Ionic organohydrogel with long-term environmental stability and multifunctionality based on PAM and sodium alginate

Fan Zhang,Shanshan Jiang,Dezhen Zhao,Yunhe Diao,Xuying Liu,Jinzhou Chen,Jie Liu,Huige Yang

Hydrogels possess several advantageous characteristics, including transparency, biocompatibility, and ionic conductivity, making them promising for applications in flexible electronics, drug delivery, ionic skin, and electrolytes. Nevertheless, creating a robust conductive and antifreezing hydrogel with enduring environmental stability remains a significant challenge. This study, based on the salt-out effect of alkali metal ion salts and binary solvent systems, employs a straightforward one-pot solvent exchange method to introduce dynamic and reversible non-covalent bonds (hydrophobic association and hydrogen bonds) into a polyacrylamide-sodium alginate (PAM-SA) dual-network hydrogel with excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. By adjusting the types of ions and cryoprotective agents (CPA), a series of ion-conductive organic hydrogels with anti-freezing properties were successfully prepared. The resulting PAM/SA-Gly-KCl 1M hydrogel exhibits commendable mechanical properties (with a tensile strain of up to 1465 %, a tensile strength of 166 kPa, and toughness of 1354 kJ m 3 ), high ionic conductivity (0.59 S/m), outstanding frost resistance (–100 °C), and sustained long-term stability (maintaining 70 % of its weight for over one month in an open environment). Therefore, sensors based on organic hydrogels exhibit exceptional characteristics, including high strength, superior transparency, and dependable operation in low-temperature conditions. Its remarkable sensing sensitivity and stability and antifreeze properties facilitate operation across an extensive temperature range and contribute to an extended operational lifespan. Overall, this sensor proves conducive to developing enduring flexible electronic products in challenging environments, thereby unveiling novel prospects for the realms of smart wearable technology and health monitoring.

In vitro colon fermentation behaviors of Ca2+ cross-linked guluronic acid block from sodium alginate

Dan Yuan,Wenqian Xiao,Ao Gao,Wei Lu,Zhiming Gao,Bing Hu,Yuehan Wu,Wenxin Jiang,Yanlei Li

The degradation of sodium alginate by human gut microbiota was found to be retarded via calcium cross-linking in our previous study. We hypothesized that the guluronic acid block (GB) on the alginate molecule might be the key structural region affecting alginate degradation by the gut microbiota when cross-linked with calcium. This study aims to prove this hypothesis by studying the structural features of the cross-linked GB on its in vitro fecal fermentation behaviors concerning the aspects of total carbohydrate contents, monosaccharide contents, short-chain fatty acids production, calcium state variations, and structural variations. Herein, GB isolated from sodium alginate was cross-linked under ranges of molar ratios of [Ca2+]/[–COOH] that further restricted the degradation by gut microbiota similar to the cross-linked alginates. First, total carbohydrate contents, short-chain fatty acids production, monosaccharides contents, and calcium state analyses confirmed that the degradation of GB by gut microbiota was restricted by calcium cross-linking. Furthermore, the tracking analysis of structural variations during in vitro fermentation revealed that the “granules” structure could further restrict degradation by the gut microbiota, leaving more cross-linked GB fragments surviving in comparison to the “networks” structure. In addition, Bacteroides xylanisolvens showed a significant positive correlation to the “cross-linking porosity (R = 0.825, p < 0.001), which supported our previous findings on fermentation behaviors of cross-linked alginate. Together, guluronic acid blocks are the key structural regions that retard the degradation of sodium alginate by the gut microbiota when cross-linked with calcium.

Injectable Modified Sodium Alginate Microspheres for Enhanced Operative Efficiency and Safety in Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection

Luzhan Huang,Yongchao Jiang,Pengcheng Zhang,Muhan Li,Bingrong Liu,Keyong Tang

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an effective method for resecting early-stage tumors in the digestive system. To achieve a low injection pressure of the injected fluid and continuous elevation of the mucosa following injection during the ESD technique, we introduced an innovative injectable sodium-alginate-based drug-loaded microsphere (Cipro-ThSA) for ESD surgery, which was generated through an emulsion reaction involving cysteine-modified sodium alginate (ThSA) and ciprofloxacin. Cipro-ThSA microspheres exhibited notable adhesiveness, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial properties, providing a certain level of postoperative wound protection. In vitro cell assays confirmed the decent biocompatibility of the material. Lastly, according to animal experiments involving submucosal elevation of porcine colons, Cipro-ThSA microspheres ensure surgically removable lift height while maintaining the mucosa for approximately 246% longer than saline, which could effectively reduce surgical risks while providing sufficient time for operation. Consequently, the Cipro-ThSA microsphere holds great promise as a novel submucosal injection material, in terms of enhancing the operational safety and effectiveness of ESD surgery.

