −2 , which represents an exceptional 18 % improvement compared with the control group.

The removal efficiency of tetracycline (TC) by Fe-based amorphous (Fe am ) alloy was investigated through batch experiments, examining the effects of TC concentration, initial pH, and environmental temperature on its removal performance. The experimental results indicate that Fe am , owing to its amorphous structure and excellent catalytic properties, has a TC removal rate that is 2.75 times greater than that of zero-valent iron (ZVI) powder. Within the range of initial pH values from 4 to 7, the degradation efficiency for TC remains high, with nearly all removal rates reaching 99 % after 30 min of treatment. The results suggest that the removal process is primarily attributed to adsorption (by Fe 0 and its corrosion products) and reduction. The pH significantly influences the formation of iron corrosion products and the variations in TC species. The reactive adsorbed Fe 2+ plays a crucial role in the removal process. In addition to demonstrating effective removal capabilities for TC, Fe am also exhibits excellent removal performance for oxytetracycline (OTC) hydrochloride and chlorotetracycline (CTC) hydrochloride, underscoring its broad applicability among tetracycline antibiotics. In summary, this study provides a novel approach for the removal of tetracycline antibiotics from water.

Recently, silicon-based anode materials have garnered significant attention from researchers due to their high theoretical specific capacity. However, these materials are highly prone to volume expansion, which significantly hinders their further commercialization. Here, the skeleton of silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) is constructed from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in order to buffer their volume increase and enhance electrochemical performance. In this study, a solvent-thermal reaction is conducted using a mixture of NiFe-MIL and sodium hydroxide solution to deposit a carbon layer around the Si NPs, while simultaneously creating a highly conductive graphene network. Si materials supported by inward multi-channel carbon were synthesized through high-temperature pyrolysis. This unique double-layer carbon structure endows the material with remarkable electrochemical properties, including enhanced cycle stability and lithium storage capacity. The Si@C–NiFe-MIL@reduced graphene oxide (Si@C–NiFe-MIL@rGO) electrode materials exhibit a high specific capacity of 2092.8 mA h g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1. Furthermore, they demonstrate a stable reversible capacity of 851 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 1000 mA g−1. This research may provide a different strategy for producing high-energy, reasonably priced silicon anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Constructing p-Si based heterojunction photocathode is a promising means to convert solar energy into storable hydrogen fuel . The favorable energy band alignment between p-Si absorber and electron transport layer (ETL) is crucial to realize efficient photogenerated carrier separation and transport during photoelectrochemical water splitting . The trade-off between large Fermi level difference and optimized conduction band offset (CBO) in p-Si heterojunction is a major limiting factor for achieving high solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. Herein, we introduced a double CdS/In 2 S 3 ETLs on p-Si to optimize band alignment and facilitate the charge carrier transport at the interface. The p-Si/CdS/In 2 S 3 system presents a step-like energy band alignment and the appropriate CBO at p-Si/CdS (0.46 eV) and CdS/In 2 S 3 (0.25 eV) interface suppress the charge recombination and efficiently extract photogenerated electrons. The Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement shows a lower charge transfer resistance for the double ETLs compared with the single ETL counterparts. As a result, the p-Si/CdS/In 2 S 3 /Pt photoelectrode exhibits a positive onset potential of ∼0.5 V RHE and a high applied bias photo-to-current efficiency of 5.6 % under AM 1.5G illumination. The strategy of band alignment engineering provides an effective way to improve the device performance and can be extended to other emerging semiconductor thin film photocathodes.

Lu-Al-Si-O-N tapes with different thickness were used to join gas pressure sintered Si 3 N 4 ceramics. The microstructure of the joints and the influences of the joint thickness and joining temperature on the bonding strength of the as-joined Si 3 N 4 ceramics have been investigated. The highest bonding strength about ~ 300 MPa of the joined specimens was achieved by using 450 µm interlayer at 1450 °C. The existence of Si 3 N 4 nanowires was beneficial for the improvement of the bonding strength by interweaving the oxynitride glass matrix in the joint region.