Double gradient and active electrode synergistic enhancement of cellulose nanofiber/sodium alginate aerogel moisture generator

Zhiguo Wang,Sijie Wang,Han Zhong,Hanwen Wang,Boyi Zhang,Xiaoping Rao,Jianchun Jiang

Currently, moisture-electric generators (MEGs), which can convert the energy of ubiquitous moisture into electricity, have become a trend. In this work, biomass-based generator (CMEG) with double gradient structures was prepared by two-step directed freeze-drying and Ca 2+ induced crosslinking reaction using cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), sodium alginate (SA) and calcium chloride. The composite aerogel with Ca 2+ ion concentration gradient structure was constructed by using the CNF/SA bilayer aerogel with the gradient structure of oxygen functional group as the template. The introduction of Ca 2+ ions not only further stabilized the structure of the aerogel, but also endowed the asymmetric hygroscopic between the upper and lower layers of the aerogel, resulting in a built-in water gradient. In addition, the ion gradient difference inside the aerogel was significantly enhanced by introducing an active metal electrode. Based on the above design, the CMEG exhibited leading maximum power density (128.04 μW·cm −2 ), wide temperature range (273–353 K) and long duration (110 h ) by adjusting the operating environment. And in addition to easily lighting multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs), CMEGs could also satisfy the power supply needs of various devices through different series-parallel connection designs. More importantly, it was compatible for applications in respiratory sensing and pressure monitoring. This work provides a new strategy for the biomass-based moisture-electric generators.

Effect of graphene oxide on sodium alginate hydrogel as a carrier triggering release of ibuprofen

Xiuling Lin,Jiali Shi,Ge Meng,Yusong Pan,Zhenying Liu

The design and preparation of safe wound dressings with antibacterial and controlled drug release abilities is valuable in medicine. This research focuses on the fabrication of a hydrogel carrier with graphene oxide (GO)–triggered ibuprofen (IBU) release to control inflammation. The hydrogel was prepared by cross-linking the base polymer sodium alginate (SA) and functionalized GO. The morphology of the gel was observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and its structure was analyzed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared reflection (FTIR) spectroscopy. The effects of GO on swelling capacity, IBU release behavior and antibacterial activity were investigated by using the prepared GO/SA hydrogel as a drug carrier and IBU as a drug model. In vitro studies confirmed that the GO/SA hydrogel had good antimicrobial activity and excellent cytotoxicity. The analysis of cumulative IBU release rates revealed that the addition of GO could promote the release of IBU, and the change in GO content did not have a prominent effect on IBU release. At the same time, the rate of IBU release from the GO/SA hydrogel was affected by near-infrared light. Under a light source, the release rate of IBU increased, and the release amount of IBU showed a clear stepwise increase under light on–off conditions. These results suggest that the GO/SA hydrogel could be a potential antibacterial and anti-inflammatory wound dressing.

Micelles/sodium-alginate composite gel beads: A new matrix for oral drug delivery of indomethacin

Xiujuan Huang,Yan Xiao,Meidong Lang

Micelles/sodium-alginate composite gel beads (micelles/SA beads) were constructed from SA matrix and indomethacin (IND) loaded six-arm block copolymer poly( ɛ -caprolactone)- block -(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (S(PCL- b -PDMA) 6 ) micelles. The morphology, swelling property and drug loading level of the beads were investigated. The release behavior of IND from three matrices including micelles, SA beads and micelles/SA beads was evaluated at pH 1.2, 6.8 and 7.4, as well as in the simulated gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Significant differences in the release of IND from each matrix were observed in the acidic and near neutral pH fluids. The results suggested that IND could be protected by the micelles/SA beads from being released under acidic conditions in the stomach and would be mainly delivered to the small intestine and the colon. The release behavior was dependent on the initial concentrations of SA and calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) due to the different crosslinking densities. The results demonstrated that these micelles/SA beads could represent a promising oral drug delivery system for drugs with poor water solubility.

Amino oxidized sodium alginate-based humidity-resistant triboelectric nanogenerator for human motion and respiration monitoring

Xixi Wang,Na Li,Ailing Yang,Nianfeng Zhang,Wu Qiu,Dapeng Yang

The charge dissipation effect induced by the surrounding water not only severely reduces the output of the triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), but also impacts their stability and durability, significantly limiting their application. Therefore, developing humidity-resistant triboelectric nanogenerators (HRTENGs) is an urgent issue to improve the environmental adaptability of TENGs. Herein, a novel HRTENG was designed with amino-oxidized sodium alginate (OSAN) that achieves enhanced electrical output properties from 15% RH to 85% RH, accompanying excellent reversible property and outstanding water resistance ability. The enhancing dielectric property by introducing of aldehyde groups direct improves the output of the TENG, and the hydrophilicity improvement by modified with the amino side chains induces the formation of bound water, resulting in charge dissipation effect weakening and contact charging strengthening, further increasing the output of the HRTENG. At 50% RH, the electrical output of the HRTENG fabricated with OSAN 3 G 0.5 is nine times compared to the TENG made with SAG 0.5 . The HRTENGs were used to monitor motion and respiratory status and could also clearly identify sleep issues for patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. The HRTENG we constructed provides a reference for future wearable self-powered devices for motion management, respiratory monitoring, disease diagnosis, and rehabilitation treatment.

BMSCs-laden mechanically reinforced bioactive sodium alginate composite hydrogel microspheres for minimally invasive bone repair

Shengjie Jiang,Hua Jing,Yu Zhuang,Jinjie Cui,Zeyu Fu,Dejian Li,Cancan Zhao,Usman Liaqat,Kaili Lin

Minimally invasive, efficient, and satisfactory treatment for irregular and lacunar bone defects is still a challenge. Alginate hydrogels serve as promising stem cell (SC) delivery systems for bone regeneration but are limited by low cellular viability, poor osteogenic differentiation, and insufficient mechanical support. Herein, we developed a BMSCs-laden mechanically reinforced bioactive sodium alginate composite hydrogel microspheres (BCHMs) system via a microfluidic method that possesses 1) a uniform size and good injectability to meet clinical bone defects with complex shapes, 2) high cellular viability maintenance and further osteogenic induction capacity, and 3) improved mechanical properties. As the main matrix, the sodium alginate hydrogel maintains the high viability of encapsulated BMSCs and efficient substance exchange. Enhanced mechanical properties and osteogenic differentiation of the BCHMs in vitro were observed with xonotlite (Ca 6 Si 6 O 17 (OH) 2 , CSH) nanowires incorporated. Furthermore, BCHMs with 12.5 % CSH were injected into rat femoral bone defects, and satisfactory in situ regeneration outcomes were observed. Overall, it is believed that BCHMs expand the application of polysaccharide science and provide a promising injectable bone substitute for minimally invasive bone repair.

Nanocellulose and multi-walled carbon nanotubes reinforced polyacrylamide/sodium alginate conductive hydrogel as flexible sensor

Chao Feng,Lifan Cai,Guiyou Zhu,Lehui Chen,Xinxin Xie,Jianwei Guo

Conductive hydrogels have been widely applied in human–computer interaction, tactile sensing, and sustainable green energy harvesting. Herein, a double cross-linked network composite hydrogel (MWCNTs/CNWs/PAM/SA) by constructing dual enhancers acting together with PAM/SA was constructed. By systematically optimizing the compositions, the hydrogel displayed features advantages of good mechanical adaptability, high conductivity sensitivity (GF = 5.65, 53 ms), low hysteresis (<11 %), and shape memory of water molecules and temperature. The nanocellulose crystals (CNWs) were bent and entangled with the backbone of the polyacrylamide/ sodium alginate (PAM/SA) hydrogel network, which effectively transferred the external mechanical forces to the entire physical and chemical cross-linking domains. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were filled into the cross-linking network of the hydrogel to enhance the conductivity of the hydrogel effectively. Notably, hydrogels are designed as flexible tactile sensors that can accurately recognize and monitor electrical signals from different gesture movements and temperature changes. It was also assembled as a friction nanogenerator (TENG) that continuously generates a stable open circuit voltage (28 V) for self-powered small electronic devices. This research provides a new prospect for designing nanocellulose and MWCNTs reinforced conductive hydrogels via a facile method.