The thermogravimetric techniques and differential thermal analysis have been employed in this work to analyze the macro-reactions mechanism of the silicon delay composition. Quantum chemical calculation has been performed to study the microscopic mechanism of the main reaction (Pb 3 O 4 + Si) at the density functional theory BPW91/6−311++G(d, p) level of theory with the SDD implicit solvent model. Our results have shown that in the silicon delay composition, the strongest reaction exothermic peak is originated from the reaction between Pb 3 O 4 cluster and Si. For the microscopic reaction process of Pb 3 O 4 and Si containing two reaction pathways, we found that they proceeded in this manner, Pb 3 O 4 + Si → SiO + 3PbO and SiO + Pb 3 O 4 → SiO 2 + 3PbO, with a total of four reaction channels. In addition, we have determined the reaction sites by making use of the charge distribution from natural bonding orbital analysis and the HOMO–LUMO gap of the reactants.

In this study, highly reactive silicon nanoparticles (h-Si) were successfully prepared by an improved magnesiothermic reduction process with ∼ 100 nm mesoporous silica nanoparticles as templates. The prepared h-Si have an average particle size of 18 nm, an active content of 85 %, and a specific surface area of 69.2 m 2 /g. Meanwhile, the preparation process is simple, green (avoiding the use of HF), and shows a great improvement in the inhibition of side reactions. The energetic characteristics of h-Si were compared with those of commercially available silicon nanoparticles (c-Si) by using ultrasonically mixed KClO 4 as the oxidizer. Thermal analysis indicates that h-Si/KClO 4 has an advanced reaction onset temperature, increased heat release, and lower reaction activation energy. In constant-volume combustion tests, h-Si/KClO 4 shows excellent ignition and combustion characteristics in the fuel-rich state. In addition, electrostatic discharge sensitivity tests indicate that the minimum ignition energy of stoichiometric h-Si/KClO 4 exceeds 100 mJ, which is much more insensitive than that of n-Al/KClO 4 (∼2 mJ). Overall, h-Si show enhanced reactivity and have attractive advantages in applications where suitable combustion properties and low electrostatic sensitivity are required.

Silicon (Si) exhibits significant potential as a high-capacity anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, its commercial viability is hindered by challenges such as volumetric expansion during charge and discharge cycles, inadequate electrical conductivity, and a limited cycle life. To address these issues, the combination of Si with transition metal oxides and carbon coatings has proven to be an effective strategy for enhancing cycling performance. This paper presents a straightforward and cost-effective one-pot method for synthesizing Si@AMOA (Silicon composite carbon-coated amorphous manganese oxides) composites. The pores between the cross-linked nanorods can provide a large volume expansion space, and the embedded nanorods have strong Si C bonding, which can buffer the volume change of the Si active material, while the use of phenolic resin to form an amorphous carbon layer encapsulated with Si-composite amorphous MnO 2 improves electrical conductivity and stability, and the Si@AMOA anode material is loose and porous, with a large specific surface area, which is conducive to the ionic and electronic transport. The absence of the MnO 2 lattice leads to the presence of oxygen vacancies thus enabling the electrode material to have a better wettability with the electrolyte, which reduces the polarisation and improves the material's electrical conductivity, thus enabling the lithium to be rapidly intercalated/decalcified through the thin wall, thus improving its cycling stability performance. The Si@AMOA anode demonstrates a specific discharge capacity of 972.6 mAh g −1 after more than 600 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , while exhibiting excellent electrochemical stability across varying current densities.

In this report, a novel phosphorus/silicon-containing reactive flame retardant, hexa(3-triglycidyloxysilylpropyl)triphosphazene (HGPP), was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra ( 1 H, 31 P, and 29 Si), respectively. To prepare cured epoxy, HGPP had been co-cured with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) via 4,4-diaminodiphenylsulfone as a curing agent. The mechanical, thermal, and flame retardant properties of the cured epoxy were evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and limiting oxygen index (LOI). According to these results, it could be found that incorporation of HGPP in the cured epoxy system showed good thermal stability, high LOI values, and high char yield at high temperature. As moderate loading of HGPP in the epoxy system, its storage modulus and glass transition temperature were higher than those of neat DGEBA. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