Preparation and Heavy Metal Adsorption Performance of 2-Aminopyridine-Modified Sodium Alginate/Polyacrylic Acid Hydrogel

Tingxiang Wu,Amatjan Sawut,Rena Simayi

This study utilized the Schiff base reaction as a chemical bonding method to successfully graft 2-aminopyridine onto oxidized sodium alginate, resulting in the formation of modified sodium alginate (OSM). Subsequently, the OSM/polyacrylic acid (OSM/PAA) hydrogel was synthesized via a thermally initiated free radical polymerization process and evaluated as an adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater. Comprehensive characterization of the prepared samples was performed using FT-IR, SEM, and TGA. The influence of temperature, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and heavy metal ion concentration on the adsorption capacity of the OSM/PAA adsorbent in simulated wastewater was thoroughly investigated. Additionally, a detailed analysis of the adsorption thermodynamics, kinetics, and mechanisms was conducted. Experimental results indicated that at 25 °C, pH 5.0, and an adsorbent dosage of 0.4 g/L, the maximum adsorption capacities of the OSM/PAA hydrogel for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II) were 367.64 mg/g, 398.4 mg/g, and 409.83 mg/g, respectively. These findings suggest that the adsorption of heavy metal ions by OSM/PAA is a spontaneous, heterogeneous chemical process with significant potential for practical applications in wastewater treatment.

Preparation of biocompatibility coating on magnesium alloy surface by sodium alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogel

Rufeng Jia,Yanyan He,Jia Liang,Lin Duan,Chi Ma,Taoyuan Lu,Wenbo Liu,Shikai Li,Haigang Wu,Huixia Cao,Tianxiao Li,Yingkun He

Magnesium alloy is an excellent material for biodegradable cerebrovascular stents. However, the rapid degradation rate of magnesium alloy will make stent unstable. To improve the biocompatibility of magnesium alloy, in this study, biodegradable sodium alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan (SA/CMCS) was used to coat onto hydrothermally treated the surface of magnesium alloy by a dipping coating method. The results show that the SA/CMCS coating facilitates the growth, proliferation, and migration of endothelial cells and promotes neovascularization. Moreover, the SA/CMCS coating suppresses macrophage activation while promoting their transformation into M2 type macrophages. Overall, the SA/CMCS coating demonstrates positive effects on the safety and biocompatibility of magnesium alloy after implantation, and provide a promising therapy for the treatment of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis in the future.

Preparation, characterization, and application of composite oleogels based on whey protein isolate and sodium alginate

Yang Li,Shijie Zheng,Yuanyuan Song,Qinbo Jiang,Hui Zhang

Oleogels with solid-like properties can serve as substitutes for fats, thereby avoiding the consumption of high levels of saturated fatty acids. In this study, we developed a protein-polysaccharide composite network oleogel using whey protein isolate (WPI) and sodium alginate (SA) through an emulsion-templated method. Analysis with Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the presence of hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces between WPI and SA, which bolstered the oleogel's structure. The enhanced oxidative stability and oil binding capacity of the WPI-SA composite oleogels were attributed to these interactions, as compared to the WPI single-network oleogel. Large-amplitude oscillatory shear testing demonstrated that the WPI-SA composite oleogels exhibited good plastic behavior and irreversible shear thinning, whereas the WPI single-network oleogel displayed more viscous behavior and shear-thinning characteristics. In applications, replacing pork fat entirely with the WPI-SA composite oleogel in Harbin red sausage resulted in a product with similar texture and sensory qualities to the original sausage. These results suggested that the WPI-SA composite oleogel could be a potential suitable fat substitute in the food industry, particularly for meat products.
